General - Stock Video / Re: Who is doing 2D animations?
« on: October 28, 2020, 16:27 »
Who is into 2D animation? How many animation videos do you have? Are you earning regularly?

I just need inspiration if you guys are doing good with animation. I currently have 16 videos, and 8 of them are animations. I have had these videos since 2016. I halted my animation uploads, because I lack the motivation because it's still not earning a single cent.

I do a lot of different kinds of animated stock videos, from cartoon characters to motion graphics (particle effects) and 3D backgrounds or semi-3D animations (like earth/planet/moon stuff). I mostly use Adobe After Effects, Illustrator and sometimes 3DMax or Cinema4D.
It sells slower than illustrations but the RPD is often much better. However, I'm still just a small fish with 500+ animations.

You do need bigger volume to gain any tractions (and good quality content). Simple text animations (writing effect) hardly sell, it's needs to be unique and high quality.

123RF / Re: Sudden decrease in sales mid-October
« on: October 26, 2020, 05:02 »
The fact that they had to remove the footage side of their collection and the dwindling sales makes me think they won't last much longer. They've become a low-earner long ago and have shown no signs of improvement.

Adobe Stock / Re: Your account has been blocked?!
« on: October 20, 2020, 06:39 »
It's hard to say if they were in the right with this without examples.
At least you get the chance to 'unblock' your account with a simple confirmation email.

So I now see Adobes press releases everywhere, with people crowing about how Adobe is democratizing art by giving away images and footage for free, effectively helping to put tens of thousands of us out of business.

I dont see any press releases about Adobe democratizing anything by giving away their software for free, though. Wouldnt that be helpful, if Adobe fought their competitors who make their software available for free by also offering Adobe software for free? I know creatives were really angry that Adobe switched to a yearly subscription, which costs people a lot more.

Weird that Adobe thinks people should pay more for their software and nothing for other peoples work.

To be fair, Adobe did pay the artists for submitting their content to the free collection.

The program also supports a need for creative democratization to make high quality content available to all.

Does this mean everything needs to be priced to the lowest common denominator, or given away for free? i.e. people who normally couldn't afford stock images or video are now able to acquire that content, just because the barrier needs to be lowered to cater to everyone?

Why? What's wrong with making content available only to those who can afford it? It's not like stock images are overly expensive. Do artists have to suffer income loss just because some people can't or don't want to pay a reasonable license fee?

331
As long as the free content is not enough to satisfy customers' needs, they might still pay for our content.

But we all know how it went with Storyblocks: a free 'Unlimited' section with a 'Premium' content marketplace. For a while we did get Marketplace sales. Eventually, the free 'Unlimited' section would grow to such an extent and quality level, they could remove the Marketplace altogether.

Not saying that this is Adobe's endgame, but this premium freebies mentality is showing how agencies like to cater to customers looking for free or cheap, instead of premium buyers. It's once again the race to the bottom.
I predict that it won't be long before all major agencies have shifted towards unlimited downloads and artists get a "percentage of the rewards pool". Then it's game over for us microstock artists.

332
I've seen a number of tongue-in-cheek comments here about Adobe giving away software. I would like to remind you that we have given away tens of thousands of complimentary subscriptions through the Adobe Stock contributor Bonus Progam over the past couple of years and that we are continuing the tradition again with the 2020 program. So to answer your specific question... yes, for productive contributors Adobe is giving away a free app each year.

Not wanting to sound ungrateful for two years of free subscription on Adobe CC, but to be eligible we all had to actively produce and upload content to meet the requirements. So Adobe didn't really give it away for free, they received much more content and thus more revenue from active contributors.

333
What a depressing news. It has been said countless times before, but:

STOP DEVALUING OUR WORK! Customers already consider graphics and video as something cheap. Don't push it further.

Any attempt to drive traffic using free content sends the wrong message that photos/vectors/video are a cheap commodity, cheap to produce and that artists are only hobbyists doing it for fun and exposure.

However agencies refuse to listen to us, because THEIR revenue, their traffic and their shareholders are more important than the artists.
This once againshows that not a single agency out there is our friend, and they're all in it for themselves, not for the artists.

