it will be interesting to see this in a year or two. there are still a couple of biggish macro players without a micro stake (masterfile, photolibrary, etc)
I am gearing for a submission to the wildlife library nhpa http://www.nhpa.co.uk/ and went to have another look and see they are now one of about 8 libraries with a combined site photoshot.com which has a tab for microstock as well as their macro libraries. there was no images two weeks ago, just a note coming soon, but just saw tonight there is about a whole 6 images interesting to see how serious they are with it.
Phil
Offtopic, phil, at first site of your avatar, i thought you were runamock with a changed username. then i looked at his, and it's almost but not quite similar ok back to topic, anyone here with good results at nhpa? or do you know ? Phil?

I have had account with most microstock sites and Alamy and did have sales, at the moment I have closed all these accounts, not because of 'poor sales' but poor percentage returns for effort, this stopped me uploading and looking again for a better model.
David, you mentioned "most micro and Alamy...having closed all these", does this mean you 're now doing it independently or just with trad sites?

Tripod is OK in you checked-in baggage.
Ok to wrap it together with your clothes.
Remember to remove the head and wrap it separately as bumps during handling and travel might damage it.
Bye!
Im going to Dubai next week , so I was wondering , could I get myself in any any security problems with a tripod in my bag ?
I was thinking to put it in the large bag that I will check in and wrap it with clothes , and take may bag pack with camera and lenses with me.
good point. completely forgot about that. yes, if you have one of those manfrotto ball-tripod head that are susceptible to damage, YES, remove that and put that in your carry on luggage. i was more concern that with a large tripod, you may be told by the airstwardess to let them hang on to it until the end of the flight. depending on whether you get a seat with ample space or overhead storage for the tripod. (you don't want someone opening the overhead storage to have your tripod fall on to injure the passengers below).

Ironic, that's the name of IS's new collection , isn't it? Yes, but theirs seem incorrect. They seem to want it to be a collection of top quality images, highets in importance, thus it should be "premier", not "premiere". A collection of images not seen elsewhere before, as suggested here, should be "premiere".
maybe since canada being bilingual , they had a french translator where one is masc (without the e) and the other is fem (with the e) but synonyms. then again, coming from IStock, we won't know until they tell us what THEY really mean

I usually am well above the 7kg allowed hand luggage with laptop, cam, lenses, USB disks, so the tripod has to go in the checked luggage.
good point, and it's getting lighter each decade. remember when it used to be what? 18 kg or 15 kg??? Make sure to use a reinforced case because the last few years, I presume they let elephants run over the checked luggage. Bahrain is the worst for damage, Abu Dhabi and Qatar are slightly better.
if you're serious about that i think it's due to the heavier traffic as Dubai is where most of the jet set from Abu Dhabi and Qatar go . so they chuck your luggage instead of taking the time to gently transfer from the carts to the cargo cabins it's not a case of whether it resembles an AK47. ever tried carrying on a knife? especially on flights stopping over in those countries that are high security alert? we're not talking about flying from DFW or DEN to LAX. we're talking about crossing international borders.
We ain't talking about hand luggage right?
yes gregor, first time we were

I guess airport personnel will know the difference between a tripod and a AK-47. They'll had photographers passing through before.
have a nice trip!

Perseus , sorry about my English , obviously I wasn't clear enough. I wasn't thinking about taking the tripod with me in the plane , only camera and lenses , and leave the tripod in the cargo that will go bellow. So I guess that's OK ?
certainly, in cargo. the restriction in cargo are mostly explosives (serious) ,and chemicals that could explode or implode in the pressurized cargo cabins (spray cans, etc) or toxic stuff found in household cleaners,etc.. Anyway I will stay at my friends house , he plays some sport professionally there for a year now so he already warned me about "protocols" in Dubai and even promised my mother that he will be responsible for me .
wonderful. have a wonderful and safe time in Dubai.

Jolly good show indeed, Mr. Griffin.

but why would you need to carry on the tripod. i usually carry on the fragile and important equipment (camera, lenses, film, mem cards, flashmeter, etc) . tripod is not going to be damaged by handling, and should better be in your cargo. in some countries you may be disallowed too, as this can be considered a likely weapon, considering that even a camping knife is disallowed in certain countries. this could delay your flight, why cause it a hassle for nothing. some security won't take no for an answer, and remember you're in foreign soil. my experience is the lest hassle you cause airport security , or any foreign security , the better and more enjoyable your trip will be. Dubai especially. Be aware of religious protocol, eg. don't point a camera at women with hijabs, don't look at them, nor wish them, just move aside to let them pass UNNOTICED,etc... even if Dubai is supposed to be the most "liberal" in that area. P.S. and brush up on your Arabic (shukran, essalamalaykum/alyka/alyki, la,mashallah,etc..). it'll go a long way.

