Hopefully Yay will be my biggest portfolio. I am aiming for about 1000 I have at the moment.

Once past that it will only be the regular updates to SS and DT. Then I will focus on Alamy. Right now, I just don't think I have the talent for Alamy.

Until I read this thread, I didn't know they were open for business.

I imagine their marketing model is a tad different, I see no Google ads.

You guys that were there at the start with DT or SS would know more.

I am hoping for a slow 5% monthly growth in sales starting from 0 to maybe 5 sales after say 8 weeks, and then building from that.

432
I load whenever. Especially with DT. the good thing about DT is also the bad thing, the length of time for reviewing.

The good thing about this is you can upload whenever, and it locks your place in the queue. So a month later, just add keywords and you are approved or rejected within a few hours. I have a stack in line, and when I get the time at DT, just log in and release a few.

With SS, it does not seem to matter. Lately they have been a bit slower than usual, so I always try to make sure I have something waiting in line.

With Istock, well ... they continue to reject everything I load anyways.

General Stock Discussion / Re: Cover ot TIME MAGAZINE
« on: June 09, 2008, 15:10 »
2 things really come home to me reading this thread.

1. The cheek of Time magazine not so much to use a stock photo on their cover, but to SELL the cover. I would imagine this is taking it way to far.

2. Why I would never upload images with a model, family member or not, to a microstock company. The stuff I limit to micro is everyday stuff that is basically only good for websites, or a little advertisement, or a PowerPoint demo. If I were you guys with access to models and good studio equipment, I would only send that to a macro or mid macro. At least you get a few bucks, and the model may even be able to get some credit.

Microstock for me is:

at the end of this month having enough cash from a few months of sales to buy an Alien Bee ringflash and battery pack.

Then I can produce better images. As a result I can then start to load to Alamy. I can then make some better margins.

Dreamstime.com / DT keyword issue
« on: June 07, 2008, 23:27 »
I suggested to DT that copying the keywords of a file not your own might be a good idea.

I got an answer back to check another forum post where a photographer and DT staff said it was considered stealing.

Personally, I have a real issue with this. You can easily log into CanStockPhoto and use their keyword tool if you are really stuck for ideas.

Some dude puts in his login into to his keywords to check if someone is stealing them. I just think this is weird to the extreme.

Fact is people search by keywords, not the talent.

What do the rest of you think? You have heard my opinion, i reckon the English language is free of copyright.

leave my hat alone you cranky bugger.

It could be worse, I could be showing my alien shaped head.

From my very limited (3 years) experience in micro, I understand the frustration some people on this forum are displaying.

I believe a lot of it has to do with the difference in cultures.

There are a few companies that have a very authoritarian approach to managing their talent while others are more "Westernised" and do not have an issue with dissent.

The reality is we are in a business environment.

Most of the problems do not exist with the company itself, rather particular individuals in that company. A company is inanimate. It is the people that make up the company that makes it good or bad to deal with.

From my experience here I have found it better and more productive to complain to their management about particular behaviours of particular individuals, rather than the broad brush approach.

At the start I had issues with a few individuals at DT, who had very poor communication and English skills.

But I believe this is in the past.

Fotolia is no different from any of the others. They all have benefits, and they all have a downside.

Like Canstock. Man the sales are so slow, but they have a great keyword tool that I use a lot.

I do not have a great issue with FT at all, except their rejections lately, and I guess they are moving in another direction, we just have not figured it out yet.

439
I don't shoot people because I do not have any studio gear for that. Hopefully I will eventually so I can do time for print to get models.

Most my stuff is of products, or my hands etc.

It certainly has increased my skills as a photographer. And the benefit for me is I have gradually bought better gear from the income which currently just pays for my habit.

I also found it funny that a rock band had paid $1 for a photo for their CD cover and then had the nerve to complain about iTunes selling individual songs off the album "for a few cents".

For me the drama would be the lack of the "credit" not the money.

I have done a few front covers on assignment and got $450 each so the $ is not enough to make you rich.

Also, despite those front covers, I have never had another assignment job ...

They have some great stuff Leaf, I just find it frustrating not being able to get sales to increase there. Not sure what I am doing wrong.

I have doubled my portfolio size and halved my sales? Go figure.

Probably is Sharply. I just thought maybe others did not know about it. I have no issue with it, just wanted to let others know. In fact, I agree we should have to verify our real identities.

thats normal in germany you have to send a copy of your passport...

probably is in Europe. But it is new to Fotolia. Pretty sure it says "Government ID" since many of us do not own a passport or have need for one.

Just a heads up for everyone. I went to convert my earnings this morning and they now require you load a government ID in your profile before you get paid.

So better do it before you reach the payment criteria.

maybe they do blow up a tad more than 100%, or their monitors are better than mine ... which is a real possibility for me.

I purchased it but it is a bit annoying you can't download it. i thought it would be a pdf file.

Just wondering how you lot are going.

I saw a thread on another site where a guy had sold 60 odd images.
