I would also presume that designers are courted to and are members at certain sites that appeal to them for whatever differentiating reasons are important to them. Every site is trying to carve out its own niche for both photographers AND designers / buyers.
I have often tried finding my own pictures (and I know what I'm looking for ...) through the various search engines and it can be difficult to sort through hundreds if not thousands of similar images to find exactly what you are looking for on the larger sites. Once you find it (no matter what site your on ...) what are the odds that your going to search again? You might if you have multiple accounts. I imagine you would if you have a subscription account somewhere ... but what if you don't?
Oh ... by the way ... how many images are on other sites that have never been approved by the likes of IS or Shutterstock ?
All of these are reasons as to why it makes sense to be on Featurepics for the long term ...

Adelaide,
Thanks for your feedback. I realize that other sites have collection or gallery type of features but it appears that featurepics has something novel here and that is someone can actually purchase an entire collection of yours through their interface. You also have the ability to offer the entire collection (15 minimum?) at a % discount.
I would still like to know if there is anyone who has actually sold one of these types of featurepics specific collections ...

Leaf,
I'm going to register and check-out mostphotos. I put you down as a referral if it takes in their system as I had already typed in "mostphotos.com" without a referral link from you.
It did have a field on their registration form where I could put in your id so I hope you get the credit ..

From everything I have read on the various forums, "Microstock" photographers are starting to get tired and fed up of being paid subscription model pricing commissions for their work. That being said ... There are those designers and other buyers that will "shop around" for cheaper pricing (those that have the time), but its been said many times all over the forum that the designer doesn't care if the price is $1, 5, or even $10 if its what they need to use for their project. That being said ... Any site that is new or not, and helps push pricing up up so that an equitable share can be shared with the photographer as well as support their marketing efforts to increase their business, should be supported. That being said ... While Crestock may not be there yet ... if they support higher pricing, can build their client base inspite of the competition, and ultimately increase commissions to maintain its contributor base ... they just might have a chance of surviving Just my two cents worth ... $.82 / image average at DT based on my first 8 sales there ... 2 of those were sold for $ .30 each (sub sale)
Respectively here is how the distribution looked as I was keeping track:
$.30 (2 dls) $.50 (3 dls) $1.00 (1 dls) $1.50 (1 dls) $2.00 (1 dls)
Also I got $5.00 that I'm not sure what it was for ... possibly the referral bounus or the editorial image thing ...

What kind of successes (or failures) with Featurepics Collection feature? Is it worth the time and effort?

I now have 93 approved images at FP without a sale. I previously had my pricing set a $6.00 RF+Extension allowing resizing and have now lowered to $4.00 with resizing in order to try and prime the pump on this site for me ... I have also put some snippets on a blog of mine and we'll see if that drives any traffic there. I really like this site so I hope to make some sales soon Mark

Adelaide,
If you don't mind me asking, are you still trying to get into shutterstock since I didn't see it in your stats?
If so what application are you on? I will be soon submitting my fourth application. This will be the first time that I downsize my images to 4mp as suggested ...

I'm really new at crestock, but i am a bit worried.. no dl's at all. and very very few views...
well, given that its prices are higher than almost elsewhere, I'd stick around for a while, upload in your spare time when you don't have anything to upload anywhere else, wait and see what happens, give it some time to cycle through a season or two... and then either get out or stay
I myself just joined not too long ago, and i'll give it a few months. After which it'll be either all or nothing. Cuz uploading to so many sites is just not worth the time and effort...
ChasingMoments I like the way your thinking. Perhaps I'll try uploading the 140 or so images that have been approved elsewhere that I haven't at CS since I stopped uploading after only 4 approvals months ago. If they are charging higher prices, perhaps some of that will ultimately be passed on with comission raises in the future after their marketing efforts start to payoff. Plus ... I've been fortunate enough to travel to Sweden once Jag Heter Mark

Wow - whats up at FT? Normally don't get many rejections.
Just had six rejected for 'non-conformity', does this look so bad for stock?

I can't believe your photo was rejected ... I'm about ready to give up submitting to FT (I've REALLY been trying to look past the fact that it has one of the most tedious upload systems around) I know I'm new, but I'm not that bad (but its sure starting to feel that way with whoever their new reviewers must be ).... 42 rejections since my last actual photo was approved. Hi Guys,
Mark - I did respond to your inquiry via email, did you not receive it? In a nutshell, around the time you made your specific uploads we had to reset the servers as they were getting hammered by a bad robot from somewhere in Asia- after installing some new security methods (which required rebooting the servers), things are good to go again. If you were in process of uploading during that time the files definitely wouldn't have been received.
Gary - Things are very much accelerating, if you look at the photo pages you will see dozens are being added daily. In fact just yesterday we started training our first new photo editor. Each photo approval takes X amount of time by a trained professional to evaluate, and we have DVD's, uploads, and Hard drives full of content coming in daily .. and there is no way we are going to cut corners on quality.
Sbonk - There are only 3 states for the files: Waiting, Rejected, Approved. Approved submissions are no longer submissions but live files, so they go to the Art Manager page. I will check it out and try to find this error message you mention.
Zymmetrical Thanks for your response. I found your email in the junk folder and have now marked it as "not spam." Thank you for your efforts. I was able to view my submissions as the error is no longer there. Thanks ! I will also start uploading once again the images that might have been lost during the server reset and seey how it goes. So far I like what I've seen from all of the features on your website so please keep up the great development work ! Mark

