that email was obviously a mistake, especially obvious once we saw here how many (everyone?) got the email, so there was no reason not to wait a day or 2 to let things settle. no reason to search & edit images that likely needed no changes (eg all editorial images before the changes in policy)
Exactly, it was so obviously sent out to so many people in error that I couldn't understand the panic. When these things happen it's best just to sit back a couple of days and see what happens before wasting your time.
I agree on your last remark. But, even if it was obviously a mistake, a Shutterstock employee on the SS forums actually confirmed the e-mail was sent intentionally, so the panic / anger was understandable.
yes, and that employee no doubt has been parachuted by , or is now parachuted to,.. IStock

Sorry to have interrupted your Independence Day weekend ,Jon !
but it's a good sign, and i won't be grouchy over the missing "i'm sorry", because at least, Jon was brought in to go full damage-control, if i know my business protocol.
which hopefully means the idiot-good-for-nothing who had been ruining running the office has been sacked or moved to some position where less damage is likely eg sanitation management (ie washing toilets)

An hypothesis : it's july, they hired or outsourced a new team of inspectors for summer holidays totally new and unaware to the business, and applying the rules with way too much zeal. Maybe in the admin interface of the inspectors, there is an option "mark this contributor as a spammer" and they use it abusely, which is causing the 'automatic email' we all recieved.
But this does'nt explain the files apparently deleted for some contributors portfolio...
or they just redirected the new uploads to Atilla 's household. good thing you reminded me of July; looks like i won't be uploading anything for this month.

This is definitely an unfair behavior what should be punished and the images removed by SS. It is 100% clear the contributor tries to fool the customers by this little dirty trick. Disgusting.
I noticed something today which is either the entrepreneurial spirit in full bloom, or the sad abdication of any long term care over their library by Shutterstock: A vector contributor has started adding "Good Vector", "Best Vector Ever", "Best Seller", and "Exeptional Vector" icons to the uploaded work. And that's the contributor's spelling, not my typo.
It seems to me completely unfair to customers that they have to remove this trash from their vectors prior to using them. It's not much work, admittedly, but it's still rude behavior and I don't think SS should permit this type of stuff.
Not to mention labeling many vectors in your portfolio "Best Vector Ever" suggests you don't really understand what you've written.
alas, ss is too busy penalizing ordinary folks like you and me on spamming words blaming all of us , even the ones who is not guilty. even had a reviewer reject me for grammar error which was non-existent ... so where was this diligence-beast of burden when they were really needed?

I know some of you guys are worried and angry, but I don't think SS is crazy or stupid enough to ban unintentional violators. Agreed.
The ban hammer will come down and it's going to to be brutal for hundreds of spammy contributors.
If their spam detector flags up just about every account and can't separate spammers from everyone else it is rather hard to see how they will identify the real spammers and close them down.
talking about flags, does anyone remember that bl**ding issue at dreamscomatosetime where any blinking idiot who doesn't like your port could flag you for illegal irrelevan keywords. and you get emails upon emails warnings about you using illegal keywords or whatever? then you wrote them and they wrote back to say, "if you 're not commiting these offences, not to worry, just ignore these emails . " but they did nothing about those buggers who flood your port with flags. seems like the brilliant mind who suggested that flagging with dt, is now working with ss and thus this brilliant idea re spamming repeated words. as if they need more people going in to clean up their keywords or whatever, after that attack by the hacker. seems like ss is intent on slowing down their service by f**king things up consistently and getting contributors to be angry and complaining at the forums. remember the mass rejection issue with pages of complaints at the forum??? as i said, there is some blockhead child of a major shareholder who must be running the company these days.

This is the problem with crowd sourcing. They can waste tens of thousands of man hours pointlessly because it isn't their man hours. We are the ones having to pay out to fruitlessly search hundreds of thousands of images just because they couldn't be bothered to have a person spend an hour or two to get the script right and specify image numbers. Shows how much they value their contributors.
yes, read my comment re music of mp3 site.

Are they just so scared off offending these factories that they'd rather send emails out threatening everyone than risk offending the people who are really the problem?
wow i think you hit the nail on the head. many years ago it was the same thing with mp3 which started as a site to promote "only indie musicians". years later after these indie musicians made mp3 popular and earned them a lot of money with a commissions of 0.0004 cts per dl of each song, they suddenly got noticed by some big names like the dude from Journey, etc. this dude got jealous because when he joined along with other names like Tori Amos, there were still not top of the charts, with many indie artists holding the Top 9. this dude complained to mp3 and mp3 sent nasty emails to warn these guys about whatever they can to get these indie top charters irate. then they said, from that year on, these same indie artists who made mp3 famous , must now paid a fee if they intend to stay , because these named recording artists are now with mp3 and everyone must be treated equally ie. you made us , but we really don't give a r@t$ a$$ . we now have these named artists and we no longer need you blokes. sounds familiar???

