Hi Crazy and Lisa, No , I am only on Ibuprofen, the fun ones always make me cranky in the long run, and you guys don't want that I am always looking into every possibility that is out there so I know where I stand in this business. If there was a chance to make the shift I might have but there isn't so that makes the decision easier. I still am not happy with the way they changed the standard of exclusivity in the industry but if I want to play there it is important to know the company as well as I can. I think they have a very strong hold on the Micro market and I think their future is bright for people that produce large quantities of salable images ( at least to make a strong income ). Times change in just a year and I try to change with them as much as possible. If I had the choice with what I see taking place in the Micro market I would go exclusive with my Micro RF mainly because I follow the money as much as possible and I think there is a strong opportunity to make good returns for another 2-3 years until the company is then sold. After new ownership it is hard to say what will happen. Just to confirm, Jonathan Klein said the company will be sold off in the next three years after they build up their inner agencies with higher returns. I think they will rely on Istock heavily to add to that growth and they know how to do that. I am sad for those that are losing a lot on this deal, I know I will lose a bit but I will keep uploading as a non exclusive because I believe in the companies opportunity to make money even if not an exclusive. Cheers, Jonathan

Hi all,
I have spoken directly with the company and it is my RF images in Macro that are copy written to my company that keeps me out, I can't un-license them for several years. Thanks for your input.

Thanks Sean,
If possible you know the company as good if not better than most everyone, can you point me to the part of the contract the reflects that information? I would really appreciate it.
Thanks, Jonathan

Hi Lisa,
Thanks for the tip. I have spoken with people there but that is a good point to make clear to them. I appreciate the guidance.

Hi Helix,
I think the reduction is unfortunate but they are the top player and I don't think they are going anywhere soon. I think they are positioning themselves against the competition and trying to outplay them. I also don't think they need as many photos as they have and I would prefer they just pull images that have not sold for three years. Many other Macro agencies do this. It keeps your Sell through rate higher and makes you more desirable for an agency to represent you. At the moment anyone can upload there images to Micro but the future might hold something different. Trying to always make your sell through rate strong will only help your business in the long run.

Hi Microbus,
Thank you for the explanation and support. Just to make it clear to everyone I did not make any form of monetary reward or otherwise for presenting in Russia, just like I will not receive any form of profit not even the airfare or hotel, for the upcoming PhotPlus panel I am on next week in N.Y. For me it is about meeting new people in the business. I am really not trying to even build a following I just want to educate people in the field I am in and rub shoulders with the agencies and people at the top to advance my agency and the others I am owner in. It is an important part of building an agency to speak directly with those you have only been e-mailing, it strengthens the relationship and the spoken word is so much clearer than e-mails. If and when I want to start building a Micro following I will probably produce a Blog, right now it's just about sharing and meeting influential people in the industry.
Thanks, Jonathan

Hi Race, Yes but other sites make it way easier. My Facebook is a snap. I am old and feeble as my memory has proven twice this week but I will give it my best. I imagine I will screw it up a couple of times but I will figure it out and show some of my HDR experiments. Thanks for the road map Best, Jonathan

Hi Elenathewise, I would be happy to but to be completely honest I don't know how to upload images to the site. If some of you smart people can steer an old man the right direction I would be happy to share some examples. Can you believe I don't know how to upload a photo here Embarrassing! Best, Jonathan

Hi Lisa, No I can't say I have seen percentage drop below 20% before but there was a time when no one would believe 20% and we all got use to it and made a lot of money. I don't agree with the agencies choice but if I don't like it I have the choice to go somewhere else. We live in a Capitalist society not a Socialist one so we are stuck behind the 8 ball. I learned many years ago that we have very little power. If I was trying to sell someone something I would start high and end up coming down once the buyer put up enough struggle. The buyer would have thought they were empowered and I would walk away with just what I was hoping for. Maybe businesses do the same thing, pad their drops and then give everyone a chance to bitch then they change it to make you feel empowered when in the long run they ended up with happy contributors and the price they already were after. If not enough noise is made they leave it and make even more money than they had hoped for. I can't say that agencies do this but it is an old trick that still works very well. Once again excuse me on my number information this last week. My wife is recovering from surgery, I have been on the road and raising the family at the same time limping in a leg brace from a torn LCL this last weekend playing soccer, so the sleep has been missing and I am obviously off my game. Not trying to make excuses but until this week my numbers have not been off so I hope people can understand that my answers have been hindered by unexpected circumstance. Gostywk was kind enough to point out my latest error. That is two in one week, not good of me. I will pay closer attention as this is the last trip of the year. I will say that it is important for people to point out my mistakes this week, I wish some could find a bit of grace in their presentation but that is what you get when you try to share information. However, any one that points out my mistakes is helping me in a big way. Still one more trip to go to PhotoPlus next week so if anyone is there come over and say hi to the guy limping around in the brace Best, Jonathan

