General Stock Discussion / Re: about Microstock Golden age

Nice thing about "gaps" in the microstock offerings is these are the few remaining areas that photographers have to eek out a decent living.

Once the gaps are closed there is not much need to hire a photographer for a custom shoot.

Just went through and delete more.  Basically trimming off the good stuff.   Leaving the lower quality stuff behind.  If I ever reach a payout on that site I'll probably delete the rest.

Sean Locke brings up and excellent example of what happens when suppliers deal with discounters in the cautionary tale of Vlasic, Walmart and the giant jar of pickles.

After one has their giant bargain jar of pickles there is no need to buy them again for a very long time.  And when the supplier comes back again to negotiate.  Walmart says, make it cheaper.  After all they have to maintain their reputation as a deep discounter.

At least curation will keep out those who post images with date stamps.  I swear I've come across two people lately on FAA who uploaded images with date stamps and can't understand why their images don't sell.

Feb was my BME.  April was down a bit from March.  I usually get a nice big sale or two but this month was all little stuff.

I deleted a bunch of my better images last week.  Does anyone know how trustworthy they about actually deleting the files?  I suppose it must take 24 hours or so.

Seems like the backers have spent some time thinking about the weakness of the existing PODs.  For example scaling images into standard sizes 5x7, 10x14 etc  Uploading on FAA always comes out in strange sizes.

Of course it will take a while to find buyers and get the word out but looks promising.  Curation is a good thing so you don't get lost among all of the family vacation photos.

Thanks for the opt out info.  That was VERY hidden.  Down right sneaky.  Kind of like when Kentucky Fried Chicken became "KFC" so you wouldn't notice the fried.

I think the highest I've made on Fotolia is 69 cents.  I stopped uploading months ago.  Just SS and DT for me these days.

Official word on the Amazon thing:

"We have a limit on Amazon now and you cannot ask to have work there any longer., This is no longer part of a premium package and there are no ways or means to fast forward work there

That is the answer.

If you want to make sure your work is on Amazon I am afraid you are going to have to put it there yourself.

Sorry "

Amazon/FAA relationship --  On the forums we have been told that the deal is over. Yes, Amazon still have FAA product in their database.  It just lingers there for some unexplained reason.

I had a couple of great sales this week. Maybe they are done monkeying around with the site and its getting back on track.  Who knows.

Hints of "big things" coming in the next few weeks.  Maybe they finally have a European supplier or maybe its just expanding to shower curtains.

Ouch!  I fell off a ladder once, the bottom rung grasped hold of my foot and twisted it giving me a terribly sprained ankle.  Another time the ladder slipped and I fell down on top of ladder and nearly broke a rib.  Ladders are evil devil spawn!

When I started selling microstock or at least trying to sell stock - I read every book there was on microstock, read every forum post I could find, read all the information on the agencies web sites, read books and magazines on photography to improve my skills, studied the photographs that sold regularly on stock sites, learned from every rejection and put every dollar I made back into equipment.  It was a long and slow learning process.  There are no short cuts.  Every artist has to go through the process to develop their own unique vision.

I don't know. I'm thinking new cameras come with ads for the microstock sites in the box.  Maybe its how they sell cameras these days - Earn thousands with this camera - TODAY!

Just about every sale I get from Fotolia is a sub and the credit sales aren't much better than the subs.

Since I've been weening myself off microstock, my sales on DT have gone down but the RPI has gone up as the images have aged.  I regularly get 2, 3, 4+ dollar sales with subs mixed in.

I don't think he could sell since he is the only one who knows how the back end works.

Hopefully he keeps good notes and has a big handbook on hand.

You have to ask yourself, where are the buyers going to coming from?

A few FAA members have been approached for licensing deals but they were dealt with one on one via email.  These were just organic - floated in via a Google search.  The deals were made with no commission involved.

LOL!

FAA/Pixels/Licensing.Pixels etc is basically a middle man between buyer and seller.  I'm waiting to see more effort on the buyers.   If you look at the Pixels TV ad and all of the language on the promotion pieces, everything is targeted towards attracting contributors.  The site explains all the reasons to become a contributor but the other half of the business is buyers.

Where does the company promote the reason for people to purchase/license from this company?  They should recognize their strengths over the competition and be promoting themselves to buyers.
