Newbie Discussion / Re: Who has had sales at Graphic Leftovers?
« on: February 18, 2010, 16:39 »
We've had a huge surge of illustrators and photographers uploading to GL in the past few weeks, which is awesome...but also could be one reason why some are seeing slower sales. The best thing to help boost the number of buyers on our site would be linking to GL from your own websites. Blog posts that link to your portfolio would definitely help out tremendously, especially in the eyes of search engines. We have a great referral program where you earn from sending buyers and sellers to the site, here are the details: http://graphicleftovers.com/referral_program/

Well, I'd actually love to see your agency outmatch all of the rest, as you're giving the very best deal for contributors. I love those $5,2 sales. I don't have a website or a blog though.

55 sales in total, but just 1 in February. Things are slowing down for me over there

« on: February 18, 2010, 05:05 »
I got one. I don't use the scrolling wheel or the buttons (not because they suck, just because I never took the time to grow accustomed to them). I use it for everything, drawing in Illustrator, browsing the web. In order to move the cursor across the screen I have to move my whole forearm whereas with a mouse I can do it with my wrist. That annoyed me in the beginning, but now I think it's perfect.

I don't know what size mine is, probably L, not the largest one on the market which I don't think I would like personally

With 10 initial images online I had 20 views in total (around July / August last year), then nothing. I added 20 images some months ago, and still no views in the months after August. Why is this? I'm sure you guys are getting regular views?

Oh, and no sales of course.

Btw Helix, I'm not here to determine which sites others should and shouldn't upload to. That's entirely not up to me to decide. This is just my opinion and the reason I don't endorse Vectorstock.

A total ripoff in my opinion.

How? It's a better deal than at SS. The pay grades are better, and you hit them faster than at SS. Who cares if it's PPD. You'll get more per sale from Vectorstock than SS over the long-run.

How can you sell at SS and call Vectorstock a ripoff?

Just as described above. With SS and other subscription models, the whole idea is that you're downloading A LOT of images, that's why they can give the "discount". If you want to compare SS to VS, you need to compare their PPD-models (at SS a single image would cost approximately $10-12 where at VS you can buy them for $1).

I wouldn't mind at all if I got 30 cents for a subscription sale at VS, but I'd rather have a kick in the face than receive 25-40 cents from a full vector image PPD sale. In comparison, these are the rates at other sites for the very same size and license:

StockXpert: $10
iStockPhoto: $15+
Dreamstime: $14+
Fotolia: $5+ (Too cheap in my opinion)

Vectorstock really stands out with its $1, and more people should be aware of this huge difference.

It DOES matter to me whether it was bought from a subscription or was a single image download. Why? Because no one would need a subscription in a world where you could just pick whatever you wanted for the same price per image. Subscription models are there to ensure that people buy more images than they would otherwise.

Yes, keep in mind the difference between a subscription model and a PPD-model. No other agencies offer PPD full editable vectors at such low rates. Also, all files are priced at $1, exceptions are extraordinarily rare.

A total ripoff in my opinion.

I've uploaded a few images there and stopped after realizing the low commission for a fully editable vector.  I now upload to another vector focused site that pays a fair rate and also offers raster versions of those images.

Graphic Leftovers ? ClipartOf ?

Thanks, I appreciate all your responses.

Specifically (c) and (e) stood out to me and could possibly be the solution to my problem, but unfortunately sjlocke might have a good point about (c).
Just sent a support ticket so I guess I'll see what Fotolia has to say about that matter.
Unfortunately Fotolia doesn't have an "Electronic items for resale" license as iStock, as a matter of fact they have just one, Vector Extended RF license, covering probably all sorts of stuff.

I wonder if an iPhone app is covered by "templates" ?

Perhaps I could refer to this paragraph from the "restrictions" section at Fotolia. Can anyone confirm?

Hi,

Yesterday I noticed that some emoticons I made are appearing in an iPhone app that is for sale at the Apple Appstore. I have a good feeling that all these were bought from Fotolia a couple of days ago, as they were all downloaded simultaneously and is available in that specific app I'm referring to, just the next day. I can say for sure that these emoticons, regardless of which agency the licenses was bought from, have been downloaded with standard licenses as none of them have ever been bought with an extended license.

Some details about the app: It allows you to attach an emoticon (all bought from microstock agencies apparently) to a status update, then post it on Facebook.
The reason why it really upsets me is that I'm currently working with another company who has invested a lot of money into getting me to draw custom emoticons for the very same kind of application (this app came first, by the way). For the ones that I'm having for sales on the agencies, I have personally given this company I work with my word (and a written contract) that allows them to use the emoticons in such a way that they can be reproduced or "posted" on Facebook by its customers.

