iStockPhoto.com / Re: Fraud going down at IS
« on: December 30, 2010, 08:42 »
When i checked the iS forums this morning there was a thread made by a contributor (whiteway) who also had 'fraudulent transactions'. He posted that when he googled his name  today he got A LOT more hits than usual, all leading to what google calls 'attack sites' (if i recall the post correct).
Wanted to see the replies but there's no sign of the thread anymore... Ho ho ho indeed.

Just read KK's response as i was out last night; it ticks me off, to put it VERY polite and understated...
I know, and am made very clear too, that we contributors are annoying, whining PoS's ...but we're not imbeciles.

Of course this is theft, its not because its nothing physical that was taken it makes it different, they have stolen the biggest versions of the most valuable collections on istock (and most likely dont have bonafide plans with it either) which is worth $1000's and $1000's of dollars to the contributor AND istock. Saying this isnt really theft beats me...
I console myself with the thought that while i keep bending for them, they've collected so much bad karma 2011 will be a disaster year for them...one fail after another, contributors and buyers banging the doors and windows while they desperately keep sticking fingers and toes in every crack of the bursting dam. While KK is watching from his luxury million penthouse of course...

In my perfect world there'd be a migration to DT ;D

I'm already there. :D
Are you a buyer are you a buyer?! If not you should stay where you were you competition you! ;D ;)  :P
Seriously tho, im seeing a big upswing in sales there since a month or so, but my portfolio is tiny and non-represental...add the wishful thinking factor and buyers are migrating in masses there!

Imho worse than the old pie-bootlicking are the 'Lobo's little helpers' who start to count down when someone posts something that's likely to be locked.
Eurghhh, annoys the sh*t out of me every time!

The search is broken and i think its more nefast than raising prices to scare customers away. (does anyone actually still believe they will implement the ability to filter out Vetta and agency? Im firmly convinced they DONT WANT TO and wont, otherwise it would have happened with this search update, c'mon, its not that difficult, the goodwill just isnt there.)
In my perfect world there'd be a migration to DT ;D

iStockPhoto.com / Re: iStockphoto to offer "Editorial Use" license
« on: December 16, 2010, 01:02 »
I've seen no indication that Getty stuff will be trucked in.

I agree there has been no indication so far, having said that I can imagine after the "success of agency" Getty trying to milk the last drops of blood out of their billion and trillions of photos on file.
I'm convinced this is whats behind this move though...opening the path to add another Getty Collection. They are already saying phase 2 will be a premium editorial collection (my bet is the majority of this premium collection will come from daddy G and select contributors can apply as well, same as agency now)...add the fact that editorial has to be submitted under the current upload restrictions keeping it somewhat restricted in size for now...
It's wild speculation, but i'd dare to put money on it... :)

With december projected earnings included i'll make roughly 30% in the last 4 months (i dont have much holiday stuff).
iStock doing very steady for me still...(unfortunately, sort of...)

I see that RM has posted, "If more people than we anticipate are going to miss the targets... then we'll adjust the targets. These bonus RCs aren't connected to that."
So ~ What on Earth is the point of the bonus RCs, then?
Making the select little favourite pet club happy of course!
You know, the ones that always dominate the best match, the istock lightboxes and *OTW's.

Hehe, both work!  ;D
It's insane what companies get away with when there's no union or contract with employees rights...

Any news yet FD?!

Holy...
Any news yet FD? This is just outrageous.
Just another proof of how rights-less (im sure theres a better word for it in english ;)) we are in this microstock industry. We just get toyed around, have no rights, and little-to-no ways to fight back; i hate having to explore other options but c'mon...
Hope this gets sorted out for you quick and decently mister!

Never mind, they're all really happy at their jobs. They all just love working at iStock (according to Roger Mexico and Yeppers by JJRD), which, as was said on the thread, must mean they who cause the problems aren't going to be penalised by getting pay cuts.

ROFL. Now it's that kind of attitude that got you kicked off their happy woo-yay forums.
Somehow that 'yeppers' from JJRD pisses me off the most. Before the whole F5-royalties fiasco it was this dude who claimed he'd put his 'behind' on the line for us and 'if there were decisions threatening the community he'd leave'. After the announcement we get nothing from him anymore, not a single word....only this 'yeppers' from the top of his ivory tower about how exciting and fun it is to work for istock.
Empty words, empty promises.

I just had one lousy sub sale on the magic day while I had a few large credit sales the days before. Even on Sunday I had more downloads.
Totally idem ditto!
A pity... but still very nice gesture either way.

Anyone, without even having to log in, can vote...popularity contest anyone?
(And of course there's the well expected bias towards exclusives and clubmembers.)

thanks miss jsnover :) that matches with my calculations (which i dont dare to rely on because i'm seriously maths impaired). Must be a unlucky coincidence to have this new low (its the same $ as for a small dl!) happening at the same time as one screwup keeps following up the other.

