My January has been terrible at Istock. Do you think a lot more buyers migrated to other agencies in January because they were waiting for the end of the calendar year ?

Off Topic / Re: Future of MicroStock?« on: January 24, 2012, 15:18 »Eh, I'm not that interested in music, and I couldn't care less what my friends are listening to. But what would stop me from just grabbing the audio, saving it, and then not using the service? I think it operates a bit like internet radio but on demand. I'm sure someone will work out how to strip it but the idea is that you don't store the music on your computer you stream it from the "cloud". When you stop paying for the subscription you can't listen to it. 479
123RF / Re: Change in Commission Structure for 123RF.com Contributors« on: January 24, 2012, 14:41 »What about contributors that used to submit to 123RF but have gone exclusive with iStock? I had over 1000 images accepted and over 1000 sales, if I were to return to 123RF would I get the lower rates? Um I would think your out of luck there. Being exclusive at Istock wasn't really supporting 123rf. Maybe they might have a deal in the future for ex Istock exclusives to drop the crown but Istock seems to have a plan of their own to achieve that. 480

Lightening the staff costs before the sale
![]() Everybodies been talking about this sale. When's it going to happen ? Nobody wants/likes being laid off. Hope everything goes okay for those now looking for work. I wouldn't put I was in charge of the Istock search code on my resume though 482

Have you ever noticed the sort by download tab ?
Why would anybody who was getting good sales let the cat out of the bag. Fair to question about the requirements for submitting but its pretty easy to do your own research to work out sales patterns. 483

Google images gives 32,500,000 returns for eiffel tower. You'd be doing well to get onto the first page no matter what you do.

If I was an Istock exclusive I'd probably get one of those little badge things for this amazing talent. wooyay ! Istock you rock ! :p I don't think it drives the customer nuts it a) Drives them to other sites or b) they're oblivious to it and it increases their spend 30x 485

Veer / Re: Veer Subscriptions is live« on: January 12, 2012, 03:03 »
I think it would be fair to wait awhile before coming up with overall conclusion on the success of veers subscription plan.
If the subscriptions have only just been released, everybody is a new buyer of the subscription and really hungry to use all their allowances. As time goes on the novelty will wear off and hopefull we get a few where its shared only between a few photos and the average subscription royality will be higher than at SS. A weekly total with daily limits for uploading would be best for contributors as you would get some of the benefits of the weekends, public holidays when no photos would be getting downloaded. 490
iStockPhoto.com / Re: EdStock 2 the sequel« on: January 12, 2012, 02:27 »So what's the point of edstock2? Why have two accounts not one? My conspiracy theories on "The point of edstock2" 1) The site code probably can't handle a single contributor having more than 90,000 images without crashing 2) There must be a limit to how many photos a single contributor can have upfront on any single search. spreading them across multiple accounts means they can provide the customers with even more horrible photos and push indies even futher backwards. 491

General Photography Discussion / Re: Travel Tripod« on: January 11, 2012, 02:38 »
I use the Manfrotto 190MF4 holds 8.8lbs. Seems okay to me.
I've taken it on overseas trips, its about 3 years old now. Folds up pretty compact and being carbon fibre is light enough to call a travel tripod. I like that it is reasonably tall without extending the centre column, I'm 6ft and I hate bending down too much trying to compose photos. They're about $300 on Amazon. 494

General Stock Discussion / Re: Are there any traveling micorstock photographers?« on: January 07, 2012, 03:50 »
I'm off to Laos and Vietnam for 1 month at Easter. Can't wait. Its been more than 10 years since I was there last, I imagine alot has changed but also alot won't have.
I still remember the ride down the mekong in that "speed boat" to Luang Prabang. Boxed up sitting in a tiny spot between two planks of wood, a small car engine attached to propella shaft with no muffler for 8 hours. 498
123RF / Re: Change in Commission Structure for 123RF.com Contributors« on: January 07, 2012, 01:34 »
I didn't receive any email and its not in my spam folder. I'm already well across the line.
Although I'd rather see 50% carried across the board I appreciate that because I have been supporting 123rf over a number of years I'm not losing my % commission. I think extending the period to get to the threshold would be fair in this instance as clearly alot of people didn't get the communication and may not even know at this moment. 499
iStockPhoto.com / Re: Sales have tanked big time« on: January 06, 2012, 23:54 »
I just check one "exclusive" contributor at Istock.
9400 sales since Sept 2010. All their portfolio is Agency. If average file size of sales was medium thats 9400 x $75 x 0.80 = $564,000 for Istock $141,000 for the contributor. Doesn't include any extended licences etc. No wonder they're pushing agency & exclusive to the front of the search. Non-exclusives I can safely say if you haven't already, start concentrating on replacing Istock revenue with other streams. 500
General Stock Discussion / Re: Are there any traveling micorstock photographers?« on: January 06, 2012, 22:21 »
I love travelling and submit travel photos which go a little way to offsetting the costs but I'd be hard pressed to turn a profit in under 2 years. These trips are not intended to make money, I'm going anyway.
I can see microstock as a great way to extend travelling opportunity. eg build a portfolio of 2000 photos. Set off into the blue yonder and submit as you go. When you run out of money return to reality and come home. The more time you spent in Asia and the less flights you take the longer you could go for. I wish I'd had a DSLR when I did my round the world trip a decade ago, I have thousands of photos taken on Kodak Max 400 print film. Some of my better sellers are travel style photos but taken locally. As pointed out in previous posts locally you have the advantage of knowing the best time/light, locations etc. Of course you could use Dreamstimes geotag feature to save yourself some time coming up with your own inspiration. ![]() |
