General Stock Discussion / Re: Consolidate & Keep Only Stock Accounts That Are Worth It???« on: August 26, 2008, 21:02 »
For me, photography is a vocation, an avocation, and a way to volunteer for causes I care about. I started on my first microstock site - totally clueless - a bit more than a year ago, and still have extremely small portfolios. But now. being only 50% clueless, I'm close to conclusion there are only a couple of microstock sites worth uploading my particular kind of photos to. Anyway, it should be very interesting to see where stock photography business goes over the coming years.

Cameras / Lenses / Re: Nikon D700« on: August 16, 2008, 00:37 »
I got the D700 mainly for ISO (esp. concert shots for my "other job") and full-frame sensor. I also like that it has dust removal and kept the uncool
![]() Next concert isn't until next month, but if you click my SS icon below, you can see a few NYC and Santa girl shots. (Please be kind; I'm still learning the new settings). At 100%, you'd see its focus with 24-70mm 2.8 Nikkor lens is incredible: 330

I really liked Stockexpert's feature that allowed you to switch in improved versions of your photos, so photo didn't lose dl rating, but my very, very small portfolio is now gone - worrying my photos would end up for sale on photos.com was not worth it.

It is just to give a general idea so it won't make TOO much of a differance and depending on what your values were, if they were TOTALLY bogus they would be discounted anyhow. Thanks! Microstock Monitor / Re: still maintaned???« on: July 15, 2008, 11:18 »
So, if I understand you correctly, SY, the microstock monitor is just running on autopilot? I guess that would explain why LuckyOliver and GeckoStock are still on it.
For some reason I thought a different person was "in charge" of microstock monitor, so I sent him a note a couple of weeks ago that must have had him scratching his head. 333
Site Related / Re: RPI for all sites - cast your votes - messed up my vote« on: July 03, 2008, 13:14 »
Good grief, I'm sorry. I voted on right hand side poll for first time, and once I put my numbers in, and saw the results, it was obvious I totally messed up.
My Shutterstock RPI ended up looking lower than it really was, and other sites ended up with RPI's better than they should. BTW, I misunderstood on two levels. Until I reread Leaf's original post up above, I thought RPI meant number of DL's per image, not number of Dollars per image (which, of course, makes more sense). ![]() ![]() ![]() If one member's voting effects the poll in any significant way, it would be great if my June vote could be wiped out. ann 334

Alamy.com / Re: What is the correct way to upsize for Alamy?« on: June 28, 2008, 17:49 »
I assume above is about this image requirement from Alamy site:
"Uncompressed file sizes of between 48MB and 200MB. This means you should make your JPEG file from an 8 bit TIFF file that is at least 48MB. Our maximum size for the uncompressed file is 200MB." I use Photoshop to downsize, and use Genuine Fractals 5 plug-in to upsize images for posters, so I figure it would make sense to use GF for Alamy images, too. (Obviously, I haven't even submitted my trial 4 yet. I wish I had thought about this before I put up a few timely politician and some musician editorials for sale at the micros.) Anyway, for those familiar with Genuine Fractals - if I were to use it for Alamy, that means, uhm, I should shoot in RAW (of course), then change the tif file from 16 to 8 bit, and then do WHAT ![]() ![]() ![]() 336

Site Related / Re: Earnings poll - Income percentage or 10 rating« on: June 27, 2008, 00:28 »[...] I agree that it would be helpful to have explanation of how to vote included in the voting form. And it would be good to have something other than ranking, since - at least for this very small fry - there's no way I could come up with a 1 to 10 that's accurate/meaningful. For ex., June's been strong on one site, fair on another, weak on 2 or 3 others, and forget about the rest, so there's no real distinction between many of them. Maybe instead of percentages or ranking, we could rate each, we contribute to, something roughly along lines of: "strong" "good" "fair" "weak" "sos" - with the obvious understanding that they're all relative, so that "strong" for the heavy hitters could mean "enough for new camera body," and for the smallest of small fry, mean "enough to buy new lens wipes." 338

Microstock GTG / Workshops / Events / Re: Anyone going to Ref5resh in Malta?« on: June 24, 2008, 22:43 »
Thank you, michealo and bittersweet!
It was like a trip back to the time of the Knights of Malta when I was there. Still remember Valletta's stairway sidewalks, the forts, the sacrificial caves, the beautiful harbor, and ultimately, the ferry ride to Italy. (And it just happened to be shortly after I read Thomas Pynchon's "V" which features Valletta prominently. But that's another story, literally.) Anyway, can't wait to see the photos! smiles - ann 340

It's nice to hear some are already selling on YAY. Congrats!

New Sites - General / Re: Geckostock.co.uk closes shop« on: June 04, 2008, 09:54 »
Wow, until this thread I didn't know Geckostock was gone. I guess I missed the notification email.
Anyway, Richard was really nice, and even offered to send me some photos I'd lost thanks to hard drive crash and failure to back up frequently enough (though I didn't have to take him up on it since LuckyOliver came though on request I made to them a while ago and sent me DVD of my entire portfolio just before it shut down.) Leaf, have you decided what sites to replace LuckyOliver and Geckostock with on your monitor? I'd like to see you get as much opportunity as possibly to get referral credits, and it's a bit depressing to see LO and GS on monitor, though, of course, I don't have clue what kind of work's involved to update the monitor. not a time for smiles - ann 343

StockXpert.com / Re: How long did it take you to be accepted with stockXpert« on: April 20, 2008, 15:25 »
I recently got in on first try (unless I tried out so long ago, I don't remember it), but I have very, very small portfolio there.
As many have said before, it's hard to predict much about this business. For example, I need to come up with 3rd photo to get accepted to isp, and don' t have clue what "safest" image would be. smiles - Ann 349
StockXpert.com / Re: how to attach PR to image rejected for no PR« on: April 20, 2008, 15:14 »
Thank you so much for replying; it was so kind. I totally forgot that that's the first thing I did after uploading the PR.
I went to image, pressed edit, selected the newly added PR release, and then pressed submit. When button remained orange (with 'rejected for no PR message) for a while, I was concerned that my submitting/attaching the PR to image hadn't actually worked. So, THEN I wrote to Support with info about how I attached the PR. After continuing to see the orange button for a few days, that's when I posted on StockXpert forum, and days after that I posted here. smiles - Ann 350
StockXpert.com / how to attach PR to image rejected for no PR« on: April 20, 2008, 13:07 »
I submitted a particular (my best-seller) image to Stockxpert, and it was rejected for no Property Release, so I got and uploaded Property Release, and sent Support notification, including ID number of the rejected image.
No response for several days, so I also posted question in their "Technical Ques." No response. So, I figured maybe I should post it in Newbie section, but now I can't even find way to submit a new post anywhere on any forum. If anyone's been in similar situation of rejection for a Release that you could then submit once you knew they wanted it: HOW DID YOU HANDLE IT: Would it be best to simply be more patient and wait for them to get around to my communications? Or, is it standard procedure for contributor to delete a file rejected for no PR, and then resubmit, attaching the PR to to it right then? Thank you. smiles - Ann |
