I've had at least one batch reviewed this year. I don't remember when I uploaded them though, probably January. Sales are way down though.

I uploaded a batch earlier this week and they made it into my port. I didn't check if they were searchable but they have had some views.

They had some pretty bad issues with different data on different servers (I presume) so that downloads would appear and disappear over a day or 2. I haven't had a sale in a few days, so I don't know if that is fixed.

I made a bit more there last month than I have most months lately mostly due to a few bigger $ sales, but more like income in 2007 with a few hundred images as opposed to early 2007 with 100 or less files.

It isn't really long enough to see the results on my end, but based on the sales "doubling" at 123RF and Istock I don't expect any increase in sales and that means a decrease in money for me. So far refunds have doubled.

The rejections there have usually had me scratching my head. Best seller = a background, most backgrounds rejected. Some .png files rejected. Also with no information given there is no way to tell why it was rejected.

For a while sales were quite good there (numbers of sales similar to SS) and with a different sort of market than most of the other sites, but they really fell off a cliff at the end of last year (in March they were behind DT). I fear that they can just get what they want from the Getty database, so why bother reviewing and accepting and hosting their own content. The fact that the artists percentage is double-dipped down to who knows what - potentially 15% of 35% (or 5.25%) doesn't seem to bother them, although it should distress any artist. I keep hoping they will turn around but I see no evidence of it and other than hope I have no reason to believe it will happen. Also they aren't going to be getting any of my new content and very little of my old content through the Getty route.

All I got from that style guide is they really like pastels and especially pink. I hope that doesn't represent what they have been spending all their time on.

Sales are still behind DT for this month (and it is the 28th).

I have had at least one batch reviewed this year. Maybe a month ago?

At the point AI keywording is actually good enough to not need human handholding I figure all stock sites will be using it and we won't have to keyword at all. Sadly they will probably start using it well before that time and it will make the searches even more inaccurate and spammy (but maybe to counteract that the sites will push older properly keyworded proven seller files and our old stuff will continue to sell despite the tsunami of new and perhaps better content).

I guess if we keep training the computer by fixing what it comes up with eventually it will get better?

I'm not understanding this "open another account" concept. Isn't the whole point of this exclusivity to be artist+video exclusive at P5? Except now they are suggesting we open another account, Gillian 2.0 and she is exclusive, and Gillian 1.0 isn't. So i can still upload other video elsewhere as before, and exclusive stuff to a new account at P5? I don't understand the point of this, just let us chose which videos are exclusive to P5 from within our existing ports.

Or, do they mean they'll let us keep our old stuff live with them, and live elsewhere but moving forward we can be exclusive only with the new account? What we all really want is to add another layer of work and complication, amiright.

Just let us choose which files are exclusive.

that would make sense, but they probably already coded something for artist exclusivity so it is easier for them to just have you open another account that only has exclusive content in it. That doesn't work well if half the stuff you already uploaded can be exclusive and the other half can't but...

When sites have more stringent (or random) acceptance policies there is a quite a bit of difference in what assets are at what sites and a lot of it is still not exclusive. This is probably less true for very good quality stuff, but best sellers at one place were rejected by others for me. If they push exclusive in the search it would make going exclusive more attractive, but make the site as a whole less attractive for buyers especially as a first choice place to search.

My feeling is that stock buyers really just want to find material that will work for their project asap. at a price that is low enough. The thing that will separate out the winning stock site is having enough material and a very good easy to use search.

Would love to be able to see the live dls list that used to be on fotolia.  It just makes it easier to get a feel for what's selling and what's not.

This is the reason we have added the Top 10 Contributors of the week. It's an effort to provide you with real time intel on what is actually selling in the market at any given time. I'm personally finding it fascinating to see what style is currently popular.

but it has a slightly convoluted algorithm to choose who is up there. I wondered how contributors with "100+" sales made it. Also without knowing how the portfolio is sorted when we look at it, it doesn't necessarily tell us much about what files are selling. Still it is interesting to see what is popular - except we don't necessarily know which images actually are popular or how popular they are. (I would love to see and know that information but I don't think it would actually be good to have it publicly available) - but it would be good to be able to get that sort of information about our own ports.

511
Sounds like a recipe for a lot more poorly keyworded spammed files.

(I have not tested this keyword generation service, it might in fact be very good, BUT judging by the quality of almost every other supposedly great machine learning AI thing I suspect a lot of mistakes - that is fine if you understand the language you are keywording in and correct accordingly, but if you can do that you probably don't need this tool anyway).

