I really don't mean to be rude, but:  Don't you read the IS forum to keep informed on what's going on?

I don't think you are being rude, and I don't know about bobkeenan, but I for one do NOT spend a lot of time in the istock forum and I never thought that sites should use the forums as a place for important announcements. Emails to contributors or a big red notice box on the home page would be way better, imho.
They post this information on "Uploads" page, which makes perfect sense since that's where you can upload your images.

I sure as he'll wouldn't want to be spammed with email everytime they make a minor change to the site or have brief downtime. It's easier to pop into the forums or announcement pages when I think something might be going on.

Only unsolicited e-mails are spam.  Contributors could choose to be in such mailing list or not.

Additional ways to keep contributors informed could reduce the amount of complaints and endless panic threads in the forum.

It would not be just way better, it would be the right thing to do!  It would probably avoid lot's of complaints from contributors and endless threads in the forum.

But as such attention does not exist yet, the only thing we can do is checking the forum.

Just making sure its not just me.  I have had some images uploaded to Istock for a couple days that i want to finish editing categories, keywords, etc.  And they say that this is not available now?  And that's be a few days now.

Do others get that too?

I really don't mean to be rude, but:  Don't you read the IS forum to keep informed on what's going on?

There's truth in all of the answers posted here, from healthy skepticism
... everybody can push a button on a cam, illustrators' talents are scarce.
Come on!!!  >:(

Pushing a button on a camera doesn't make anyone a photographer!   Knowledge and talent are necessary to be a good photographer and have success.

I want to increase my efforts and in the next 12 months make it a sort of minimum UK wage (1000 a month)

I am entering into Microstock in 2010. I have read various articles about the subject and the subject is "Can someone entering into Microstock in 2010 have much success?"

Is it worth the effort, is it worth my effort for the next 12 months?

If you are already a professional photographer, have really GREAT and ORIGINAL images, then perhaps you may reach your goal.  Otherwise, forget about it because the answer is definitely NO.

Nothing's changing.  You just have your options off in the advanced search.
Wow, haha... took me two years to figure out this exists!

Now you know!  ;)

Yeah, the biggest problem right now with the advanced search is that your settings can get reset without you doing anything. Sometimes switching between different kinds of searches (keyword to lightbox) can trigger it. Not every time, but sometimes.

I'm not even doing searches. All I have been doing is going to my own portfolio. As if just moving around the site is changing the settings. I just did a search for corn and it came up with 0 results.

The settings at Advanced Search does not only show/hide file details in the results of a search, but also what you see in your portfolio.

It's has happened to me sometimes that my settings got reset without me doing anything.  Just as explained above. When that happens I just go to Advanced Search again, choose my options, and save my settings.  That's all.

They made those contacts while they were bosses of StockXpert. Those contacts are their contacts, not Getty's.

No, they would be the contacts of the company.

Yes, I know. But still... who knows. It's OK to contact potential buyers in one or another way, right? Sending email is one way to do it.

No, it's not ok.  That would be spamming.

New Sites - General / Re: Know anything about Dreamstock?
« on: June 18, 2010, 23:48 »
I wonder how tight the fine print is, as even I could make money downloading an unlimited number of my own images for 10 cents a pop. (or maybe we could just make a microstockgroup account that buys one of each of our images every day. I'm sure I have 100 crap rejects somewhere on my hard drive...

This is against our terms of service. While we welcome genuine downloads, we have strict policies against those who register accounts to artificially inflate download numbers for their associate photographers. Accounts/photographers involved in this scheme will be removed from our service.

If you have any other questions, feel free to visit us, we're generally on live chat.  ;D

Hmmm...

They already have an excuse not to pay commisions:  "Sorry, we regret to inform you that sale for file ###### was not genuine"

The only way the can make this model work, is by taking advantage of naive and desperate contributors and paying them practically nothing.

it is INSANE

It's good to know this time you are not cheerleading a new subscription plan agency!

This kind of new "agencies" are born because there are photographers willing to accept anything. You see.

It's a scheduled maintenance.   No reason to worry!

