Shutterstock.com / Re: Is there a problem on Shutterstock today?
« on: January 17, 2018, 08:27 »
Shutterstock is stirring their algorithms to spread sales out among contributors.  The idea being to continue to take in money from sales, but not have to pay out as much, because no one contributor will make enough for a payout for a long time.

You know what, that makes no sense at all. They can't do anything with the money they owe except hold it. How do they gain from taking in money, but not paying out as much? Didn't they lower the payment threshold.

Cheer up Yada, you made your spot with hard work! We all have an opinion, that is the great thing about this forum. Everyone has different ideas on what goes on "behind the curtain" but we are all in this race together. (I hope I don't come off as a cry baby from your earlier post, not sure if that was aimed at me?)

Not you, you know I more often agree with you. Just sometimes there has to be a message to reply to that has some of the info or the general subject. We all make where we are with our work, good or bad. I don't make fun of others or knock them down for being newer or what they do. Some here tend to be arrogant * pretenders, that's a different problem. I don't do what you do and can't tell you what to sell, just that I do my own as I see.

Well I think everyone can understand that for example if somebody made $ 4000 a month and then suddenly over night, literary  over night fell to $ 2000 a month without any reason what so ever, same search same everything. Then something is badly WRONG!! doesnt take an Einstein to work that out. Then you here of tons of people not just here but everywhere experiencing the same thing and over night, well, well??

There are some private forums with hundereds of photographers, full-timers and yes!  exactly the same thing.

NOW!  waiting for a Ghost-buster and I think I know which one! haha! ;D

Send me a link to these 100 photographer forums that have lost half their sales overnight. How many times can we do that before the number is nothing. If you make the same loss for five years, there's nothing left. Math isn't your subject is it? Asking for facts or the truth is not ghostbusters it's BS Busters.

For wiw I am not seeing a difference. Yes sales are slow, but with me it doesnt really pick up before the 15th in a New Year. Also no change in  the type of files that are selling.

That what I've said. My sales don't change with these strange and wild changes to the search. I don't deny that the search changes or that it makes no sense. Not just SS but IS as well. I just don't see the lost sales that seem to be harming some others. But according to BelieveInStock I don't matter and no one else does if they don't make $5000 a month? Maybe Leaf should shut down the forum or have registration for only the top people like BelieveInStock, who are extra special. The rest of us aren't allowed to have an opinion because we aren't good enough.

yes, actually when I clicked the link on the webpage they offer only 15 usd for 1000 downloads.

Which is worse than $50. 1.5c per download? If that's true we're at the bottom.

And they also know that individual microstock photographers have no bargaining power.

Right, Jon got in early and all the suckers uploaded for 25c. Now the same suckers complain that we get paid nothing. You are right because driving the value and prices down to nothing is the work of the so called professionals who sold their souls to SS for some coin. You are right, we have no bargaining power because photos, illustrations and video, the Internet, digital advances and the market have become over saturated by desperate people, willing to work for almost nothing.

We aren't artists in Microstock any more, we are producers of a commodity. Accept that position or leave. This over supply will not get better and earnings will continue to fall for individuals. Jon will keep getting richer, but what person needs a billion dollars to live comfortably? My answer of course is a raise for us to thank us for making him a billionaire.

Sorry YadaYadaYada but if it took you long time to get over $10000, then you cant compare your experience with people who used to earn this in 2 months (on Shutterstock only of course) or sometimes monthly for a few years. This is my bread and butter, not an amateur weekend activity and thats why it hurts.

Are you in the .38 club yada?

Yes but barely, took a long time and my ten best put me over, the thousands rest aren't very good income. That might explain some of the increase in earnings, just for moving up last year. Good question, I don't know if that's what did it.

"Old images don't sell like they used to"

This is the exact opposite for me. ONLY the old images sell (and well)! No point on uploading new work anymore. New work never sees the light of day sadly ...

