General Stock Discussion / Re: Ego(sta)tistical Question« on: July 21, 2010, 16:43 »Quote as a designer, I've had 2 clients this week postpone their web site projects until Sept and Nov...not a promising sign. Strangely enough, my design business has been booming. Perhaps it's the fact that my pricing is so much lower than comparable firms in my area. I'm glad that stock isn't my full-time job right about now! 653

So I could upload my whole portfolio and then they would get to it fifty at a time? I have been just uploading fifty here and there when I get some extra time.

Thanks, I assumed that was the way it worked. Also I noticed when I ftp my files using filezilla it takes awhile for them to show up. It seems like some of the batch is there and then the next day there is more from that same batch. Anyone else notice this?

Photoshop Tutorials / Re: Photoshop books or tutorials for absolute beginners?« on: July 13, 2010, 16:33 »
I have always had tremendous success with the "For Dummies" series. One thing that I like about them is that they don't assume that you have ANY knowledge of the software being taught.
After finishing "Photoshop for Dummies" your model will be ready for more advanced material. 658

I just started submitting there. I have some photos that are approved through zoonar but are waiting to be approved by polylooks and apis I think. It was hard to understand the process there. Once they are excepted to polylooks is that when you receive money for each upload?

Question, why not just suggest he buy the book "Website Development For Dummies" so that he could do that himself? He was looking for someone full-time and I can't leave all of my other clients out in the cold to work for him only. I make a comfortable living freelance and want to keep it that way. 661

He wants to be able to photograph furniture that he is selling as sets. Photo is from competitor's website.

I guess that I should have mentioned that he initially asked me to photograph all of his furniture for him.
Photography is a PART-TIME thing for me. I build websites for a living and have no desire to get locked into some long-term thing with anyone. I'm the one that suggested I set up his studio for him so that I would not be required to take all of the photos. However, I hadn't thought so much about post. I've recently recommended another developer to help him with his website and that person should be able to handle post-production for him. I was just looking for everyone's ballpark figure for setting up the studio. I already have a studio at home (with strobes, not hot lights). The reason that I suggested hot lights for him is to get the large depth of field required for furniture. Thanks for all of the ideas and any other suggestions welcome! 664
Lighting / How much to charge?« on: July 08, 2010, 16:08 »
I was contacted by a friend of mine that owns a large furniture store locally. He knows that I know my way around a camera a bit and wanted to set up a studio in his warehouse to photograph his furniture for his website. He saw a competitor's website where all of the furniture was isolated on white and wants that look as well.
I met with him today to see how much space was available and other logistics. What we came up with was the following: 1 - I will put together a "shopping list" for him including lights, camera, construction materials, etc. 2 - I will be on location while the electrician installs lighting to ensure proper placement 3 - I will be on location while the carpenter installs the curve between the wall and the floor 4 - I will mark out on the floor where tripod will be located and rough locations for furniture during shooting 5 - I will go to his location to set up the camera and create a small training manual (camera settings mostly) 6 - I will go to his location to train one or more of his employees to take the photos in the completed studio After that, my job is finished. What would you guys charge for something like that? He asked me for a number, but I didn't want to jump the gun, so to speak. TIA for your input! 665

I find it very interesting! Do you have an easy way to compile those stats or just counting them yourself?
Also, what period is covered? 667
Newbie Discussion / Re: New Microstocker from Canada :)« on: July 01, 2010, 21:09 »
Have you looked at any of the microstock sights? The best thing to do is see what type of images sell. They are very different than just the regular photos most people take. Your photos seem very dramatic and it seems you use some creative lighting. If you really want to sell stock photography though, you need to do some research first and then need to learn to set up shots, rather than just photographing what you find. Hope this helps and good luck!

Veer / Re: Dash for what???« on: June 27, 2010, 14:54 »
I'm guessing (hoping) that things will pick up significantly after the "Dash for Cash".
I would assume that they will launch some massive advertising campaign to try to recoup some of the money that they're paying for uploads. FWIW my balance is 83.25 so far with 900 photos online. 670
Cameras / Lenses / Re: Canon T2i/550D very popular« on: June 21, 2010, 12:55 »
The problem with focusing while filming is that touching the lens directly with your hand causes the camera to shake. That's why film-makers use a follow-focus. It removes your hand from the lens and makes for much smoother shooting.

General Stock Discussion / Re: Give me strength« on: June 10, 2010, 15:12 »
I hate to be repetitive, but I use PhotoMechanic which allows you to build keyword lists for as many subjects as possible. Then you can just paste as many lists as apply to your images and save a ton of time. Just a little cleaning up after to remove irrelevant words.
