Apart from the CA the Tokina 11-16 2.8 would be the winner I would say, reading the reviews. I have the Tokina 12-24 and you can use it for stock if you take photos in the right light. But I had photos with the CA so strong it was not correctable in a fast way. Tokina lenses seem to have quite a problem with the CA especially the 12-24.

We've been looking at the Compete/Alexa numbers with respect to iStock. If you do the same for Stockxpert and Photos.com, you will find that Stockxpert gets much more traffic than Photos.com.
In July, StockXpert had 93,000 unique visitors while Photos.com had only 58,000. By comparison, Dreamstime alone had 344,000.
Based on these numbers, the maximum amount of sales we could expect from Photos.com initially would be 1/3 that of our regular StockXpert sales. In addition, not every Photos.com subscriber is going to be a Plus subscriber, so that cuts into it significantly more. I'm going to guess 1 out of every 10 sales will come from Photos.com. If they can grow the traffic there, then it could become a significant increase for us.
Dan, but Photos.com, is not so much a site were a lot of photographers hang arround, contrary to stockxpert or dreamstime. As I understood the old content from photos.com was entirely owned by jupiterimages. So photographers probably very seldom access this site. If there are more addicted photographers like me who check their sales daily at stockxpert I think that probably generates a lot of traffic. Good to hear, there are already a few sales.

Yes size matters! I have many large downloads and also quite a few downloads with XL and XXL where available. But it also depends on the subject you are selling. If I would just upload the minimum size required to every site, I guess I would loose somewhat around 30-50% of my income.

Got my first as well. Euro 0,5 for small size.

You might be right, but it seems there is something more which plays into it as well apart from the number of similar keywords which seems to be the strongest factor, but I can't really pinpoint it.

Here is what I know about the search engines
Fotolia changes too often. But order of keywords plays into it Once it was number of keywords, now I do not know anymore
Dreamstime: as just mentioned number of similar keyword in title, description and keywords
iStock: -Strong on age. -Popularity dls/time -Size -exclusivity? Might be connected to the longer review time fornon-exclusives.
Stockxpert -Very strong on dls and views -Age plays a factor as well
Shutterstock - very strong popularity dls/time - Age: buyers looking very strong for new images. If your imagefails there, it might never be popular
Most stable is Dreamstime and Stockxpert. No change there for along time.

It seems most of the beach images of the first page are very strong sellers, probably that plays into it as well. For other images it then might be hard to push them out of the first page. But who knows, definately there are other factors as well.

« on: August 20, 2008, 13:21 »
Dreamstime relevancy is partly sorted by how often a similar keywords is in the title, description and keywords. So in this case you have 3 times beach. And maybe the collections which have beach in the title also play into it. I guess there are other factors as well, but it seems the amount of the same keyword is the strongest factor. The relevancy search updates regulary. Search for isolated tree. There are 6 images which I have uploaded within the last three weeks on the first page

Agree, if you go for the money you should go with all the big agencies. If you want to go exclusive with one I would choose iStock not DT.

Nice images Cyril! I have been on Alamy for a year with about now 68 images. I had 2 sales in the first three month. Since then nothing... Probably you need a couple of thousand images to have regular sales there.

I think I have somewhere read (I do not know where) resale of itemes with our photos on it through ebay or cafepress is prohibited under the EULA of Photos.com. Is this covered by the prohibition of selling Physical Goods (for resale through on-demand services)? Can you clarify Steve?

@ CPphoto, we do not know at which price they will sell our images, do we? Or do you refer to record low price to selling Els?
It is unfortunate that the StockXpert subscription opt in/opt out is linked to the photos.com subscription but at least they offered an opt out.
They apparently realized they made a mistake and said sorry. You will not find a lot of agencies who will apologize for past mistakes. Compared to Fotolia for example they let people speak up their mind on their forum and apologized for what they did and gave contributors the chance to opt out of this deal altogether. For this I am thankful and I will continue to submit to StockXpert and even if I am not a fan of StockXpert subscription I will also try out the subscription option for at least a short time which is linked to the Jupiter deals. Then I will reevaluate again.