I have a great interest in figuring out if the copycat app can actually use my images in this way with a simple standard license from Fotolia. Does any agency allow this? Not only do they now use some of the same content as the app I work for, they are also calling it the same.

I'm planning on contacting the developers, but need to know which approach I can allow myself to have to this matter. If a standard license doesn't allow this kind of usage, I'm going to ask them to remove the images from their app. If, however, it turns out to be perfectly legit, I have to try to sort this out with them in another way.

I think the information can be found here: http://eu.fotolia.com/Info/Agreements#3. , but I simply don't know how to interpret this lawyer language as English isn't my native language, and I'm having a hard time trying to figure out what terms such as "resale" actually covers.

Thanks for your help

Thomas

I don't like them. They price almost everything at 1$ and at 25% commission that's 25 cents earning! That's less than a sub. And it's a full size-editable vector file on-demand.Major rip-off. They also have some weird requirements for the thumbnail jpeg.

+1

Here are some initial thoughts on the site.

Ups:

- 50% commission
- Vectors seem to be reasonably priced
- Nice looking site. I really like it!

Downs:

- When uploading vectors, the preview must be no bigger than 270x270. My previews are always 9mp+, and certainly not going through the hassle just for uploading at StockXpose.
- No keyword limit
- Ugly banner ad in the left side of the screen
- No FAQ ? Seriously, I need to know exactly how my images are priced, I need to know whether I'm going to receive 50% of the credits spent or the USD spent, all those sorts of things need to be perfectly clear to begin with.
- Couldn't find any information about where you are based, names etc. - not even an e-mail address! That always looks suspicious to me, I can't help it.

Couldn't it be that we are no longer getting JUI sub sales? I usually get 10+ every weekday, but today and yesterday I haven't had one. Only StockXpert subs and StockXpert PPD's

Got 11 images with them and one nice 14,97 EUR sale. I don't expect to get a payout though. Horrible uploading process and I don't fully understand the site (green light, red light, even green and red combined?, ed. tip, recommendation). Also weird rejection reason for my batch of 20-30 images. More than half of them were rejected with the reasons: "please smoothen borders. thank you" and "Please delete the white borders on each side of the image. Thank you". I didn't have those rejected at any other place, even at iStockPhoto they got accepted. They are all .EPS files and there are no white borders on the previews if that's what they mean

Edit: No they wouldn't be EPS as they don't accept them over there as far as I remember. So they are referring to the JPEG for sure.

Adobe Stock / Re: OFFICIALLY NO ITIN REQUIRED WITH FOTOLIA!!!!!!

I wonder if it's only the EU fotolia that has limited access to forums??

Probably something like that.

Using a proxy to hide your IP won't help, I just tried. It's most likely a matter of where your account is registered. Mine is set up with the European website as well - automatically.

This is fantastic news.

But I don't get why some of us are only allowed to see the "Cafe du Monde" forum. I can't access, for instance, "the legal forum" that everyone keeps talking about. Even direct URL's will redirect me to the main forum page. Is this a matter of where in the world you are located? I'm in Denmark

Warren,

Yes they certainly do. I haven't submitted the W8-BEN (well I did earlier this morning, so it's in the pending queue now). I've had 8 sales since January 1st - none of them are from U.S. buyers according to the new options from the statistics page. Yet all of them include 28% withholdings (why not 30% by the way?).

In fact U.S. sales make up just 13,9% of my all time earnings there, so I'm not even sure if it will be worth the hassle for me to obtain an ITIN, had the withholdings only affected US sales.

I do want to complain, but feel powerless. Seriously. This is a joke.

I didn't fill out the online W-8 BEN form from their tax center yet, and that's probably the reason why all of my sales are getting deducted from. I'm figuring if I filled it out (without the ITIN) only U.S. sales would be affected.

No. I filled the form out without an ITIN number too. It was accepted but in the acceptance email it was clearly stated that without ITIN number, the tax would be applied.

Tax will be applied, yes, but on ALL sales or on U.S. sales only? If on all sales, isn't that illegal? And in this case what would be the point of filling it out?

I'm wondering, if I fill it out now without the ITIN, can I get back later when I have it and re-submit it with the ITIN?

All of my sales since January 1st have been arranged for a 30% deduction. There is no way all of these could have come from the US.

I believed the deduction would only affect PAYMENTS, not each sale. I don't expect them to reimburse the money (MY money), and generally I am very, very, very disappointed with the way they are handling this situation. They expect people to acquire an ITIN on such short notice, and don't even bother to give us the appropriate means to do so. . How am I supposed to apply for an ITIN without a signed letter, that is NOT JUST an e-mail?