Also a good point, we all find differences. My all time best is an old one, some new are in the top ten.  :)

I should have expected that, especially when some of the biggest cry babies get 50 downloads a year. Some of the whiners will never make $10,000 on SS because they have no idea what the market is about. And like some old timers who used to say, you can't answer unless you have 2,000 accepted photos, but they have 2,008 photos years later. You don't get to set the level and standards to ridicule me for making the highest level at SS when I'd bet that most of the new people and complainers about their place in the popular isn't what they deserve.

I worked, I made my spot, now you are trying to knock that down. Fine then do the same for everyone who only makes 25, 33 and 36 cents, all the people on this forum in those levels. Or is your insulting arrogance only for someone who disagrees with you? Tell all those people who aren't professional enough for you that they can't have an opinion or compare to your experience. Y9ou are so wonderful I should bow to you, whoever you are?

1 thousand downloads then they will give you $50, what a stinky deal, you get 5 cents a download instead of the worst sites where you will get 25 cents SS, 28 cents IS, 33 cents FT. or more. 200 downloads gets you more than that $50 anywhere else.

Same thing here. I think I'm going to delete my BS account. I was getting $100 then $50 and now it is $30 per month.

Other than this is the 123RF section, you do have my sympathy. BS, DP or 123 these low middle places keep going down. Not for me, I just quit. Some will say at least you make something, which is more than I do. I can't disagree. My only question is, asking myself, how much do I want to work for some peanuts and spare change? Remember it costs nothing to just leave the work you already did on these sites and up for sale. If that's something of value, just stop working for the low earning sites and work harder on where you feel you make the most. Take the income scraps you already worked so hard to get.

So true! I'm waiting for the "anti-cap-earning" peeps to get angry at us for such talk ...

Yes conspiracy writers in this thread wouldn't want to hear the truth when the false claims they have invented is so much more interesting. Now name calling from some and preemptive attacks on anyone who doubts or disagrees will be the way to silence rational opposing discussion. Good work conspiracy people, make up caps, self validate and then shut down the opposing views. Make your own version of truth. Pravda my friends. And who's angry? Sounds like the people claiming caps and earning control are the angry ones here.  :) Please keep shouting down the truth and the facts, that keeps the forum active.

I'm not angry because I'm not capped, my earnings continue to grow each year, must be that they like me and are punishing the people who complain here? First it was SS now it's FT and I would have said all along that IS would be more likely to play these kind of stab in the back money games. Like featuring indie and thinkstock over exclusive, imagine how much money that would save? Flat 15% no one makes their RC level, IS saves all kinds of money.

maybe I'm wrong but i remember u not long ago always complain gin of falling down earning. maybe I'm wrong.

Why do you have three or more accounts here? So you can answer your own claims and make it look like someone else believes your constant BS?

Some months have been lower than past, but every year I have made gains in income. I didn't take all my best images off SS and stop uploading like you claim you did, then come here and whine about sales being down, earnings down and capping. I uploaded more and new ideas and I'm making more.

Old images don't sell like they used to, I'm pretty confident that's universal. I think the word is competition. Better, more and stronger. I don't expect to make more or advance but doing less and sitting on my ass complaining, so I work harder. That's why I earn more every year.

YadaYadaYada  very well stated....great info..thanks

Hope some of that was helpful. BTW I don't know, I won't predict, I just think this is interesting. I don't claim to fully understand Cryptocurrency either, just that it's not as cryptic as crypto sounds. It's easier to trade, once I got an account, than stocks. Money transfers and the commissions are minimal, based on the transaction not the size, if I read my transaction logs right.

The stock market boom in the roaring 20s
The tech boom in the 1990s,
The housing boom in the 2000s,
Microstock sorry folks it was a boom,
And now the booming cryptocurrency market.

What's next? A wild ride up and down and finally if anyone pays attention to booms and history, a big bust. But we have stocks, tech, housing, micro, and there will be survivors of this boom who will become stable businesses and part of the global economy.

