Frankly I have myself considered that rather then having a spread of images all over the place and considering the way SS and Adobe are acting etc to delete all ports ( not the RM ports) and throw it all into IS.
Yebbut you've been swithering for a couple of years at least, so you're clearly not fully convinced.
Well Im convinced as far as earnings, yes! but its also lots of hassle like 6 months wait, deleting all files at all other agencies. Not something done in 5 minutes.

Jeez!!! unbelievable and some people wonder why sales are down. No wonder! you can sit there and upload buckets and buckets of files without even an 0.38 sale!!..just one big slope to nothing.

Be aware that not all exclusives are doing well (I'm earning between 1/3 and 1/4 of my previous earnings, but as that also applies to rpd, I haven't submitted anything for almost two years) . Some are, those with very high shooting expenses. However, I don't know how vector/ raster artists are doing, and the different media have tended to differ in terms of returns.
Sure Sue! I know but considering the right content not so much quantity but the right commercial content many are doing just fine. Frankly I have myself considered that rather then having a spread of images all over the place and considering the way SS and Adobe are acting etc to delete all ports ( not the RM ports) and throw it all into IS.

I have a theory which says Shutterstock themselves are producing these spam images and populating their search. I don't think any sane person will do these kind of stuff.
Microstockers and insanity go hand in hand
Along with conspiracy theories
No point in conspiracy theories anymore its got beyond that. Just a pityfull and embarrassing place nowadays and thats weather you earn good or bad. Just pathetic!

And, they could easily dump 100 million of crap. but that would be completely cost prohibitive.So. the fat lady has sung her song and here we are.I would pay to hear why they wanted to kill the site.
Bleed it dry and cram the last drop of blood out of the business! they have made their money and now its time to just take the lolly and run. Screw customers and some 50K members! Hahaha! glad this site only represent 15% of my income!

Hahaha! my God! worst example of a port I have ever seen, worse then the pot-smoking port! and all the weed!...shows you what ambitions SS house nowadays!...actually I find it rather disgusting and insulting.

It's obvious here that there are many (who are probably doing well) looking at life through SS tinted glasses. Sales have stopped dead for no reason for a few days THIS IS NOT NORMAL !!!!!!! THIS IS MANIPULATION OF THE ALGORITHMS.
Several things: SS (probably) doesn't manipulate individual algorithms. However, they are frequently modifying it, which is understandable. Tbh, I would pay a lot to know how to be always on first position, as I would be able to earn even more money. Therefore, the algorithm remains secret, but time passing by, several criteria start to become obvious, thus leading SS to change it, even slightly. Furthermore, it is a good way to experiment parameters that could be more profitable. It lacks of transparency, but at least it prevents spam and algorithm bombing.
Seen from the point of view of someone who has been managing webadvertisement accounts, I don't see it shocking. Even on mid businesses, with several hundred sales a month, there were huge differences, day after day. Furthermore, there are business specifics you don't always understand. Coming back to SS, for instance, I have noticed over the past months that most of my sales will occur during the middle of the month. Knowing the fact that I have uploaded pictures of various topics during this time, I can't explain it, but I don't call this a trend, and, in some case, seasonality.
To summarize, I see as well pretty impressive stalls (-70% sales between the first and the second half of March, for instance), they are pretty stressful, but I don't see them as an issue, as long as the mid term and long term indicators remain positive.
One last thing: if there were a conspiracy I could believe in that could explain most of the irregularities, but that I haven't been able to prove, it's the theory that SS is trying to hide technical issues impacting the sales record adjusting the revenue afterwards with SOD's and other "adjustable" rates. Over the past months, I have noticed indeed that every drop in sales that was due to an official (or non official) issue on the website was followed by one or several SOD's of higher rates that I could not track. I have no proofs of it, maybe it's just my need for order, but it's not that impossible, given that I have done it in another field of webmarketing, working for a platform dealing with digital inventories.
What would you say to someone that gets the basic same amount of sales 7 days a week for the Last 3 Months Give or take 1/2 Images. Lucky?
Its so incredibly rigged and cooked!!. people are leaving in droves and at BS as well. I PM you about something! you wont believe this!

Youre absolutely right! SS and Adobe havent got a clue of how to sell footage! Adobe is even worse! I wouldnt bother with any of them as regards to video total waste of time.

They've been giving me a bunch of silliness lately. The last one was that the name photographer and the name on my account have to be the same. Which has no legal standing, and is crazy, because I list my business as the name on my account, and I am the photographer, as I am a person.
Yeah and this is just as silly! as if one have time to chase around "real" models for all different MR's.