Thanks again cuppacoffee.  Then I'll have to contact Dreamstime.  I disabled my images a couple of days ago, but the thumbnails are still there.  :(

Just make sure you don't re-enable them by mistake...Their six month hold on the image will kick back in.  I seem to recall that it took a couple of days for the thumbnails of my images to no longer show up in searches.  The key is that they aren't available for sales.

Be sure to also check out imagetrail.  And also make sure to check Google Images as well.  I found a couple of sites that had my images that I needed to get taken care of before taking the plunge.
Thanks jsolie.

I have just checked again, and the thumbnails are gone!  :)  It took 3 days.

364
Once you disable them they are immediately gone from your online portfolio, they move to a "disabled" area and sit there until DT deletes them permanently. No one can see them as soon as you hit the Disable button. I believe they leave them in this holding tank in case you decide to re enable them.

Thanks again cuppacoffee.  Then I'll have to contact Dreamstime.  I disabled my images a couple of days ago, but the thumbnails are still there.  :(

Sorry everyone.  This is the correct post:

According to Achilles via a thread on their forums - disabled files are automatically deleted every few months (regularly between 6-12). If you have older files, they might've been missed by the scripts or maybe something else happened (e.g. you reactivated them at some point). You should email support a list of IDs.

Thanks cuppacoffee.  I was rather asking about the regular thumbnails displaying in the portfolio. Those anyone can see.    Once you disable an image, how long does it take for its thumbnail in the portfolio to disappear?

366
EDIT: Sorry, I typed an incorrect post  here.

Does anyone know how long it takes for thumbnails (at Dreamstime) to disappear once the images have been disabled ?

There's been rejections in the past for having images on Flickr, photo.net, etc.  I don't want to be one of them.

So, I've taken my time to have EVERYTHING removed.  I don't want to be rejected and have to wait 3 months to apply again.

I am applying for IS exclusivity this weekend.

I have been preparing for this since last December. But even so, this week I have been checking and rechecking that all my other portfolios have been closed, that no agency or partner site is even displaying my images.   It took me months and many e-mails to have my images deleted from some FT's partner sites like the chinese one (Tweimei).

All I can tell you is:  Make sure all your portfolios have been closed and no agency is still displaying your images.

Good luck!  :)

372
WHAT?  OMG!  I don't even understand why am I laughing.  Are they stupid or what?

1. It is going to be very difficult for new folks to get into istock nowadays. Getty/IS is on the path of changing the company back into high-end, high-priced RM-type of business, with exclusive members only, and what was once acceptable will not be now. If I were starting all over with IS today, I doubt that any, maybe a few, of my photos would even be accepted.

2. You are coming into the IS game when there are millions and millions of images, and hundreds of thousands contributors. There are likely hundreds of similar photos already in the database similar, some better, some worse, than your images. Basically what they mean is "we don't need any more of these".

All of the above is just my opinion, and maybe other, more experienced photogs here can be more specific about your composition. Hope my comments give you some perspective, at least.

I completely agree.  This seems to be the path IS is taking.

... Not one single case of a reported watermarked image has ever turned into a sale.

... I would love to sue BBC for using a watermarked image they got at StockXpert, who never took any action.

I remember the watermarked image used by BBC.  It's amazing StockXpert did nothing. >:(

In case of companies using watermarked images, there is no doubt that the image has been stolen.   If the agency does nothing, if the company does not remove the image, and if legal action is not financially viable, I would definitely expose the case everywhere I can.

375
...Let's say I design a website that uses 6 images.  Do I need to provide proof now to 6 photographers?

So some of us are contributing to 10, 15 or more agencies. So if we have reason to believe that a company is reproducing/reselling our images we are supposed to write an email to all agencies trying to figure out who sold it to that company (sometimes the agencies don't even know because they sold it to the designer and not the actual company) or me contacting the company directly, verifying if they acquired the appropriate license for it.

Here my suggestion if you're really worried about defending your copyrights, stop uploading to 10 or more agencies.

Good point.  Defending copyrights and working with many different agencies is practically impossible.