Here's what's good, in my view, about KodakCoin and KodakOne and all the hoopla. They have a trusted name and trusted partner in WENN. The stock will rise, the coin should take off like all the rest and eventually reach stability. Here's what I question. The claims and ability to protect our work and fees for registration of this questionable promise. Add to that they refer to licensing which is vague? Are they going to license or is this just or our own licensing? Many questions and not nearly enough answers.

I'm positive because this all looks exciting and interesting. I'm cautious about great expectations because there's so much hype and many vague promises included.

Here is my thoughts. I think Kodak has a brand that has not been lost just out of work. Their brand name is still top shelf.  With this new block chain currency people will react with excitement. All the stock agencies will pay Kodak a finders commission to have their images policed. When Kodak finds infringements on images the stock companies and image owners will get a bitcoin type payment. Photographers and Stock Agencies will like the payment in this type of bit coin because in principal value may increase in time. Kodak Stock should go to the moon with this new business model..Just watch....you heard it first here. W.Scott McGill
The value of the coin may also decrease in time also it doesn't matter what photographers and agencies like its a buyers market. Unless a benefit to customers can be identified it will fail. I can follow the logic of the Blockchain for registering the images....buy why payment in cryptocurrency....an infringement not only has to be found it has to be enforced...that's the hard part.

Seems some people here didn't follow the links or read before they posted the replies. https://www.kodak.com/US/en/corp/Press_center/KODAK_and_WENN_Digital_Partner_to_Launch_Major_Blockchain_Initiative_and_Cryptocurrency/default.htm

License the work within the system, enforce copyright, for agencies and photographers, WENN will get a percentage of the collections in other words, a percentage of what they find, before they pay us. Photographers who use KODAKOne will be able to register and license their work in its secure ledger.  License? New agency or we license? I don't know.

Registration for images, I share some of the same doubts, but if they do the work, finding infringement and send me money, what's the problem and all the negativity? I'd assume we must first pay to register our work and then hope they find something. Bit of a risk. I'm also questioning if that registration will be effective or just be a way for Kodak to make money on a worthless product that promises what it can't deliver.

Crypto currency has no borders. You can get coin and convert coin anywhere on the planet. You convert it into your local currency, it's that easy. We won't be getting paid worthless, every changing, bits of a specific use only coinage. It's universal, unlike dollars, Euro, Pounds, rubles, Yen, Dracma, Rands, Real, or worse drachma? Countries with runaway inflation can make your money worthless overnight.

Sure the value of the KodakCoin will fluctuate, but it will also be the payment for work as well as the payment to us, no exchange rates, one universal coin for all the transactions. Then we turn it into whatever we want. I'll take US dollars.

Until we see the whole plan and how it might work, or not, I'd say this is someone trying to make a move that could help us. All the naysayers, have your mind made up, continue to be hopeless and complain how our work is stolen, resold or given away for free. Complain about the fees for converting our earnings from dollars or euros into our own currency. The decision to participate is voluntary.

Makes me wonder if some of the current agencies will participate and switch to crypto coin over fiat money. The exchange rates and paying us in US dollars is a problem and expense for them as well. Imagine an agency in Africa, China or Russia. They pay in universal crypto currency,  we exchange that for whatever we want. Small fees for transactions, unlike PayPal and the others.

390
You get paid with KodakCoin you convert it to your local currency, you don't sit on it.

How do I convert it? Obvioulsy it's new, so nobody knows exactly... but say they were paying in Bitcoin instead.

Doesn't matter what they pay, the coin exchanges let you convert to any other coin, or take out the value is your local currency. You will have a Coinbase https://www.coinbase.com/dashboard account for example. That's connected to your bank account. You remove the value to your local currency at the exchange rate for the coin.

Here's what the market looks like. I can guess that 90% of these will eventually be nothing or flat value. Just like everything else, the top coins will get the market. Bitcoin is losing shares to the new entries right now, but should last it out as one of the survivors. https://coinmarketcap.com/

If I have one kind of coin I can exchange it for any other kind of coin. There is a fee for every transaction, that's where the mining comes in.