I didn't get the email and only saw one other person say they didn't get one. I checked spam and even searched emails to make sure it I didn't miss it. Now I am paranoid thinking it was sent and I somehow missed it and I need to check titles. . Just can't trust their system either way.
if that was me you read, ... i did get one but only after i said i didn't. still i am not going to lose sleep over this, as it is very unlikely they are going to suspend everyone. this is probably one of those f*ckups ss has been used to making lately. i would write them to tell them to f***off but they probably think it is a compliment to being such a f**khead.

For the producers of content it's a different story. It's easier to produce and distribute content but seems to be more difficult to make big money. The elite few photographers, musicians, etc used to make huge money. Now that's spread over a lot more people and more people are making a little money. I think it was the Who's Roger Daltry who recently said something like there's no point for him to make a new album. They used to get a big money record contract. Now he would need to pay money out of his pocket to create an album without knowing if it would be profitable.
i think it is still possible. which is why musicians like Loreena McKenna, Imogen Heap, U2, follow the old style promotion of The Grateful Dead who were selling out concerts without ever needing the help of their record company. They kept producing new music and made money from merchandizing during their free concerts where fans are even encouraged to bring their own tape-recorders to record the concerts. And The Dead had equipment on stage that were just amazing for even a fans to record with a simple casette, web cam or dvd recorder. imagine this is even easier to do with today's standard of cameras with 1080 p movie. i recorded many concerts with my camera and the sound and image quality is amazing. only needs to have more batteries and more mem cards. I would say it is possible for musicians and authors, but not so possible for photographers.

when you come to think of it, avoiding repeat words is at times impossible.. eg. how do you write in an editorial of something like this?
Boston, Massachusetts, New England, USA. 13 May 2016 Boston New Music Festival recreation of Boston Tea-Party at Massachusetts Avenue, during the performance of Tea Party, pop group from England .
sometimes it is impossible, no matter how you try to re-word it.

3.05$ in June, need 50 more before I can close my account there
after how long, sigalavaca??? but don't close your a/c. leave it there. in 10 years time, your 10 year old relative could use the $100 when you do reach the next payout

Looks like a lot of people got that. I went back and double-checked, because I'm very careful of keywording. My keywords have been replaced in many cases with words from the title or description, and now include all single-word keywords, including "the", "on", "of", "with". Maybe they're going to one-word keywords like Dreamstime uses?
You are right. My keywords have changed as well!!!!
Words like "Great Britain" are now "Great", "Britain". "3D illustration" is now "3D", "illustration".
The email could have been an automated message that was triggered by them tinkering with the system.
Why have they not notified us about the change? I wonder what the consequences of this are going to be.
that issue has been around for years, it is a bug, they never fixed it
really ? i never got the email. but i do notice many of my new uploads get reduced in keywords and many times have category deleted. i used to think it was the reviewer doing that, but i am not sure now that you are all mentioning this strange goings-on. could it be that all these zero dls is due to our description, keywords and category being "hijacked". i better start checking my new stuff to see if all my description, keywords, category are intact.. because it could affect the search, wouldn't it???

These guys currently occupy a good portion of the most popular images on SS:
http://www.shutterstock.com/gallery-2117717p1.html
If your image sales are down, these guys probably have something to do with it. IMO, they have one of the best overall mircostock portfolio on SS and they're targeting some of the most popular categories. Studios like these are one of the reasons why sales are down for many people.
There is no conspiracy. There is escalating competition. I've seen some of my popular images stopped getting downloads because someone has a better image than me. At that point, the only option I have was create something better. My downloads continue increase month over month (Hit a new BME today), so don't see any artificial cap on downloads/earnings per day.
That is an insane amount of photos I don't understand why they even submit to SS and not just promote their own site as a stock site in competition with SS and IS. I can't keep up with that machine.
good point. if you have enough ppl to produce that many like a factory, you would in fact be better off starting your own agency, giving all your factory products the top ranking and top search and you can still under ss and still end up being ahead in the books. plus, you get to deduct all your expenses as be CEO too.

That lifestyle portfolio is very nice (if a bit repetitive), but that's irrelevant to the point that some of us were making. Downloads are not decreasing - it's the money that is. Money change has nothing to do with increased competition.
+10it's also a bit contradicting to what ss is messaging us... eg. on one hand there is a premier that tells us, we want you to be unique and do something different otoh, there is this factory of repetitive lifestyle port and on yet another, there is the lowering to removal of 7/10 to qualify as a contributor to say, send in your junk, we want junk.. and as evident , we see so many new contributors with work that should not have even been approved, in terms of composition, exposure, lighting, and repetitives of marijuana , flowers, apple, etc and again, older contributors getting stranger review rejections with "poor composition, wrong wb, LCV, OOF,etc.." things that would have been more expected of newbies who would not have passed the old 7/10. it's almost as if ss is being run by some rich old controlling shareholders half-wit son who spend half his time playing video game and the other half letting in all his pot photographing relatives or just the guy selling pot down the street. something we would not have expect ss to do before they went public and before they removed the 7/10 and last to say, the lower of payout to 35 dollars. that alone says it all, "expect to earn far less for the same amount of dl".