I've been also getting "Module Load Warning One or more of the modules on this page did not load. This may be temporary. Please refresh the page (click F5 in most browsers). If the problem persists, please let the Site Administrator know."
when trying to go into the "queued submissions" area where it shows 8 files but I've uploaded far more than that which have goine into a void so it seems ...
I'm a little concerned and won't try uploading any further until I hear back from support who I've emailed with the problems.
It is still in Beta after all ...

Thanks for the advice Whiz. From what I've heard on various forums, reducing to 4mp images on Shutterstock helps the approval process quite a bit ... This will be my first time doing it and I hope it works since I'll be on my 4th application. Here are the following changes: Updated: Added #1 "Strength Security Freedom" Updated: Added #6 "Valentine Heart with Copy Space" (I've heard having an illustration or two never hurts) My suggestee Shutterstock Application List and links to samples: All, I'm looking for critique help here with my proposed images (that have been approved elsewhere) that I plan to submit in my next Shutterstock application. I will post their links here and delete or add appropriately due to feedback received here on this forum. I greatly appreciate anyone's comments regarding whether or not an image I plan to submit or not will meet shutterstock's criteria and standards for my next application. Here is the latest version of my proposed submission list: Approved at FT & DT #1 "Strength Security Freedom" http://www.dreamstime.com/strength-security-freedom-...-image3580111 Approved at DT (2 sales): #2 "Solar Energy is the Future of Electric Power" http://www.dreamstime.com/solar-energy-is-the-future-of-electric-power-image3954344Approved at FT & DT (2 sales): #3 "Seattle Skyline with Sailboat" http://www.dreamstime.com/seattle-skyline-with-sailboat-image3925685Approved at : #4 Approved at FT & DT: #5 "Isolated Hand with Scars with Key v1" http://www.dreamstime.com/isolated-hand-with-scars-with-key-v1-image3709441Approved at FT: #6 "Valentine Heart Outline with Copy Space" http://us.fotolia.com/id/5967912Appoved at DT: #7 Approved at FT & DT: #8 "Modern Urban Buildings" http://www.dreamstime.com/modern-urban-buildings-v1-image4073105#9 #10 Your Critique of the photos on this list for my next Shutterstock Application is greatly appreciated ! All of my suggested photos will be reduced in size to 4megapixel prior to submission. I do wonder if this had been done on some of the rejected submissions in the beginning if it would have made a difference ... I really need to get into SHUTTERSTOCK ! SHUTTERSTOCK OR BUST ! Mark

I'm not sure ... but I think I just got a $5.00 referral on Dreamstime (DT). I can't otherwise account for $5.00 in my earnings ...
I've also had some incremental $$$ coming in from 123rf that shows as referral earnings I believe ...
Other than that, I'm new to referrals so I just don't know what sort of income to anticpate from referrals.
Is there anyone that is willing to share their insights into their personal successes with referrals?

After having my first sale at BigStock in December, I followed that up with ZERO sales for all of January. I closed out January with 74 approved images at BigStock with another 13 pending.
In contrast to BigStock for January ... I had Best Month Evers (BMEs) at: DT (32 images) FT (32 images) 123rf (115 images)

I actually went off a little bit on FT a couple of months ago in an email to them. Between the hours of 11 and 5 (EST) I had a 10% approval ratio. Everything reviewed outside of that time frame had about and 85-90% acceptance ratio. The discrepancy even included images from the same batches. I made a very polite (if you believe that) suggestion that they make sure their reviewers were on the same page and that anyone rejecting photos arbitrarily to clean up his backlog be dealt with in a stern manner. Don't know if they really paid any attention, but my rejections have been somewhat more consistent and predictable in the last month or so.
I can attest to this as well ... The majority of my submissions to Fotolia are submitted in 11pm - 2am EST since I am on the West Coast of the US. Perhaps it is the "night shift" who is responsible for the unusual amount of rejections ... Mark

Crap. I just had about 20 images rejected w/o a single approval ... 45 still pending. I hope that isn't the norm as I've had just about enough of that kind of action the way Fotolia has been heading recently ...

The "Fave" feature increases in proportion to the size of your portfolio (I believe its 5% since I'm just around 100 images approved there)
I am hoping to confirm that it goes higher after I get up to say 125 or 150 images.
I think its a great feature !
