General Stock Discussion / Re: Corbis ? are they still about?
« on: December 16, 2010, 12:39 »
Hi Largercreek,

Yes RM is very alive despite what some people might say. Our company saw sales in the first two weeks of going live and that was through Corbis first so I know they are still making people money. I would tell him to try again it might be who he spoke to that day. The other thing is if he said he was already shooting for Getty it might make a difference but not usually. We don't have a contract with Getty yet because they are very hard to get into but I just keep banging on the door, someone will answer eventually ;)

Hi Largercreek,

Yes, Corbis is very alive. They are the second largest revenue producing agencies in the world behind Getty. Getting in is tough but that kind of specialty work sells well I am surprised he was rejected. He could go through a third party agency that is multi distributional and would allow him to sell his images through Corbis and dozens of other sites as apposed to just one and still only produce RM. He makes a smaller percentage with a third party but makes up the difference in being able to supply one hundred agencies instead of just the one. I would love him to contact us at www.SpacesImages.com that is just the kind of work we love to see.

General Stock Discussion / Re: Some examples of my work

Hi Ichiro17,

I use Genuine Fractals to up rez my work. It does a superior job with it's algorithm than PS does. However if you are going to up rez in PS it is best done in steps of 112%. It takes a little longer but the interpolation will hold up better under the magnifying glass. Here is the link  onOneSoftware.com/Genuine-Fractals.

I think that is a good approach Card Maverick but I am pretty sure from my conversations with Istock that you cannot do that if you are exclusive. I'll drop someone there a note and find out what the answer is and get back to those that are interested in what Istock have to say.

Thanks CardMavirick and Aeonf,

I appreciate the feedback that is what I thought, glad to get a clear answer on the subject. Do others agree with this point from Istock, I always thought so but it seems like we have mixed answers on here. Sean says he doesn't know and I would think he would be someone who would be sure. I guess I just want to make sure this is a either a no-no or a thumbs up.

Cheers,

 Hi Sean,

Maybe you could ask someone at Istock this seems to be a very grey area. Thanks agin for the help. That goes for any exclusives that might know the answer. I must add that the person asking used the term Hypothetically when asking me, I still felt it was an inappropriate question without the person first knowing if it was even allowed with his agency before e-mailing another photographer, I would not start e-mailing people and ask such questions unless I understood how my agency would feel about it. It's not just about not breaking the rules or walking a thin line, it's about business integrity. They even asked me for my advice. I am not an exclusive and you would think they would have a better idea than me.
The first question I would ask myself is " How would Istock feel about it " people may not like the changes they have made recently and might feel more justified in doing what is best for themselves but no one is twisting anyones arm to be an exclusive at Istock. If you choose that road you should have to play by their rules.

Hi Sean,

Thanks for the reply. Yes, we started out with a crew to show us the Red One  and cinematography without having to make the big investment and because of the learning curve. We made a deal that they would teach us video and we would teach them stock video and how to produce it at low costs, so you were right assuming that I don't shoot our video. I just haven't ever posted that we are on our own now.
I am confused on one point, sorry for my not being clear. Are you saying that an Exclusive at Istock can represent other photographers than themselves? I thought this was an absolute no-no. I ask you because there isn't anyone here that knows the ins and outs of Istock better than you.

Thanks,
Jonathan

 Hi Sean,

I do shoot my own video, I used a group to help me learn but they do not work with me anymore also I am not exclusive, neither is Yuri or Monkey business. I don't think exclusives can represent others work under their name or am I wrong. Thanks for the help Sean.

 Hi All,

I had an Istock Exclusive call me just last week wanting to rep me through Istock and offer me 35%. I don't agree with this kind of business practice. Stay above board and follow the rules or you get sent back to square one and have to roll again.

 Hi All,

A fully set up Red with prime lenses and racking focus as well as a strong enough fluid head and sticks not to mention continuos lighting or dolly work. You are looking at about 60K+ minimum. I have shot with the Red and it is not a pick up and shoot camera, there is a definite learning curve. The software is the best part as it is very intuitive but the camera with the batts. and all the equipment needed to create strong motion clips is going to set you back a pretty penny and it moves much slower than a DSLR with motion. The prime lenses alone will hit your bank account hard.

