I am curious, for those of you who got refunds from FT and DT, were they for vector images or photos?
only photos

302
Very rare for me. It happens only with Dreamstime and Fotolia. Less then 10 times a year.
Istock absorbs the cost - I've red IS official post about this.

All information about Crestock strategy, review and pricing system you can find here:

For anyone who says "great idea, start that site and I will put my photos on it", remember that someone has to run a business and that's a big job. Even though Perrykudos to him for sharing his dreamssays he isnt planning to start that dream business, theres always someone who thinks it would be nice to have their own agency and doesnt realize the time and money involved. Not only setting up the business entity and web site but the day to day operations and ongoing costs for merchant accounts, business banking fees, data servers, hardware, etc. Even suggesting that photos be exclusive on one site means someone has to police it. A person with good photography skills may not have the time and/or skill set to make a go of running a business in addition to taking photos.
Micro investment site.
Each photographer put 500-20000$, we hire a professional team. We undercut prices first 18 months. All earnings are reinvest in the site first year.
Initial investors (us) will be owners of this business. No more changes "a la" FT or DT. We decide.

Fotolia just started with Video-Clips and are not an important moneymaker at all in this segment at the moment, because of this I can see for the first time that a boycott could be success-full.
They really need your clips but you don't miss anything if you don't give it to them. Everyone who knows a producer of Video-clips should tell them about it and invite them to this boycott.
Would be great to see one success-full boycott at last in the Microstock-Business. And Fotolia though success-full is definitely one of the most contributor-unfriendly agencies they really  need to be set to their limits.
Agree 100%
I've deleted all my videos. I hesitate to delete my full size images and upload them downsized to 4-5MP. Only 5cts more for high resolution photo is no good deal.

306
Oh I would not prevent them from being able to license an RF image for extended uses. I would simply make them purchase an RM license and pay more appropriate fees for the extended rights. The right to reproduce and sell images for $50 or so is ludicrous. To be able to do it for that minimal fee and still have RF rights to do it over and over, naw that is a bad practice that we should have never allowed.

Ok that makes sense. Now someone please start this agency  :)
Godot is on the way...
Seriously, why we cannot start it ? Many good agency, like Magnum,  were created by photographers for photographers.

307
ok, quick question from someone who admittedly has no idea, why is video different to say illustration which can take hours or photography which can also take hours for the right shot (not to mention almost $20000 now in gear, books, workshops etc) ?

(please take this as asking a question by someone who has no idea :), not as someone trying to start a fight :))
Like Sharpshot said +
- in video you have to use 95% time tripod with special head or steadycam (90% of my photos are taken without tripod)
- try to remove logos, tattoos. blur people in background in 20 seconds video (= 20s*30fps = 600images)
- special lights, more power = heavy battries
- no bracketing, no hdr. Difficult to fix exposure problems
- models more expensive
- good video = hundreds of good consecutive photos stitch together
- storage (original, edited file and sometimes different upload formats for different sites) - let's say 1-2 Gb for 1 video.

General Stock Discussion / Re: Donating Free Images (Poll)
« on: July 07, 2009, 21:02 »
Once, when I was young, I donate few of my images for free. It was very stupid think. Don't trust sites moderators that's good for you.

309
I'm waiting for reponse from FT support. If there is no changes I will delete all my video files from this week. Video is new at FT and sales are very slow. No pain to lose few dollars now.
I can lose much more in short time, when my HD sales from pond5, IS, SS... from 12-30$ become 3.8$.
With 249$ buyer can have 60 HD at FT. It's just insane. Kill it before it's too late.

General Stock Discussion / Re: Exclusivity, yes or no?
« on: July 07, 2009, 20:32 »
Another consideration is whether or not I can sell my rejected images as RM.

This is the clause in question:
Quote
You further agree that any Exclusive Content that is not accepted by iStockphoto and does not form Accepted Exclusive Content cannot be sold, licensed or otherwise made available to purchasers, licensees or other potential users without the prior written consent of iStockphoto. iStockphoto reserves the right to sell non-accepted Exclusive Content through another site or distribution venue determined by it, the compensation for which will be subject to a new rate schedule agreed between the parties.

The other ambiguous clause in the exclusive agreement is this one:

Quote
12. Effect of Termination
b. Upon the termination of this Agreement with respect to Still and Flash Content or Motion Content, or both, the grant of authority given to iStockphoto shall cease with respect to the relevant category of Content subject to the following conditions: (i) iStockphoto shall remove the applicable Accepted Exclusive Content from the Site and distribution partners within thirty (30) days of the termination of this Agreement; (ii) notwithstanding termination, iStockphoto and its distribution partners shall have the right to continue licensing Accepted Exclusive Content until it is removed from the Site or other sites where Accepted Exclusive Content is distributed and for up to (1) year following termination where such Accepted Content has previously appeared in iStockphoto's promotional materials, CD programs or distribution partner marketing programs; and (iii) regardless of the expiration or termination of this Agreement, iStockphoto will continue, in accordance with this Agreement, to pay compensation due to the Supplier at the non-exclusive royalty rate of 20% in respect of licenses granted to members during any transitional period, subject to any rights of set-off under this Agreement or at law.

It has been repeatedly brought up in discussion by people who understandably interpret this to mean that if you quit being exclusive, they will delete everything you uploaded as an exclusive. Admins have repeatedly countered by stating that is not the meaning of the clause, and that nobody's portfolio has ever been deleted against their will simply because they quit being exclusive. It is simply removing the "Accepted Exclusive Content" designation from the work, not removing the actual work.