I'm of the opinion a simple post count indicator is always the most neutral and effective quality indicator for forum members - if someone was being a wiener all the time they probably wouldn't make it to post 3323. I'm sure this mod Leaf added is pretty safe for spamming and stuff.. but at the pace of how ideas progress here I think a power-up heart won't mean as much as hoped for because it requires stopping and evaluating the individual message which might be too much of a distraction to bother for most busy people.
On the other hand, I am always one to support non-intrusive experiments - it absolutely can not do any harm to try out.
I like the idea of being able to see which threads have the most useful posts though. If a thread is found to have many useful posts it is probably a good read, or perhaps there could be an area listing the top 10 useful posts.
Perhaps to reduce the 'competition' or 'popularity contest' factor each persons rating could be hidden for everyone but them. I still think it could be alright for people to be able to see which posts people find helpful, and nice to see your helpful post count go up if you work hard at answering people questions.
Otherwise, I am not sure that clicking on the heart, or the benefits of reaching a certain number of helpful posts is rewarding enough for people to do it without reason... but we shall see. I am open to opinion.
I inserted two quotes above which make sense . The dread of popularity mongers and mobsters is rather silly , as zymmetrical points out, I can't see anyone taking the time to "vote" for you simply because he/she thinks you're a cool jerk or to quote zymmetrical "weiner". If so, it sure takes a bigger "weiner" to want to vote for such a jerk / weiner. Furthermore, I can't see how anyone enjoys being told he is the most popular "pr##k" (censored deliberately derogatory) in this forum. lol, can you imagine the obituary for this poor ole sod, the only one good thing said about him , "here lies.. xxxxxxx, voted most popular PR##K in Microstockgroup forum."

It's been nearly two weeks since their original announcement was met with almost unanimous horror and disbelief. Hopefully that's a good sign.

By the way, I really liked the term "Premiere" - don't remember who launched it in the other thread, but I think it would stand out as part of the site name (photopremiere.com, premierestock.com?)
Ironic, that's the name of IS's new collection , isn't it?

C' ya guys! I have to go!
Instead of congratulating Whitechild, you humiliate him for his success?
It's truly a sad day in microstock forum if some of you can be so envious as to take a stab at one of your peers. Et tu, Brute? http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Et_tu,_Brute%3F
"some of you" ? The only posting I see that fits that criteria was the totally unpleasant one from gostwyck. I hope you are not including my comments, as I was genuinely congratulating Ivan on getting accepted at Veer. The reference to the Cat and Dog photo was humerous and this image is indeed legendary (there's a thread here somewhere, and the story has turned up on other blogs as well). Just wanted to clarify that because anyone reading this thread might presume (wrongly) that you are including me in the "some of you" . Regards, David
Let's simply say whoever they are they know .

well said michaeldb.
whether you benefit is largely dependant on where you are. some countries, even some provinces (as called in Canada) or counties (in ole UK,etc..) offer grants to small businesses to incorporate. At times, this is on top of what the country offers. If you are a resident in a country or state that caters to corporations in favour of the working mom and pop, you would benefit from incorporating. Do your homework. As they say, "most people spend more time in research buying a car, than they do in getting a mortgage or incorporating". Don't be one of those (wink).

isn't the limit dependant on your approval rating? 65% = 100 , 85% = 150 ,etc...

Am I the only one getting US$1 and US$2? I get those too but a 4 credit image can cost the buyer between $4 and $10, so $2 might only be 20% commission.
I see your point now, however this is exactly what it reads in their FAQ - they don't say 50% commission, but 50c per credit. I suppose the 2.50 credit is very rare, maybe even the US$2 credit - these must be very occasional buyers. I believe our commission there is probably on the 30-40%, au pair with FT or above.
Perharps I am not as involved in the arithmetic of it all. Coming from a different background, I don't pay much attention to anything other then the bottom line. Sure, the %age sounds wonderful if raised to a level we all feel great, but like it or not, you can easily find other sites to contribute if the criterion of a higher percentage or per sale is that vital to you. In my case, I'd still prefer seeing I earned $1 -2 per download. How much BigStock earns is irrelevant to me, so long as they don't roll over and die.

I am sure somewhere on the www there are already stockphotographers in your country who is already doing this. I suggest you confer with them. It does help to have a consultant who specializes in that field, as it is having an Entertainment Lawyer represent you, if you are a director ,etc. Generalists are not as informed as Specialist, so it would be to your advantage to talk to some of the more established people to see what they do in similar situation as you.

Join together for leverage - 22 (36.7%) Create a Collective Website - 20 (33.3%) Not Interested Waste of Time - 18 (30%) .... very disappointing. Such big percent doesn't even care.
Whitechild, maybe it isn't that they don't even care. Without sufficient backing from the big players, no doubt most prefer to deal with what they face. As the saying, " Better to deal with the devil you are used to..."

Tyler, if you checked my previous communications with lisafx above, I never mentioned incorporation saves taxes. That was the title of this blog. Traditionally, incorporation was advised to protect your liability as a professional, since you become a separate entity from the corporation. Whether this would actually save you taxes or not, depends on how well you apply the taxation benefits offered to Coporations. You consult a Tax Consultant for that, ie. during my days such specialists hold the designation ATII within the old British Commonwealth (perharps they are now called ACA/ACCA). They were distinct from Public Accountants ( eg.US - CPA), although usually, in a Public Accounting firm, they would some distinctive ATIIs on board.