391
When Kodak finds infringements on images the stock companies and image owners will get a bitcoin type payment.

Why would Kodak pay me money if they find an image being used which hasn't been licensed properly? How would they benefit from paying out all this money?

Photographers and Stock Agencies will like the payment in this type of bit coin because in principal value may increase in time.

I won't like the payment in this type of bit coin, as in principle, the value may also decrease in time. I'll stick with cash for now.

The dollar, Yen, Ruble, and any conventional currency else can increase of decrease in time. You get paid with KodakCoin you convert it to your local currency, you don't sit on it. Unless you want to play the market and hold coin. Payment is payment, what you do with it after that is your choice. Kind of like getting credits on a stock site and when you cash out you get money.

https://kodakcoin.com/ KodakOne site I don't think this was added yet? I don't know if Kodak will own this or hire KOne to run the licensing part using the Kodak name, and KodakCoin. Very confusing. WENN digital will manage the coin under the Kodak name.

I reported an infringement time ago, for one of my image beeing copycated. They did Nothing.

Did they use your image or copy an idea? If it was concept there's nothing to do, if your original work was used to make the new, follow the three and list numbers and why. If it's just similar you can't stop that.

Quite incredible actually but yesterday I had 6 EL's at Istock of all places! by the look of it its the same buyer!... wonders never cease. :)
Where do you get notification of ELs in real time? General suspicion (unconfirmed/undenied by admin) was that ELs have gone, but maybe the inexplicably big sales we sometimes get are 'what used to be ELs', but with no notification as such.

The buyer later got in touch with me via my email and confirmed he bought 4 but he must have ended up buying 6 because they are quite similar and judging by what he told me he paid it can only have been EL's!
Oh, right!

I know you try but all we can do is point out the impossible and hope that others don't believe the troll. IS Els in real time, buyers who have direct contact, soon after. The incredible Derek who does the impossible, nearly every day.  ;D Might be possible but I've never had a buyer contact me after any IS sale? And never had ELs in real time since ESP. Unbelievable is literal from some people.

396
So we can all stop repeating the factoid that you must be the author to complain at ShutterStock. DMCA and other places may be different. I'd say if any Microstock site comes back and says we must be the author, then they don't care and are deflecting any efforts to protect us.

We only say that because Shutterstock keeps telling us that.  Tigershoot, let us know if Shutterstock responds to your report, what they say.

Exactly. The last time I tried to report something, I was told you had to be the content owner, which frankly makes sense. In the end, I don't think it matters much. Doesn't seem like they do much to the thieves one way or the other. Which reminds me, I need to go check on that foundstock fiasco.

I got the exact reply that Pete did. Maybe the personal answer is different from [email protected] or they don't know what the other department is telling us. My answer came from a different division and after I wrote, the portfolio of the last thief disappeared in hours. I wasn't the one who's pictures were being flipped, copied or altered and uploaded.

Appallingly bad. I absolutely have no idea why they rank third here. Totally inaccurate.

Sales every blue moon but everyday those annoying "images with no downloads" emails keep coming.
Third? seventh clusters of sales but 7th about right....

No answer from Herg. DT holds 7th if you ignore Clipartof, canva, self, Getty, eye, dissolve, story, and mostphoto. In which case DT would be 16 on the list. I'm not impressed with that 7.2 at all.

If I did all that much with music sales like he says, I would leave micro photo and concentrate where I make the best money.

"... IS better in December ..."? How you know that?

They show me 'Downloads Year To Date' number, and it's growing from day to day

Where? All I see on ESP is November.

Account Management > Profile.
However, as it has reset for 2018, you probably won't have (m)any downloads showing there. (I'm still on 0)
NB, dytd only shows the number of dls, not the $$ or the actual files which sold.

Oh thank you, so I need to check every day and look at that number to see if I got a download today? I just wondered how people saw ahead of the report, I don't mind waiting until they are posted, I mean I do because I'm looking at Nov. which is posted in Dec. but I don't mind that much because all I'd see is a number of downloads.
