General Stock Discussion / Re: Did users really beat Instagram?
« on: December 27, 2012, 17:01 »
I had a sense that Instagram, when they backed off their original language change saying that it was taken wrong, were lying. Instagram, FB, Pinterest, and Google itself are our enemies in a long-term war against copyright. When we lose our rights, they make billions, and they know that very well. It is some of us who fail to understand it.

The photos are beautiful.  So pleased to have been part of this. :D
+1 And I'm glad we got to see the photos after all! Thanks, Maria.

Thomas, thanks for taking the time to post this info. As you say, this kind of feedback should be really useful in deciding what kinds of images to do in the future and how to execute them. In the past, I have gotten ideas for new variations of my old images by seeing what designers have done with them in the real world.

+1  to all of the above. Merriest of Christmases and Happiest of New Years to everyone!

It is a real pity that I wasn't able to go there. Not having a proper Christmas party in my family anymore, these kids' joy and smiles are the best thing of Christmas to me.
Sorry to read that. What a shame! I guess there is always next year.  :)

I wonder.. I haven't uploaded any images in a few months and vectors I haven't uploaded in a few years - and I didn't get any email telling me how much they miss me.
I haven't submitted anything to IS for a long time either, but have received no email. For those who have gotten one, I'm curious, was it sent by Peebert, or Lobo?

Unless this is an in-joke, it must have been an incredibly long time. Peebert was  MIA and of legendary status only at iStock when I started in Dec 2006.
I just thought that - given IS's track record for making low quality business decisions - they might have brought Peebert back and put him or Lobo in charge of Customer Relations. It just sounded like something they might do (still haven't gotten my own return-invitation email, and I used to be Gold there).

If you think you have it tough in the US, come to Europe !
Endless red tape, taxation up to 50%, unions, strikes, overpriced gas, fuel, electricity, and transportation.

There's a good reason something like Silicon Valley cannot be replicated in Europe.
Yes, and the VAT tax in particular makes selling new technology products more difficult. Hope the pro-high-tax people in the US never succeed in getting a VAT tax installed here. It's a real high tech innovation killer.

And this are words of our friend Duncan:
+++we are continuing to set monthly sales records nearly every month in a row +++
Really, Duncan ?
I have no doubt that CanStockPhoto setting records every month. I had a down October - I haven't been submitting as much as usual - but my November has already beaten October by at least 10% and is about 30% above November, 2011.

Adobe Stock / Re: Shocking Fotolia Earnings Drop
« on: November 21, 2012, 16:15 »
I heard things have changed and active contributors get pushed.
This is true. If you don't contribute regularly, you get severely punished in the search results. In my experience, not contributing enough to clear their threshold costs you about 25-30% in earnings.

General Stock Discussion / Re: Unions kill another Company
« on: November 17, 2012, 19:08 »
They could limp along when times were good, but the prolonged recession is weeding out those companies where the top managers are not deserving their high salaries. inevitable, the only question was when.  They also had taken on way too much debt...
Why wasn't Hostess given a bail out, like the big banks which were mismanaged? They weren't 'weeded out'. Why wasn't Hostess taken away from the owners/investors, given a few billion dollars, and then handed over to the unions as a reward for their political support, the way Chrysler was?

I guess if you mismanage a Twinkie company you get weeded out, but if you have the right gov connections no amount of greed or mismanagement is enough to keep you from being handed billions of money taken from taxpayers.

Interesting puzzle. I'm a member of the Authors Guild of America and its site, nor any of the other real guild sites, seem to mention any authors coalition of america. And there is no wikipedia entry for it.

If authors coalition of america is a scam, I wonder why no google hits seem to say so? Strange.

General Stock Discussion / SSTK starts trading

Interview below from 'The Verge' with Shutterstock's SVP, Dan McCormick, on the IPO offering and the latest search technology that they're working on;

http://www.theverge.com/2012/9/19/3348446/shutterstock-microstock-image-search

Terrific link! In the scenario described in the article, in a future when most image-seekers get their images from free sources, SS will really be in the search business, competing with Google, presumably.

