I live in Switzerland and have never seen Alien Bees advertised or on sale. Are they a US product?
For a starter lighting kit I bought the Elincrom D-lite 4. Two flash heads adjustable in 1/10 stop increments (who uses it that fine?) with softboxes and all the gear, packing neatly into 2 cases. If you're in Europe I'd recommend this kit.

At present the 5D appears to be the 'perfect' instrument for microstock in terms of quality and price ...
If Nikon launch a '5D equivalent' I'd buy it immediately, but the prospect of that looks like being a year or more away.
Isn't the D3 Nikon's equivalent?

I also have the Sigma 150mm f2.8 and it's a cracking good lens. I hear the 105mm is possibly even better.

Hey, thanks for that!
I didn't realise that the buyout price went up according to the number of sales. I never accept their default of $350 when uploading and usually put something between $750 and $1000 depending on what I feel about the image. It's pretty subjective.
But I've just checked some of my best-selling images and DT's recommended price is now way above what I've suggested. Have to do some tweaking.
However ... I must say I don't understand the reasoning behind DT's strategy. Surely, the more times an image has been sold, the less likely a buyer wants exclusivity.
I mean, if dozens of people have bought an image before you, with the right to use it RF, surely that makes it less desirable, so the price should go down.

My top ten things: 1) Take more photos 2) Make sure they're better than last year's 3) Shoot more better photos 4) And even more 5) And then some 6) Develop my 'eye' and 7) Take yet more photos ... a whole barrowload Get that shutter finger working even harder 9) Process this heap of better photos 10) Submit them

Thanks for your feedback everyone. I know it was rather a 'How Long is a Piece of String' question, but I have almost no experience in this area. I've now got some useful links I can work on.
The main reason I want to set up the website is to showcase my work ... not sell anything through the site as such, but direct people to places where they can buy it. Of course, I've got photographs for sale with all the usual agencies, but I also write books. Have just published one of photographs and poems, and I have another on basic photography techniques being published in the UK in September. Thought I'd better get myself a web presence.

Having bought a domain name, I now want to create my own website. Has anyone got any tips, or advice? For example:
1) There are free templates available on the web. Are they worthwhile? Can anyone point to any good ones?
2) Or is it better to pay a designer and get a custom-made one?
3) Any guidelines on what designers ask to make a web site?
4) Any anything else you should watch out for in making a website?
All advice gratefully received. I'm a complete 'noob' in this area.
Thanks

Also all my building shots, even when its a small part of the building.
I don't see how they can reject photographs of buildings. That would cut their library enormously. Are you sure there wasn't a sign or something on the building? Anyway ... in most western countries (certainly in the UK and here in Switzerland) most photographs taken from public land need no property release. (I know ... there are exceptions like the London Eye).

I'd love to go with Smugmug but the problem for me (being in Europe) is that they won't accept payments by PayPal.
I e-mailed them and got a very quick and helpful response ...
... we can only accept payment via credit cards. While we would love to offer you different ways of paying and receiving money for your account, it's not possible at the moment. I've made sure that our Product Manager sees your vote for it. You're absolutely right about that only the banks profit from these kind of transactions, but then we're just a small team and only concentrate on a few projects at a time ...
I earn money from my photos in US dollars, then have to change it to Swiss francs, and convert it back to dollars to pay Smugmug's credit card bill. That seems crazy ... the bankers already have as many yachts as they can use.
Maybe if more people write in to them Smugmug will open up a Paypal option. That would be cool.

IMHO Lizard's second one, coupled with a touch of with black gradient added to the sky would work best. In the third one the colours appear to be too saturated and, as someone else had pointed out, the cloud's blown.

DT has added a new feature that will show you the keywords used for an image that was purchased.
What do you guys think about this?
What's wrong with me? The keywords that are shown as selling my images are all relevant ones. Seriously ... it's a great feature. Congratulations to DT

What happens if no one's smiling in the picture ...
... the sensor goes into an endless loop searching for the smile and burns itself out?

Great website! Clean and simple. Congratulations!
Did you do it yourself? Or have someone do it for you? Can you give a reference. I'm looking to develop my own site.

Vonkara -
Did they politely ask, or did they actually "demand" the RAW file as you wrote?
In a number of languages 'demand' (it's equivalent) doesn't have the same imperative force that it does in English. In French, for example, 'demander' simply means 'to ask'.

... select Magic Selection Brush Tool F ...

Forget it. It's near on impossible to get decent isolations with magic brush tool, or the lasso, or any automation. And you are very unlikely to get them past the inspectors if yopu do them this way. The only way to be sure (if you're going to use this method) is to hand draw the outline with the pen tool. But - depending on what you're isolating - it's a heck of a job.

Aw ... gee ... I'm still ploughing through mine. When I do it, I order them in Downloads/month and its the really slow sellers at the bottom of the list that I've still got to do, so I don't feel so much pressure to get them finished. How are you doing with Alamy's version of disambiguation?

« on: November 19, 2007, 02:31 »
Depends on how you're doing the isolation.
Are you using something like the magic wand or lasso? Can you give more details?

I'm pretty sure that they are interest-free.
These loans are to individuals who, for the most part, seem to be ready and willing to pay them back. By our standards they're tiny loans and, to us, any interest on them would be negligible. But to the recipients, having to pay interest on them could mean the difference between success and failure.
As as I'm concerned my 'interest' on a loan would be the knowledge that I'm helping someone set up an independent business and pull themselves out of poverty.

Thanks Tyler. A great concept. I worked for 20 years in Zambia and I know how far a little cash can go with putting someone on their feet in a business.
I'm signing up ...
