Pond5 / Re: Video - Pricing at Pond5
« on: June 11, 2015, 01:03 »
Absolutely agree on the price floor, but that ain't gonna happen because P5 is focusing on  small markets and small buyers.
There is hardly any presence of them in the UK, Canada, Australia ...  :o

Some MSG members never post any thread nor comment and only do + and - voting.
I suspect some even work for the agencies and they try to protect them of bad shout out.

I don't see much value in it, but whatever majority decides, I am ok.   :)

MSG is called a democracy because power resides not in a few people but in the majority of our members.  8)

Canva / Re: Canva raises $6 million
« on: June 10, 2015, 02:09 »
Pond5 also got huge funding a year ago...and we haven't seen much change/improvement there, apart from swanky new NY office and new Directors, VPs, CXX titles deployment ...
P5 sales are going down, so no guarantee that funding brings success to all. Ok, maybe to founders ....

Time will tell! 8)

Congrats to Canva!

People also need to charge what their product is worth and to run it as a business, cover all costs plus labor and equipment life cycle replacement and then price the product accordingly.

Contributors who are out of "western" world ask for less money for their product because they can go long way with it. It would be interesting to reveal from which territories cheaper pricing comes? I guess South America, ex Eastern Europe ....

Q for Jonathan, dealwork question you gave us answer was asked on January 23rd, more than 5 months ago!!! Why such delay?

Off Topic / Googles own private CCTV
« on: May 29, 2015, 03:25 »
You have to be afraid of those close to your that have Android devices.
The seemingly normal action of taking a picture at a private party is now Googles own private CCTV network in action. Photos will be uploaded automatically to Googles cloud, analysed and categorised. Even if you choose not to use any of their services, they will be able to build a profile of you, based on photos and videos your friends take of you.

This month, painter and photographer Richard Prince reminded us that what you post is public, and given the flexibility of copyright laws, can be shared and sold for anyone to see. As a part of the Frieze Art Fair in New York, Prince displayed giant screenshots of other peoples Instagram photos without warning or permission. According to Vulture, nearly every piece sold for $90,000 each.  :o

She tried to explain that she was only using the image temporarily until she could get permanent ones, quickly excused herself saying she had other deliveries to make and drove off. At the time I chalked it up to sheer ignorance, but a few weeks (and a few more delicious food orders) later it was still nagging at me so I searched her name online. I knew the catering thing was not her full time job but I was absolutely floored when I found out what her real job was. It turns out she was a graphic designer/photographer with a government department here! Someone who absolutely definitely positively knew what she was doing when she lifted the image and used it commercially. The most infuriating thing about it though is now all of the images on her site have been replaced with her own photography and in clear bold lettering "All photography on this site Copyright 2015. All rights reserved".

Wow! What a story.
I can't believe she didn't offer to pay at least some money out of courtesy. Cheeky cow.

This is the most productive/useful thread ever on MSG.
Supporting each other is the key.

The point is (as many expressed) P5 sales are going down and let's focus on that rather than how crap I happen to be.
And of course, thanks for your friendly advise, gcrook.

So, yeah Pond5 seems to have screwed the pooch on this keyword thing, or suddenly all the buyers have been abducted by aliens.

Pond5 seems to have screwed a lot of things lately but i doubt whether keywords is one of these things.
Unfortunately there are other more serious problems such as the huge issue of the price search in the associated files (4K+HD) .

Oh well...it's been said a month ago on their own forums - http://www.pond5.com/community?forum=629&thread=43147176&lp=1

Meanwhile P5 is busy promoting free files! -  :o  (super tasteless marketing on display) https://www.facebook.com/pond5/posts/10153315909054777

P5 is no different than the others, top tier included! You give them wings to grow, then they do whatever they want to do but to help you grow too.

Us shouting here doesn't help much.  :-\

P5 is a great idea but sadly got bad execution and P5 management sux too.

Pond5 / Re: Pond5 Introduces: Automatic Keyword Tagging
« on: May 12, 2015, 04:06 »
How do you turn off the feature in P5?

You don't have to actually turn anything off, just don't use any of the suggested keywords if you don't want to.