Hi Paulie, Oh you know me to well If you are good at reading between the lines I am still the same old guy just trying to keep the peace and spread some info. Play me in any sport, you will see the true me, I will play till one of us drops. Besides I have been way to friendly lately Best, Jonathan

Hi Lisa,
I am not an exclusive at this time but if I could do it I would drop the other Micros in a heart beat right now. Being owner of another agency is not a breech in the contract as I know it. It has to do with having RF at other agencies copy written in your name. Cheers, Jonathan

Hey Gostywk,
I am off on the Istock numbers I am about to hit 40,000 which would be 35%, I read the site info incorrectly. The idea was not to brag about numbers the idea is that no other agency makes a higher per image return and then rewards you for your hard work. Watch how well Istock does in the next year they will easily pass last years sales in a horrible economy. My mistake with the numbers this week. Lots going on and it was completely a mis print. Thank you for bringing to my attention no matter what vehicle you delivered it on. Always happy to step up for my errors and take responsibility.

There is one thing I would like to pass credit onto. Sean is one of the few outspoken people here that actually shows us who his identity is. For that his information carries a lot more power for me than many on this site.

I am 50 and play sports like I think I am still in my 20's. That's why I am always hurt : ) Torn LCL at the moment and a broken elbow that has needed surgery for 8 months. Doctor calls it boomeritis. Boomers that still think they are youthful, says it's time to hang up my cleats. NEVER! Jonathan

I couldn't agree more Lee. Is it time to go exclusive while the others jump ship. Sounds like an opportunity waiting to happen for many shooters. If I went exclusive at Istock I would start at 40%. I haven't seen those kind of numbers in years. They also now pay on a motivation level of who produces the best and highest selling work with more returns. I wish I could say that is how it has been done in the past through Macro but no such offer has ben present. So if you work harder and make more return to me is a very motivating offer.

CC,
What Lisa said makes the most sense on this entire subject. Lisa is the closest of anyone here to seeing the big picture as to what what the powers are planning but Lisa has always been one of the people here that does here homework and can read between the lines. I respect the people that have been quoted about not buying from Istock anymore but have you checked out how many buyers they have. Think twice, this is a Getty owned company and they have been top dogs for the past 12 years or so for one simple reason, they know the market very well. I don't think that they will lose the lions share of sales because of this change. Just my opinion of coarse. I have been expecting this price change for sometime but so has everyone that knows this market just look to the past. We used to get a 50/50 split years ago. It was not till Macro RF came into the picture that the 20% share was introduced, Getty's sales took off during that period.

Hi Crazy,
There are several companies I am affiliated with that have been asked to place images in the Agency collection and yes I have been asked for my company to produce content for the collection. They have added several agencies not just Getty. As to weather I am going that route I will have to let you know in a couple weeks after Photo East.

Hi CClapper, Nope! Have to do that homework on your own for this one. This might make a couple people happy on this site but I don't share everything till I put it to use myself. I am very sure that things are not what they seem. Sorry to be so mysterious but the writing is all over the wall if you spend hours on the internet tracking info or hear it from a very reliable source. Isn't this career awesome Good Luck, Jonathan

Hi All, Yea, I have used it a lot recently for work and love it from surreal to photo realistic. I spend a lot less time shooting an interior as apposed to having to light every nook and cranny and spend more time on the backend in my office which is cheaper and easier than spending days at a location. We just shot a new High end Condo building with 84 floors and we shot 25 shots a day of interiors, got to love that. We started dropping in a model for an exposure and lighting them then just stripping the model into the shot in post. Photomatix is my choice but the one good thing in the article in PDN was they mentioned some other softwares on the market that are starting to challenge Photomatix. One photographer in the article (I think it was Michael James ) said he uses different softwares for different images or different effects and does not rely on just one HDR software. Take a look at all the layering and masking Trey Ratcliff does and the HDR is just a small portion of his workflow. I say bring on any new app. or software and let the user decide if they like it or not. Maybe this is a good sign in PDN. There has been so much controversy over the past couple of years with Micro and Macro that this might be a sign of digging for controversy because things are starting to settle in a bit, or people are just tired of hearing about us Best, Jonathan
