Canva / Re: CANVA Adds RF
« on: May 21, 2016, 01:39 »
I hope we carry on getting paid every time our image in a layout is bought, that's working well for me.

I thought this had been fixed but all my new uploads were defaulted for the free section again today and I had to change it.  Are they ever going to fix this?

General Stock Discussion / Re: Canva
« on: May 19, 2016, 04:40 »
I like Canva but don't submit anything with text on it, they removed all of mine.  Some people have had problems with them and I didn't like that they removed so many of my images but they do sell what they have kept and that makes up for it.  I was a bit too quick to judge them, thinking they were just going to be a relatively low selling niche site but as can be seen from the poll results here, they are doing really well for one of the newer sites.

604
I dont get what is the advantage for the one that doctors Alamy up?????? Then SS also could be doctored. All other agencies including low earners have chance to be doctored. Why only Alamy you think???? For me it is simple. Alamy is doing well for many and those are voting here. There are here some people reporting alamy beating SS. If you dont get many sales then it is because you make typucal microstock photos or bad keywording. One thing is sure ... Alamy has great potential.

Incorrect assumption. I started off in macro on slide film long before micro was invented. My photos at Getty outperform my Alamy photos by over 1000%. Therefore I do well at my other macro agency and I do well at all my micro agencies. The only odd one out is Alamy. In fact Alalmy is the only agency where forum members seem to post gross earnings instead of net, probably because once the commission is taken off net looks way less impressive.
You are the one with the incorrect assumption that because you don't do well with Alamy, other people can't do well with them.  I never sold a thing with FAA in two years but that doesn't mean that they aren't a good site for a lot of people.  The same applies to Alamy.

605
Still i can not explain why only Alamy? And what reason somebody would do this. I think if only for example 5 new members coming from Alamy reporting earnongs of over 1000 net per month the climb could be realistic. If they where not reporting before.

Check the other trends and their standard deviation, there are no such massive spikes, followed by similar massive drops.

If those 5 new hypothetical users of yours have regular, statistically representative, large sales, why would they report them only in March, but forget to report them in April?

My point is: even if that March spike is real, it is not representative for Alamy. Alamy #2 is no go. Alamy #4 is more likely.
I think the more people that vote, the more accurate the poll results are.  So if a bunch of people from the Alamy forum came here to vote one month, that's more accurate than the months when they haven't taken part.

606
It's a complete myth that Alamy is doing well. I've been a contributor there for ten years and have thousands of photos. In comparison to my other agencies they are low grade performers. The poll is doctored.
Do you really think that because one person can't do well on a site, nobody else is doing well?  The fact is that if you do your research, there are many people doing well with Alamy and if they vote in the poll, it isn't doctored.

Envato / Re: Envato - Set your own price
« on: May 14, 2016, 11:53 »
I wouldn't expect Envato to be a good replacement for Pond5.  Could be a long time before they let us set prices and it could just be a way to get more people uploading before they go back to setting prices.  You will never get 50% for non-exclusive and you will have to compete with established portfolios with very low prices.

608
I am not participating to the program, but since this bloody thing started sales of clips have totally tanked for practically everybody, from what I read in the different forums.
I knew it was coming: if customers can have 300,000 very good clips covering most subjects for about $6, why on earth should they be buying anywhere else?
The only way forward now is to hope that other agencies will start selling footage at $5 for each clip and hope that this will kill pond 5
If that's the only way forward, I will give up on video.

609
Do they use their own servers?  That would make it much cheaper.

610
Do a bit of research and you should see that there are a lot of people making good money with Alamy.  It might only be a tiny fraction of their contributors that make significant earnings but if some of them are now doing the poll, it shouldn't be a surprise to see Alamy at number 2.  If I had spent all my time on Alamy and not the microstock sites, I think my earnings would be higher than SS but I would probably be earning less than all the microstock sites combined.

611
I sold one with only a few uploads.  I see some people reporting success with them and others saying they are a waste of time but really there's only one way for us to find out.  I will be uploading when I get the time.

