Off Topic / Re: My portfolio website open
« on: November 06, 2007, 04:27 »
Very nice photography Mjp.  And a nice portfolio section on your site.

But for my taste there are too many Google Ads.

Do you want to sell your photography or something else?  If you want to promote and sell your photography, the viewers eye has to be focussed on what you want to sell, not on loads of Google Ads cluttering up the site.

Just my opinion.

General Stock Discussion / Re: What f-stop is best for microstock?
« on: November 06, 2007, 02:14 »
Yes, a very high F stop intoduces a phenomenon called diffraction which causes deterioration of sharpness.

My Nikkor 35mm F2 for instance starts to deteriorate at about F14 and I can see an obvious difference in sharpness if I take the same shot at F11 and F16.  Consequently I never use this lens at more than F13.  Between F2.8 and F13 it's wonderful.

Macro lenses tend to be optimised for deep DOF so my Nikkor 60mm Micro takes perfectly sharp pictures all the way to F32 and is best between F11 and F32.

Thanks.  I had another try after a few hours and it accepted them no problem.

It seems the bugs continue at SV.

First subscription sales at StockXpert today.  Appears to have been one customer who downloaded four files from the same series.

All XL (of course).

It's not so bad if customers use their subscription to buy a variety of images from the same photographer in a batch.  Yes, those sales would have made me $10 on normal credits, but no guarantee that the customer would have been a buyer on those terms.

I hope the batch sales become the norm for subscriptions at StockXpert.

BTW I wrote to them about the 'snappyness' thing.  I noticed that images that had downloads, comments, views etc didn't actually move up the snappyness rating.  I also noticed that the 'editors picks' are the same as the 'most snappy'.

Their reply was that umm.....the snappy thing doesn't actually work yet.

This is poor when you consider their claim that 'snappyness works on a unique algorithm'.  The uniqueness is actually that it doesn't yet exist........

I am not allowing subscription sales at SV.  Point of principle.  SS make good sales for me and they have invested a considerable amount of time and money and effort to get their agency established over the past three years; I see no reason at all why I should suddenly allow SV to sell on the same terms and risk undermining the hard work of SS.

The same goes for credit sales - I have priced everything at $10 which is higher than the established agencies.  I make good money at IS, DT and FT and I am not going to slap them in the face by undercutting with a $5 rate at SV.

SV have everything to prove; so far they have been incredibly slow given their background and the money backing them.  No - IF they make some sort of effort to get the bugs ironed out, start advertising and actually show they mean business, well that's a different kettle of fish; but for the moment their approach seems half hearted to say the least.

Cameras / Lenses / Re: Spending my dollars
« on: November 04, 2007, 19:34 »
Although the Fed says publicly that it does not want inflation, I believe that the opposite is true.

A little inflation is not only healthy in a successful economy, but past statistics have shown that annual inflation below 2.5% is tantamount to a deflationary environment and leads to slower economic growth.

This is why Central Banks worldwide tend to have inflation targets in the 2% to 2.5% range rather than zero.

The risk for the Fed in encouraging inflation is that it overshoots the ideal levels and causes a spike which will need high interest rates to reverse (which is what is going to happen).

Yeah, the problem at FT is that it is impossible to see the total sales value of any image.

Cameras / Lenses / Re: Spending my dollars
« on: November 04, 2007, 17:21 »
Yes it does.  Of course.  As the dollar goes down imported goods from overseas become more expensive.  If the overseas manufacturers cannot keep prices stable with efficiency then prices will go up and America gets inflation (which is what the Fed wants).

American goods become less expensive in overseas markets.  This makes them more competitive.  So long as America actually has goods that people want to buy........

Overseas travel is becoming much more expensive for Americans.  That nice trip to England now costs a lot of money in dollar terms.

But I keep seeing statistics which say that 70% of Americans have never travelled overseas and do not even have a passport.......

Like water, the dollar will eventually settle at its natural level.

Who says the dollar is 'low'?  It might be lower than recent times, but for all we know its value could still be too 'high'.

"Nothing is too low to go down, and nothing is too high to go up"

In 1954 $1 bought 6,000 JPY (Yen).  Today it buys 140 JPY.  Presumably at various levels (pehaps 3,000, 2,000, 1,000, 500 etc) people thought it was 'too low'.

I have no idea where its going, but if it can fall from JPY 6,000 to JPY 140, surely it can just as easily fall from JPY140 to JPY 50 or lower.

Its a real problem for those of us who live in other countries (which is why the US Government is allowing it to happen).

I think andresr was above $20 last month but the poll didn't include such a high level.

Yes, he rocks.  But other members here are also making great progress and achieving good numbers as well; it appears we have a very high quality membership on this board.

Congrats to all who are achieving their personal targets, whether full time, part time or even very occasional stock shooter.

You can eliminate the curvature on that phone pad by using the lens correction filter in photoshop.  Quite easy.

Based in South Africa and appears to be owned by Forgiss (or at least he has a significant interest).  Andresr is also a founder member.

Appears to be a well designed site.  Brand new.

Haven't had time to do any further research.

If there are any pictures of children at any agencies with keywords such as 'sex' or 'sexy' those words should be removed immediately or alternatively the image deleted.

You will eventually get used to the strict standards at IS.  Their strict reviews will help improve the quality of your photography.

Like you I was frustrated at first, but I now have nearly 500 images there and hardly ever get a rejection nowadays.  My overall acceptance rate is 84% including my first submissions.

Lots of people criticise IS, but their reviewers are usually right and their high standard is one of the prime reasons they have so many buying customers.

Elena, are any of those subscription sales?

Personally I have disallowed subscription sales at SV (for the moment).  I'll be interested to hear how people fare with subscription versus normal sales.

You are one ahead of me then sharpshot...... I've still only got one sale...

As for pricing - Getty are now advertising 'web size' RF images for $49, three month use only.

The same size will cost $1 at iStock, no time constraints.

The question is: over the next couple of years will Getty have to reduce prices yet again, or will iStock's price continue to rise?

There is scope for microstock prices to increase by a very large amount.

And I don't think all these new 'small' agencies will have any effect at all on sales at the larger agencies like IS and SS.  But that's only my view.

Can you see image buyers leaving IS in droves because prices at Albumo are slightly cheaper?

Nah.......

Did he say that?  I only remember him saying "Hiss, splutter, wheeze, cough.... you are my son, Luke..... hiss, splutter, wheeze......"

Or was it "Wheeze, hiss, wheeze..... turn to the dark side, Luke..... wheeze, wheeze, hiss..."

Yeah, $10 seems right sharpshot - $5 to some extent undercuts the existing agencies who have spent much time and effort and who are already generating sales (and money) for us.  Personal choice I suppose, but it seems right not to give this newcomer the same terms given that they are late to the game.

Besides....... all the existing agencies should charge higher prices........
