Photoshop Discussion / Re: Lab mode and curves

Apolgies if this is an obvious and rather stupid question, but presumably you ARE converting the file back to RGB before saving?

iStockPhoto.com / Re: artifact avoidance
« on: November 13, 2007, 21:26 »
Apart from in-camera processing (saturation and sharpening, which should be turned down to zero) the major source of artifacts (and noise) is incorrect exposure.

If you are getting a lot of rejections due to artifacts I suggest you spend some time examining how you achieve exposure with your camera (your camera shouldn't be producing these problems).

Learn to 'shoot to the right' and 'shoot to the left'.  Also, carry out some experiments to check that your camera does not habitually over or under expose.  I discovered months ago that my Nikon D200 underexposes by about half a stop.  A good way to check is to take a picture of something white, using your camera's histogram to get the shot exactly at the right side (RGB 255).  Then, have a look at that same picture with the eyedropper tool in photoshop and see what readings you get.  When my Nikon shows 255, photoshop shows it as about 248, confirming that the Nikon is incorrect.

Once you get exposure right you'll have little need to use levels and curves and you'll find that artifacts and noise will magically disappear.

Might not work for you, but worth a try.

Crestock.com / Re: Biggest Photoshop Contest of the Year!
« on: November 13, 2007, 19:21 »
This contest is an insult and appears to be deliberately designed to entice people to use the image of George Bush in an unacceptable and inflammatory way.

As such it violates the terms and conditions of many stock agencies who state specifically that 'an image may be altered etc but not be used in a derogatory manner'.

General - Top Sites / Re: do free photos help for sales ?
« on: November 13, 2007, 19:18 »
I am experimenting with this.

In October I 'donated' 48 images to the free section at 123RF and rotated them through various donation periods.

All my donated images came to an end on Nov 1st.  I intend not to offer any donated images for the month of November.

So far my income in November is about the same as it was in October at the same stage in the month.

Early days, but the evidence so far is that withdrawing the free images has had no impact on portfolio sales.

iStockPhoto.com / Re: More screwed up Best Match
« on: November 13, 2007, 19:12 »
Acceptance rate has already been confirmed by Achilles as being part of the search preferences.

DL/image has not been confirmed, but it would be logical to include it because it hints at quality/popularity.

Well the offending photographers have had their images removed and accounts suspended.  Swift and decisive action by iStock.

General Stock Discussion / Re: Currency
« on: November 12, 2007, 14:46 »
It's because you are at a Canadian IP.

123RF defaults to Australian Dollars for me.

Somehow these people 'know' where the customers and contributors are based.

StockXpert.com / Re: StockXpert, something wrong here?
« on: November 12, 2007, 14:43 »
StockXpert seem to be making very good progress.  I have not noticed any reduction in sales (money) due to the subscription service.

Note that the preferred search algorithm (most popular) has an increased emphasis on 'newest first' rather like the most popular default at SS, so uploading regularly is important.  In fact when I looked at my own portfolio recently on a most popular search, new files with zero downloads are shown as 'more popular' than older files with ten or twenty sales; this emphasises how important the 'newness' factor has become in the 'most popular' algorithm.

Dreamstime.com / Re: New DT Search Engine Sucks!
« on: November 09, 2007, 18:34 »
Many of you are wondering why your sales aren't doing so well at DT.

Well, it seems that it has a lot to do with your acceptance rate.  If you have a high rate of acceptance, then your images will be nicely displayed at the top of search results.  If your acceptance rate is lower, then your images will be farther back in the search results.  The lower your acceptance rate, the farther back your images will be in the search results.

IMO, this is a poor way to create a sort order that is labeled "Relevancy".

This has been known for some time, and has been openly confirmed by Achilles on the forums at DT.

It does make some sense - those contributors who submit consistently good images and don't 'waste DT's time' with lots of rejections, get preferential treatment in searches.  Naturally all agencies want to attract and keep those photographers who produce good quality with few rejections.

We can expect to see more of this.

In a way a similar thing happened at SS when they divided the commission payment at $500 - that's just a way of giving extra reward to those contributors who 'produce the goods' whilst keeping payments to 'less appropriate contributors' at lower levels.

It wouldn't surprise me at all to see SS expand on this idea next year by introducing a 35c commission above $1,000 for instance.

123RF / Re: 123RF Revamp and Down???
« on: November 09, 2007, 17:35 »
I have to say that I don't really see why 123RF felt the need to change the site again - I thought the existing design was good, simple and fast.  This seems to me like change for change sake.

The existing site worked well.  Now I cannot see any link for images downloaded, and when I tried to post about this in their forum the 'post reply' links wouldn't work.

I'd rather have seen 123RF invest this money in increased marketing and customer generation.

General - Top Sites / Re: October earnings breakdown
« on: November 07, 2007, 23:59 »
Thanks for sharing those numbers with us Andresr.  Interesting numbers and not perhaps what most people would have guessed.

Clearly you have scope for a massive increase in income from iStock if you choose to do so.

Given your comment on a different thread of 'earnings over $20,000' it is encouraging to see how much money can be made at Shutterstock for those who are prepared to make the effort.  I still see comments from photographers who 'refuse to sell their work for a pittance of 30c'.......

SnapVillage.com / Re: Snapvillage not Corbis any more
« on: November 07, 2007, 23:34 »
It is not unusual for corporations to move registered subsidiaries offshore for tax and legal reasons, particularly if it is anticipated that the subsidiary's operations will take place in several countries and currencies.

And being owned by a Trust is also nothing new and certainly not suspicious.

And just to confirm that this is just a technical or tax efficient operation, the SV web site still has 'empowered by Corbis' slapped all over it......

SnapVillage.com / Re: First sale...
« on: November 07, 2007, 15:56 »
Well another sale at SV today - that's two at $10 so far giving $3 per sale.

I have to say that each time I try to upload something to SV the system seems slower and slower, with annoying 'unknown error - please try again later' messages.  Given that SV is backed by Corbis the extremely slow entry and development is something of a joke.  I get the impression that SV is being run by one of the 'old school' peeps - you know, someone who lives down a well and still believes that microstockers are amateurs who take snaps with cellphones.......

That might be the case KR, but remember that as an exclusive black diamond Lise will be getting twice the commission payout compared to Yuri.  That also means the other sites would have to be able to make up more than half her present earnings to justify NOT being exclusive.

When you consider that the top producers at places like FT and DT have TOTAL sales of around 50,000, producing an extra 100,000 sales for Lise every six months would be a very tall order.  A VERY tall order indeed.

General Stock Discussion / Foreign language agencies
« on: November 06, 2007, 15:44 »
Does anyone know of agencies that are foreign language only and specific to individual countries?

I know Freezing contributes to a German only agency.

I am interested in translating my stuff into French and possibly Japanese on the basis that there are likely to be large successful agencies in those countries servicing only the local market.

Google search for stock photos in French hasn't helped much.

Cameras / Lenses / Re: Filter or no filter
« on: November 06, 2007, 15:29 »
I don't use any filters.  Ever.  But I am concerned about the risk of scratches so I always have the appropriate lens hood attached and keep the lens cap on when not actually shooting.

My new Nikkor 80-200mm f2.8 worries me with the large front element even though it is slightly recessed.

I see that while I was away on holiday last week Lisegagne passed the 600,000 DL mark.

Looks like she's selling 100,000 every six months at the moment.

An incredible performance.  Congrats to her and long may it continue.
