Cameras / Lenses / Re: Buying Nikon 24-70mm f2.8
« on: March 13, 2008, 18:08 »
Have you bought that lens yet dotshock?  I've been considering buying one myself based on bjorn rorslett's analysis, but many observer's over at dpreview have expressed disappointment with image quality (softness as a result possibly of poor quality control).

Given the price I'd like to be sure before I make the purchase.

Any observations?

Hmmm.... that looks and sounds like a 15 word limit to me.

Ley me see if I've got this straight - this agency is rejecting whole batches of stuff from Lisafx and Lev Dolgachov who are two of the most successful stock photographers in the world.

They appear to have few customers and yet preach the 'holier than thou' stuff as if they are something of a leader in the industry.

Sounds to me as though someone has escaped from the cuckoo's nest.

StockXpert.com / Re: Impossible opt out
« on: March 12, 2008, 20:20 »
First day after cancelling subs and I've had five sales - 4 M and 1 XL.  Of course I'm wondering whether that XL would have been a sub, but I'll never know.

One day does not a trend make, but I suppose I'm at least relieved that sales didn't completely dive after opting out.

If I recall Alamy's recent financial results video correctly (warning - old brain and unreliable memory) they said that 70% of their sales are editorial.  Yes, that's 70%.

They sold 25 million of pics last year and have a five year target of selling 100 million annually.

StockXpert.com / Re: Impossible opt out
« on: March 11, 2008, 18:49 »
Yes, I've just opted out too.

I must say that I supported Steve and StockXpert when they launched subscriptions, and I believed the story that they were/are looking for a different type of customer.  However the proof of the pudding is that XL sales have mostly disappeared and have been replaced with subscriptions; as Lisafx says: sales are going up and income is going down.

I'll monitor what happens over the coming month.

BTW I do have a problem with the 'most popular' search at StockXpert which has such a massive emphasis on 'new' that it probably exceeds SS in this respect.  I dunno what others have seen, but in my portfolio a 'most popular' search places new images with zero downloads in front of established pictures with lots of downloads.  Whenever I look at it I think 'how on earth can a picture with zero downloads be more popular than an image with 40 sales'.  According to Steve the 'newness' factor reduces over a couple of months.

All in all this looks like a straight attempt to copy Shutterstock.

Shame.  StockXpert were make such good progress for me until recently.

Photoshop Discussion / Re: Photoshop Elements 5 Color Problem
« on: March 07, 2008, 16:48 »
Color management can sometimes be associated with your particular brand of monitor.  In my case I use a Samsung 940N which of course includes screen adjustment 'software' in order to get the best viewable results.  Whenever I open a file in PS it tells me that my file 'has an embedded color management profile' which suggests that the Samsung is adding something to the file so that it displays on screen in accordance with my monitor settings.

I always disable/reject the color management option for each file so that the embedded profile is removed.

Cameras / Lenses / Re: D300/D200 comparaison
« on: March 06, 2008, 20:44 »
I use my new D300 on neutral settings and sharpness set to 2.  Initial impression is that the pictures are sharper than the D200 at the same settings.

I haven't noticed any improvement in detail or color but then I always apply saturation in photoshop rather than in-camera.

All in all, I'd say the D300 gets the same or slightly better quality images at 12mp compared to the D200, but there is very little in it.

I'm using Lo1 iso which is equivalent to iso100.

Dreamstime.com / Re: DT subs model
« on: March 06, 2008, 18:01 »
I like DT.  I think they try to be professional and fair.

However the subs thing is undermining people's enthusiasm - most people think that subs make the agency money at the expense of the photographer.

My one criticism of DT is its constant rain of press releases that claim it 'pays the highest commissions to photographers'.  That claim might indeed be correct for credit sales, but conveniently overlooks the dilution effect of subs.

I am intrigued as to why a stock photo agency specialising in multicultural images should choose to call itself 'gogo'.

From Wikipedia:

Go go may refer to:

In music:

Go-go, a form of funk music that arose in the 1970s
The Go-Go's (1960s), a UK band
The Go-Go's, a 1980s American band
GO!GO!7188, a Japanese indie-rock band sometimes referred to as GoGo
"Go Go", a song by Galactic from Coolin' Off
In history and culture:

Gogo (ethnic group), or Wagogo, a Bantu ethnic group in central Tanzania
Gogo language, a Bantu language spoken by the Gogo people
Gogo (mayor of the palace), 6th-century Frankish mayor of the palace of Austrasia
Gogo, Burkina Faso, a department of the province of Zoundwogo in Burkina Faso
In science:

Gogo (genus), a genus of Ariid catfish
Gogo Formation, a limestone nodule in Australia
Gogo Fish, Gogonasus, a Devonian fish named for the limestone formation
In fictional characters:

Gogo (Final Fantasy), from the Super Nintendo role-playing games Final Fantasy V and VI
Gogo Dodo, from Tiny Toon Adventures
Gogo Yubari, from Kill Bill - Volume 1
Estragon, or Gogo, from Samuel Beckett's Waiting for Godot
Gogo Germain, from the 1958 film St. Louis Blues
In other uses:

GoGos, the original name of the children's game Crazy Bones

On the same subject there are TWO photo agencies that have chosen to call themselves 'gecko' for some unexplained reason, then there's another new one that is something like zymmetricle (but no-one will ever find it because the name is impossible to spell unless one has seen it first).