512
Back in the day I considered IS exclusivity, but then they changed the search algo and my income there would drop over 50% and then slowly rise over 6 - 12 months and I'd start thinking about exclusivity again and then bam - sales would plummet again. Then they changed the levels goalposts and then they started pulling all sorts of BS and I pretty much gave up on them. If they work for you, you should go for it, but know they can change something and your earnings could plummet - this can happen anywhere, but if you are spread out hopefully it won't happen everywhere at once.

They are pretty variable for me, but I have had some recent sales - not great $ (and now 20% less for me), but not horrible.

Oh dear. It sure seems like a BOHICA announcement coming up. I sure hope I am wrong.

First you start with $200,000 and then buy 50K worth of gear.

I think it would be very hard to impossible as an individual these days - so you either have to have an image/clip factory, or start a microstock site that just sends all the "assets" to other sites and skims 70-85%.

You can see US sales vs other sales on SS by going to the payment history page :

https://submit.shutterstock.com/payments?language=en

Last month about 55% non US for me (I'm US based and have mostly US content)

the month before about 47% non US.

Just eyeballing down the list I'd say it usually runs from about 55-70% non US for me.

9 days into the month and Dreamstime has more than twice the earnings (and it isn't like DT is on track to have a stellar month). So far every day could have been a weekend day. I don't know what it is, but something really changed there for me around the second half to end of last year and it wasn't for the better. The Getty deal would explain it. Maybe it is good for Canva, but it just seems like everything they touch gets ruined.

Depending on where you are perhaps, their accounting practices and reporting are odd - to verging on shady.

Anyone else seeing their sales take a dive since SS introduced the buyer's page with the not so obvious filter buttons which appeared last week?

Well all I know is that since they effectively de-activated the Fotolia site my sales have crashed!  :-\

Things must be dire around your place? Diving and crashing.

Its miserable Uncle Pete made a fat nothing this month so far $36.22 compared to a $1,000 a month at the end of last year.

Hence my weeping and wailing  :'(

You made $1,000 in Dec. at SS and this month you make $36 from 3,000 pictures?

My interpretation is that it was so far this month - so more like on pace to hit ~200 - still a horrible drop. $1000 with 3,000 files in December is pretty awesome these days though.

Alamy.com / Re: Longest wait to get paid?

I had one that was over a year old. I wrote to Alamy and they said they were still trying to get it. Either they finally did, or else they erased it from the records.

Feb was nothing to write home about for me, but I just got back from being gone for a few days and it looks like March is doing pretty well (for only 4 days, 2 of them a weekend). Not 2012 well, but better than things have been, so I was wondering if they changed something. So far so good for me for March.

Alamy.com / Re: New Alamy Member Question. What should do?
« on: February 27, 2019, 21:25 »
What she said ^  - my all time gross average is a little over $50, but it has been dropping - more like $40 so far this year (which is probably not a big enough sample to be all that statistically valid). If I knew which images would actually sell on Alamy, I'd be happy to put most of them there as exclusive, but I have not been able to predict these things at all. I guess they went about 10 years without taking a bigger bite from each sale so there is that.

Thanks for bringing the highlights.

It looks like short story - content up 42-44% income up 6-7% plus lots of new contributors and much of the growth is in "enterprise" that regular contributors are not able to be part of.

In some ways it is amazing that my sales have held up as well as they have (dropping 50-70%). It seems like most of my sales are from images from 2010-2015, perhaps when they still had some quality control.

Pretty awful - back to about the amount I made with something like 20-25% of the images that I have now. Almost every day this month could be a weekend day there. I sure hope all the sales aren't going to Getty.

Cameras / Lenses / Re: Is megapixel important for stock stills?l
« on: February 23, 2019, 12:34 »
All things being equal the higher MP would be better, but all things aren't equal. I think the photo and keywords and where they show up in search are more important than the megapixels. If you make few sales with lower sized images it is unlikely you will make a lot with a bigger sensor.

There are advantages to newer and better cameras and lenses and other toys. I'm not sure that actually making more $ in this business is one of them. I have not noticed any increase in sales with better cameras - that might be more in the nature of the decline in microstock over the same time period. Moving from a point and shoot to a dslr made it a lot easier to get images accepted. Moving from a 10 mp to a 16 mp made much less difference as did moving up to a FF. In my experience there are very few sites where there are a lot more large size big $ downloads. Most of the large size downloads are subs and make no more $.
