Are the buyers having to jump through all of these hoops?

Because if so they wont be looking for any images with all of the hoops that will be in their way!

Been one hell of a maintenance upgrade.

Same chart posted on SS late last night and probably related to Yuri leaving.

Look at when the drop started, right when Yuri left.

When Yuri left the traffic at SS left as well and probably why people with the Yuri type ports are complaining of piss poor sales and those without the Yuri style ports are hooting and hollering Yay!

Charts and graphs don't ☺

On SS and many other sites the only editing allowed to be done to EDITORIAL is to crop or make an exposure adjustment!

It must remain the way it was shot at the time you shot it and those are the rules.

Quote
Image Manipulation:

Editorial images should never be digitally altered. Scaling and cropping slightly is acceptable (sometimes you must crop a newsworthy editorial image), but you should never add or remove elements to make an image sell more, such as adding smoke at a protest or removing background elements.

What you could do simply in a darkroom is generally acceptable with Photoshop. However, changing key elements of the image to your advantage is not ethical. The best editorial image is the full frame image. If you must crop it, the message of the image must not change at all.  It is of utmost importance to maintain the editorial integrity of the image in every way.

The SS database now contains almost 27 million images, and added over 108,000 this week.  What proportion of those images gets downloaded every day?   Pretty low and decreasing.  When I started only 4 years ago the database was around 4 million images, now they add more than 5 million every year.  Many of the new ones now are from former iS exclusives with excellent portfolios that we haven't had to compete with previously on SS.  The rate of increase in the database is faster than any individual contributor so our portion will always decrease.  I think this is the cause of the variation some people are seeing and it will only get worse as the database gets larger.  At the current rate of increase the database will have over 40 million images in less than 4 years - how will our sales be then?  Will demand for images double in 4 years?  Maybe, but I doubt it.  SS currently is the sales leader, which encourages everyone to submit there and recommend it to others.  This increases the size of the database - great for the agency and for buyers, not so good for individual contributors.  Greater variability and declining sales for individual contributors is a statistical inevitability.  Ride the wave while you can but don't be surprised when it crashes.

(Of course, contributors may drop out as revenue declines, eventually leading to an equilibrium, but we still have a way to go for that)

BTW, my sales have been steady with a slight increase over the past year, although there are huge daily swings in numbers of DLs and particularly ODDs.  I try to only look at monthly averages and long-term trends - anything else is statistical noise.  If you're seeing large long-term decreases then my guess is that you may have had a niche all to yourself that now has been found (or copied) by others.
Now go post this on the SS forums and see what they have to say.

The SS forum is OK but I don't think we can talk as freely over there
You have got to be kidding right?

You can get away with a lot more over there then you ever will here unless you are one of the special paid members who get away with more because they help to support the site.

I got banned from here for over a month for asking a simple question and the other involved party got less then a week ban because they special and they are a paid member.

I saved all of the deleted posts before Tyler deleted them.

You again?

Don't you know you cant help to make anyone understand what is going on?

They have all read the same thing and even though it came form ADMIN they still dont believe it and continue on with their Doom and Gloom posts.

OK continue on I made my visit to the Zoo for the day.

Maybe because it doesn't say there's a boost for new images? Instead it says the opposite, that accuracy is more important than upload date.

In some instances, a more accurate search result will take slight precedence over upload date, but the search experience for customers will be greatly improved.  As a result, it will be less likely to find irrelevant images under the New sort order, but applying accurate metadata to your images remains critical.

Not "tweaking the new search favoring date of upload"?

And the other claim, yes they do live testing.

"At Shutterstock, we perform regular tests of small modifications to search. Those tests are typically released to limited segments of the overall customer population.

Sincerely,
Anthony Correia "

For some reason people make mountains out of mole hills. They do small tests on limited portfolios, now sweeping big changes that kill sales. And while upload date (which is NEWNESS counts it's not as heavily weighted as it was before.

We don't know what other 99 factors go into a search and can only guess. All these claims that somehow SS is fiddling with things and causing sales to drop is the opposite of the truth and pure conjecture. They tweak things to make for better sales. Now maybe that doesn't mean my sales will change or go up, but overall, it's about giving the buyers better results.

Are people against better results? Do the ones complaining want buyers to get irrelevant and worse results? Someone explain?

I have noticed a significant boost in the amount of downloads i have been getting since starting last week. I would say anywhere from 10-25%. So this explains why as they have tweaked the search for newer files to have a slightly better exposure. Since im fairly new on SS, all my files are new I guess. Im sorry for the older portfolios that is taking a hit from this but this is probably going to be an on going thing where they will be tweaking the search constantly.

June has got off to a disappointing start at SS for me. Volume of sales is down a bit but the main problem has been the type of sales. I'm still getting plenty of subs but ODD's, EL's and SOD's are significantly down from the norm which obviously has a big impact on earnings.

I can't say that I've noticed a boost for new images either. In my experience (over 8 years) getting new images to take off has never been more difficult than it is now. Those new images that are fortunate enough to gain early sales can gain traction very quickly ... but lots of other images disappear down the Newest sort-order before they are noticed.

Signed up for the trial as soon as it was announced then on the last night it was on sale I purchased it to go along with remask3 adjust5 which has good noise removal on it detail2 and 3 that I already have as well.

Submitted images using clarity with detail and adjust5 adjustments done and they are accepted and approved.

As with anything it is about how you use it.

Overuse and you will introduce noise and artifacts but minor changes are sweet.

For those shooting RAW you need to get a grip on exposure  and learn how to shoot jpg and nail the exposure because with the topaz products when you shoot jpg and nail the exposure you can really pull out some amazing detail and colors with minor adjustments.

We are talking microstock so why shoot RAW and spend tons of time making color adjustments just shoot jpg one shot nail it make a minor adjustment and move on seconds VS minutes.

Simply dont listen to or pay any attention to any one who is complaining sales are down.
Without out proof all it is is hearsay because there is no proof given to back it up.
One could say the same about people claiming sales are up.
True just a bunch of talk without offering up any proof.

One day they complain about piss poor sales and the next day they are having a BDE so who cares?

Do as fotografer said and change what you can.

We have no control or knowledge of how stocks sites operate or why they do what they do and it is not for us to know this or we would be working for them behind a desk in an office somewhere.

Didn't think so.

Sure, there are many things that are better than newspapers, but newspapers are often at hand when you need them.

And then can be used in quite an advanced way.
Fx the pages are not the same and the misture of black letters, images and white space can add to the quality of the reflection.
Not to mention if there is a colour photo on the page.
Plus they can be folded and such direct light from more than one direction.
This is also why there are things like white and black handkerchiefs.

And they can easily be carried in the camera bag and used in many way.

Improvise no matter what you have at hand you can probably use it to your advantage.

Jens you are fine.

There are others here that are well lets not say because they will start to cry.

475
Newspapers are probably the most used reflecors in photography at all times.
Jens you are trying to get through a brick wall that wont let you!☺