I'm sure if it has happened, we would have heard about it. I haven't. Has anyone else?
I was exclusive videographer at IS. After canceled my exclusivity NO one file was removed.

Adobe Stock / Re: Premium Subscription
« on: July 07, 2009, 06:26 »
Very sad news. Just got FT newsletter.
No more size limit for subscription. We will only get 0.05 more for XXXXL subs sale.
We will get 3.60$ for HD video sale!
Fotolia was a good earner for me. But it's too much. I don't want be exclusive with IS but probably there's no other choice.
I have not finished uploading of all my videos here (After weeks) and now I can start to delete them.
It's so stupid.

312
Does version 4.0 pay better commission for subs?

Nope?!

Then kindly disappear and never appear again  :D

123RF / Re: 25c for a credit sale
« on: June 25, 2009, 10:16 »
Where do you find info about credits/prices?
In my email box. It was their response to my email.
I had a sale yesterday for .47.  Another today for .43.  Both were (B)log images.  Does anyone know how this works?
Not me. 123RF and DT are specialized in strange earnings.

123RF / Re: 25c for a credit sale

$0.25  earning 123rf response:
" This download was from our bulk purchase clients, therefore the cost of each credit is cheaper in this case"

$0.20 earning 123rf response:
"We've been running some promotions with some clients for which we gave completely free credits to them to test drive 123RF.com and our content.
We are paying out $0.20 for these credits"

They are generous ...with our money help. Once of reasons why I've deleted my account there.

I think I got one of these partner sales. I received this email this morning:

We're pleased to let you know that one or more of your files was sold via offline means.
The content was used on one of the partner sites announced in the consumer-oriented alliance:
http://www.dreamstime.com/thread_11224

Image ID: 2295049
Royalties: $1.09

They never clearly explain their earning system. $1.09 for what? 18.16 post cards ($1.09/0.06)?
They have to pay for every word in the email?

I think they could learn from DT's Level 1-5 system in which placement/price is earned either through sales on an increasing scale or through being an assignment acceptance.
and finally sell them for $0.35 ?

One way of working your way to the front page is participating in the assignments. Even if the assignment image doesn't sell, you'll get exposure and a chance of trapping a buyer in your port.
But don't forget that your image will be trapped for 12 months. :)

Dreamstime.com / Re: Can't get out of DT quick enough
« on: June 18, 2009, 00:47 »
Highly unrealistic.

Dreamstime added subscription sales in 2007.  We are half-way through 2009.  Enough already.

You've been complaining about DT and their subscription sales for over a year, yet you are still there. Instead of these tired rants, why don't you leave DT if you have such a problem with them?  Seems to me you've had more than enough time to wait out the lock-in period and "take a stand."  My guess is when push comes to shove, you'll take the subscription sales rather than take a stand.  Which is fine.  Just don't complain about the situations you have chosen to be a part of.
LOL
Hopeful there are people like me to make this world better ;D I stay (for instant) to help DT (giving my advices) to improve .
If there will be only two groups, 'wow-you-rock fan club' and 'contributors leaving in silence', nothing will change.

Hi everybody,
Sales at 123Rf picking up for me. Does someone else noticed it?
Can we have your definition of "picking up"?

For me 123rf was always dead (less than 30$/month). I gave up last month.

Pond5 / Video - Pricing at Pond5
« on: June 18, 2009, 00:26 »
Hi,
I start to sell my footages at Pond. Looks very interesting. With only 20 videos I have already 3 sales in 2 weeks. Compared to my portfolios (video) at IS and SS with over 200 files and only 3-5 sales/month Pond rocks. And they pay us 50%. I'll probably fix prices of my video at Pond  lower then prices at IS and SS. I still get more than at others sites. I prefer buyers go to Pond, it's win-win model. What prices you put at Pond?
Thanks

Dreamstime.com / Re: Price adjustments at Dreamstime
« on: June 18, 2009, 00:04 »
Let me see if I understood: the cost of credits will increase.
NO.
"This is not an update of the pricing in credits, but of the credit value itself. The credit amount required for image download will not change. Subscription plans will also stay the same. - Achilles Page 1
Our commission will be lower (the ghost from FT strikes DT?)
YES
we plan to adjust the royalty percentages in the upcoming months. We will first evaluate the results of the current price update. We hope contributors' revenue will not be affected and that the RPD remains at significant values - Achilles page 1
"The extra budget will go into marketing and sales. It will allow us to attract new customers (most of them will be new to stock as some of you assumed above)". - Achilles page 3
* extra budget = contributors money ;D

Dreamstime.com / Re: Thank you Dreamstime
« on: June 10, 2009, 21:26 »
As I was disabling my files at Dreamstime, something strange occurred.  An image I uploaded in 2007 suddenly had an online date of 6/5/2009.  I could not disable it.  I contacted support and explained the situation.  It turns out my image had editorial components to it, and had been changed from RF to editorial just 5 days ago.  Hence the online date change.
We can interpret things differently.
You are grateful, I would be furious because they block my picture for 6 additional months without notifying me.
I'm a bad guy ;)
Congrats Dan for your exclusivity. I think it's a good choice.

Your agent should handle this for you:
http://www.microstockgroup.com/general-stock-discussion/dmca-and-license/msg96039/#msg96039

LOL.
I'm sure the "agent" will handle this. Contributors problems are his priority.

« on: June 09, 2009, 22:26 »
It was a 12 credit sale for which I received $2.94. Can this be right? Thought I would ask advice here before taking it to Dreamstime support.
Good luck with DT support. I've NEVER got clear response about strange royalties from them. :-\
