iStockPhoto.com / Re: Clustered search results on IS
« on: March 13, 2011, 21:08 »
I jost got normal style although only 1 out 12 of my images came up in the search results and 2 out of 12 when I tried different terms.

not sure what you mean by clusters, is it like the alamy stacks that were an enormous failure and they got rid of after about 3 months?

I always find it strange that someone would bother with fake credit cards to buy photos. I think of many other things I'd grab first, especially when you look at the number of pirate sites full of stock photos. last time I look Heroturko was pushing the big 4 for traffic. why not just grab a pirate copy if that is your inclination.

what use is that if the people have to sign an NDA? Sounds like a nice way to muzzle even more people who are critical of iStock. This is the crappiest suggestion yet.

And why are people nominating Sean? What a foolish move. Sorry. But it would be the worst thing to have him muzzled. I can't believe people are falling for this. iStock treats the contributors like chumps and they fall right in line like good little Kool-Aid drinkers.

And why only exclusive members???

whats this about?! what brought it on? what are they going to discuss?

whatever it is I agree,  we'll tell 5 people what we what them to hear and they wont be be able to tell anyone else? what's the point?

123RF / Re: 123RF Serves Termination Notice to Pixmac
« on: March 10, 2011, 21:05 »
How do you 'join' Pixmac directly? I don't see any links to sell directly with them, much less any detail of commissions or ToS.

We're not hiring a lot of photographers. Our primary focus is marketing, selling and perfect customer experience. On the other hand, we're working on a section to introduce contributors to Pixmac if they are interested.

This is some basic info:
http://blog.pixmac.com/2816/calling-all-photographers-submit-your-work-to-pixmac/

ToC:
http://blog.microstockgroup.com/major-press-release-from-pixmac-fairness-in-front/
http://www.pixmac.com/page/termsandconditions

Seems like every few months something problem pops up about pixmac (do a search on 'pixmac'), trust takes a long time to rebuild especially when new problems keep coming up :) (although that's better than istock's almost daily issue LOL)

Commissions are different between the two docs you posted :)
You're T&C still talks exclusivity which you say in one of the docs is Exclusivity is something like DRM in music. It doesnt work long term.
"Were trying to become a true Open Company" good and thankfully you've got rid of the $0.02 commissions but "Subscription    30% ($0.25+)    40% ($0.25+)" implies that higher amounts are possible for subscription sales??, however based on your front page pricing, artists cannot recieve the more than the $0.25 minimum???
still have credits earned expire in 1 year so if you havent made payout too bad you lose your earnings.
etc etc

Mostly just typing the first word (if it's longer than the second) will get you in. Also capitals and punctuation marks don't have to be typed. But it stays annoying.

Oooh, this VERY useful info! For some reason the second word seems to be harder for me to decode. :) Thanks! :)

I HATE THAT F***ING THING, STUPID NON-WORDS WITH WEIRD BITS AND PIECES AND LETTERS OVER THE TOP OF EACH OTHER!!!!!!!  AAAARRRRRGGGGGGHHHHHHH!!!!!!!

anyway, my little rant done, definately thanks very much !!

Computer Hardware / Re: Are CF Cards Extinct?
« on: March 08, 2011, 19:23 »
My new cf card arrived today from hong kong (ebay)  ;D

With the push towards smaller, it also seems to be going towards sd with much only higher end using cf.  I could see that many shops dont sell 5dII/a900 level cameras and therefore wouldnt sell anything that uses CF.

Personally SD is cheaper and faster (unless paying top dollar), just as reliable and I'd rather go back to it :) :)

« on: March 08, 2011, 01:39 »
been looking into this a bit but stretching my knowledge.

ktools uses gdlib? for image processing so the php memory size comes into play. Mine is fixed by hostgator at 64M and they will not change it (had problems here with album software, so I knew to look) anyway it limits the size of an image (from memory 24mp image needs it be set at around 150mb). Anyone have problems with this? did you have a solution? should I change host?

