I'm a gold exclusive. Like the OP i feel the same. A few years ago I tried out being independent and 6 months later was exclusive again. It was alot of extra work I wasn't accustom to doing and my returns were about half (my situation at least). Returns have been diminishing, but I have been trying to focus on other freelance areas.

you are 'gold exclusive' but is your royalty still at the same level under the new system?  Having a split portfolio I dropped from what would used to be considered "gold" (35%) to what used to be considered "bronze" level (25% - but now 16% since I went Independent).

« on: February 07, 2011, 18:01 »
Now I can do various things :
- send in 26 images, but we all know the reviewers will not approve all 26 - so that leaves me with a portfolio with missing letters!
- go to Scout
- wait 2 months and try again
- give up

I suggest doing all of the above:
1.  Appeal to Scout.
2.  Wait 2 months for Scout's reply.
3.  Then give up.

I liked it better with Anyka's original post "go to shout"  - sometimes with rejections you really do want to just shout!!

But I'm thinking, again, "What Would Amazon Do?"  seriously, they have tons of servers and I can't remember the last time I went there and there was a technical glitch with the site.  And I am an Amazon regular.  A multi-million dollar company like iStock certainly should have backups and rollovers so that anytime something happens a backup server can quickly take over.  I sure wish they would use that 85% they are collecting off most sales and invest in TECHNICIANS who are experienced and knowledgeable in these things.

Do Istockphoto ever, ever, ever think "What Would Amazon Do?"? The way they operate their website I'm not even sure that they've heard of Amazon let alone actually used them. I might send them an Amazon gift voucher for a copy of "Websites for Dummies" to confuse their 'development team' That's a bit of a misnomer as development usually refers to things getting better rather than continuously worse.

hahahaahaha!  ROTFLMAO!  ;D

I've been there since October and only have 163 images there.  No sales yet.  Approvals are pretty good, the ones that have been rejected, for the most part, I understand.  Most of the rejected images were some of my older stuff which were accepted by iStock long ago but knowing how standards are different now I am not worried about the rejection as I am concentrating on uploading my latest stuff that is of better quality (I've gotten better over the years, too. :) )

As Sharpshot said, I'm patiently waiting for their marketing kick-off and when that happens I expect/hope sales to start taking off.  If you look at their most popular images, sort by downloads, you'll see that the most popular image only has 9 total downloads so far.

wait..so you guys have emailed someone(s) at iStock HQ and asked for an official reply as to why you were banned?

and you expect an "official" response outside of the "official" banning you got and notice from your "friend" Lobo?

Now that would certainly be interesting to see if you get a reply and what it is.   :)

so I sent a twitter message to @istock and they told me the blank pages (which appear to be fixed now) were caused by server issues:

Quote
@JamiRae we had some bunk web servers.  We've taken them offline.  Should be fine now, but let me know if it persists

So I replied stating that I thought they had just gotten a bunch of new servers.  (Didn't they?  I mean, really if the hardware provider gave them junk, they should definitely be holding someone's butt to the fire. )

the reply to that was
Quote
@JamiRae we have A LOT of hardware.  Statistically, some of them are bound to blow up from time to time.

okay, I didn't bother replying there because didn't think it warranted a back and forth after that.

I sure wish they would use that 85% they are collecting off most sales and invest in TECHNICIANS who are experienced and knowledgeable in these things.

okay, time to add to this list.  there's a "blank page" issue going on with the site.  i can only imagine a buyer experiencing this annoyance!

Right, but istock has no obligation to provide a public forum in which to voice those concerns and opinions.

You're entitled to your opinion, and to express that opinion. istock doesn't have to make it any easier for you to do so.

You're absolutely right. Then why have the Forums at all??? Why give the illusion that you care about what your suppliers want and/or don't want?

Because there are still a lot of people (contribs) who believe in iStock and enjoy going in there for the community aspect there with the minilypses and personal competitions set up in the off-topic forums. yes, the community part is nothing like it once was, but there is still some of it left in parts.  oh, and not to forget the faithful who love to woo-yaying in the forums every time iStock announces a fix to something they never should have broken in the first place.

I know someone in a similar position, she gave up exclusivity ( medium to high ranking seller), she's now back as an exclusive. 'Nuff said, although I'm sure you'll find different experiences as well, in fact I'd be interested to hear more positive experiences.

yes, that would be interesting.  Times are different now, though, with the new royalty structure.  So she is now back but the circumstances are very different.

You may want to check out the iStock forum here or even this forum by a former iStock exclusive.  Not sure how many are illustrators, though:

Excuse me, you studied photograhy 4 years and you don't know how to downsize an image?

I know it's ridiculous isn't it. I mean, fancy not teaching us that in the late 80's even though we only used film.  ::) Don't worry, I am sure I will work it out on my own. It's not rocket science. Thanks for your help  ::) It's obvious here that there are some who just don't want new members joining SS.

I dont know how to do it in GIMP but with Photoshop you simple go to "Image/Size" and resize down.  I'm sure there's something similar in GIMP.

Whats fun is that the US Contribs... who might have already had to do taxes with the money included that was yanked. How do you go about correcting that.. wait till next tax time? Would be interesting to see I.R.S. jump on and have a look at IS.

It really wouldn't change much. You report what is paid out, so you will just have less to report next payout because you already reported it.

or you could just file a 1040X.

