It's my understanding that you have to buy a new license for each website if you would like to use the same image for more than one project.

I could be wrong though.

I think a designer can use one single license for more than one client.  I think that's what I read at DT and SS.  Maybe I am wrong.

This would be why many website owners can't provide any evidence of legitimate use of an image.

377
Providing evidence of legitimate use is not always easy or possible.  So, accusing someone of using an image without  license is very complicated.  It's different when there is a specific infringement like an image bigger than 800x600 in a website, etc.

When I find one of my images being used in a website, I don't  contact the owner/administrator to confirm whether they have a license or not.  I feel it would be too annoying.  I just hope and trust they have bought the license.    I only contact if there is a specific infringement.

378
Well naturally the agency will let you download the image which is all you pretty much get, besides a receipt for your purchase of credits/a subscription.

Don't tell me there is no "paper trail" to confirm that a buyer actually registered, paid and downloaded the image.

That would be more than concerning...

There is a receipt but just for the credits you have bought (I found the one from BS).  Not a receipt for the license of an specific image.  And at the download history, it's only the thumbnails of images you have downloaded.   It would be a good idea if buyers could also get a license usage document for any specific image they have downloaded.

379
Of course I would only do so after the respective web hosting company has determined that the company in question has indeed violated their terms of services by not presenting a usage license (which I always demand even BEFORE contacting the web host!).

A usage license?  A year ago I bought a license from BS and some others from 123RF for a website I designed.  But all I got were the images.  Never a License usage document.   I don't even remember if I ever received a receipt or something.

Images should get a best match position based ONLY on merit, the more commercial, the better and the more DLs,  only then does an image deserve to jump in best match. Never because it exclusive or non-exclusive, ...

That is what I have always thought and I think it's bad business that exclusives get rewarded just because they are exclusive, not because their files are any better. Which to me seems so totally ridiculous because Getty makes more profit on independent best-selling photos than they do mediocre-selling exclusive photos. But hey whatever, they have all the big bucks and they know what they are doing. <cough>

Mmm...  Exclusives are making a huge sacrifice and commitment to IS.  Don't they deserve an advantage over non-exclusives? I think they do.

Thinkstock.  I hate Thinkstock.  And many of you do too.

I am going exclusive soon but I am not expecting my images will get any better best match placement.

What made you think there is currently such a benefit for exclusives ?  (Though it would be great!)

Ouch!  I shouldn't have checked my account today.   Last two days with 0 sales  :'(

Hope the next two weeks get better.

friday and saturdays are the worst days of the week.

Yes, but 0 sales is too bad.  Even on a Friday or Saturday.

^  My sentiments exactly.

I think with $200 a day you can give it a go - but this depends on a lot of "if"s.
If you do not have debts to pay, if you do not have mortgage, if you do not have big family, etc. etc.
Microstock seems to be working for you - but it does not work for everyone, and in truth this is a slave's work (considering the cut the microstock sites take). Of course you will hear different from couple of people who like it and who are sufficiently talented and working hard enough to place themselves among those couple of % who can support themselves from microstock.

It is not a business or a job - it is a competition. I am sure that someone will point out immediately that business IS competition - but I am afraid that we would be talking about different things. There are tens of thousands of athletes - but very few of them make living out of sport. Simply - there are many competitors, but winners are few. If you are happy with this - go for it.

My point is that if 100% of people currently submitting to microstock work hard, shoot a lot and produce sellable images - still only a small percentage will succeed. In my books this is not business - but a cross between competition and lottery.

A plumber runs a business - he does a job, he charges you, he collects his money, and moves to another job. He does not perform work at any place which may be in need of his services - in the hope that someone maybe will pay him.

There IS competition in ANY business.  Do you think plumbers don't have to compete to get a client? There are many plumbers out there.  The one with the best fees, service, speed, etc will get the client.  Like a photographer in the microstock industry: the one with the right image will get the sale.  Both have to compete.

I say everyone should quit their jobs and just do what they love.  You get more time with your kids and spouse.  Times will be tough, but you'll be stronger, happier.  Just don't get cancer because the doctors are all on the golf course.  Be careful not to set your house on fire because the firemen are now fly fishermen.  And learn how to hunt for your food and knit your clothing from pelts, because there will be no stores... why would clerks and shelf-stockers toil away in a soul-crushing store when they could be making jewelry or finger-painting?

But then... who will be left to buy your photos?  Hmmm... maybe we need capitalism to still function after all.
Would you advice that?  Because I wouldn't.

Anyone wishing to quit a job, must have a good plan.   And as I said before:  Being independent is not for everyone.

Note:  What an interesting thread.  I am really enjoying it.  :)

388
I don't mean to offend anyone but, some people will just never make the jump to be independent. They just don't have the spirit to go that way.  They have been educated to have a boss and need to feel they are "safe".