292
Talking about 'deals', yesterday i received $0,84 for a medium download, i checked and all my other mediums are for $1,50-1,80 with here and there an exception being around  $1,20-1,30 (im obv. non-exclusive).
Seriously, $0,84 for medium? My smalls pay around $0,60-0,90...
I just was wondering what you think... would it also be the result of such a 'deal', or is it a mistake and i'd be best to contact Contributor Relations?
Have to watch your stats like a hawk these days  :(

I believe we might live a huge drama soon. There is way to much things that happen behind the curtains... I can't wait

Seems like we are already living that huge drama.  But I agree with you Vonkara- there is more to come.  We are watching a train wreck in slow motion...
I'm not convinced it will be a train wreck... the things happening there right now happen with so much bluntness and blindness, it looks like they have a plan in front of their eyes and are sprinting there without caring much about what gets trampled on the way to it. I can't believe they would kill off a very solid business so rapidly and bluntly only for short term profits. I'm still curious about their big plan, my guess is they will take good care of a select group of (in their eyes) good photographers lifting them towards midstock, the rif-raf will have to decide how far they bend before they drop out, as they will only be there to fill a couple of forgotten corners of the site and couldn't be cared about less.

UN-BE-LIEVABLE, it looks like that whole HQ is gone completely mad... they pull one bad stunt after another while remaining dead silent when people ask very rightful questions. Lobo seems to be the only one around with as full time job referring tricky questions to contributor relations for a non-answer and nipping potential fires in the bud.
I really, really wished i could be a fly on the wall there in Calgary to see whats the real story behind all this madness.

I think the next one might be vivozoom. Never sold anything there and their database is shrinking because many seem to pull their port there (Yuri included, and they advertised big with his name).

Artemis, I am so relieved I am not the only one whose head spins when people pull out the charts and start doing the calculations.  We have to stick together :)
not half as relieved as i am Lisa! ;) Many people here seem to juggle the numbers around with such ease i really felt like the dumbest kid in class. Feels good to have some reassurance it's not entirely my feeble brains and to have someone helping doing the maths!

Lisa (and family!)and zzz: a BIG, huge thanks  for spelling it out for me, never could have figured it out on my own! :) The system is so different from what i assumed (if i get $30 royalties today makes 150 RC's..not) i really felt lost... Still trying to wrap my mind around this (why do canister levels matter as independent for example?) but at least i can do the maths going with your examples :)
They surely went out of their way to make this as complicated and un-transparent as possible for the dummies.  I've been calculating and am also in line with the estimates. 0,26 per credit and 3,8 RC/dollar (avg $7 per download which i think is surprisingly low). Issue is we have to use the RC's we got so far to calculate this and i think those are off for me. In this calculation with 3,8 RC's /dollar royalty i should have received over 700 RC's since the announcement, i only got 450+. I'm sure they'll claim its a math error on my side which it well might be, but i'll never be sure and my distrust is bigger then ever (also proven with sharply's 2nd chart, i made the needed $2800+, yet i still lack 2K RC's?!). Blegh :(

iStockPhoto.com / Re: Extrapolating Redeemed Credits
« on: September 26, 2010, 16:41 »
Here's a rough estimate: If I divide my redeemed credits by my royalties so far this year it works out to 1 redeemed credit = $0.53. I'm at diamond level, so you'll have to adjust this if you're not at that level. Here's a handy dandy chart:

Level   Commission   Redeemed Credit Value
Base           20%                    $0.27
Bronze        25%                    $0.33
Silver          30%                    $0.40
Gold           35%                    $0.46
Diamond     40%                    $0.53

So if you're at silver level and you earn $200 in a month, that works out to $200/0.40 = 500 redeemed credits.
Wow.. turns out i dont get this RC thing at all. sorry for my dense-ness (its genetic, i cant help it and it manifests itsself extra when maths are around), but i always thought we got 1RC for each istock credit spent on our pictures, so i was convinced it was more or less 1RC = $1. So in my assumption, as independent, if i sold an medium for lets say $2 commission @ 20% makes roughly 10RCs. totally wrong..?   :-\
Also, according to your full chart as independent silver i'd maintain 17% at $2816... i've sold over $2800 but am still only at 10000 and a bit+ RC's for this year.
I'm lost now, can anyone explain in dummy language how i can find out how much RC's i should get per $'s royalties? To have at least a slight idea if they update correctly? (the RC's so far divided by royalties would work, but im still convinced my RC's are totally wonky and i dont see the trees through the forest anymore, so i have no clue if, and how far off they are...)
Geez, do i feel utterly dumb...

what does that mean to be "ignored"?  they can't see anything you post or you just can't sitemail them?

OT: Congrats, Jami! Looks like you're "doing it right" as jsnover instructed - I see you've got two people ignoring you. I've still got you beat. I'm up to four! I like it that you can see everyone's stats. That hawk_eye has the highest I've seen so far with nine!

So far, mine are consistently updating the day after the sales.

Really?! Hmm.... strange, mine have updated 3 or 4 times after 'the announcement', every time for a fraction of the amount i sold. Maybe time to shoot a mail to support.

This issue has been brought up a few times in the 'where do we go to from here?' thread, but there is a main thread on the help forum:
http://www.istockphoto.com/forum_messages.php?threadid=253622&page=1
However, I can't explain why Lobo couldn't get a straight answer way back when the thread was started.
His current posting, that he'd rather give an accurate answer is creditable, but rather disingenuous. It's surely a simple enough question, and you'd think he could get a simple enough answer. (even if it's only, "Your reported RCs are not currently accurate, but they're working on it"). Seems very odd that he can't.

Thanks for pointing me to that post Sue :)
The reply is there now and the bottomline seems to be: for some contributors there seem to be irregularities, if you suspect you're one of them, contact support.
*sigh* My payout rate for the entire next year depends on this, i cant afford it to be "wonky" (definitely not because i'll make it just, or just not).
