I use e-junkie to handle sales logistics, and a custom-built website houses the whole thing. http://www.emberstock.com

Im digging the site! good luck with your venture and keep us updated on your success! I plan to do that in a year or two with my vectors.

Right.  Including Gaussian blur.  Or high pass.  Sharpen too.

would you have an end product without the filter being used? in the examples shown by the author, i think not.

What if its a competing filter product that looks similiar to this filter. Their license prevents commercial usage. Whos going to police all this BS. Make is simple. if it aint yours, dont use it to make money off.

Then it is a legal issue between the two filter developers. Easy.

wouldnt it be a legal issue with the filter company protecting their IP and SS who is making money from a file that mainly consists of their IP?

OT: Why would anyone even want to use that filter, the results doesn't even look like real film, at least the perforation doesn't look like 35mm film.

I think Shutterstock have done wrongly here; if the filter site says it's okay to use the filters for commercial use, then it is.

without those filters in your samples shown, the files would be very simple pieces that most buyers would pass up. I am against blatant profiteering from other peoples hard work. Same goes for supposed photographers who take shots of dead artists work. If you cant create those types of filters yourself, you shouldnt be submitting them as your own.

Just my take... I think filter forge has been seeing their textures used on SS and is trying to protect their business. They probably sent some sort of warning letter to sue to SS. On istock, you have to prove its your own textures you created and i dont know if its like that on SS. Inspectors are probably aware of this issue so they see your submission. flags gets raised and your caught. they will most likely be taking those samples down one by one soon.

Im hoping people might share their opinions on their views of what constitutes successful files. Im sure this would be pretty interesting read for newbies who are clueless about successful files at least for vectors. i know i was pretty clueless for at least a year.

Im an exclusive vector artist on istock and i mainly try to create vectors that are 15-20 credits range while most of my sellers are 15 credits. I would love to hear different stories from others not exclusive to istock to compare notes. Im not geting into what sells since the demand for different subject matter varies.

I mainly look at dl's a month to guage a hot seller. heres my opinion on the numbers

dl's a month
50+ god i wish i had some files that fit into this category!!!!
30+ jackpot
20+ awesome
10+ great seller
5+ good seller
3-5  still decent
1-3 i hope i didnt spend too much time on these
less than 1 a month means my execution is bad and need to study competition/demand

I also guage by downloads to views. A download for every 30 views is very good and under 20 views is pretty much front page material.

Unfortunately, these days at istock, the numbers are dropping so these number are sort of based on what i thought prior to sept 2010. My expectations have lowered =(

I also think these higher numbers i have posted will get harder and harder to achieve as more competition takes a piece. I would love to know what it was like in the heydays since i wasnt around then.

I only say this because i feel buyers are leaving istock and most probably coming to shutterstock and others. these are buyers who are used fine dining. They should take this opportunity to up their game and try to lure professional vector artists. If im feeling this way, im sure there are tons more.

Umm... Could you be more insulting to us long time Shutterstock contributors? What makes you think if Shutterstock had a premium collection that you would be allowed to participate in it? I'd think it would be reserved for those that have had a track record of sales at Shutterstock. Look, I'd love to make changes to many of the micro sites, but it's based on experience using those sites. I wouldn't knock Shutterstock before you've even used it.

Why would you be insulted? Im sorry if i came off that way but there are different approaches to creating artwork. I tend to have a smaller portfolio investing more time in each file i create. Currently, I cant compete on the feeding the beast model that is Shutterstock.

I realize what i am proposing is different than shutterstocks current model. Its more of a rant than anything else and i didnt intend to insult anyone.

... step out of the all you can eat mentality and go with some fine dining on the side!!!

Shutterstock do have PPD's for example. Shutterstock's relatively basic business model and pricing architecture is actually what the buying public appear to like. That's why Shutterstock are going from strength to strength whilst Istock and others are suffering.

Vectors were always priced high on IS because only one size could be sold. With subscription packages on Shutterstock you get the full-size image anyway so there's no real justification for vectors to be priced differently.

Unless i have an option for my files only to be available for PPD, i have a hard time accepting my files to be downloaded by subscription package. i think its more principle than anything else. I value my artwork and think my style is better than clipart. Yes, i can create things i believe would be appropriate for shutterstock, but i cant justify putting some files i created that took me 10-30 hours of work on.

I only say this because i feel buyers are leaving istock and most probably coming to shutterstock and others. these are buyers who are used fine dining. They should take this opportunity to up their game and try to lure professional vector artists. If im feeling this way, im sure there are tons more.

I may be relatively new to stock but I dont agree in what you have said, why are exclusives not worth anymore? because of the photo+? you can tell tons of reasons but that one isnt relevant IMHO

This is the only line i understood from your post. Im figuring english isnt your first language.

