Adobe Stock / Re: Fotolia is cutting royalties for 2010 and will increase prices« on: December 18, 2009, 03:26 »Vector artist here. I recalculated my November numbers using the new prices. It was a 4% increase with the new prices, but I can understand people's anger towards this. The emotional side of me wants to get the torches and pitchforks out of the closet, but the rational side says it's a raise. I definitely don't think this move will sway anyone eyeing iStock exclusivity to stay at Fotolia. Vector artists also sell rasters. I did the same calculation as cthoman and lost 1 cent. Not taken into consideration that PPD sales will probably decrease or Fotolia will take away my share from other sites through marketing 378

I finally reached Silver after a year of hard work. I'm being rewarded with a 1% reduction from bronze.
And I'm a vector contributor, so most likely I won't benefit much from the increased prices of rasters. 380

I requested a payout 10 days ago as well, but it's still pending and I don't have high hopes of receiving the payment without submitting the W8-BEN.
I'm NOT letting them take 30% of my US income as the treaty says 0% for my country, but I have NO CLUE how to apply for an ITIN. I was hoping that Fotolia would find out for themself that this ITIN is not necessary, but I probably have to go through all the hassle of getting an ITIN anyways. How do I proceed? Anyone who reads this, how are YOU dealing with this as an individual? In my opinion, this is a major problem that is not being discussed enough. 381
New Sites - General / ClipDealer, anyone?« on: November 25, 2009, 07:32 »
Has anyone heard of a microstock site called ClipDealer?
I'm interested because I consider contributing my vector illustrations to them, but doing a quick search I don't think they have been discussed in here before. They seem to have an okay deal: 50% and vector prices at 9,9 EUR And no, I am not associated with them in any way, just curious; Any sales, any views? Worth giving a shot? Thanks! 382
General Stock Discussion / Re: Artist Rising, Photographers Direct and Fine Art America« on: November 25, 2009, 07:14 »
From PhotographersDirect's page arguing against microstock:
UPDATE August 2009 There has been a lot of talk recently about a design including an image from istock being used on the cover of Time Magazine. The reported price is 30 dollars, though it is not clear if this is what the photographer received or (more likely) he received 20% of this. Amongst all the back and forth discussion on newsgroups about how great/awful this is for the photographer, I think the most pertinent post I have seen is a simple link to Time Magazine's advertising rates. Time Magazine is not to blame here, the photographer is, because he made the image available for that price, with no reasonable limits on use. It's a nice picture, but no one should pay $1000 for a picture of an isolated jar. I don't care about their budgets, the picture is a generic isolated shot with no production cost, and not worth $1000, simple as that. That's my opinion. 383
Microstock News / Re: New Stock - WideStockPhoto« on: November 25, 2009, 06:42 »
$1-$4 is too little for a vector license.
$30 is way too little for an extended license. 33% is too little for a newcomer with no customers. The photographers guide and the illustrators guide are in russian. I won't be signing up anytime soon. 384

General Stock Discussion / Re: Heard of Colourbox?« on: November 05, 2009, 15:44 »
Wow, I'm quite surprised.
I live in Denmark, and have often seen images from this site used by major companies (print and web) here in Denmark. I always believed this was a macro agency without really having a look. It seems to me that subscription prices are nano (really! 1 license allows 1000 users to download images unlimited from their collection for three months) whereas single image products are at macro prices(? - approx. $120 for one image). Also, on the "sign-up as a photographer"-page it says nothing about commissions and their terms of service-page seems to be broken. It's not anything like microstock though, their photographers are actually working in teams (and there is probably no way for them to earn money proportionally with their skills and efforts, as in microstock). All in all, it actually seems to me as a threat to microstock. http://ekstrabladet.dk/kup/sundhed/article1249957.ece This is a link to an article of the danish tabloid Ekstra Bladet, which is one of the biggest in Denmark. The image credits Colourbox.com http://kvinder.bt.dk/menu/sundhed/vis/laes/10-slags-mad-der-forbraender-fedt-kopi-1/ This is a link to an article of the biggest competitor to Ekstra Bladet - B.T. - also using images from Colourbox.com http://jp.dk/indland/krimi/article1874757.ece ...And Jyllandsposten (known for publishing images of Muhammed) http://www.dr.dk/sundhed/Ditsundevalg/Artikler/2009/1105142908.htm And DR (Denmarks Radio) Seems that everyone is using them 387
General Stock Discussion / Re: How was your October - Earnings breakdown« on: November 01, 2009, 08:52 »
BME by far. iStockPhoto beat Shutterstock for the first time, and is now my no. 1 earner. Graphic Leftovers has performed incredibly well for me (a few dollars away from beating DT and StockXpert), and so did ClipartOf this month. BME at Fotolia as well. All things considered, a great month.

Shutterstock.com / Re: What do you disagree about SS??« on: October 09, 2009, 12:19 »Last time I looked at that 'top 50' I concluded most of them got there by keyword spamming. Now there's something to complain about. Well, I strongly disagree! All of the top 50 images are outstanding images of high quality and usability. They cover popular subjects and are well composited. Besides, I don't believe that keyword-spamming actually works. Why would you search for something, say, a flower, then end up buying an image of a monkey? This might actually happen occasionally, but is definitely not sending any images to the top 50. 391

I haven't had many as well, but I have had three ELs on the same image on Shutterstock. It is this one: http://www.shutterstock.com/results.mhtml#photo_id=24607831
I guess it is being used as a happy birthday card or something like that, but what do I know. Either the three ELS have been a coincidence or birthday card illustrations attract EL-buyers 393

"FAQ > Uploading Illustrations > Can I setup a custom FTP channel for my Ilustrations?
No yet. We are working on this, to allow you to customize how files should be packaged before they are sent to a remote FTP site, for instance, reducing the size of the JPG preview or grouping the files into a zip package. We expect this feature to be available at the beginning of September 2009." WOW, I'm dying to see this and will not hesitate to buy this program once it's done. That would save me SO much time. So, I guess this feature is just about to be launched ? 394

They are basically telling you that your business isn't that serious anyway. In order to use your images, they will have to buy the appropriate licenses - just like everyone else. 395

General Stock Discussion / Re: New contributor referral program at The3dStudio.com - 5% for life« on: August 25, 2009, 02:29 »
It does seem like you have a customer base - do you accept vectors (EPS) or do you intend to do it in the near future ?
And also, yes, you would attract significantly more european contributors with an online tax treaty form like the one they set up on Shutterstock 397
Panthermedia.net / Re: PantherMedia and microstock images« on: August 13, 2009, 08:55 »Baked beans (even the same brand) are sold at different prices in different retail outlets, why is this a problem? Yes, but usually those baked beans would be of different quality. Prices within the same brand can differ, but not as significantly as image prices on the micro-, the mid- and the macro stock agencies. Do you sell your images both as macro RF and micro RF ? 398

Panthermedia.net / PantherMedia and microstock images« on: August 13, 2009, 05:29 »
Do PantherMedia accept microstock images? If yes, what justifies the higher prices for M-XXXXL sizes than most other agencies? My conscience does not allow me to contribute to sites with such significantly higher prices, when the same images are for sale for much less on other sites - unless there is a difference in the licensing terms or the general service. For instance; on ClipartOf, my prices are higher than usually ($15-$80), but this is due to giving the buyer the right to use my images commercially so I can justify it by that. Is it the same with PM ?
Their large list of stock distributors (apparently including Zymmetrical) certainly does look appealing 400