On the contrary, I need to feel that my family is "safe."
...

Or it may be that, like a few others here, you're risk averse; you value financial security more than a healthier family lifestyle. I'm at the opposite end of the scale: As a single father with a college-bound teenager, the freedom I have now when taken together with the time I've been able to spend with my son far outweigh the benefits I had when pursuing a traditional career. Like you, I truly enjoyed my well-paying job, but it's absurd to compare where I would still be to where I am now if I hadn't accepted the risk. And I'm not alone in this - there are many who tell a similar tale. Like they say: no pain, no gain.
I agree: No pain, no gain.

My wife and I quitted our job many years ago.  It's not been easy, there's been very hard times but we are happy we did it.  The hard times have helped us grow stronger both as individuals and as a couple  Working from home, and having lots of time to be with our kids has been the most wonderful experience.

Come on!  Isn't $45.000 the average household income in US?  And here we are talking about one single person making that amount.

If someone is are already making that amount without working on this full time, just imagine what could be achieved doing it full time!

I don't mean to offend anyone but, some people will just never make the jump to be independent. They just don't have the spirit to go that way.  They have been educated to have a boss and need to feel they are "safe".

390
Can anyone actually generate a minimum of $200.00 a weekday ($4330.00 a month only from weekdays) without being working on this fulltime?

:o    ???    ::)    :-[

Isn't it better to just mark the "Sutterstock Opt Out" option and don't ask support to close the account?  So, if you ever go back you will not have lost what you have already achieved.

I think there are some IS exclusives who have done that.

When I started shooting stills, I used hot-lights and still have some of them around. I've been playing with video and those old CFL's are working out just fine.

I started with hot lights too, and still have them around.  For static objects they were just fine if you have a steady hand or are willing to use a tripod, but for people they were pretty cumbersome.

First off, people get hot under "hot" lights - particularly here in Florida.  Secondly, and more important, you just can't get the shutter speeds to stop action and camera shake as well as with strobes.  You either have to shoot at higher ISO and deal with noise, or you have to be tethered to a tripod and pray your models don't move a muscle.

I used to have to take dozens more shots of each pose when I was using hot lights, just to make sure I had enough usable sharp ones.  This equaled hundreds more images to sort through from each day of shooting. Time wasted on both ends - shooting and processing.

I can't see ever going back to shooting model stills with hot lights.  Shudder...

Same experience.  And I would never use hot lights to shot people. It's a waste of time, money, and energy.

So, since I use strobes for my photo shots, shooting some video as part of the session would require a lot of changes in lighting equipment and lighting setup.

393
Hilary, your angry posts are not contributing to the topic of this thread (which is very interesting by the way).
-Is stock video the next big thing or just a fad?-

Back to topic:
No, I don't think video is the next big thing.
We'll certainly see more video everyday, but never as much as we see stills.

394
Wouldn't you be tempted to do still shots after going to all the trouble of model/styling/make-up etc for a video shoot?

I'm still not sure why you think it is so simple.

I'll elaborate, once again.  You said "a usual shoot".  A usual shoot involves strobe lights, and, for most, shooting handheld, going solo.  A video shoot involves hot lights, numerous pieces of hardware, like a tripod and a glider or a boom, plus, possibly people to do follow focus and audio.  As well as talent who can not only smile and look good for 1/125, but can successfully act to convey a message.  And other things.

So, you said "since you have the studio/model set up anyway, what's the biggie to shoot some video as part of a usual shoot".  There, I told you "the biggie".  I'm sharing information.  That should make you happy, right?

Sean is right.

If you are really professional, if you are really serious about what you do, it's not just a matter of pushing a different button.  It's not that simple.

Photography and video are completely different.  Different equipment, different skills and talents.

An attempt to keep contributors happy and keep them from closing accounts?
An attempt to attract contributors who have already left?

Maybe they don`t like your milk related images.   ;D

I'm happy because they are in AND because I made more than I anticipated  ;D

If I made a million dollars with Thinkstock that would mean I'd make 10 million with Shutterstock - then I would not be here posting this...

Most likely some of your sales at SS (or elsewhere) got transferred to TS where they earned a much lower commission. Does volunteering your portfolio for lower commissions make you happy too?

Good point!  :D

General Stock Discussion / Re: Weekend sales @ IS
« on: April 24, 2010, 21:37 »
How many are you talking about? Youve had 70 sales in two years.  Hardly anything to base statistic on...

Yes, with 70 sales in two years is better not to make any kind of statistics.

A few more or less sales make no difference.  One single good or bad weekend means nothing.

Some time ago I made a similar comment to someone in this forum...

It is probably now possible to run an entire microstock on Amazon hosting and storage infrastructure - for a price of course.
It's just about the only service they don't offer - for the moment!

I think Snapixel uses Amazon hosting and storage infrastructure.