I'm a small part-time player, but what I see with SS is that the download numbers aren't too bad but it's the money that's decreasing. All those high value SOD sales that used to make a big difference in the earnings. That's a harder problem for a contributor to fix (without branching out to other agencies) than the download numbers tanking.
When I compare a month this year with last year I'm seeing roughly comparable downloads and about $150 less in cash
once again , like a scratched vinyl i agree with you . i think it was stockastic who also said what i experienced too , ie. for months we had those large single 28 to 102 dollars earnings, but it stangely looked like there was some kind of flipswitch controlling our earnings. so that, as soon as i hit xxxx dls average per month, my earning seems to reach a plateau. or it also works the other way, when i get a large single earning , say 85 dollars, and it has already pushed me into the mark of my average monthly payout, i suddenly see the rest of the month with zero dls. even if i uploaded another thousand new images, this does not change. it is as if ss places a level across so that everyone makes money,.. depending on some criteria , one may always make 40 dollars or 100 dls ,.. and the other may make 3,000 dollars or 1,500 dls . and you don't see it moving far from that margin.

I prefer it how it is now. When I was a kid, I had to listen to new music on the radio and that was filtered by the people that made the play lists. Much more fun being able to find music I like on youtube or spotify that I would never of been able to listen to in those days. I like instagram, now I can follow photographers that do the quirky stuff I like.
yes, i agree with you. although with the www at the beginning, musician Pat Metheny called it, "options anxiety"... we get too much to choose we end up in a blur of what is really good or bad. a good example is the proliferation of gurus in everything ...from health ..to yoga .. to even , how to l@id (LOL, there is a guy who claims his technique works because "believe me, i am married to a rich chinese CEO"... or guru who claims his technique was horned from being a loser once in his early days" OTOH, as sharp says, you now don't get the brainwashing that the media controls. eg. i used to wonder why every country from india to japan to thailand to africa ,etc.. where people do not have the same background and culture, yet the Top 100 songs seem to be identical. eg. how come GNR , ACDC, etc.. are always in the Top 3, even where in some countries , the general pop cannot even afford to buy a CD as it cost as much as what they earn picking coffee for a week. with youtube, etc... we now have young geniuses, amazing 8 year old singing, playing the blues, etc that makes Lady Gaga , Justin Beiber, etc look like absolute wastrels, and you wonder how it is still that way with the media. the media is losing, but there will always be the mindless majority being weaned on TV ads and radio and the media. why? because , as my young apprentice once told me, "it's easier to be a sheep that to be a sheep dog, even if you know we may be all being led to running over the cliff... most human minds do not want to bother to use their own grey matter. the movies, etc tell us it's more cool to be the idiotic clueless". but at least, these days, we do have a choice with the social media too, because except for certain countries with blackout of certain issues on internet, we all have the freedom to find out what is really going on with our fellow neighbours over the pond or in countries where we never even knew existed. a simple eg. here is the EC Brexit or whatnot, we can find out more from our own peers , and not just rely on the Bib or general media. at least this time, we can wade through the swamp and see what rises to the top is always not the cream.

That's great but where the word Dozen? Or Half Dozen?
Do you need to be constantly reminded that six is half dozen? I live in another EU country and I have been buying similar packs as long as I remember. 6 will always be 6, 2 x 6 will always be 12 no matter if you call it a dozen or not.
LOL , reminds me of the comedian at the farmers' market who cheerfully tells us "our price is the most flexible, you can choose 6 or half a dozen ... we won't charge you a penny more!!!" wink wink

I don't mean to sound condescending, and I'm sorry if I gave you that impression but here is a wonderful oppourtunity to learn and develop. Don't rob yourself of a valuable life skill thats looking you right in the face.
it's not that difficult doing all the post-processing yourself. moreover, only the creator of the work will know what he or she sees in the photograph taken. you would not be truly satisfied with someone else retouching or post-processing your work, at least i won't. it's like having someone else finish your painting.

Absolutely. My point was that it's not really possible for somebody to make a judgement on a stranger's level of business acumen, purely based on their per sale revenue. Or profit. There are plenty of companies, and probably individuals, who may have very low cost sales, but very high volume. It doesn't necessarily mean they need to pray for better business sense!
ah, good point. but pepsi should not be used as an example... or any one of those rust-removers definitely not meant for human consumption
