Before I retired 15 years ago I made 250,000.00 plus per year as a wedding photographer. I had 10 photographers working for me. So the money is there always has been and always will be.
But not selling RF images for .25 Cents each. Needless to say I do not need the money from RF sales.

Microstock keeps wannabe photographers away from where the real money is - I see no problem with this  ::)

Every microstocker I know (who are doing it for a living) shudders at the idea of doing weddings. That's what many of them used to do and they are so glad to give it up.

You can certainly make decent money doing weddings but that's because it's a horrible job, that mostly has to be done during anti-social hours, that any half-decent photographer would gladly do anything else instead if they could get the same money. Same with having commercial clients. Who needs all that hassle __ the ever-changing briefs, chasing the money, dealing with the unwashed masses of the public, etc, etc?

That is why I hired photographers to do the work. I ran the studio and collected the money. Lived well and spent my spare time in the woods shooting wildlife in Montana while my studio was in New York. Just because your in the business does not mean you personally have to do the dirty work.

Just having fun in Montana.

-Larry

Wow you are in Montana jizz!!!
You have opportunity to be the one of the first mans putted in orbit of the Earth without expensive paying visit to international Space Station like newborn geeks if Yellowstone pimple explode.
I am not scientist and dont now to calculate if this explosion will paste you face on Moon too. Maybe you will be the first Microstocker on the Moon like fly on car window. LoL

Sorry I dont want to offend you anyhow, just try to be humorous in my morbid creepy way.

Third BME for me, after Sept and October of 09.

It was up 21% on February, and up 8% on March last year.  To be honest, I would have liked to see more than 8% growth in a year, since I have added 20% to my portfolio, but the loss of StockXpert does not appear to have been made up by the others, at least in my case.

Compared to March last year, big winner for me seems to be Fotolia which is up 58%.  Shutterstock and DT both gained around 10% and IS stayed pretty much dead even, with a gain of less than 1%.

I cant belive Lisa produced her fist exploding graph.  ;D
Nothing personally, keep you on good work...

Software - General / Re: Dynamic Photo HDR
« on: March 25, 2010, 08:51 »
i enjoy doing dynamic range photography . and also play alot with the shad/hi
in PS for non hdr images.

but i would never submit these images to IS. that would be suicidal. as you're sure to get a barrel of rejections due to overprocessed.
otoh, i would send the busload of them to SS who crave these sort of over saturation.

one caution though. if you 're doing people, i would stay away from ext dyn.
not unless you're the type who prefer red shadows  ;D

Belive or not this is HDR image

Photoshop Discussion / Re: Photoshop CS5 - Launching April 12
« on: March 24, 2010, 18:09 »
I only know that all non par or odd number versions from Adobe pack are too buggy like they wrote software for the first time.
eg. Illustrator 5, 7, 9, cs1 and cs 3
also photoshop 5  (5.5 version is OK), 7, 9 and CS 1 (I don try CS3 but I think it was screwed to because CS4 is for now)
From this validity and if I buy new Mac (it only depends if my old will bee dead) I will wait CS 6 version.
For now CS2 is OK.

One time I find free open source application which generates 3 pseudo RAW files from One Raw file shoot and final result is that there are NO noise. But I cand find it again  >:(
With that you can make HDR from moving subjects because it is only one shoot.
I cant remember if its for Linux only or other OS too.
Anybody hear something about it?

iStockPhoto.com / Re: Shorter review times

I think that the bad weather in this period of year is reason why lots of outside snappers dont have new images to upload while number of reviewers are the same.

Off Topic / Re: Kiva.org Loans
« on: March 19, 2010, 18:45 »
Of course they have to charge interest rates higher than the bank asks them, so they can cover their costs.

Anyhow if they desperate need to cover their cost under few percent under shark loans depend in which country I dont want to lend my money without any interest. I need to cover my cost too e.g. In first transaction bank or payment processor will grab few percent just for transaction and for withdraw too.
If Kiva or other wanabee benefactors cant offer lenders few percent of interest to cover lenders costs it is not place for me.
Maybe selfish from my side but for me it seems more selfish from Kiva and others...