Yaymicro / Re: Yay reopening??

03 cents says my dashboard and I don't know for what!

That's a small royaltyfor the use of your images as promo material by yaymicro themselves.

335
Average for the last half of 2019, about $235 a month... average for 2020, about $425 a month. They've sent out emails saying they've increased the revenue pool four times since they moved over to just the membership library, but nobody knows how big that pool is or how many it's shared between, so not all that transparent.

Thank you for your insightful post!

336
Can anyone contributing there shed some light on what they earn on average? I wouldn't ever contribute, but I've always wondered how big their revenue pool is and what you can expect.

StockFresh / Re: StockFresh is closing
« on: October 01, 2020, 14:11 »
Just received an update from Peter following my reply:

Quote
Hey Colin,

It turns out I was a bit too worried about the financials of the business, and communicated prematurely. Im a developer and this is not my strong suit. The bottom line is that everyone will be able to request their earnings starting Oct 17. Until then its business as usual ($50+ payouts).

I apologize for the confusion, and if you have any questions feel free to email me at any time.

Best regards,
Peter

Good news after all! To be honest, I didn't expect an update after my reply, but it's confirmed: it turns out everyone WILL be able to request their earnings after Oct 17.

And my reply:

Hi Peter,

Thank you for taking the time to answer me. But your reply is very disappointing and frankly, I'm speechless. I always considered Stockfresh a fair agency towards contributors and I've supported you all these years. I expected more from Stockfresh regarding this matter.

I understand that businesses can fail and the microstock business is struggling. But the money in our balances belonged to us, regardless of the $50 treshold.

It's an agency's duty to keep the royalties for contributors separated from your daily business spendings. Apparently, somewhere during Stockfresh's decline you guys decided to use up the money that was reserved for contributors.
A$50 treshold is fine when the business is operational, but when the business intends to close down, it's a different situation. You can't simply point at the agreement and say that's what we agreed to.
The contract nowhere states that our earnings will be forfeited upon website closure, only confiscated when fraudulent activity occurs or account closure. The contributor agreement also never explicitly states the rules of payment in case of a shutdown, so for you to unilaterally decide not to pay outstanding royalties is simply mind-boggling.

Again, I strongly urge you to reconsider this decision, because it's unfair that contributors are victimized as well because of bad financial management.

A follow-up email from Peter:

"Hi Colin,

Thank you for the feedback. Its Peter from Stockfresh here.

In the last few years weve had a rapid decline in sales due to the fact that the entire microstock market has been struggling, meanwhile our costs have been growing to the point that we we were running out of funds. It became clear that despite our best efforts this business has no future, and we wanted to make sure we could still pay everyone were obligated to pay according to the contributor agreement (everyone above the $50 threshold), so we decided to close the site down.

I understand this is very disappointing, but based on the financial situation of the company it is very unlikely we can pay anyone else, and if we kept going on, the situation would only get worse, as the market itself is also getting worse. Im sorry we werent able to crack the code, but I see that its a huge struggle for everyone.

We tried our best and it went well for a while, but unfortunately things didnt work out in the end and the business failed. Theres nothing left to "keep for ourselves from it, all the money will go to contributors and some customers who will be given refunds.

Hope this explains it better, feel free to contact me any time you like."

It's an agency's duty to keep contributor royalties separated from business spendings, so that in case of a shutdown, we can all get paid. But what I understand now is that Peter says that there's not enough funds to pay everyone their outstanding royalties. Well, then they shouldn't have spent all the money that belonged to the contributors. I doubt it's even legal to do that.

Very disappointing to see them make this decision and then blame the microstock struggles. It's just bad financial management.

Finally got a reply back:

Quote
"Hello,

Thank you very much for writing.

Regarding the closure of Stockfresh, we are going to pay all contributors who are above the $50 minimum payment threshold, as stated in the Contributor Agreement (https://stockfresh.com/info/ca).

