Where is inflation headed?
Up
The war in Europe is going to drive it even higher.

The small little cameras are popular so it must be me.
Gopro and Poket 2 are really popular. I see them used all the time.
Personally I prefer a fairly new phone. Their cameras are crazy good.
I don't like to just upgrade to keep up.
I generally upgrade to fill a need. That's why I use the Apple 11 pro max and
will continue to use it for some time in the future. The cellphones are hard to beat
for stealthy photography because they are so common nobody pays attention to them.
I use mine in in-store photography mainly.
I got to full frame in a crazy path. The DX7500s were lousy for video.
I got to checking and of course mirrorless is the way to go for great images and video.
So one thing led to another and that's how I'm now shooting mirrorless and loving it.
The thing about video tho is you really need to use a tripod with a decent ball head.
Video is very unforgiving when it comes to camera shake and the ball head lets you do
all sorts of composing.

I would love to upgrade to mirrorless, but the Nikon Z series are still out of my price range. Esp since I'd have to get all new lenses too. I have the Nikon D800...

There is an adapter for the mirrorless Nikon camera that let's you use your old lenses.
https://www.nikonusa.com/en/learn-and-explore/a/products-and-innovation/nikon-z-series-mount-adapter-ftz.html

I have heard there can be some problems with some lenses for Nikon from other brands, but with the originla Nikkor lenses there shouldn't be a problem and apparently no loss in quality.

I might switch to mirrorless once my current Nikon camera stops working, but I think (hope) that will still be a few years.
Unfortunately most of my leses are from Sigma or Tamron, so I'd have to investigate how well these would work with the adapter.

Yeah, the worst part is they are hard to get.
The Z7 II is in and out of stock all the time seems like.
The Z9 is just unobtainable at the moment.
I've been waiting for mine since 28 October.

I used to have all DX Nikon cameras and lenses.
I recently sold both of my D7500 cameras and all but one f mount lenses.
I kept the 200-500mm
Now I have a Nikon Z7 II, and z mount lenses
I ordered the Z9 on the first day it was released, 28 October 2021 and am
still waiting for delivery.
I've tried out the camera and lenses on some photo walks, studio shots and wildlife photography.
I got rid of all the small junk like the DJI Pocket 2 and Gopro. Junk to me because the menus are
so small the whole thing is useless. Gone
Instead I use my Apple 11 Pro Max. for my alternative, always have on me camera.
It does a great job, my images get accepted by all agencies I use  and they sell.
I'm really happy with what I have.

55
I don't see how this has any affect on my port.
Probably in the same way as that stupid personalization SS wants us to have. Who cares about my profile photo?
Exactly

56
I wonder how much attention customers really pay to it. Do they care? Maybe they know it's meaningless and are they more concerned with finding the right photo for their needs irrespective of how many times it has been used.

My own best seller sold around 140 times last year but is marked as 'never used'. Yet it continues to sell.
I agree with you. I chalk up the errors to Shutterstock sloth and incompetence. They don't care.
This seems to be a failed experiment SS does not want to immediately remove for fear of causing worse problems.
I don't see how this has any affect on my port. Highly rated images barely sell and low rated ones go like hot cakes.

57
December and January are always the pits for me.
Yes SS sales are down and the dime sales really do suck.
So what?
I upload to Adobe, Dreamstime, 123 and Deposit but none of them are selling either.
You have two choices. Quit or keep plugging along.
I'm still plugging along and hoping for a great February.

58
In a perfect world every rejection would be fair and square.
We don't live in a perfect world.
So, if you don't like what Shutterstock is doing, send them a message.
Close your account and quit.
That's fine.
Whining about these problems here on this forum accomplishes nothing.
You complainers never offer a solution except to cut and run.
Fine, cut and run. That's your choice and your right but please don't
bore me with the same old, same old complaints offering no solution.
Who needs that?

