P.S. An African proverb says: "Never hit a milking cow!" how wise!
When the cow stops giving milk, or starts to kick him, the farmer should surely wonder why, and whether anything can be done about it.
If s/he can't solve the issue, they'll talk to others, and consider other remedies.
What would be the point of them going round their neighbours boasting about their good cow?

Shutterstock.com / Re: Shutterstock sales is sinking deeply...
« on: February 17, 2015, 05:31 »
Ron is right. Overall sub downloads and OD's are down. Subs are down 50% for me but when I get a video sale or SOD it pushes me back into "the norm". Once SOD's, EL's and OD's die for good, that's it.  We are now relying on "miracle-type downloads" to make the month.

As far as Rinder's comments, they are true but shouting it out on the form is not going to work as we probably make up .01% of all contributors.  To regain control you either leave, find other outlets to sell, accept being taken advantage of (most of us do this now, I do) or influence 90% of contributors who the agencies are relying on to pull their content. That is next to impossible.....unfortunately.

For microstock, my bolded statement is the only solution.

I think you can speak for many of us Mantis and we probably have totally different portfolio's so there is a pattern, no doubt about it.
My subs and od's are down but now and then an EL or big SOD drops in to make the month somewhat bearable.
Their way of saying "hey, here's something to chew on for the rest of the week, now shut the f.ck up and continue uploading or be gone"
Again, we still keep up with it because despite all this the money is still good but that is changing rapidly since we are finding new ways to make money or we pick up our old ways again and will eventually be able to leave micro. We deserve a lot better, for some it takes a while to get that, others are too naive and will never get it.
I know a lot of people hate Yuri for whatever reason but I went "Finally" when he made that bald move. He made a better deal somewhere and kicked all the others because he was fed up with it. We don't see him celebrating (oh right one post in 5 years promoting his business?) or venting about his success or downfall, he just adapts to the situation and that is how we should all act. While some of you love to take him down you should actually applaud what he did. He treats this a business, treats agencies the way they treat us, goes for the money just like they do by making deals. If we don't follow his example we are doomed in this business.
Disagree or not, bragg about how well you are doing and what I said is horsesh.t, if that gets you trough the day then be my guest just don't be surprised when you wake on day being on the other side and experience what many of us do. Over the years I've seen plenty of people cheering about their success one year while screaming about their downfall the next.

We are lucky to work whenever and wherever we want, but at what cost?

...and a reminder of what's been said in July 2013, imho still accurate! -

"I tried everything I could for three years to inspire our microstock partners to close the gab. I submitted plans, did projection forecasts, showcased examples that worked, presented solutions and had literally hundreds of meetings. I tried every kind of approach I could think of to get the micro agencies to raise prices just a bit and leave place for the kind of photographer both photographers and customers love. I spent literally months in airplanes. No Luck.
Thinking back I must admit, that my chances where low: when 20% of the CEOs where sleeping in the sun, 20% had no clue what the industry was actually about, 15% thought that the only food customers needed was burgers and if they did not eat it for breakfast we just needed to convince them. The 45% rest where paralyzed by the initial success and for all means did not want the change anything."

Gone down to half in 5 weeks.  what just happened there?  Pond5 is accelerating instead during that time.

wait...recently you claimed the opposite  :-\
http://www.microstockgroup.com/general-stock-video/pond5-sales-down-in-january-shutterstock-sales-surpassed-it-for-the-first-time/msg405047/#msg405047

Pond5 sales picked up significantly in February for some reason.  I make more money per video on Pond5 than Shutterstock.  So, it's not a bad thing to have buyer moving from Shutterstock to Pond5.

Don't hold your breath! ... sales picked up in February probably ONLY because P5 Public Domain launch that produced temporary traffic increase. Sales will go down again...until another PR stunt to get clicks and links.
With their experimenting strategies there is no steady flow.  :(

Account closure doesn't stop anyone from opening another one or submitting to another agency...

Maybe true some places. But Shutterstock is really strict about it. I think they have ways of knowing if it's the same person trying to set up a new account. It's easy to blacklist an IP address, email address, and you have to submit personally identifying information in order to get paid, so unless you can fake an entirely new identity, it's not so easy.

Of the many people I've seen banned for copying my work, I have yet to find images from any of them back on the site later on.

Glad to hear!
Have they been sold too? If so, did you get any compensation from SS?

560

If you have copied or overly-inspired images in your portfolio, delete them now while you still can. Otherwise you will get caught, and the penalty from companies like SS is severe.

Agreed...but curious to know what is the penalty?

It varies from company to company, but at Shutterstock, it's permanent account closure. You can never again be a contributor. At least as far as I understand the policy. From what I've been told, if you're caught copying even a single image, your account is shut down and there is pretty much zero chance you will get it reinstated.

