David;

I am getting about 30% of my Shutterstock files rejected because they are not over 4 mpix.  Is there a way to set the size at 4.2 or 4.3; I have set at 4 but unable to set a decimal percentage?

Can't reply right now. Gone to look for oil.

Elena, come back to Russia ;D, it is -34 here today in Far Eastern Russia.  Plenty of frozen ground here also.

my opinion regarding DT, wanna have your work online? go exclusive! :)

Nonsense, I was DT exclusive.  If I submitted an image of a wild animal from the front they would not accept the same animal is photographed from the rear, to similar.  I have images with an animal jumping after food and another with the animal static; they would only accept one.  The policy is bad; for exclusives and non-exclusives.

Honestly, without FTP, the upload process is so slow; it will take weeks to get the 250 images online needed for the bonus.

Even with my creepy slow internet in Far East Russia, I can Filezilla FTP 40 images in an hour.  I have been on your site for an hour and have not completed five images.

Furthermore, with FTP, I can upload to multiple sites through lightburner; with your upload system, it is you and only you.

Ah, here comes the sad story! ...

LMAO, thanks Elena

Lighting / Re: isolation light requirements - lighting newbie

I picked up a set of Speedotron Brown line lights over 20 years ago.  These lights were not cheap (for me), but I saved until I could buy them, 20 years later I'm still using them. Good investment!

you can buy used sets of Speedotron and photogenic on ebay for about 300.00; four heads, a power pack and you are good to go.  Add a set of light stands, a white sheet on the wall and fire away.

Now that I will be using lightburner, I will load to all sites it supports.

Sorry but I'm getting a little confused. The lightburner site says it's run by Pixamba. But Pixamba shut down back in May? How does this happen? At least it's Beta and run for free. But it is confusing?

Beats me, it works and they respond to email; must be someone managing the store.

glad to hear that it is going good, I guess having pictures opted-out isnt a good idea

i had read so many horror stories about low acceptance rates with SS and IS, i want to make sure my stuff would be accepted by the top agencies.  I submitted 30 images to SS with greater than 75% acceptance; these were not my top sellers, just regular stock.  This gives me a solid belief that my images will be accepted.  A couple of these 30 were also rejected by DT, but not the same ones rejected by SS.

Update:  Just got the results in on 20 samples I had submitted, now at near 93% acceptance with SS; I am pleased my work is acceptable to SS.

Thanks all.  I am having good luck with acceptance at SS; the one agency I can upload to test the waters without the images going up for sale (opt-out).  I expect some images to not be accepted by agencies that were accepted by DT but then again, I expect some images that were not accepted by DT to be accepted by others.

I have lightburner setup and ready to go as soon as my exclusive contract expires; in a fact, since lightburner stores the images for four days I will start the uploading a couple days early.  i also have deepmeta setup and ready to do the uploads of the first 18.

Luis; the reason I went exclusive with DT was, at the time, I did not have the ability to load images to multiple sites (limited internet).  I was only on the other sites for a month (or so) but was seeing good sales with IS and FT.  Was not on SS and no sales with BigStock.  I had loaded with mostphotos and DP but not enough time to see sales.  I had also loaded images with CanStock but they never got reviewed so deleted that account also.

Now that I will be using lightburner, I will load to all sites it supports.

I also have about 100 business card templates setup and ready at theartofbusinesscards.com plus a store at zazzle.

DT is pretty selective for wildlife; they will not let anything close to a duplicate in of an animal.  So my acceptance rate on DT is 80%; that translates to at least 1000 total images I can submit to others.  DT is also very picky about depth of focus; if you take an image of animal and you are close to the ground, they will reject because of the blurry foreground even though the animal is tack sharp.

I expect I will encounter different standards; I accept that fact.  Before I went exclusive with DT, I was submitting to 11 sites.  All the majors except SS; was getting roughly the same acceptance rate from all (some a little higher and FT a little lower)

You have some nice wildlife images but I don't think wildlife sells as well as some of the more popular stock categories.

With your 800 images at the top four sites I would say $250 - $350 per month.

That would be acceptable, 2.5 to 3X would make it worth the extra effort.  Add another $1000 a month and i will be close to minimum wage. ;D

the rule of thumb would probably be, double what you are earning now in the long term as your images would have more than twice as much exposure. but it would it would also mean twice as much hard work for you though up ahead.

Double?  That is not so encouraging; much more than twice the hard work as must upload, set categories, etc for multiple sites.  I was hoping for triple current income.  Anyone want to bid 3, triple going once, going twice...

Triple to the man in the red water, now do I hear 4......

I know this will be inaccurate but I am curious what my possible projected monthly income might be.

I am converting from exclusive at DT to multi-submissions.  I have 808 files on DT (hopefully will have that up to 1000 by months end), monthly income of roughly $70-100.

Assuming I upload to the big four (actually, the big 3 as already submitted to DT) and a few of the middle tier; what would be my projected income.

IS will only allow 18 uploads a week so it will take time to get files on there.  I have been accepted at SS, Veer, FT and all other agencies so no waiting time to be accepted.  I will also be submitting to Business Cards, Zazzle, et al but do not wish to include these in projected income.

All these groups fit the story of my life; "well qualified but not qualified to join".  I guess I need to wait a couple years to have the sales numbers but then the dividing line will most likely more again.  Then again, in a couple weeks, I will qualify for Leaf's group.

Because this was my first year, 10 months actually, and I was exclusive with DT, I did not answer the survey but I appreciate all the work that went into producing this survey.  Very educational; this will shape the direction I take as I now venture into the non-exclusive status and spread myself among other sites.

I am glad you find the survey helpful.  It doesn't matter that you are so 'young' in microstock or exclusive to dreamstime though.  Getting all perspectives is important in a survey like this.  If only the long terms microstock artists or only those who contributed to 10+ agencies answered the results would be skewed.  We need both beginners and experienced artists to answer for the results to be accurate.

The fact that you only submit to Dreamstime and have only been involved for 10 months would both show up in your answers so it would all be taken into account.

Thanks Leaf, completed the survey.

i find it very interesting that DT makes up 5% of the average income but the other three "big 4" make up 69 percent of the total. Now that I will no longer be exclusive the DT, if my sales of my existing portfolio increase to reflect this average income, I will be pleased.

General Stock Discussion / Upload Bonuses, Cash
« on: February 04, 2011, 03:36 »
Are there any sites offering upload cash payments now; my exclusive contract with DT will expire soon and I would like to start my uploads where I can get a bonus or two.  Of course, I will also populate SS, Veer, et al but just want to make sure I get images to the ones offering cash.

i agree with Anita, stick with batches of 20 or less.  i was also recently accepted and will be uploading soon in small batches.

DT exclusive, last full month of being exclusive at DT.

Up almost double my previous four month average in money earned.  Total files online is 805 for DT.  Working hard to prepare images for the new sites coming later this month.

Most seem to report that DT is anywhere from 10-15% of their total income.  That being said, if I can make an addition 85% off the images I currently have, I will be pleased.
