iStockPhoto.com / Re: Third Party Reselling or Distribution Sales
« on: February 02, 2007, 05:48 »
I remember that Bill Gates owns Microsoft and Corbis (among others companies :) ).
Getty images owns Istockphoto... what a business... :D
Does corbis have a microstock subsidary.  Unusual if they dont as you thought William II would be in it.

Linking into microsoft office though has the potential to increase sales dramatically.  Not sure how it works and this is the key but I am sure that everyone is sick of seeing that studit office artwork that features in so many powerpoint presentations.  Hopefully I will start seeing my photos there in stead.

I need to ready it closely as it looks like the microsoft deal redirects the buyer to istock????

Adobe Stock / Re: Fotolia
« on: February 02, 2007, 03:53 »
In relation to total sales numbers, you have to remember that Fotolia is only 1 year old compared to istock which is about 5?? and started as a photosharing site, then 5c, then 10c, now 20c per DL (so the sales numbers aren't comparitive) and SS is a high volumn site due to its download model.

having said that, there is something fishy about thier total photos number.

But still, they are definately a top 5 site and worth being at.

I dont use the search fucntion as i am only a seller.

Fotolias would probably be better if everyone ranked their top 7 keywords as I understand it rates an image higher if the search hits a kyword in the top 7.  Not sure if this works in practice though but I do make sure my new photos have the keyworkds sorted correctly.

Maybe it is because i haven't disambiguated........ although I am starting to now.
Rumour has it that their search favours manually disambiguated photos so this might be why.  People like me with small portfolios (who have disambiguated) are probably taking sales from those with big portfolios who dont have the time to disambiguate.

I once bought a book on Lulu - 130 different ways to make Jello Shots.

It's not safe.

It is only unsafe if you add to much vodka and then have to many - the memories (or lack of memories should I say).

~ I notice once you receive a payout all details of images previously downloaded are forgotten a pity.
I noticed this too.  Very annoying.

18% shutterstock
21% fotolia
25% istockphoto
16% dreamtime
 6% bigstockphoto
 9% 123RF
 1% Canstock
 3% StockXpert
 1% Featurepics
 1% LuckyOliver
 0% Galastock

3rd best month ever which isn't to bad since i haven't uploaded in the past 3 months.

For the first time ever, SS in no longer in the top 2.  This also means I have to start uploading to istock , against my will, since they are selling a lot more for me with less photos.

123rf is very consistant and is now definately in front of StockXpert which has started to slow down a lot for me.  I have given up on GS and CS but am still hanging in there with LO.

Disappointing month for everyones favourite under - FP - aswell.

« on: February 01, 2007, 08:04 »
Edit: I take that back, I just checked again,   everything on the first page "popularity" has sold, but not in order of date of sale or quantity of DL's...
Popularity is DL/time on site multiplied by a random number (they do make an adjustment to elimiate the new photo effect).

Cameras / Lenses / Re: New canon camera rumors
« on: February 01, 2007, 04:36 »
I wonder what the long term prospects are for the 1.6x crop factor cameras? Will these sensors be able to reliably support 12+MP in the future?
If they can fit 10mp into a P&S sensor, then the 1.6 crop size is safe.

As further proof, I am guessing there will be a new EF-s lens at the PMA (pure speculation but they need to start building up this line of lens if they are going to target the consumer market).

iStockPhoto.com / istock keyword rejection question
« on: January 31, 2007, 10:00 »
I have just been rejected the second time on the same image for irrelevant keywords.  The first time I accept I may have left a few in there.  The second time I definately didn't (there was less than 10 tags left).

I think what I am doing wrong is removing irrelevant tags but leaving the irrelevant keywords there (with no tags).  Is this my problem? Do i have to delete the tags as well as the keywords!!

Are they doing this to make it harder to reactivate irrelevant keywords once the photo is accepted.

I saw this the other day, but I didn't know it was new.

I dont think it is new, just undiscovered (it has been around since November atleast which is when I started using it).

I dont have a problem with it.  However, i beleive we should get 33% of the actual sale price, not BigStock cut.

Cameras / Lenses / Re: New canon camera rumors
« on: January 30, 2007, 14:46 »
I dont beleive they will split the 5D into two at this stage.  The market is too small and the low spec will just take sales away from the high spec.

My view only.

General Stock Discussion / Re: New Image Format
« on: January 30, 2007, 07:22 »
well it might not be so dumb to convert your files to dng when you import them as i think the dng will be supported a lot long than for example the D30 files of canons first DLSR, or the current 1dsMarkII for that matter. (as all cameras have their own raw file format)

That is Adobe reason.  however, there are arguements that you may loss some data on the conversion etc so it not truely RAW.  Does that matter if all programs can read DNG butcant read your CR2 file??

An all Adobe solution doesn't sound bad while Adobbe is at the top of the heap but I know Apple is a bit reluctant to use it.

DNG also uses loseless compression which would be nice on the harddrive!

Microstock News / Re: Adobe Lightroom 1.0 to make it's debut
« on: January 30, 2007, 07:18 »
the only fear with imatch categories is after 10 years and thousands or millions of images catagorized, and perhaps imatch quits updating their program or change their process... all my work will be lost.

It is a problem when we become software dependant.

Where I use to work used lotus 123 in the old days.  We still had the files but they didn't open very nicely on excel.  Lotus 123 use to be the main spreadsheet program so microsoft "built in" conversion software.  That might not happen with smaller software companies.

That is why I reluctantly feed the beast and normally go with the big companies - i. use IE, Office, photoshop rather than the alternatives.

looks like they are playing the Google game and trying to increase their ratings on google.

Just beware the Google shuffle (when they change their serach method and previoius numbers 1's disappear - it has destroyed many internet businesses).

I am going to wait for CS3.

However, one of the main things I didn't like about LR they have fixed in the final version.

General Stock Discussion / Re: New Image Format
« on: January 29, 2007, 16:18 »
Talking about standised image formats, does anyone use DNG.  I have read a few things on it but most of the real positive stuff is a Adobe publication.  Sounds like it isn't perfect but better than standard RAW.

471
The sites might not like it as most require the owner to be the photographer.

If you had it as a company, then that company could be transfered.

I think someone tried to sell their LO account once.

Software - General / Re: Microsoft Release New Photo Info tool
« on: January 27, 2007, 18:12 »
uploaded 10 to SS and 15 to StockXpert

One failure at SS and it didn't remove duplicates - not a problem for SS but notices when I saw how long my keyword list was at StockXpert

473
What is dual stabilisation?

Why do they persist with xD cards.  Everyone knows they are inferior to SD.

I think CJ mentioned that there is IPTC freeware out there. I work on a mac, and would love something nifty that will take out the pain of keywording. Does anyone know of anything?

Microsoft just released a new one (oops you are on apple).

Dont know any for apple.  Does iphoto do it.  Appeture should if you can afford that?

I have used pixvue but am going to try the new microsoft one.