General Stock Discussion / Re: iofoto interview on John Lund
« on: December 06, 2010, 14:51 »
  Hi All,

John Lund is one of the great creators of the past two decades of conceptual work that is funny and sells really well. The nicest guy you will meet and so humble considering his immense talent and standing in the industry. I would suggest following his blog to anyone in stock. He was a big influence on my career.

Hi microstockphoto.co.uk,

Thanks for sharing unfortunately it dropped my sales by 1k. I am doing terribly at Dreamstime. They are at $540. This is very disapointing when they used to bring in so much more. So drop my monthly sales to more like 5.5k+. I can see the drop off at Fotolia and Dreamstime but my IS and SS has always been stable. Hope sales pick back up there.

Jonathan

Hi luissantos84,

I make almost the same from every site each month give or take a couple hundred. Istock keeps growing because I can only upload so many images a week. The other sites have more of my images but make about the same as my Istock, but Istock has my best RPI and should pass the others here soon as my monthly leader. This month SS was $1316 which was a bad month, I usually always see $1500+ consistantly. My Dreamtime was also down from $1500 to $1300 ( i am not clear how to get an exact monthly amount out of their site maybe someone could point it out to me, all I get is the graph and it has me somewhere between 1300-1400 so I am not dead on for them but I have another 1000 images to add to that collection as well so hopefully more growth there. Fotolia is coming in at $ 735.24 a down month, this has been my biggest disappointment they used to make me good money like the rest but they have dropped the fastest for me. The other 7 agencies add up to about $1500 a month all together so my monthly total for November was $6105 give or take a few bucks, x 12 = $73,260 if all the months averaged out to be the same as this month. I make about $200 dollars a day. This is from images I uploaded two years ago and have not uploaded since. I hope this helps.

iStockPhoto.com / Re: Buyers Bailing on Istock
« on: December 04, 2010, 18:35 »
Hi DonDing,

I read the article from Jonathan Klein saying the company would be looking build up the value to sell in 3-5 years once they were purchased by Hellman & Friedman, they were planning on "for lack of a better term" spinning it. Stock dropped from 90 to 24 in one year more or less and they bought it up to keep their information under wraps and not have to have to answer to stock holders. What is going on inside the machine is so hard to say these days and I think that is the way they want it to stay. I've been looking for the old article on Google but still haven't found it. I'll keep looking.

Hi luissantos84,

I made $1254.77 at Istock last month with 1400 images as a non-excusive, it was not a BME for me but it was close. I also like to hear numbers because percentages only shows us what the changes are from company to company not what we are actually earning. For me real numbers help me to establish what work would sell best where as well as many other things. I know a lot of people here don't like it but I am happy to share.

Cameras / Lenses / Re: Check out the Sony AIFA 55
« on: December 04, 2010, 00:15 »
Hi All,

I took a few frames with the camera today down at our local shop Glazers and brought them home. I was not very impressed with the noise in the blacks and we could only find a three frame HDR bracket setting when playing with the camera. I am going to speak with my friend that uses a version he says can shoot 5 frames but I can't seem to locate it. I did find another tool that is kind of cool. Not something you have to have but if you are doing time lapse, HDR's or want your camera to auto bracket more than it offers check this link out. https://www.promotesystems.com/products/Promote-Control.html

Cameras / Lenses / Re: Anyone shoot medium format FILM
« on: December 03, 2010, 14:20 »
Hi Leaf,

I still have two Mamiya 645 AFD bodies and several lenses. I like the 645 format as it feels like a 35 when looking through, it also gives you more frames per roll especially when shooting 220. These cameras can also be used with a digital back. Great camera, I started shooting stock on them and used Portra neg. film then scanned on an Imacon scanner, boy that was a lot of work compared to today. They are all just taking up space in storage.

Best,
Jonathan