59
This whole thread is nothing but a whine full of negative thinking.
I have never bought into the "the going is tough, let's quit and run" mentality.
Yeah, SS now hands out a lot of rejections for focus, noise and similars.
You can whine and cry about it and accomplish nothing, or you can use
those rejections as a learning experience.
You can quit Shutterstock. That is your right. You can  disable your port if
you want to cut off your nose to spite your face. Shutterstock is so huge
they don't care. They won't notice you left.
It's obvious to me that SS has decided to stop accepting a lot of images
because their memory banks are bulging already. So they have become
a lot more picky. Good for them!
It has forced me to become a lot more picky in my uploads as well.
So, the choice is yours. Keep fighting and uploading and collecting money or
quit and lose. Your choice.
I'm going to leave this thread because it way too negative with a lot of loser attitude.
I'm going to find a positive thread, one with ideas on selling images, on increasing income
and on having fun. Know of any? Maybe I should start one.

60
I know I'm making myself unpopular here, but I am getting a little bored with these 10 cent discussions.

Nobody wants to get only cents for their images, that's why I left for example iStock. It just didn't fit, but I'm not making a big deal out of it.

If I had only 10 cent sales at Shutter, I would say goodbye and that's it.

But there are still some who earn good money with Shutter. I myself see sales in the double digits every day, which compensate for these stupid cent sales.
Except for Alamy, I don't have those sales anywhere, not even Adobe. That still makes Shutter my best agency.

The annoying review is another story.

And as Thijs rightly says, what are the alternatives? Exclusively 25 cent sales at Deposit?

So now you can jump all over me  ;)

I'm not about to jump all over you for writing the truth.
People should do what suits them best but it makes no sense to me to desert the market leader.

61
The title says it all.

Above the fact I'm tired of their AI system that rejects photo's that are perfectly focussed and they say they're not, I'm really fed up with 10 ct sales. On adobe I get at least 33 cts equaling 3,3 sales on Shutterstock. Getting tired of this company.

Next 10ct sale and I'm gone.

Good luck finding an agency that sells more of your images and is as easy to work with.

62

KABOOM!
Hahahahah! Yeah, good one.

63
Yeah, Mirco is a nice guy. He was always trying to bring peace to the valley.
One of the truly nice carry overs from SS.

I'm in low profile mode, I have no intention of having round two with the SS forum denizens of the past.
I'd rather start a "This is what makes me money thread" but I really don't have the time.

Take care,
Upload, upload, upload!

64
Each time the topic seems closed.
Then someone comes with the comment that he doesn't understand what someone is worried about. After which there will be of course an explanation as to why you can still worry about it.
The never ending story.  ;D

Yeah, that happens in the larger forums.

65
Thank you Annie. I thought it appropriate for the Shutterstock Refugee thread.
I've actually gone back to upload, upload, upload but with some real adjustments.
I have a new goal and commitment but I'm not making it public because I don't want
people's heads to explode, like last time.

« on: October 29, 2021, 10:25 »
I don't have a problem with rejections except on Wirestock. They hit me for "composition"
So I just ignore them and move on.

I think Shutterstock uses an AI for it's initial culling and anything that looks a bit strange gets kicked out.
Sandstorms are rejected for grain. Yep, that's the stupid AI not knowing sand from noise.
The sharply in focus part of the image needs to be in the center of the image else the AI might not find it.
Stock is stock and not art, so you just have to play the game.

67
I don't understand why people waste their time with this stuff.
It's not like we have any power to change things.
God grant me the serenity to accept the things I cannot change, Courage to change the things I can, and Wisdom to know the difference.

Just upload some files, you will feel better in the morning.

68
I recently chucked all of my old DX camera equipment, lenses included.
I first bought the Z6 with the 14-30mm and the 24-70mm because doing video with a mirrorless is a breeze.
Video was my motivator.
Those two lenses plus the Nikon 200-500mm I kept and use with the adapter left me kind of lacking in lens coverage.
So I added the 70-200mm. Great lens I use this lens a lot.
Then I got to thinking that the Z6 is an OK camera but maybe I should add the Z7 ii because it was being hyped so much.
This was actually a stupid move. I use both cameras but to tell you the truth for stock photography the Z6 is more than good enough.
I also added the 50mm macro. My reasoning was the 100mm macro I had did not fit my needs for what I shoot most of the time.
I got to thinking back to some of the cheaper point and shoot cameras I had and enjoyed using because they had that macro option. So I decided to go against the main stream and get the 50mm macro. I love it! It's a great lens for photo walks especially when I encounter a beautiful flower or interesting object.
The 50mm works better for me. I have no need for the 100mm. This is for my photography and how I shoot. Others will find the 100mm macro more suited to their purposes.
Yeah, I have a much better system now. The electronic view finders on both cameras are the bomb. They allow me to see things and do things that were very difficult with the DSLRs.
Will I ever get my money back?
Probably not.
Is full frame better than DX. Probably not.
It depends but since I don't shoot sports and I don't do much if any indoor shooting without lights, I don't really see the advantage.
One real surprise for me was that both of my full frame mirrorless cameras are smaller and lighter than my old D7500s.