I get a lot o el's there.

overall per month averaging around (maybe slightly higher) than BigStock and canstock, but is more variable, last month almost nothing until the last week and then boomed enough to be almost back on par. now slow again.

General Stock Discussion / Re: Photographers beat Microstock
« on: March 04, 2011, 10:15 »
although updated, the PD article is quite old. I think on here we talked a couple of years ago about how many customers have read it and then probably gone to the micros to get cheap images :) Dealt with PD years ago cant say I'm convinced on PD deserving of the super-ethical soapbox that it is trying take.
I think it is all a bit too late for the anti-micro stuff, its here, its done there is too much money involved. Perhaps if more macros had been more willing to take people on, copy some of the croudsource model, make huge libraries like alamy, things may be different...

must be, I know they are locked down to some extent. I used to have problems with veer until they made changes, but everyone else works.

I just changed from active to passive and it now works perfect :)

when I try ftp I just get :(

Command:   PORT 129,180,75,58,196,163
Response:   200 PORT command successful
Command:   MLSD
Response:   425 Could not open data connection to port 50339: Connection refused
Error:   Failed to retrieve directory listing

hmm, connects fine at home, exact same settings, same version of filezilla at work ;) and I get the error...weird

Check photoattorney.com - lot of indepth analysis about that. I was seriously surprised how idiotic agencies are about this - 80% of their requirements for MR/PR are just fear and not based on real necessity.

especially when agencies will pass the blame straight onto the photographer

General Stock Discussion / Re: Who copied whom?
« on: March 02, 2011, 14:55 »
how is that pagerisim?

2 diff models
2 diff scales
2 diff apples

The person did not buy/steal his photo and then passes it as his own!?

Does Youri own a patent on the pose concept? banning anyone else from posing with a scale and apple on a white background!!!!

I have been watching people overreact with stuff like this for a while and i never say anything. But i know for a fact we have copied poses and concepts in our own ports, no?

Want a link to a legal page where it has been tested in court? The person who copied, lost, a number of times. Based on the pose, dress, and situation.

You can be too close to the original by copying important elements of a photograph. In this case, it's not just a concept that's copied. The second indication is the title which isn't just coincidence and almost identical.

Yes there are many ways to photograph a girl with a scale and maybe even the apple is just a common elements for healthful food. But add the pose, the outfit, the body position, and you get, mighty difficult to believe it was just a coincidence. :)

I'm amused, but not surprised.

different white background :)

Adobe Stock / Re: Earnings per sale
« on: March 02, 2011, 04:50 »
feb 2010 - 381 sales = $504 = $1.32 per sale
feb 2011 - 444 sales = $378 = $0.85 per sale

more sales but less money, per sale I only earn 64% of what I did last year

for the 3-4 months before the commission cut I averaged 350-380 in 7 day rank, since then I average 520-540. I'm still a few months away from gold (and go back to previous commission), my guess is about the top 400 people were unaffected (of who knows how many)

Shutterstock.com / Re: bigstock?
« on: March 02, 2011, 02:09 »

Like others the lowest sale I've had on BigStock is 50c but the quarters add up faster on Shutterstock. Different markets, different buyers, same images.

Have you ever heard of Yum brands? They all sell franchised food, they all compete with each other. They are all owned by one Corp.

Pizza Hut, Taco Bell, Kentucky Fried Chicken, Long John Silvers and A&W.

Some stores are KFC/Taco Bell, I've seen a KFC/Long John Silver and a Taco Bell/Long John Silver.

As long as Shutterstock and BigStock pay me, I'm happy. I'm not so sure I see some conspiracy here to drive anything down, just to bring in more sales of more images. It's not always about us?  :D

Not sure if they still are but they used to be owned by pepsico along with smirnoff, dozens of other alcohol brands, lipton and they have something to do with starbucks :)

I bought stockphotoscript about 2 years ago, it was very basic including only uploading 1 image at a time, didnt bother with it. looking at the page it doesnt seemed to have changed.

I have slowly started looking around at them again, noticed comments on pixaria forum mentioning requests that hadnt been brought into v3, including having different sizes, so that has been ruled out for me.