He hasn't said that. He said he's considering his options. He may not be a 'big gun' in your eyes but at his scale of operation he's probably representative of many more contributors. OOI how do you personally define 'a big gun'?

You mean you don't rank individual contributors? C'mon there's the talent portion, the swimsuit competition...

stop you're scaring me.

a lot of red down arrows in the poll results there in the right margin.  is that normal for Jan or just not a lot people have reported in yet?

« on: February 03, 2011, 19:07 »
Fred,

I always hear people say "If you don't like it you can just leave.." and i have to slightly disagree with that.

The thing is that you start out on a site like iStock which has certain values, a good commission and what seems like a good set of opportunities for the future.
After a few years of investing your time and effort into iStock (making them loads of money along the way) you have built a substantial portfolio which should yield a good return over lets say the next 5 to 10 years.

Then, out of the blue they decide they have the 'power' to change everything they want. Lowering your commission, your income and taking whatever cut they seem fit for themselves (no more EL bonus, less %,etc..) because they say paying you less than a fair % already has become quite 'unsustainable' (because they need the money to complete the construction of their 'Death Star').

At that point yes.. you have the free choice to abandon your investment.. but you really can't can you.
They know you have invested into every upload, the file management, getting your work accepted, getting exclusive, having vettas and agency files... And so on and so on..

Not really a valid or even sane choice is it.. unless you are willing to wipe away everything you have achieved and have put your valuable time into.
They on the other hand a fully aware of this and don't try to hide their intent because why should they..
It's like renting a farm, fertilising the fields making it healthy and then hear you have to pay triple rent.

It is taking advantage of you because they can.
It's pushing you around because you're meek, weak and scared.
It's a choice to stand up and get banned or accept your faith and keep shoveling crap like a good little lemming.
'That' choice, is entirely yours...

good point, but if I can interject a bit here.  They have also wiped away quite a bit from contributors.  I, personally, hit diamond in December and should be making that 40% commission right now.  However, because my portfolio is a mix of vectors and photos I was to take a huge hit and drop down to 25% under the new system.  I didn't like it.  In October I went non-exclusive and decided to branch out.  I'm making up the loss by expanding my distribution market for my work.  It's not as horrific and cumbersome as some people may think.  In fact, it's been rather nice to see how differently things can be at other outlets.

I started with iStock in 2004 and expected that I would always be with iStock.  However, the changes that have gone on over the last year simply do not work for my best interest.  So yes, the choice is each one's individual choice.  I choose to leave exclusivity and branch out.

Canon / Re: FF Owners: What is yourmost used lens for microstock?
« on: February 03, 2011, 17:25 »
I have a Canon 5d (Mark One :) )

the lens I tend to use the most is a Tamron 28-75 f/2.8.  It is really nice glass and comparable quality to the Canon 50mm f/1.8 - my second favorite lens.  the 28-75 is a nice all-around lens so I tend to have that one on the camera most often.

I also have the Canon 100mm f/2.8 macro which is a super sweet lens and not sure why I dont use it more often.  I think I'll dig it out this week and start using it again.

for wide angles I have another Tamron lens I use for wide angle shots, I think it's a 17-35mm.  It's decent glass for the price I paid, but not as nice as the 28-75 I have from them and definitely not as good as a Canon equivalent.

due to my budget if I need anything other than those for a shoot, like a 70-200mm or 300mm, I plan ahead and rent a lens from borrowedlenses.com or prophotorental.com.

518
yeah, I had one file taken.  it was fairly new and not more than 10 downloads.  Just a file of a guy delivering a package to an office worker.  not vetta and I wasn't exclusive anymore at that time (dropped in Oct).

I don't have any information on why he left Nielsen 3 years ago, but combine a step-down job with a long gap, and rightly or wrongly, I draw conclusions from that.
You mean that he has been making a living from microstock?

Today iStock email me that they removed 15  fraud sales from my account.
All fraud sales are from December a month ago? Strange, it takes to long to find fraud sales. Not good at all!

long? I had one for FT the other day and like 10 months later :P

FT takes the money back too?  jsut curious how other sites have reacted to this sort of thing.

whatever happened to "money isn't going to make you happy" ?

I didn't think I had any fraudulent sales, but they found at least one of mine.  I only lost $3 - so far.  I can't believe the amounts being reported by some people.  sad.. very sad.

shouldn't they have insurance to cover this?  I mean really.  now that the images have been stolen, what is the contributor's compensation for that?

Are you using a shortcut in the quick launch bar, created for the previous version?

I've always found that I have to delete such shortcuts and recreate to stop that error.  No idea why...
Tx.
I've never had to do that before, for any program. In the past, I've downloaded new versions of DM when opening it told me there was one, I've never gone to the site to find an update before. There was at least one previous update there that I didn't have. Anyway, it says it's "migrating thumbnail assets" ATM, which will be impressive, as it's a download/install as from new, and I haven't told it where my thumbnails or anything else are.
Oooh, well, it has. Wonder how it managed. How bewildering it is to be a total non-techie.
Now to experiment with it. I've never used DM for uploading before.

you mean to tell me you've had DM for awhile now but never used it for uploading yet?  you're going to be happy with it, I think.  It really helps reduce the time it takes to upload in batches.  and you can cut/paste, too.  very slick.
