Curious - is shutterstock now just 'punishing' contributors with $0.30 VIDEO downloads?
No idea how they could get it down that low, unless they are keeping the majority of the commission...
Obviously seems everyone is making a difference for them to decide to make it a super low comission...
Did you realize about last 1 june payment rate changes??

You need friendly upload/keyword system for contributors and nice friendly design for buyers
You will also need good legal department, because the is no easy way to find those who upload stolen content, so sue will arrive.
Also good insurrance for buyers, i dont remember exact number but i think SS pays up to 200k for sue supporting issue if the image/video you buy and use was actually stolen and then upload.
Get also ready to pay thousands and thousands in advertising
Answering your questions -For buying just 1 image, not too much, for buying monthly/year packet maybe 50 million or more, fast growing in image number is also important -Contributors don't want to pay, they want to sell, but if you offer a innovative approach that gives to contributors the chance to upload and also buy something like "shares", and you also offer trustability and transparency maybe some contributors will consider to put some money too -No body will start to upload in a exclusive way, people will start as "zero risk" as possible. Your agency may show certain earning and trustabilty for some of us decide to upload exclusive. I can upload as much as 50 vector illustrations per week
May i ask if you really have the money it takes to start an agency? For serious project i think it will request at least 200.000 usd...

So, they create them own website to sell them content.
Smart move
Edit: I was wrong, they just re-direct to SS or other agencies

I wish it was 2003.!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Or 1803, when for 10 cents you could have a lunch in a fancy restaurant...

Photos took a hit today (you'll have to scroll the chart).
Possibly as a result of Africa Studios removing their 1,162,088 photos.

If "New Africa" a new profile??

We always complain about massive portfolios, but for this kind of actions they are so important. By deactivating some of them SS could see million a million image loss in short period of time.

The idea to educate the buyers is one of the best. I remember that I stopped buying Nike products when I read the news about how the factories were run in Asia. I don't know if the other brands were better but I stop buying Nike products forever.
Everyone here who has a website could write their own blog article to educate buyers and guide them with the right info.
We just switched our small company monthly purchase account from SS to Adobe. We also buy images from Stocksy when client allows it.
Which other companies would you recommend that has fair commissions and fair prices for customer?
I'll put a request to have an article about this on our blog.
Thanks!
We can look for a higher impact exposure too. We are a big community, maybe some one have some network with high impact magazine where an article could be published...

Update
June 18- 318.961.660 images, 903.429 new images per week June 23 - 320.955.776 images, 921.692 new images per week (updated)
I think things are just coming back to normal, people is just uploading again and accepting the 10 cents deal...
So sad...
Maybe the real desertion of people will be january 1 when people will just get an immovable 0.10 cents per sale and no 0.10-0.35-025-0.11-0.22 ... etc as they are reporting now...
Or...the numbers are being manipulated. I dont trust them, do you? There are shareholders to answer to, millionaires that need to feed their habits. They cant afford to lose buyers.
Good point And it is specially important for them now to show a growing in numbers to makes people believe that everyone is just uploading in the usual rate. So the "fake numbers theory" is possible and convenient for SS

I just stop upload with them for maybe 6 years and just re-start to upload with them recently when they announce the increase in payment rate -not because the increase- but because of the anti-SS movement (i don't get any new sale with DT anyway...).
So, i was far from DT for long time, so i don't know how things change ... but some years ago DT just delete those images that after certain time (1 year or maybe more) don't reach any sale... maybe this is the case...

Unfortunately, the only way to avoid this is to delete your port as opposed to disabling it. My port is disabled and I have accepted that the SS game for me is over. So I'll ride this out for a bit longer before I carve out the time to manually delete my work. For me personally, that's phase two.
There is a very helpful script (ssremover) to remove files from SS in a batch. Explanations are here (nothing complicated) : https://www.microstockgroup.com/35653/35653/msg552685/#msg552685
Would it be possible to make a script to automatically like all tweets with #BoycottShutterstock on twitter. If we all ran it daily we'd get some really good reach of the hashtag

Social networks works so hard to avoid it, you can create the script but twiter will so likely to delete or punish your account.
I use python language, it works well !
For twiter bots?

But we are not workers for Shutterstock, Inc. so this story just doesn't cover our situation
True, but the difference between worker and contributor is each day smaller and smaller, in few decades work as we know will change a lot... In the other hand, it is a good chance to let NYT people know about this... maybe they put a mention about SS new rates in the article

I have another idea...
Maybe several contributors are non-native english (as me) and maybe several of them also just dont speak english, we can create several posts in different languages and write in these languages posts in SS forum with specific link to the post in this forum that speak about the actions to do in specific language.

Continue complaining in the SS forum
I think that if the thread become massive (in negative replies) it could have some impact.

Look this difference:

I just want to share the record i am taking about images on SS database after june 1, i just copy and paste the text of SS bottom page:
June 1 - 326.401.446 images, 1.146.506 new images per week June 4 - 325.718.566 images, 1.157.726 new images per week June 6 - 325.167.887 images, 1.123.492 new images per week June 8 - 324.236.117 images, 1.062.475 new images per week June 11- 324.111.510 images, 1.031.537 new images per week June 15- 324.009.728 images, 993.927 new images per week June 16- 321.860.122 images, 969.833 new images per week June 17- 318.526.227 images, 920.525 new images per week June 18- 318.961.660 images, 903.429 new images per week June 23 - 320.955.776 images, 921.692 new images per week June 26 - 321.204.674 images, 886.209 new images per week (updated)
Images amount is reducing, and i think quality too
If this tendency keeps on time, the SS will need to reverse its actions...

It is not only about programming abilities... and i dont know if 50% payment to contributors is good for the company
Some people will try to upload stolen content, and even when your intentions are good and your philosopy is fair play, sues will go to the company, so you will need a good lawyer department that is more complicated that programming website and also so more expensive.
You will need ads in order to promote images and eventually made sales... these ads are so expensive too... and of course you will need a lot of people to matain the site and give support to both contributors and buyers.
In the other hand you start under disadvantage with SS due to the deal they made with google some years ago... google control big ammount to images exposition in the net so this deal gives SS a big competitive advantage that is not easy to fill...
So, to start a MS agency in this way is more an issue of getting big amount of money to start that just develop a pretty website, and in order to pay all expenses, maybe contributors need to get less that 50%... not 10 cents of course, but an amount that could be significant and fair but also allows the company to being cometitive in this industry

As non-US resident i totally dont understand how taxes thing works for MS...
I just fill the Tax form that agencies gives to me and they automatically discount the taxes from sale in the USA...
I didn't report my earnings to my local tax center becuse they don't care about internet commercial activity...
Anyway... i always was curious about how it works...

Shutterstock has flaming lost their mind! .10 cents and image and the level resets to that every January.
Mr. time traveler, please go back in time and warn us about this and also about coronavirus.

« on: June 08, 2020, 21:38 »
If the new structure can earn you more money, then why Shutterstock want to do it? Your data sample is so small that it is totally irrelevant. Even a Level 6 will have a dip of 20-30% at least.
Not irrelevant but incomplete, at least until now. We can't say precisely how much is the reduction becuse we dont have any knowlodege about what image packet buyers buy more... we need this kind of data to see the real impact. I also think the payment change will decrease our incoming, but this kind of data and researches are very welcome.

No one's going to like this.....but what about being paid in SS Wall Street Stock and no 10 cents sh*t. Now I know a lot of you are saying what a stupid idea and yes it is but you must admit it is original...now you can use your bad words at me...
Maybe better that ten cents deal... who knows...