I will prior to give money as gift e.g. buy lunch for kids in Africa or some similar program but not to Kiva with that conditions.
I just wonder how they personal earnings are. It looks that they have about 10.000$ per month while average earnings in that country is about 1 or few $ a day and they are acting a miracle from the sky...

OK, it is official.... I am ready to "Open Up My Options"... So here is my question... When I drop my exclusivity contract with iStockPhoto.com, what are the repercussions? (What am I giving up?)

Also, if I drop my exclusivity status with ISP, can I immediately apply to other sites with the same portfolio that I currently offer at ISP?

Thanks so much, this forum has proven to be a real help!

When you drop you exclusive status on IS you are free to spread all you work (included all rejected from IS) to other sites.
So for ShuterStock you need to send there 10 different images.
For DreamsTime you can send 1 or more without any stupid review.
Feel free to join FREE microstock...

Hello everyone. I have grown increasingly frustrated with iStockPhoto and I am considering leaving them for someone else.

I have been with iStockPhoto.com for 5 years now and I have been a contributor for the past few years. Recently the interest in some of my stock illustrations has peeked and has me becoming more focused on my Stock "career". The frustration with iStock is that the very images that sell the best for me are the same ones they reject virtually every time. Once I receive the rejection notice, I then have to contest the rejection notice, which usually results in iStockPhoto deciding to accept the image. The problem with this process is that I can submit dozens of images per week, but only contest 3 per month.

Long story short, I am looking for feedback on other Stock sites who may be easier to deal with and still yield good sell-through.
Here is a link to my work: http://www.istockphoto.com/colecom

Thanks for your feedback!

I really dont understand how someone can catch up on exclusive programe on istok in that early stage.
In you place I will break this devil contract with istok and take finally big free breath without any limits.
As other in post above suggest you sign up on first 5 or 6 sites and disperse all rejected works to them, ou account on iStok will be active but I think that you will earn more than now.
You will be loose some minor %revenue as exclusive at iStock but other sites will compensate you much more.

Off Topic / Re: Kiva.org Loans
« on: March 18, 2010, 22:35 »
I think Kiva or other landing sites are not good.
Maybe Kiva alone as concept is good but pawn savings companies under Kiva umbrella.
So any person from 2nd or 3th part dont look at this loan gentle as you think.
(Madelaide once says that she want to meet person e.g. from Ucraine or other county to see how it works or somewhat after she lend money in romantic way how business is groving).
I think it is bad for us to lending money without any interest (as I read about it, and you can loose that invested money), while this companies which are something between savings bank and pawn shop (and under Kiva badge on their web sites) use OUR money and exploiting they customers to pawn they real property with interest which is 20% or more.

Conclusion
1. We have (generous, gentle, noble, refine, sublime) purpose to help somebody.
2. Under Kiva there are lot of plunder wannabe savings baks and pawn shops who use our money to lend it with 20 or more percent for they own pocket.
3. Sorry I dont want to have deal with that.
(If you dont believe me, I check some wannabe saving banks in my area under Kivas map page and if you see that pages everything will bee clear to you)
4. You can not invest money in that wannabe savings banks which are under Kiva to share they profit because they have enough money free from YOU and they want that plunder profit only from themselves.

Tell me if I am wrong...
If you want to help somebody turn around yourself and just help without Kiva with plunders under this umbrella........

Computer Hardware / Re: New Photo / Video editing machine
« on: March 14, 2010, 00:07 »
The more memory, the better in the future ;-)

Regarding BIG pictures, you'll need quite fast processing speed too.

Regarding graphic card:
No matter that you will have multiple cores, I advise that you take nVIDIA graphic card (quadro preferable).
It is just because it has CUDA and it can render extra for you ;-)

Cheers!

I'm so lost when it comes to video cards.  I have no idea if I should have a $100 or a $600 and what the difference would be.  There seems to be so many specs and opinions.

Hope this helps  ;D
