This is easy to estimate. For each agency where you've had sales, divide your total sales during a month by the number of images online at that agency - that is your monthly return per accepted image. Add that up over all agencies and that is your total return per image per month. Divide that into 100 and it will give you the approximate number of images you will need to earn $100 per month, assuming quality and download rate stay the same. You could calculate the mean over several months or a whole year if you think a month is not representative. The problem of course is that the return per image changes over time - mine drops every year as the competition increases and my quality apparently does not - so the number of images you need now will only increase in the future.
If you have 1500 images online at SS and are not averaging $100 per month then you might want to rethink your strategy - I would think it is not worth the effort at that point.

SS 2016 vs 2015:
Port: +13% DLs: -21% $$$: - 4%
Revenue holding up OK despite decreasing DLs due to clip sales and high-value SODs - have been getting just enough almost every month to keep things OK. Surprisingly, this was my best Dec ever on SS, but it was lucky due to the above; otherwise would have been a disaster as the fewest DLs since May of 2011.
Over all agencies revenue was up more than 17% - not sure of the total since statistics on iS and 123 have disappeared so can't do the Dec numbers for those agencies. The increase was due to FT - more than doubled from any previous year - and Canva, which was doing great until a big decline the past three months. All other agencies were less than last year, some by more than 50%.
Not expecting much for 2017. Hope to upload a lot the next three months since new ULs have done OK at SS lately, after that will wait to see what happens.

They might be slow for the holidays or possibly you failed and are in QC purgatory for 30 days

Volume is way down - about 50% of what it used to be - but money is OK due to ODs/SODs. Much to my surprise some new images have been selling so I guess that depends on getting the right subject.

I've been having problems getting images in the review queue - Filezilla says they are uploaded successfully and then they disappear. One batch did get through and was reviewed within a few days but the others just disappeared. Weird - hadn't had many problems previously. I will write support to try to find out what is going on.
So...what did they say?
Lee responded very quickly and said he ran a script that only found two images - the rest appeared either then or just before that. All have now been reviewed although it took a while, they did them randomly a few at a time. Uploaded another batch today and will monitor to see if whatever the problem was has been corrected - they haven't showed up in my portfolio yet but it usually takes a few hours, hopefully by tomorrow morning.
So, have you images been reviewed? Nothing here...not even "In review" status...
Yes, they were reviewed within a few days but sort of randomly, not all at once. The next batch submitted didn't get into the review queue so the problem persists. I will submit another batch or two and then follow up after Christmas. Been getting more of the $3.50 sales lately so that is nice but still lagging behind the past few months.

Whatever the subject is, SS clearly doesn't think it is legal to license it. They may be overly conservative, but that is their right - their game, their rules. My advice is to give up and do vectors on another subject. Good luck!

You don't need a property release for images shot in US national parks - those are all public, even though you have to pay a fee to get in. You need a permit if you want to do a big shoot there with models or a wedding or something - that is the kind of commercial photography they are talking about. Shutterstock has a list of places that do or do not need releases and whether suitable for editorial - I think it is on their blog, but do a search and you will find it. City skylines are fine but you will need to get rid of all corporate logos or submit them editorial. The agencies will let you know if you do it wrong according to their rules, which are often more conservative than legally necessary.

Yes, I'm sure they don't have to, I just don't think it's fair of them to do it especially since they say they are supporting artists. Much better for them and the artists to make contact I would think - unless of course the artist cut is tiny and then they probably want to keep it the way it is.

People in the Americas, Europe, Australia and New Zealand will be mostly off between now and Jan. 3rd. Since most of my sales seem to be in those countries I will do some processing but probably won't bother uploading again until next year. Happy holidays everyone!

Nice shot!
It would be very interesting to know how this works - I would think you should get a sub sale at least for the ad and then an EL or something similar if it sells. Bigstock I think allows single-image products where we get less than a dollar - not sure if that includes resale but that might be how they are doing it. If that is the case then their idea if supporting artists is not very much. It would be worthwhile to write them and ask - not fair of them to sell your work like that without your permission.

They still have a faint pulse but are mostly on life support. I haven't submitted anything there in months so don't know about reviews - lost my enthusiasm once they went to the RC system and it's been pretty much downhill ever since.
Their initial subs payout I think is 22 cents or something like that so I wouldn't recommend anyone new starting with them. Too bad - they used to be pretty good.

Running about 50% less than a few months ago and very few multi-use sales. Not sure if that is due to slowing customer growth or image dilution from contributors, maybe both. They are still number two for me after SS but have definitely dropped. Hope they pick back up again - it was a great run for a while there. I'm glad they are around - they really picked up the slack when the smaller agencies dropped off a cliff.

I have only had those on iS, DP and 123 and not recently - never on SS, DT or FT. I hope that hasn't changed. It seems to me that when somebody downloads one of our files illegally that is the agency's fault, not ours, and we should still get payed since someone has the use of our file. Sorry to hear about yours and I hope it doesn't spread.

Is their site working at all right now? I can't really see my account, the earnings page goes somewhere else, and they say I have submitted more than 44,000 images, which I certainly have not. Can't find my previous earnings nor my current balance. Has my account there been hacked or is their site just royally screwed up?

That pretty much sums it up.

WMY. Almost identical to Nov. last year. Would have been much worse if it wasn't for high-value SODs from SS.

You need to bone up on your math. $25 over 67 sales = $0.37 per sale, which is about right with mostly subs and the occasional OD, not over $2.
SS does the licensing for you so you don't need to worry about doing it correctly. If you want more sales I would say to diversify your portfolio and get better acquainted with Photoshop.

Are sales there really worth the effort of sorting it out?
Not in my experience. I stopped uploading there a couple of years ago due to weird rejections and low sales. Be glad they saved you the bother.

I don't know how they hacked it - probably because I used a weak password. DP responded back that they had cancelled the transfer and put the money back into my account so it's OK now. Cashing out on a regular basis seems like a good idea - I don't bother very often for the smaller sites but from now on will pay more attention. lima, I hope you got your money back too!

in my experience, nobody cares of your ethics (in business), if you are not getting companies (and yourself ) money, ethics do not pay bills. business competition just love to crush people who are not adaptive because of their morals.
Sad, but true - that is why a psychopath could be elected president of the US in only a few days. Those without a conscience have a distinct advantage over the rest of us, at least when it comes to business or getting ahead - they can do anything to promote themselves with no regard to who may be hurt along the way. I assume they are not happy and that is what drives them - more and more is never enough if you are trying to fill a deep pit of unhappiness. We need to change the standards of society so that those with no ethics are all punished rather than rewarded but unfortunately I don't see that happening any time soon. If the psychopath gets elected on Tuesday then reform will become nearly impossible.