If you want to become exclusive, you better be able to provide vetta or vetta type files. While price is important, getting views on your file is essential for sales. Most people make most of their money from their best sellers which could be anywhere from 5-15% of their portfolio. maybe 30% of an artists portfolio is average sellers.
Here is where you need to use some brain power. independents outnumber exclusives 3 to 1 or something like that. lets say they fill up their 10% of their portfolios with P+. All of a sudden, exclusives now have so much more competition from independents based on price. Price of a file plays a big part of best match equation.
It all comes down to how much artificial bump exclusives get with their files. Recent actions by istock clearly indicates they only care about more money. I dont have much confidence that istock would favor my files when they make more money off P+ files.
So going forward for all exclusives, the 30% of your portfolios (avg sellers) that get 5-10 downloads a month will probably see significant decrease in money and downloads.
The hows your june thread should be interesting.

im almost inclined to take half of what istock nominated for the new vector vettas from my portfolio out of the collection. I know these files are unique, but they are not sellable with these new prices.  I feel bad that these new files and many many more just like it will fill up viewing spaces. I created them to showcase my style mainly to get freelance clients.

411
Excuse my ignorance if there is already something besides subscription plan. I cant possibly sell some of my files on istock for pennies for download on your site. Im sure there are many artists like me who will cancel istock exclusitivity if a higher pay as you go plan was introduced. step out of the all you can eat mentality and go with some fine dining on the side!!!

Wheres the perks for exclusives anymore? It definitely feels like a trap. Every new collection these greedy mofos fart out, the regular main collection gets stomped further and further into obscurity. Unless you fill the majority of your portfolio as agency and vetta files, theres no longer any point in becoming exclusive imo.
I think this is a last ditch effort to squeeze out the most from buyers as they are exiting. win win for indies and istock while bad for exclusives.

im totally distracted by the ugly bushes in the bottom right corner and the uneven lighting.  im only commenting since you posted your image and wanted some feedback on it. Its a tough shot to pull off without a lot of time invested in it and i would never put that much time in it for micro prices.

« on: May 10, 2011, 14:58 »
given that the majority of the buyers are designers and they buy stock to save time and effort, im sure png files for isolated shots would fly off the shelf. time to take that picture of the apple isolated on white png file =D

Up until late last year, i used to get the majority of my downloads 9-5pm eastern us time. Nowadays Im getting downloads at all hours  which means that the buyer market has been expanding into asia but i believe istock has lost a lot of US buyers. anyone else seeing a similiar trend?

417
i thought the best match was skewed towards price. If P+ files are the same price as regular exclusive files, wouldnt it mean that it is essentially on the same best match placement as exclusive files? anyone do some tests on this yet?

Found via istockphoto thread.

KKT's Foot-in-month Quote of the Day:
"Expansion has been tough for the company, though, because of a contributor payment system that the company judged financially unsustainable. A switch last year to a performance-based compensation scheme was painful, but in the end, only about 0.1 percent of the more than 100,000 contributors were dramatically affected, Thompson said.

"It didn't really affect most people," Thompson said. "Everyone sort of settled down."

And if we didn't, we were LOBOtomised.

Lies, damned lies, statistics and spin.

hahah i was laughing when i read that. But seriously, why would he say anything else since this article is advertisement for the uninformed? It is really laughable to all who knows whats going on.

Please! The vicious racism and ageism of it! I'm over 55(and white and European) and I think Lagereek is talking tosh. You need to get away from making up negative stereotypes of people, it does no good in the long run, you know.

Stereotypes are there for reasons.... dont be so pc... im not making up anything, just observing facts. You took offense to this because you believe that statement has some truth to it. I didnt mean that all older white europeans are racists. I was just acknowledging that racism was more the norm and accepted back in the days.

Lol, I wasn't offended. Your logic was way off, though. Stereotypes paint young black, inner-city males as drug users and criminals but it doesn't mean you can assume that because someone is a drug using criminal that person must be a black inner-city male. Stereotypes are dangerous and misleading.

If i said "you sound 27 and black" would that even have made sense? Im not the one making this negative stereotype up.
By your direct response, you were offended. Lol all u want... im just curious to know why the offense, because you fit into that category i mentioned.
The only thing i can assume from looking at a drug user is that the person likes to get high. The media likes to stereotype that and unfortunately the media is mostly run by whites. again, its just statistical facts. just chilax! (cool off and relax)

I think youre president Bush was better then this clown Obama?  he seams a complete joke to us here in Europe. We wouldnt even consider him as a porter to open the front-doors to parliament, here in Europe.

Sounds like your over 55 and white

^^^ wow.... what other conspiracies do you believe in? and the funny thing is there are lots of pple like you.

These aren't conspiracies these are questions I'm raising because these things clearly look off.

Unfortunately... and the funnier thing is, that there are more like you who will believe anything thrown at them without questioning it.  It makes politics quite achievable ;)

funny how u lump everybody that questions your thought process as some sort of brainwashed imbeciles...
Im sure you have tons of questions swirling inside your head

by the amount of new exclusives joining and posting on here at msg. Looks like people are really starting to look at alternatives.