I doubt that that's the case. I have images related to all holidays in my port and I selll 95% of my Halloween photos starting around 6 weeks before halloween and sell more the closer it gets to the actual Holiday's date, 95% of my Christmas photos 6 weeks before Christmas and so on - and I actually sell quite a lot of Holiday photos.
I have a Christmas image that sold pretty much daily in December, but only sells like once a month for the rest of the year.

Thanks for posting this, I hate to give up so I may try some Christmas images again.

72
I'm at the point where I don't do Christmas or any other holiday images. Everybody and his uncle uploads holiday images, so I avoid the crowd.
To be honest I have a horrible sales record regarding holidays.

Were they selfies? I thought you were using a relative or friend for that. Most on the forum enjoyed what you did and also the discussions with you.
Unfortunately, there is always someone who is so childish as to complain about such a thing. That's why you left. Too bad, because many really missed you.

Yeah, the bearded guy is me. I did all those selfies, (2100+) all by myself. I remember people debating endlessly how I did
it. I never let on because by that point I was in no mood to help anyone.  :)
I really got fed up with the forums and being on them interfered with my stock business.
It was more than childish, it was viscous attack on my port. So I got fed up and left.
That's why I'm not going to be posting a lot here. I much rather take photos and upload, upload, upload than be on the forums.
I have not done much in the past 8 months or so, mostly sitting around looking at my portfolio and seeing what worked and what
did not. So now I'm ready to go back to work, full blast doing both video and images.
I can't see much sense in running down people or agencies. Nobody forces anyone to use them.
People are free to use or not. I don't care about the discussions of evil and greedy agencies.
They are there to make money, not to be a charity. Same as me.
Crying about it does not change anything. Shutterstock is going to do as Shutterstock best sees fit.
I'm going to continue to be a contributor just like I also contribute to Adobe, Dreamstime, 123RF and Wirestock.
They are all agencies that do their best to sell pictures and make money. Yeah, the market is changing, crying about it does nothing.
Take care

With many photos of a man with a grey beard.  :) I was surprised that there were no rejections for similar. I was wondering how he/you was doing. His/Your name is still regularly on the Shutterstock forum

Just before I quit SS forums some pos rat made a big complaint to SS about my selfies. I got a note from somebody in management about similars. Turns out he was very polite, very educational and with some great suggestions.
So I deleted about 100 or so images that really were too similar. He gave his official OKY DOKY and I then quit the forum because I had no use for vindictive, damage happy, stupid little kids trying to hurt me.
I mean why?
You sound like one of them. So you know I think I will quit this forum as well.
I have absolutely no use for people who can't mind their own business.
And about sales, yes, my selfies sell all the time. Daily. There is not a lot of money in the sales but I average 75 cents a sale. That's with the reduced sales commission. So I'm not complaining.
I don't know why you and the rest of the SS refugees have a problem with other people's ports. It's really not any of your business.
So yes, I prefer SS management over the forum dwellers, who for the most part simply attacked other people on the forum and never did much with their portfolios. I learned a lot from the managers who saw my port growth and did what they could to help me.
I don't blame them for closing the forums. They were worthless.
I have not done many selfies since last Christmas but the sales have not slacked up any at all. They just keep on coming.
What I'm going to do next is add video selfies and to totally change the settings of my selfies to make them for interesting.
It's a fun challenge, does not cost much and pays huge dividends.

Change of pace:
I just looked at your Dreamstime portfolio.
You do beautiful nature shots. Really nice.
