You need a 'none of the above' choice

Dreamstime.com / Re: Sales reporting worries
« on: May 20, 2014, 15:06 »
I had 1 reported for the 18th (a sunday, so at least a sale)
4 on the 19th
and only 1 so far today.

I noticed the sales were reporting slow, I guess that explains why.

Hi Everyone,

Ive got exciting news to share with you!  Fotolia has changed the commission structure for monthly subscription downloads for all contributors.

The changes have taken effect as of today so you may have noticed some differences already.  From now on, all  contributors that are opted in to Dollar Photo Club will receive 25% of the price paid for a subscription download.  For example, a $25 monthly subscription provides 5 XXL images resulting in a $5 price per image.  Your commission on that sale will now be $1.25 instead of the flat rate it has been.  In some cases this change can result in more than a 500% increase in commissions.

As subscription quantities increase, the cost per photo goes down.  The good news is that your commission will never go under what it is now .  In other words, the minimum commission you will receive is the same commission as it has always been.  This change can only affect you positively.

The 25% rate is for those opted IN to DPC. If you choose to opt out of DPC, Fotolia will still pay a 20% commission for subscription sales at Fotolia which in some case is a 400% increase for existing sub commissions.

Some more news will come soon regarding the Extended license at Dollar Photo Club.

Cheers!

Mat

Though it only for some subscription packages - so there shouldn't be any clawbacks.
We should all be opt out though

I have personally contacted over 90 artists many of whom haven't heard about DPC and many are opting out.
We need to keep up the battle.

And thanks Svetlana - it could be a ton shorter than the above, but it would be a whole lot ruder :)

May I suggest that if people are going to write, we need to keep track of who has been contacted? I don't have time to manage that right now though.

And that before you write you are sure that the contributor is (a) still on Fotolia and (b) still opted in to DPC (if you click on one of their images in a DPC search and you don't see the larger preview, it means they've opted out but it hasn't yet gone from search)? We don't want to contact the same people multiple times or badger those already opted out.

PhotoBomb contacted me with a list he'd assembled with some contributors and e-mail addresses. I started checking portfolios last night and found several were already opted out (Danny Smythe/rimglow and Daniel Dash). I have already contacted keeweeboy (opted out) PhotoEuphoria (no reply) Leah-Anne Thompson and Ljupco (not aware of DPC and will look into it).  We can't put people's e-mail addresses into a public forum, so I won't post the list, but if it's OK with him, I can post a link to the spreadsheet with the information that's in my dropbox folder.

admin edit: removed quote as requested by quotee

That's fine with me. I need to figure out now how to add to the list.

Go to your Contributor page
Under My Account, select My Profile
Select Contributor Parameters
Find Sell my files on DPC and click Modify.

What worries me is that FT is going to push its existing customers to move to DPC, which will make any increase in Commissions at FT moot. How long before they tell their FT customers that their credits will apply to an account at DPC if they move over?
I don't trust FT - this is all smoke and mirrors we are getting screwed - bottom line.

One more of the little things we can do...
It is almost certain that the funds for the advertising of DPC come from Fotolia. Probably it's almost nothing, still we can all ask or payout now. Normally i did it bout twice a year or so, but from now on i will request payout every time i reach 50 credits.
The same as I don't want my images to fight their silly war, neither do i want my money to be used for that.

Wow!  I'd never leave money with any agency a moment longer than required. It's always been my theory that the money is better, for me, in my bank account as opposed to theirs. And the memory of 'Lucky Oliver' going belly up leaving people with uncollectible earnings only reinforces my position. I don't know that any business is trustworthy enough to hold my money (including banks  :P )

Second, I understand that there are improvements to the program that are imminent and should alleviate a lot of the concern about cannibalization of credit sales.  [/

Do you care to elaborate?
I haven't seen or heard anything yet to point to something better from FT.

Why is SS so impolitic to deliver a fraudelent bait&switch-site wich spreads also malware with our images?
That crappy PD-site cant drive that much user to SS that its worth to risk such a reputation-damage, or am i wrong?

I don't think Shutterstock has anything to do with it.
Looks like somebody's trying to use the "free" keyword to generate referral income on Shutterstock
.

At last and intelligent response.

Matt's comments on this have not been consistent, starting out by saying this was an API partner not Fotolia. I think it's unclear whether he!s just a contributor or a spokesperson. He should get a badge if he's official.

Well I just got an email from Mat that seems to contradict his protestations for all these years that he isn't an employee of FT.

Hi,

Just wanted to let you know that Ive received your message requesting to opt out of Dollar Photo Club.  Ive started the process for you.  Please allow several days for the process to complete and be sure to let us know if you change your mind.

Notice also that FT deleted the original DPC thread in their own forum a couple days after locking it.

FYI:  The license agreement has changed to limit the print run to 500K as it is at Fotolia.  "Run limit: The Member may not cause or allow any given Work (including modifications thereof) to be reproduced more than 500,000 times"

So how does that work Legally.
If I bought a $99 package last week am I now limited to the 500k size print run? or can I go by the old terms when I bought my package that I thought was unlimited.
And how are you going to police that?

For now the license sold via Dollar Photo Club is a Standard license and will be limited to 500.000 copies as well. Members that need Extended licenses are referred to Fotolia to purchase them. Soon an Extended License will be made available to Dollar Photo Club members at rates similar to those at Fotolia.

Backpedal!

No where in their terms is any limit mentioned

I sent my request to have my portfolio opted out. Waiting to hear back.

This is surely a first ---
Today I got a PP sale reported that occurred in Dec 2013.
I basically closed my account in July. I left only 5 images.
In September I requested all my earnings and had a zero balance until November when a few PP sales added up to $1.20.
That is where my balance stood until yesterday when it went up by .28.
Assuming it was a March PP sale I checked - but no sales reported in March.
So I started going back through the previous months and didn't find a sale until I got to December.

Makes one really wonder about their reporting.

And your assumption that SS sells images to make money is wrong. They sell subscriptions and other packages - Hoping & Knowing you won't use the entire allotment - that's how they make money. Actually every time someone downloads an image they lose money actually make less money.

Ok, that is another way of looking at it and has some "logic" that could be used to come up with ideas... but to achieve that kind of "success" they would have to hide all content that the customer might download, making it impossible to find something matching the customers needs. They don't win by hiding "image1" if the result is a download for "image2". And in the end the overall experience needs to be good enough to make customers renew their subscriptions if possible, right?

So I still go with "we don't care which image gets the download, we only care if the customers gets what he wants in the shortest time possible" as the most reasonable goal for any agency and how they structure their search results.

Actually we agree - like I said It might make sense but I just don't see them hiding particular portfolios. If they were a lot of us would be seeing disastrous results - and we aren't. I just see growth.

574
Weak concept - poor execution  - time to move on.

575
There has been often speculation about iStockphoto and their searches. Because iStock pays different percentages to different people there is some reasonable explanation why it would happen. Though I never bought into any of those speculation because in the bigger picture it doesn't make sense. The main target of all selling companies is to make customers buy something, and to deliberately keep a product hidden that they might want to buy to "save" money just doesn't make sense.

It makes even less sense for Shutterstock as they don't have different collections and even the difference between the top three of their four earning levels is less than 20%. Saving 5 cents by excluding an image that might otherwise sell would be rather stupid.

It would make sense for them to do this but personally I don't see it.
Yes there are ups and downs but I am at the top tier and have been for years and I continually see my earnings increase.
