« on: August 12, 2008, 11:16 »
Well, we are in the middle of so called "Summer Slowdown" so this may be affecting your sales.

Also, the frequency of your uploads and port size could have an impact.
I myself, very seldom get 'zero' download days during the week - they are usually at weekends.

But taking all things into account, I think most would say things are running a little slow just now.

I am only a small player with a small port.  However, I almost always sell something on Shutterstock each day.  I am now on my 4th day without one single download.  Really strange.

The other strange thing is my last 3 downloads were all of the same picture -- one that had never sold before (been online for about 4 months).

Have stopped uploading a while back now.
It's time to wait and see!

Time will tell -  you can always upload the rest if any wind catches the sails!
Hope the breeze gets up next month!

Yes! more contributors = more images - more competition and unfortunately and probably less sales for individuals.

I suppose the best we can do is strive for quality and hope that a good pic will continue to sell.

I'm not with 123rf, but both SS and StockXpert are doing nicely for me.

I wouldn't be so certain about filling the frame.
I got knocked on one or two for tight cropping.

Shoot as large as you can, without having to crop (fill the frame) and reduce to Minimum allowed. It makes a big difference.

And sales have been pretty good recently also.

Are you selling on other sites?
If you are and successfully, then it's no harm to say so when asked with the submission.

That way, SS can check out your work and see if it will be profitable to take you on.

I have re submitted images (after some time) and got accepted.

Yes!, the likelihood ( I would think) is that you will meet a different reviewer.

Lisa,

I think where you saw this was over in thread " Have you all seen this - SS On Demand" as posted by Leaf.

Can you elaborate?  I too have noticed new images being ignored - I assumed that since I've been trying more actively to add volume that the quality was deteriorating!  LOL!

Can't find where I read about the search engine changes.  One of the threads here, but brief search did not turn it up.

It wasn't official word, but observations from contributors who keep on top of things more than I do.  (I stopped doing sample searches years ago - too depressing to see where my stuff winds up).  Since their observations match my own recent experience, I will assume there's some truth to them.

I think you can safely assume your quality isn't deteriorating :)

General Stock Discussion / Top Of The EL's
« on: August 06, 2008, 16:10 »
Right guys, this is your chance to show off and let everyone know who has had the most EL sales (across all sites) since they became a micro contributor.

I'll start ( and at the bottom of the ladder) with just 1 so far.

Sometimes feel like that, but you know it's quite nice seeing those royalties rolling in.
Like a good song they can be paying you back for many years to come.

I still shoot for myself on and off and that's good too.

Good to know that Leaf.

Thanks!

I agree Sharpshot.

Yes!, so heavily biased towards new images and the new ones are not necessarily the best!

Also, the constant demand of having to "feed" I think can be off putting for new contributors.
Should be more balanced I feel.

I just had my first one for $2.85 as well.  SS need to find a way to bring some of our older images back to life now.  The heavy bias towards new images leaves a lot of older images that once sold well doing nothing.  I liked the Lucky Oliver sideshow and I am surprised the other sites haven't copied that idea.

It is weighted less strongly towards new images than what it used to be.  Previously the default search was new images, now it is most popular.
The most popular also has a sprinkle of new images in it, but the oldies but goodies are there as well.  I think it is a fair system.
What I think is more frustrating is sites that bury new images on page 50 and they never get a chance.

With shutterstock, new images are given a chance to shine, if they are good, they will stay at the top, if they aren't popular they will sink to the bottom like a rock.

I agree Sharpshot.

Also, the constant demand of having to "feed" I think can be off putting for new contributors who could be very talented, but don't need the pressure of having to constantly shoot for SS.

Congrats!

Good to see that it's moving.
Hopefully I will get my first soon!

Just had my first on demand sale which earnt me $2.85 the uploaded file was 4mp (a 9mp file went elsewhere and SS are selling a uprezzed 16mp version). I only ever had one $5.99 sale at SS sister site.

Not a great % for us but I prefer getting $2.85 instead of 38c rather than 30c instead of $7.50 at another site that a few of us have been complaining about recently.

« on: August 06, 2008, 05:08 »
I suppose you could attribute some of this to the so called " Summer Slowdown". I too have had similar "zero" days in a row and at the W/end.

We have to realise too I suppose, that as time goes by it all gets the more competitive for contributors.
It's all very well " feeding" SS with new images but all the time we have to strive to keep the quality high - and that's demanding enough!!

I have small portfolio of some 111 images, but I never, ever before had 0 dl's per day except few sundays. But now, I have three days in a row with 0 dl's and I uploaded my last batch one week ago. It's really strange for SS

Shutterstock.com / Re: Sales on SS some observations
« on: August 04, 2008, 16:49 »
Racephoto

I suspect your observations are not very far out.

One thing you didn't mention is size of portfolio, how important this is, but I suppose it depends heavily on the quality within.

Also, surely it cant be all dependent on new work. I'm sure some buyers must search Most Popular, delve further into photographers portfolios or bookmark contributors etc.

Here's what I've concluded is at work, at SS. Call it a WAG or observation from others results. Call it dumb-ass and wrong. I don't care.  ;)

1) New members and new uploads get heavy positive weighting in the search.

2) Photos that sell well, get extra promotion in the search engine. (The rich get richer, elevated in the search) People can't buy what they can't see, older images and images without sales, drop down in the search.

3) There is a core group of repeat buyers who appear to search daily for good images for their collection.

4) As the total number of images up for sale on any site increases, exposure of any single image, will decrease proportionally. However if you have something unusual and unique, it will stay up near the top longer.

----

Also noted by some: You need to "feed the beast" on a regular basis to keep it happy.

Hypothetical: You have 40 new images.

Theory: Uploading ten per week will get you better sales and results than uploading 40 and doing nothing for a month.

Personal experience from anyone who has tested this theory would be interesting. It seems logical considering all the other assumed factors.

----

Last one, and I'm not buying it, because of the variables and unknowns. Some people say they get better sales if a new photo appears on SS on Monday. (and lower sales if it first appears on a Friday) Since there's no way to know when you will be reviewed, or what day the photos will go live, this makes no sense.

Also I suspect that more people have time on weekends to take or upload new photos, so the volume of uploads would be highest Saturday and Sunday, then Monday, and depending on the time it takes to have them reviewed, there will be an influx of new photos, later in the week, as a result of the increased uploading.

More new photos, means most of the old photos on site, drop down the search faster. In other words, it's not the day of the week that affects sales, it's the number of new competing photos that appear, that will drive down sales.

If I find something that I think is really special I get a bit excited and thus makes it harder to keep steady.