It would be interesting if anyone has kept a record of the poll I expect there's been a long term decline across the board particularly the low earners
I actually thought the screen captures would bring some comments on the state of Microstock. Maybe most here don't read the "Newbie Discussion" area?
Things like, look how many agencies there were that made the list in 2012? 19 (whatever the numbers, 50 people or more were voting)
Look at what IS numbers were when the totals were combined vs split. IS was 50 - now Ind are 25 and Exclusive are 200 many months...
Fotolia/Adobe and Pond5 are the only two that have gone up in the poll. (did I miss something?) Make a note for Alamy but that has to do with who votes more than earnings, as I know personally the licenses there have dropped in dollar value, but have increased in number.
It confirms what we already know I think so not really much to say...other than despite all the complaining about it SS remains by far the dominant earner. Across the board its a much tougher business and its not about to get any easier
only because they have probably 100 million more files and 50.000 more photographers!! stands to reason they are No.1 but on the whole I bet it evens out!

Know him personally a little bit! met him a few times. Fine-Art with a large 8x10 plate camera! this is highly accepted by art-buyers, galleries, museums etc if you do what he does. In the huge world outside stock-photography this is not that unusual. Many art-directors, ad-agencies still wants film and the larger format the better.

After 13 years with Micro. Adobe and DT completely gone, dead as doornails. Its all to obvious what they are doing and its far from ethic to certain portfolios. Its basically all about SS. Weather good or bad todays micro is all about SS.

Seems to me you are more interested in private indviduals rather then adding to the conversation. Whats your port like? a "generalist" port I suspect? I concentrate on nature, wildlife, travel, time lapse, but I'm not afraid to throw in some technology, 3D renders, a computer or a studio shot here and there.
well that wont get you very far out in the real world of photography, outside stock-photography. In that gigantic world of commissioned, advertising and corporate work the only ports that count is the specialist portfolio 100% geared to what you do! may it be still-life, life-style, medicine, industry, portraits, fashion, glamour, etc, etc. If a client wanting to buy pictures for a travel catalogue it is of no use he invites photographers carrying studio-work, is it? if he invites photographers planning a aircraft shoot I bet he dont want to see a portfolio of Fashion/glamour?? and the very LAST thing a picture-buyer wants to see is an "everything but nothing " portfolio! Nice little rant, but who is talking about commissioned work? I do stock because I DON'T want to do commissioned work. I say no to 9/10 requests because I like to film/photograph/produce what I want, on my terms, in my own time.
I sell stock to make money selling stock. Not to get corporate gigs... Therefore, I prioritize maximizing stock sales, staying in the "fantasy world".
And specializing in an area is a little bit bigger than specializing in one single subject. For example, if I do nature, and discover that sunrises sell well, I don't fill my portfolio with 90% sunrises. No client needs 900 sunrises, they need one or three. So I fill my portfolio with animals, landscapes, mountain aerials, different locations around the world, etc.
The same if you're an industry specialist. With 90% cogwheels/ball bearings you're a cogwheel/ball bearing specialist, not an industry specialist. All you're doing is diluting your own sales across multiple items. You could be a lion specialist, but would most likely sell a lot more if you also photographed tigers, panthers, cheetahs, zebras, elephants, crocodiles and sharks.
Some variety is of course good, but stop at 10, or 50. Not 1,000... Search engines like sales numbers. They ALL do. With too many slightly different images of the same subject all you're doing is lowering the chances of really high sales on particular items.
Well the engineering parts alone sell for around $ 17-23K per year which pleases and yet its all my oil and gas industry images which outsell anything else by lightyears. All in all I agree with you 100% and you have some great images in your portfolio and some even too good for micro-stock! Youre analogy is correct!

Not bad! 3 EL's and one large single-sale saved the week but hardly any OD's and very, very few subs-sales. Strange its normally the opposite! this week however well its only Tuesday!
Uncle Pete! funny how different it goes, for me Adobe is a complete write-off. I dont even visit the site anymore and in a choice of leaving one of these two since they totally compete with each other I have to stay with SS.

This is the site where every single thing is broken, glitches and bugs prevail more then sales, new files or as above videos dont show and dont sell. Its a joke a complete joke. If it wasnt for tens of thousands of suppliers and gazillions of files the place would go bankrupt!

It amazes me as soon as the going gets tough and takings are down they start pushing sub-packages pissing off all serious suppliers capable of uploading quality and commercially viable images. Sure sign of just a downhill struggle. Should be the opposite! but no not DT! they have been doing this ever since new year and they wonder why people quit?? haha!