Personally, I doubt this will happen. But if it, or some other unforeseeable sea-change does occur, then potential investors in SS stock might be wise to think in terms not of current stock prices or SS's revenues. But maybe think more like Warren Buffet does, that you really are investing the company's management. If microstock changes entirely in the next, say, five years, which company's management would you bet would be able to adapt to the changes and prosper in the new environment?
A. iStock
B. Shutterstock
C. Dreamstime
D. Fotolia
A person who picked 'C', might be smart to consider jumping on the SS train for the long run, and not worrying too much SS's stock price in the early post-IPO period, or even stock market conditions for the near-term (which look very ominous). Of course, if the article is right, and if IS, FT, and DT were to all go out of business, then SS vs. Google would be a different ball game.

Personally, I don't think that Google vs SS is what will happen, and I think betting on SS's management to win the microstock game might be a smart play.

Newbie Discussion / Re: Who downloads microstock images?

Who downloads microstock images?
"There's Arnold the Browsinator, who looks for topical images he represents the bloggers and editorial demand. There are three types of designers: the freelancer, the marketer, and the specialist. The last category represents someone who is working in, say, the Parks and Recreation Department, who has been looking for "forest," "bears," and "rocks" for the last six years. The last type of user is Roberta the Task Bot, who has been given a list of specific images for a textbook, for example, and simply searches down the list."

General Stock Discussion / Re: Illegal download law Japan
« on: October 01, 2012, 17:17 »
Major companies like Adobe saw the writing on the wall years ago about the inevitable failure of copyright law. This is why so many programs are going online, eventually, you either have to pay a huge premium for a local machine install, or, it just flat out won't be an option. I've already found software products with zero plans for local install options.

It's happening.
I tend to think that Adobe's subscription offering is less a response to copyright infringement than it is a way to get licensed users to upgrade. In practice, most PS and AI users are still sticking with CS3.

Almost all of the people who upgrade to CS6 are printers and others who have no choice but to own the latest version, for the few clients who submit images which use the latest features. Adobe hopes to change that with subscriptions. From what I have seen, it looks like a hard sell. Most people are still sticking with CS3-5.

Selling Stock Direct / Re: I Hit My Goal for the Year

My sincerest congratulations. 8000 vectors is no small feat (it's about 4 times as many as I have made). It's not like you can make a new one just by pushing a little button on a camera. ;D

I am having a very good month (BME) with Bigstock... 8)
This thread belongs under Bigstock's own forum...
I didn't even know they had a forum. As for my month at BigStock, it was WAY down, then suddenly I got my BDE ever there yesterday. Something unusual must be going on.

General Stock Discussion / Re: Pictures of Earth
« on: September 26, 2012, 12:30 »
I notice a lot of stock images containing real photos of earth...
Some good 3D renders can look like real photos. There are some good 3D models and textures of Earth out there. They can be used to produce images which I cannot tell from photos.

It's always really slow.  I'm amazed that they still have customers as it is so frustrating.
True. I have wondered why people don't comment on this more often.

I had not been on IS (except to request payments) for months. Trying to do anything on the site is very frustrating, like walking in knee-deep molasses.

iStockPhoto.com / Re: Is your September down?
« on: September 19, 2012, 11:35 »
IS is getting worse and worse. But I don't give a * since it is a bottom tier for me.
+1 IS will soon fall below Vectorstock for me.

I do illustrations, and so far in Sept sales at most second tier sites are way down. However, SS, DT, CanStockPhoto, and FT are holding up well. No big September boost, but not bad. At SS, 1 EL, and the single downloads are up a bit from August.

CanStockPhoto.com / Re: CS ???
« on: August 29, 2012, 13:24 »
For me, Canstock remains a solid mid-tier performer on par with Bigstock, Fotolia and 123. Far exceeds iStock which continues a trend of WME every month.
+1 Good, consistent sales for my illustrations at CS.