I don't know if that's "official" policy, but from what I've been told, Shutterstock has dramatically ratcheted up their response to infringements since becoming a publicly-traded company. They don't want contributors on board who aren't doing 100% original work.

I know to some it sounds kind of silly that a "severe penalty" is getting your account shut down. But for someone what was making decent money at this, and especially at a place like Shutterstock which is now pretty much a must-have agency in any contributor's portfolio of companies they work with, getting that permanent ban is brutal. You're done at that point, no coming back.

And it doesn't matter if someone only copied 1 image and had 9,999 legitimately original ones. Just for that one shortcut they took, that 1 instance where someone decided to just trace another contributor's icon or graphic or whatever, all of that original work is now basically worthless if you can never find a good place to sell it again.

Account closure doesn't stop anyone from opening another one or submitting to another agency. These guys are not genuine contributors and they are doing this to quickly make some money.
In other words, this will happen again and again until agencies start taking serious measures and prosecute these crooks or at least give massive support to us to do it.

Why they don't publicly name and shame them, I always wondered? Probably cos they don't want bad publicity.
AND once image is sold (if you ever find that out), what do they do with buyers...like this recent case below?

vceinc 30 Jan 2015 17:55
"By the way, I'm still waiting to hear from you guys regarding the three clips that were uploaded and sold from my film "Trinity and Beyond" on Pond5 by another seller without permission. You've acknowledged it, you've removed the clips, now make it right by letting the folks who purchased these clips that they are not Royalty Free or PD."

This is the kiss of death. Really, shame on SS and Oringer for letting this happen. HUGE contribution to the destruction of micro stock.

150 videos (a sub plan) for $89. Let's see... that's .59 cents each if all are downloaded.  With a 30% commission, that's a WHOLE, WHOPPING .18 cents for the contributor. Now lets do the same with the 1,000 a month plan for $140. That's an even better deal for our hard work.  .15 whole cents if all are downloaded and with a 30% commission that is worth .04 cents. I leave 4 cents in the change cup at the liquor store.

FORGET FUNKING THAT!!  ANYONE and I mean ANYONE who supports this is a GOSHD DAMDED fool.

Your post is making my onions cry. :'(

Just adding to this black list...

http://www.bigstockphoto.com/video/free-trial

http://www.pond5.com/free

There's a big difference between just giving images away free, like some of these sites, and a limited free trial offer where you automatically opt in to a monthly subscription and have to give your credit card information (and I'm assuming the videographers get paid for each download), as with Bigstock.

That's true... Much smarter than just giving stuff away.
BUT after 2 weeks of Bigstock trial and 70 free downloads one doesn't need to continue at all. That's how I understood this - http://www.bigstockphoto.com/free-trial/5aday14daytrial

"Start Your Free 14-Day Trial!
Any 5 images. Any size. Every day.
Automatic renewal. Cancel anytime. Fuss-free all the way.
Credit Card Information
Your credit card will not be charged today. When your free trial ends on February 26, 2015, we will renew your subscription for 59,29/month, using your information below You can cancel Auto Renewal at any time, right on our site, or by contacting our support team."

What I like is that I see the name of curator that is reviewing the photos.

So, there is a guy Archana Sharma who reviewed my photos (I've sent 35 just to test how that works) and rejected 2/3 of them. All for a reason "too blurry and noisy".

There is no such curator working there - http://www.pond5.com/index.php?page=about_us

btw Archana is an Indian actress and model.

If I get my normal royalties I dont see an issue with promotions to attract and bind new buyers

In a month time, after this promo, please let us know did you get your normal royalties? "Buyers" who love free stuff, only love free stuff. Yes web traffic might increase but that  is all temporary growth.

...and watch this video too http://buff.ly/1uTP8Qk

:-)

I do not agree with that. I have an offer from Sky TV I am considering. Their TV/internet bundle comes with a 25% discount on the TV pack and 6 months free broadband. I am thinking of switching from UPC to Sky. Doesnt mean I love free stuff, and that I want free broadband forever. Its just an attractive offer to get me to sign up and become a Sky customer. Same mechanism applies to agencies, if done correctly.

25% discount and 6 months only free deal is VERY different than just free free free only stuff. For Sky TV after 6 months $$$ is guaranteed, while free stuff only won't guarantee you any income.

571
But their 1099 wont match your accounts then? Just asking as I am not US taxed, I dont know how it works in the US.

Not matching numbers is a trigger for auditing for IRS!
Did anyone talk to Envato on this matter?

SALES...invest in sales instead of wasting time and $ into this Public Domain project.

SevArt 30 Jan 2015 12:35
The result with blank search box my first clip (sold 76 times) is in the 1587th place.

What can I add more? after I sold thousands of clips on P5.

What is the result of P5 changes?

For the first time EVER (in years), SS take the 1st place in number of sales per month THIS MONTH!!! with only 28% clips compared with P5.

I never believed but this month happened.