Thats right, Els at StockXpert and DT are really rare. IS changed their setup, so it is very easy for a buyer to see the EL option now. Prior to the change at iS I had only a very small amount of El's. After the change El's at IS picked up.

Lightroom is much more than that. Lightroom gives you a lot of speed, if you want to edit large amounts of photos. For basic adjustments, whitebalance, exposure, saturation, vignetting, adjusting levelsand so on it is perfect. You can adjust many files at ones in Raw. It is also very nice and fast way to add meta data. Of course you can also add Metadata to several files at ones.
Another thing is the nondestructive editing. You can always reset to the original file. Lightroom has made editing for me much easier and faster. It is my most used software. If I need more than basic adjustments I go to photoshop. I highly recommend it. Definately try out the trial version.

Done! Here is mine: http://www.stockxpert.com/browse.phtml?f=view&id=17383431Here I tried out Nik effex color filter software. Its great, but probably in general more attractive for other kind of photography not so much for stock photography. I bet that image gets rejected at iStock

Jsnover.
1. I know that we do get $28 at SS. Then make it $28 and it will be 28%. I still think the Xl and XXL sales can make up for it.
2. The pricing is actually $49 - $299. Of course they can buy it cheaper elsewhere, if they find it. But why do so many people still buy royalty-free at traditional agencies?
3. $0.3 commission is not that good, I agree and I wish it would be higher, but at least they have taken the step to limit it to roughly 4,3 MP.
The photos.com model has advantages for some customers, but not for everyone. Look at the high prices for the XL and XXL sizes. I am also pretty certain most bigger customers would prefer to stick to one agency.
I am actually looking forward how it will turn out. If it however seems to turn out negatively....

Interesting point Helix.
I just did a calculation. From my last 5000 dls at SS I had about 15 Els. Which is quite good I suppose. Lets assume the Photos.com royalty for StockXpert contributers. 5000 X 0.3 = $1500 Lets assume $20 for an EL: 15X 20 = $300 So I would loose 20% income. If however the XL and XXL sales would provide the 20% which I am loosing which could be quite possible than I am not really loosing income. However I do think the licensing terms are unfortunate but we will not see a lot of SS customers, fotolia or DT customers switching to a new site. I believe most of the customers are not so familar with the sites as we are anyway.

I am not an optic expert, but here is one http://www.pictureline.com/newsletter/2004/july/purplefringe.htmlThere are also some tips to avoid it. As mentioned in the article it happens most often in areas of high contrast. But actually I never had a lens on my camera a longer time where I not experienced it even with my L-lens. Only on a 135L I do not remember it to have it seen. But I had this fantastic lens just one day. As in the article mentioned it seems the wider the lens the more it happens. The Tokina is just very extreme with purple fringe.

Can you give us some more information about photos.com customers. Are there as many as with stockxpert? Are there any calculations how much more image stockxpert might license through photos.com? Thanks Steve!

I have the tokina 12-24 and also shot with the Canon EFS 10-22 and made a comparison. Purple fringe can be really bad on the Tokina. As far as I remember at the 20 mm end the canon was better and at the 12 mm end the tokina was better regarding sharpness, or maybe it was the other way arround. However for me they seemed to be almost similar in image quality. But I was also a bit disappointed. The Tokina got very good reviews to be pretty sharp. But actually it was not that sharp. I also have a 24-70 L lens which is at the 24 end much sharper than the Tokina at 24. The Tokina has by the way the highest rating on fredmiranda between the sigma 12-24 and Canon 10-22. I have not seen a very sharp wide angle lens yet. But as already mentioned the 14mm 2.8L II lens should be according to reviews fantastic. The older version though has not such a good rating.

I don't. I just upload to the agencies I want them on. Most get accepted, some rejected. If I have some unique images which might sell very well and are rejected for a technical reason, I resubmit normaly right away after I tried to fix the issue. So I do not really see a need for me to track them.

Personally I think that most of them are really great images and I think Artist of the week is well deserved.
