Hi!
We've been getting some complaints on our approval lately, so I've spent the day going through all our latest rejections. Although most of them seems justified, I did see a higher number than normal that should not have been rejected. I discussed this with the team leader for the approvers, Martin, and he would discuss this with his team. He, and I, think it's due to the combination of a new approval system, a new approver and perhaps something as basic as a poorly set screen.
Hopefully we'll fix these issues within a few days. If you feel your images shouldn't have been rejected, please try to resubmit them. You do not have to upload the images again, - there is a "Re-describe"-button you can use.
I can only apologize, and hope in the end this will give us a better approval system.
Thanks,
Linda
PS! I would recommend to wait until next week before re-submitting.

Hi! Finally we've added some new features for you photogs! The most important one is a batch model release. This makes it very easy to add model releases to several photos, also if you have several models. Log in, and go to our test server to take a look: http://dtest.yaymicro.com/describe.action?batchRelease] http://dtest.yaymicro.com/describe.action?batchRelease (If you don't have any images and releases, take a look at the picture of it: https://www.facebook.com/join.yaymicro ) We also added a Submit all-button, and pagination. Small features, but it makes life a little bit easier! If you have any feedback, comments, suggestions - let us know! We are making this for you, so it's important that it's what you want and need. Cheers, Linda

If you end up putting the flash slide show on the front page, I would recommend a link that shows all the images in the slide show. That way if someone sees an image and it changes they don't have to wait until it completely rotates.
Great idea - I'll make sure to add links to portfolios or to public project folders when making image slide shows! Thanks, Linda

Thanks Dreamframer! David: I hope we can make a solution where you can make as many pages as you want, and were you can change the image content on each page as well. The title of the page will be up to you, but I think we must have a standardized text content. Does this sound alright to you? Linda

How about making a feature where the photographers may handpick photos from their own port to create their own personal slideshow? I know i would use such a feature.
Yes, that's a good idea Brage! I think we could make a standard page - and then you can make a project folder with the images you want to show. We should manage to develop such a feature within a couple of weeks! Please also suggest any tips on how you all would like a page like this to work! I can't promise we'll make every feature, but we'll do our very best to make this a useful tool for you to show off your images! And sorry for the late reply, we've been really busy preparing for the image congress CEPIC - but now we're back, and with lots of great deals, and inspiration! Linda

Hi! Just wanted to let you know that the opt-out option is available now. You'll find it under My Account. It's still under testing, so please let us know if you experience any errors! Thanks, Linda

Linda - I tried adding "livinglife" (username) to the link you gave above, but it doesn't work. It just shows 0 images and no slideshow is presented, just a bar at the bottom where the slideshow should be.
Edit: Also, I just checked it again. When you click on the link for "rest of my images" it brings up a search page to set the criteria, but no images at all. So it appears none of my images are showing up.
Hi! The username is case-sensitive, and at YAY your username is "LivingLife". I guess that's what happened to you! Linda

I can only apologize if you never got an answer regarding the third party program - please, do send a new e-mail ( and include "third party" in the topic. And I'll make sure the person in charge gives you a timely response! I completely understand that most photographers don't have the time to do excessive promotion of their images, and indeed - it's the agencies job. The different activities we do is mostly aimed at those who do want to promote their images, if only by sharing a link on facebook or twitter. I believe several of the API partners have the potential of generating more income than the third party deal, - and we're really excited about the API program and the response here at YAY. As for commission, we give $1.4 for subs, and for single images it's $0,75 for small, $3,65 for medium and $7.3 for large files. The commission on API is different for the different partners, you should get that (confidential!) information tomorrow. Linda

One of the best way to increase your sales at YAY would be to promote your images at YAY... As a photographer I would look at which agency gave me the most money for my image sales - and try to direct my sales to that agency. I know YAY is amongst the agencies that pay the highest commission, so I don't think it's unrealistic to hope that photographers will promote their images at YAY -rather than promoting their images at lower paying sites. Anyhow, all images are included in our API, and I'm sure you'll see API sales in the coming months. We'll release opt-out - hopefully tomorrow. Then you'll also get more details about our API partners and commission. In addition, we're working on adding more API partners. We signed a new partner today, and more will follow! Cheers, Linda (And I still want you all to follow us on Facebook - https://www.facebook.com/join.yaymicro )

Linda, is this in addition or in place of the 100-pictures project folder thing? (by the way, I applied a long time ago and never got an answer either positive or negative) Thanks
This is for our API - and is not connected to the initial third party-agreement. For now you still have to apply to the third party. You are automatically included in our API, but you have the option to opt-out from agencies if you want. The agencies will also get the possibility to opt you out if your images don't match their image needs. You will find opt-out information on your profile page by the end of next week - or sooner. Hi Thomas! The fixed price is on size and license, so a large image would have 7, a small image a smaller, and an extended license would have a higher fixed price. Currently we don't offer extended license through our API. Linda