Why you investing time and money into something that nobody wants to use? Why not investing in sales that everyone cries about?  :-\

Good entry from P5 forums:

Don't count on Pond5 fixing this problem. If they really wanted to fix this it would have been done the first week everyone began throwing a fit. At this point they send the occasional person to the forums to say that a fix is in the works to appease the contributors. They are hoping that given enough time people will forget about the problem and they will have successfully forced people to price 4k far below the going rate. I'm so fed up with Pond5 and their complete lack of care for their contributors. The only reason people are still contributing here is because up until recently they were very successful at selling our content. Now the forums are loaded with threads about how they are not having any sells. Pond5 had better be very careful. If their sales continue to drop people will not be willing to help them out like they are at Revostock. There's a company that understands communication and cares about their contributors. I can put up with low sales and hard times. I won't put up with the way Pond5 treats its contributors.

2) Reviewers really have reject targets, two of them confiremd this to me. So in fact its easier to simply accept everything and then reject to fill the quota and you save a LOT of the time.

3) Unless agencies quit this crap behaviour causing me substantial loss of time, I will resubmit the same images again and again. I will not bother complaining at forums or posting questions to support - it never works. Simply minor change and resubmit. This is especially true on SS, but also Pond is now rejecting photos like mad.

Well said! Shocking about targets and so true about complaining doesn't work! (http://www.microstockgroup.com/members-only-discussion/my-recent-experience-with-pond5-never-ever-using-them-again/msg415185/#msg415185)

« on: May 04, 2015, 11:52 »
the last shoot i went to do for stock, hence totally on spec, the parking fee alone was $7.50 for a couple of hours, not to mention my time and equipment blah blah blah, it makes no sense to me to have to sell one photo from that shoot 20- 30 times just to pay for the parking.

I most businesses you are doing fine if you can break even in a couple of years.

Last year, I went in Canada, mainly for fun but also to attend a SS conference. Today, all my trip expenses are paid back (hotel, transport, parking, food) through all these microstock micro-sales. I'm making a profit for every photo taken back then and sold today for $0.38

Worried for $7.50? Why would people expect overnight payback from microstock more than in other businesses?

I think you might be missing the point here.

Only parking was $7.50 as an example that 20-30 sales on one site would break even on that one expense alone. Don't forget to add in your travel and shoot time lets say 3 hours @ $10 per hour = $30 (a silly low wage). Post production upload time 1 hour @ $10 per hour, 2 hours if you are uploading to multiple sites.  Camera expense, computer expense, internet expense, software expense, electricity expense, rent expense, etc we can just call that around  a ridiculously low minimum of $5,000, don't forget to add the gas expense, the car insurance etc.
So you need to make at least $5047 just to break even, but really need to make at least $6000 ++ before taxes, and you have not even eaten yet. even at the so called average RPD i keep hearing about at at SS of around 0.77 that is still 6500 downloads. even on my RPD on IS as exclusive of around $10 that is still 541 downloads from just that one shoot to break even.

if you can turn a profit in one year on a trip to canada which is not cheap and most certainly more expensive than my drive downtown, then perhaps you'd like to share your secret cause i really don't get your math at all.

OK ...so what's THE SOLUTION, Shudderstock?

Scott and others always said that the price point and royalties where balanced and that customers seem to appreciate the pricing. They wouldn't give us a raise or increase prices they thought they had the right balance. A few weeks back they raised prices but not royalties. And now they give 28 million to a person who already has 1.2B$.

Everyone can draw their own conclusions from that.

Very true... plus customers have no idea who is getting how much from this game, and they clearly don't care as long as they get good product or service.

...and then comes this Job advert for Copywriter!  :o

http://www.indeed.com/job/wizard-words-k-copywriter-0d6bbb3051b51712

About us: ... We're an incredibly creative group of film-makers, photographers, musicians, burlesque dancers and circus performers - we bring creativity to work with us and apply it to everything we do. Oh, and we have a strong work ethic. We get sh*t done.

  :o  :o  :o

In a million light years could anyone explain me the connection between circus performer/burlesque dancer with microstock, apart from them being models of course.
Do they have any Programmer, Developer or these guys don't matter at all!!!  :o

P5 is really desperate for that "we are so cool, different and creative" bs.
Such a crap PR!

P5 is a great idea but has a bad execution and management.