So many fat people around nowadays.

StockXpert.com / Re: StockXpert Announces Price Increase
« on: March 06, 2008, 14:56 »
Subscriptions at StockXpert and DT are a double edged sword - on the one hand you get an increasing number of sales that pay only 30c thus diluting earnings, but on the other hand if you opt out those sales are lost and that has an effect on the popularity ranking.

The clear answer is to exclude the larger sizes from subscription, but that will never happen unless Shutterstock makes the first move.

StockXpert seemed to be doing so well but the whole tone of the place has changed since subscriptions were introduced.

438
Great portfolio Andres.

Istock converts all thumbnails to sRGB.  XS and S purchases are supplied to clients as sRGB, and larger sizes as RGB (if available).

StockXpert.com / Re: StockXpert Announces Price Increase
« on: March 06, 2008, 03:19 »
Yeah, StockXpert and 123 are waiting to see what Shutterstock do.

But whatever happens, the gap between credit pricing and subscription rewards is widening rapidly and there is a swell of photographers reacting against the idea of subscriptions per se.

What's annoying is the way that Dreamstime and StockXpert lured photographers with the promise of 50% commissions then hit those same contributors with subscriptions once their libraries had reached 1 million.  This appears to have created a bad reaction and generated rather a scathing view of those agencies.

DT and StockXpert both have the potential to be excellent agencies, but the RISK is that they alienate the contributors who provide the products they need to sell.

While we all wait to see what happens with subscription commissions at SS in May, the gap between credit pricing and subscriptions at StockXpert will be too wide for customers to ignore.

Banknotes aren't copyright for photography puposes, but they are covered for reproduction under anti-conterfeit, terrorism and money laundering laws.

The basis rule is that a banknote should note be photographed or photocopied in its entirety or as a complete 'flat copy'.  Such a reproduction could assist counterfeiting.

You can submit as many banknote photographs to the microstock agencies as you wish so long as the entire notes are not visible.

The exception is the Malaysian Ringgit, which may not be reproduced in any form.

Similar laws apply to postage stamps, which can be photographed and reproduced so long as they have been franked.

Software - General / Re: Photoshop CS2 or CS3
« on: March 06, 2008, 01:43 »
I've used both and I wouldn't spend my own money to upgrade to CS3.  Try to find an inexpensive copy of CS2 and spend some time with it first, because its bound to be a whole different ballgame compared to photoshop 6.

123RF / Re: 123RF new prices and licenses
« on: March 05, 2008, 15:12 »
These prices are way too low and suggest (to me) that 123 doesn't aspire to become a bigger player.

Sometimes prices can be TOO low and results in inability to attract customers.  We've all been there - seen something advertised at such a low price that our initial reaction isn't 'oh great' but 'at that price there must be a catch or something wrong'.

These low prices coupled with 123's preoccupation with the idea that photographers should 'give away web images for free to attract business' runs the risk that 123 will simply be seen as the bucket shop of the microstock industry.

Pricing is about 'getting it right' - the right combination of price and quality.  Too low suggests junk.

And what's all this about a 9.7mp image being 'mega big'?  10mp is pretty well standard for any point and shoot.  30mp is 'mega'.  10mp is standard.  Their marketing people have got this wrong.

Not impressed.

An excellent tutorial as usual Miz.  Your efforts to educate us are much appreciated.

123RF / Re: 123RF new prices and licenses
« on: March 05, 2008, 00:18 »
Dan they are not quoting megapixels, but file sizes (uncompressed).

If you look up the uncompressed file size in photoshop or equivalent program you'll see that an approx 10 million megapixel file is about a 25 MB file size.

Why they've priced in file sizes rather than image sizes is beyond me, but there you are.

General Stock Discussion / Re: Downsampling Images
« on: March 03, 2008, 23:29 »
Ordinarily I don't reduce the size of any images submitted to any agency (including SS).  I submit full resolution.

Very occasionally I will reduce the size if I feel that quality or editing is 'borderline' and in these instances I use bicubic or bicubic smoother (like sharply) to reduce to 90% or 80%of original.  I've found that 'smoother' gives a more even tonal result than 'sharper' when downsizing.

StockXpert.com / Re: Non-Vector Price Adjustment
« on: March 03, 2008, 18:52 »
Opting out of subs appears to have been disabled.

Sadly, without a commensurate subs price increase, all this will do at StockXpert is drive more and more customers to subscription.

449
Nice to see so much excitement here - but be aware that Shutterstock's subscription and search algorithm model condenses long term sales into short term sales; in other words files can do very well for a month or two but then sales will dry up.  You have to keep the beast alive with new uploads on a regular basis.

Whereas with agencies such as IS, DT and possibly FT a file can generate an income for four or five years, with SS all of those future sales happen in a month or two due to the mad rush by subscribers to maximise their monthly image allowances.

SS is great for a short term rush of adrenalin, but its a poor long term investment.

If you stop uploading for a couple of months your sales will drop dramatically - by 70% or more.

iStockPhoto.com / Re: Best match woes...
« on: March 02, 2008, 16:57 »
Also last week the 'newness' element of the best match equation was changed to give newer files a higher placement in search results.

This 'newness' component changes four or five times each year, which is why you'll see remarks like "Oh, it's nice to see some of my old files selling again" or "Why do my new files not get any views or sales?".