If you are below the $50 minimum payment threshold, you can either
        a) wait for customers to download your images to reach the threshold before October 17 and make a request before November 1, or
        b) contact support to have your images removed from the website without payment at any time, with immediate effect.

If you have any other questions let us know.

Best regards,
Customer support
https://stockfresh.com"

As sales are basically non-existent, there is no way I'll reach $50 before October 17th. Which means that any balance below $50 will not be paid out (if I understand correctly)...Which is very, VERY BAD.

Thanks, I'm going with Dreamstime!

123RF doesn't allow it anymore, AFAIK.

I need to know this rather urgently for a project: which agencies out there allow me to purchase photos with my own earnings?

Another small turd agency finally glug down after circling the bowl

Hopefully the biggest turd agency (SS) goes the same route, but since its the biggest turd it may need a plunger to finally get it to go

Why is StockFresh a turd? Just because it doesn't have enough sales, doesn't make it a turd. It was a fair agency.

I made 45 cent from Getty Connect  :)

It has now been a year since I closed my account, and I wonder how long it will take before these small payouts stop.
I'd like to know too, how long does it take after deactivation for them to permanently make the images unavailable? Does anyone know?

StockFresh / StockFresh is closing
« on: September 17, 2020, 06:12 »
Received this email:

After 10 years of operation Stockfresh is closing its doors on October 17, 2020.

Why are we closing?

As you probably know, the stock photography market has changed a lot in the last few years, and we don't feel we can make a meaningful contribution any more in the current business climate. The disconnect between what customers need in 2020 and their expectations regarding prices in a market that's been oversaturated for years makes it really difficult to build and grow a sustainable stock photography business. Therefore, for the time being we decided to focus our efforts on other projects.

How does this affect customers?

During the next 30 days, customers will still be able to buy your images using the instant download feature and use up all their remaining prepaid and subscription credits. They will also be able to re-download images they previously purchased for backup purposes, just like before, if the images are still available for sale on the website. After October 17, customer access to all images will be disabled.

How does this affect contributors?

As a contributor, your work will still be available for sale for the next 30 days by default, however you can request us to close your account early and claim your earnings at any time during that period, if you have reached the $50 threshold. During this time we'll not be able to accept any new submissions. On October 17 all remaining images will be removed from our servers automatically, and you will be able to request your earnings no later than November 1. To make this process smooth, please make sure your payment details are up to date.

Thank you very much for your continued support. It's been great working with you and we wish you the best of luck for the future!

Stockfresh
Best regards,
The Stockfresh Team

And another small agency bites the dust. It was one of my lowest earners, so it doesn't affect me. But they were a fair agency, and with the major agencies letting us down, there's now hardly a decent agency left.

Negative comments because if everyone had sacrificed a few weeks of income SS would have been forced to roll back their draconian royalty cuts and we'd ALL be back to higher royalties.

but that was NEVER going to happen - boycotts never get that sort of cooperation and a boycott with a publicly stated end date tells the boycotted they can ride it out. In addition, the vast majority of contributors likely never even knew there was a boycott.

that still doesnt excuse the negative comments and ad hominem attacks on those who think differently

Quote
Instead, the vast majority stayed, accepting a big loss this year and an even bigger loss come January, rather than a temporary, much smaller loss for a few weeks in June. We own the content. The agencies are nothing without us. But whatevs.

and again, you're mis-stating the case by presenting it as either /or rather than a large loss for everyone AND a slightly larger loss for boycotters

Well, today's a sad day for me. I just read in the Stock Coalition Facebook group that your work is featured in the Coalition Collection on Pond5. You argue against boycotting and haven't had much nice to say about the Coalition, but you stepped right up to take advantage of the deal they got with Pond5.

So now someone who thinks boycotting Shutterstock is useless reaps the reward of the hard work done by others who sacrificed their income and worked their butts off to try to make a difference.

From now out I'm looking out for number one and nobody else. Because what's the point if my work benefits someone like you? I gave up thousands of dollars in income so YOUR work could be featured while you continue making money on Shutterstock? Ehf that.

Wasn't it the case that your work would only get featured on Pond5 if they hadn't (re)activated their work on SS?