Great stuff Martin, Getty were lucky to get you.  Never tried a hyperlapse, might give it a go in the summer.

Here's the link to get informed when the windows beta is out.

I would think about an Adobe subscription if they made my portfolio on FT visible again :)

I signed up for the windows beta.  After seeing what its like on youtube, I think I will probably switch to this from photoshop elements when they have it working well on windows.

Shutterstock.com / Re: Finally made it to the top tier
« on: May 10, 2016, 04:24 »
Weren't most of these tiers in the agencies created when individual contributors sales were a lot higher and haven't been lowered to accommodate current days reduced sales?
From what I remember, Istock, BigStock, 123RF and FT all made top tiers that were impossible to reach for any normal human being.  Maybe Yuri and his team and a few others had a chance but for the rest of us, they were taking the Michael.

Congrats.  It would be nice to have a higher tier but only if they kept the current levels as they are.  Other sites have moved the goal posts and made it virtually impossible to reach a top tier and I don't want to see SS doing that.

CanStockPhoto.com / Re: no salses at canstockphoto
« on: May 09, 2016, 16:47 »
Last 2 batches 100% accepted and while sales have never been the best there, they are steady.  Funny how we all perceive sites differently, I much prefer CanStockPhoto to some of the more shady sites that have cut commissions and keep changing things that make it harder for us to make money.

619
I never said it's the most popular. The logical thing is to film in your native region. Especially for those starting out. It's a bit of a one sided coin though as the most important thing is what were filming.

I agree with this. Stick to what your region defaults to in order to minimize potential issues with out of sync shutter speeds and electrical signal outputs.
Its just a rule of thumb - one to which I generally stick to. Probably 80% of my stock portfolio is 25fps because I happen to live in Europe.
But sharpshot if you are convinced that 30fps is the way to go - and it works for you - then great, carry on...
Like I said in my first post in this thread, I am from the UK and use 25fps for anything for the PAL market.  If I lived in an NTSC area, I would use 30fps.

620
I don't believe some of the most experienced people on Pond5 selling for the highest prices would leave their camera on 29.97 because that's the default.  They would probably go through the same process most of us do, trying to find out what's most suitable for stock.  I can see that it doesn't really matter though.

621
I did a few other subject searches for clips priced over $200 and there are still more clips at the higher frame rate.  I've no doubt 24fps sells and is ideal for cinema, I just never thought it was the most popular for stock and the evidence I can see supports that.

General - Stock Video / Re: Thoughts on 360 videos?
« on: May 06, 2016, 16:51 »
The Ricoh Theta S is good for stills.  Video is low quality but still fun to play with.

623
I had a look at time lapse clips priced $200 or more on Pond5. There's 2,144 at 30fps, 767 at 29.97.  There's 427 at 24 and 502 at 23.98.  So it looks like the professionals prefer 30 or 29.97.  That's what I thought when I read through various forums a few years ago.  I don't know where people are getting the information that 24fps is generally considered to be the best for stock?

624
When you get one of those big single or other sales on an image that you were thinking of deleting, it puts you off.  I think its a myth that deleting images will improve sales, unfortunately one that I listened to when I was in my early years doing this.  There's so much duff information by some old timers that should be ignored.

625
Well how I started (2 regular downloads in 2 months) I'll never get exclusive, or maybe I will when I'm forthy :)

I'm waiting to fix scener so I can scan pasport to register on Shuterstock, but I wonder how many of my pictures will be accepted there. I don't have pro camera (don't know if it is greatest investition if this failes). I'm using Nikon Coolpix L330 for now, and I'm also learning Blender for 3D rendering.

What whould be your sugestion, where to register?
You can use your camera to take a photo of your passport.  Shutterstock is the best to join of the microstock sites.  Had a look at a sample photo from the Nikon Coolpix L330 and I think you need a new camera.  Get a cheap DSLR if you don't have much money to spend.  Shutterstock are good for illustrations and the 3D renders, so you can get going without a camera.