Hi leaf! Does the % of sale you receive vary between partner?Yes, in some agreement we don't have % but a fixed price. On both % and fixed price we split 50/50 with our photographers. This makes it difficult to say how many % goes to API partner and how much to YAY, but in the deals we have now - when I look at the price for the images - I would estimate it to a 50/50 split between YAY and the partner. Still, the payment for the photographer might be more than if they sold the image directly on our API partner site I know some might find it unfair to have their commission cut to what appears to be a 25% commission. And, even if I completely understand this, unfortunately I can't give a better answer than "that's the way it always been done (with sub-licensing)", and "it's better to get the sales with sub-licencing than not to". One agency can't reach all image customers, so API and sub-licencing gives agencies a possibility to reach a larger portion of the market. What we want to avoid in new agreements is further sub-licensing - we find that two-tier (YAY --> API Partner -->Customer) is sufficient. I hope this helps explaining some of the reasons for why we do as we do, and feel free to continue asking questions! Linda

Hi dirkr! Let me try to answer your questions - and if you have any more, keep 'em coming! Linda Will the opt-out be specific per Partner? I hope we'll be able to make it partner specific, and I'll know more next week. My experience with Pixmac is very positive, but we are aware of the issues with other agencies. We've discussed these issues directly with Pixmac, and we'll make sure to audit the agreement on a regular basis. Traditionally in the image industry agencies must depend on a high degree of trust in a business relationship. New technology makes it easier to monitor a relationship, together with frequent audits. I believe Pixmac will do their best to restore our and the industry's trust in them, as it's crucial for their survival in the long run. You say "The commission is as it is on our site - you get 50% of what we get on all single image sales! " But what do you get? The full sale price? Or is the photographer cut in the end 50% of 50% or less? We negotiate different terms for different providers, depending on anticipated volume of sales, market, and so on. We will give our photographers a 50% commission on the amount we get from our reseller. In some cases it might be a bit less than on our site - but not substantially, and in other cases it will be substantially higher. The price we get for a large image will never be below 7, giving you no lower than 3.50 for a large image. In on of the deals we're negotiation the price we get will be app. 40, and then you'll get a 20 for your large image sale. What are the price points of the partners? This will differ from site to site. Due to confidentiality I cannot give you details about other parties, but you are free to ex. search your images at our API partner sites and take a look yourself. Is further distribution allowed (if the partner has further partnerships)? No, we do not allow sub-licencing on our API.

Hi! Yes, all contributors are included in our API. The two agencies implementing our API are Pixmac and India Pictures. We are working on adding more agencies. Linda

Hi! We are going live with our API this week. I'm working on a newsletter with detailed information, but wanted to notify you in here as well. We'll provide you details of our payment, your share, what third party it is, and options for opting out. Hopefully we'll have the newsletter ready by tomorrow. Is there any specific information we should include? And if you have any other general subjects you would like us to cover in this, or another, newsletter - please let me know. You can respond to this post, or e-mail me at Have a beautiful day! Linda

This info on the API's would be great to have, I am glad you are planning on providing it for contributers. Allowing us to opt in and out of the various partners is also a super initiative.
My thoughts on the distribution and partners are very in line what what you posted. I am worried that when my images are distributed from A > B > C and each middle man is taking a 50% or 80% cut the photographer is left with very little.
Example, Image sells for $20 on site C Site C takes 60% of the sale and pays site B $8.00 Site B takes 60% and passes it back to the original site A @ $3.20 site A takes their 60% and the photographer gets $1.28 = 6.4% of the sale
It would be great to know what the breakdown actually looks like and be able to opt out of the deals that don't look so attractive.
I also noticed one distributer redistributing the images that YAY sends to them, without any mention of the original photographer or YAY. Is this practice normal / OK, and how many levels of distribution are allowed?
Hi leaf! If you have a name we'll check that it's not in violation of any agreement. I know we do have an agreement allowing further re-distribution, but this is a practice we'll try to avoid in the future. It' pays less, and it's difficult to audit. Linda

You just gained a new fan.
Thanks for paying attention and being constructive on the issues that concern contributors. That is much appreciated.

Hi everybody, and Happy New Year! First I would like to apologize for a long time without any regular updates. Luckily, the reason for this is that we're busy working on getting the sales up at YAY! We're still small compared to the big sites, but we're getting there! The last couple of months we've been working on our affiliate program (read more here: http://yaymicro.com/affiliate), SEO, R&D on our search, and developing an API. Were also in the process of adding a new partner to our third-party program. (Read more about third party and how to apply: http://yaymicro.com/view.action?page=third-party-sales-program). Soon our API is ready for use and that's what I'd like to get some feedback on. We've seen a need for more transparency in our industry, and my impression is that people feel they lack control of their property: their images. Traditionally, in the image industry there's been common practice to share images between agencies, often involving many agencies (resulting small royalties to the photographers many earning less than a microstock-photographer on some images, but they try to keep this a secret ). With international sites, this sharing gets even more complicated, and it's easy to feel a lack of control for a photographer, and for the image agencies as well. We've decided to list all our partners for the API, and give you an option to Opt-out from the ones you don't want to use. You'll also get details on the commission for YAY, along with the percentage of commission provided to you. Our goal is that you'll make at least as much on an API-sale as you would if the image was sold at YAY, but the amount will vary depending on the different agreements. I'm wondering if there is any information or other aspects of an API that are important issues for photographers that we haven't considered? Thanks, Linda CEO, YAYmicro
