StockFresh / Re: SFR sales
« on: September 26, 2013, 08:55 »
And may I know what kind of images (generally) you sell here? I wonder if there's any sens to upload nature, when they preffer people isolated?

I don't really have people or nature in my portfolio,
but with sporadic sales like these it is difficult to figure out what is selling in low earners.

To upload or not to low earners?
I have a rough estimate of my "hourly rate" or how much my time is worth.
If uploading is easy and there is enough sales to cover my time used to uploading
it may be worth to upload from this perspective.
Of course, you may have other reasons to upload or not to a specific agency.

2 years, sales barely cover Smugmug charges without any special promotion.
Uploading pictures is easy through collections in Lightroom.

my last 100 downloads are rather uniformly spread:

 1     2007
 4     2008
16    2009
25    2010
25    2011
24    2012
 5     2013

RPI for my 5 years in microstock:

so, around $1 per month.

I just finished my taxes for 2012. My expenses are about 23% of earnings.

57
less than 2000 downloads
2.8% of total earnings from microstock
For me every % counts ...

I am not impressed with January.

Not bad on SS and IS, BME on DT, but several mid stock sites provided earnings lower than in December. Overall only 8% more earnings than in December.

Comparing January 2012 and 2013:
16% growth in earnings, but with 26% growth of my portfolio

5 years in microstock. Time to hit the wall?

Hi SIFD,

I don't know your business plan, but you said, you make $8000 a month as a part time microstocker. You didn't say wether it's the operating profit or the operating revenue. I think it's the revenue. So let's try to make a (very simplified) business plan by estemation:

  Tax (-20%)
  Health insurance (-15%)
  Pension insurance (-20%)
  Other insurances (-5%)
  Investments (-5%)
Office, car and such things (-5%)
  Reserves for bad months (-5%)

ingwio,

Your comparison and conclusions are somewhat biased ...

Taxes, health insurance, retirement, investments need also be paid from a job salary even if employer covers something here, so you are not comparing the same incomes.

I think that "Office, car and such things" are already included in expenses, so you may count them twice.

OP can expect growth of earnings after switching to full time.

He is not limited to microstock. He can expand as a photographer or artist.

Microstock stable or not?
It seems that there is a strong assumption in this thread that
those "other" jobs are stable and secure.
Really?

OP said "i hate my day job to death"

So, I really like Anyka's answer discussing some options. I doesn't need to be binary choice.
I would add one more hypothetical possibility:
involve your spouse and expand your stock business.

Anyway, I am doing my old job mostly part time these days for fun,
deriving living income from microstock,
and trying to diversify.

I started my microstock photography with submitting to IS almost 5 years ago, but very early I made decision to be independent and diversify my submissions. So, I've never had a problem with that "exclusive-independent" dilemma, "sitting on a fence" etc.

BTW. I am still getting around 30% of earnings from IS. If switching to the exclusive status would increase 4x my sales at IS, it would mean only 20% increase of my total income. It doesn't look very exciting, especially, with the current condition of IS.

my stats for the first half of 2012:

Payout Structure from Microstock Agencies in 2012

Why aren't you exclusive?  You would surely be making more money and doing less work.

Exclusive? In IS? Seriously?  :o

Yeah you would be making at least 4x more as an exclusive than as a nonexclusive.

The IS contribution to my total microstock income dropped from 50% to 30% during last 1.5-2 years.
But ... it's not money what makes you happy  :)

Since my living depends on microstock income I prefer to diversify.

If low earners provide 15% of your total microstock income:

15% of $100 = $15
15% of $1000 = $150
15% of $10000 = $1500 ...

Now, you just need to estimate the value of 1 hour of your time spent on microstock and it is pretty clear if it is worth to upload there.

It is worth for me.

I am trying no look at these month to month variation in microstock earnings, but I calculated a payout structure from different agencies in the first half of 2012:
