Adobe Stock / Re: No sales 700+ photo
« on: July 03, 2019, 05:43 »
Sometimes you have some weird titles:

"it's called ring dessert. It was taken while frying in oil"
https://stock.adobe.com/images/it-s-called-ring-dessert-it-was-taken-while-frying-in-oil/275290334?prev_url=detail

"cat, different movements, cheerful, animals, friendly, happy, stray cat,"
https://stock.adobe.com/images/cat-different-movements-cheerful-animals-friendly-happy-stray-cat/265267550?prev_url=detail

I'm no expert in photography, but I agree with the others that nothing really stands out in your portfolio.

I just spotted several much higher value sales, as much as $20, where I am still getting 35c!!!!!!!! Anyone else seeing this? Must be a mistake, their FAQ clearly says 35% so 35c should only be for $1 sales! anyone else? I suggest going through sales carefully.

So far I've only had $1 sales (One-time use) for 35c or $10 (Multi-use) for $3.50. I never had any other value sales. Let us know what support says.

When would the first payment be? I don't like their lack of communication. No royalty estimations before launch, no proper timeline for payment, no easy opt-out without deleting your entire portfolio....when did this program even launch? We're being kept in the dark, probably because the numbers will be embarrassingly low.

Canva is going down the drain...like so many others.

654
No, because you'd have to either:
- remove the old clip, destroying any built up exposure and search placement for that best-seller
- leave the old file, upload the re-edit and risk a similar content rejection, and if it passes it will directly compete with the best-seller, and possibly confuse customers.

iStockPhoto.com / Re: May's numbers are out.
« on: June 20, 2019, 08:47 »
Of course I signed up knowing that iStock only pays 20% (vector) and Getty sales 15%, but it still sickens me to see that something like a $30 sale nets me only $4.50.

My yearly iStock revenue becomes less each year (roughly 50% of the previous year) so pretty soon it won't make any financial sense anymore to support this lousy agency.

They cut royalties here and there whenever they please, yet they refuse to invest in a good review process. Sales have become a rare sight too. Something's very off about this agency.

657
It is abundantly clear to me now that SS no longer has the best interests of contributors or even the industry as a whole in mind;

Obviously contributors no longer matter nor do the rights of content creators outside of their platform,

They never had our interests in mind. It's a big multi-million dollar corporation with clockwork monkeys with no authority, responsibility or care about the industry as a whole. The only thing that matters is the bottom line, i.e. shareholders' revenue.

658
I also got this letter with the "Let's see what you're working on". I wanted to answer with "working in the garden" but I am not sure they are interested in my veggies  ;D

I wish they'd change it back.

They would be interested in your veggies if you show them a cabbage with a 1 meter diameter and at least 50 leaves.

Hi Gavin,

Not sure if you also need illustrations, but I can also provide you with vector images from my portfolio for a single payment per image ($5) or in bulk ($1 per image). (Also Dutch, by the way, so payment in is possible, via invoice.)

Let me know if you want illustrations and I'll pm you my portfolio.

Did the survey and tested the mock-up interface.

For your information: it's not about spec work / crowdsourcing, it's about customers asking for a customized version of an exisiting portfolio image. For instance, a 3d render in a different color scheme. The custom job would be listed on your dashboard including a description, the extra reward the buyer is willing to pay, a delivery date and accompanying reference images. You'd then have a choice to accept the custom job for the reward offered.

I like the concept, but the reward has to be worth the time (no Fiverr type of prices, maybe add the option to negotiate a price or list your own hourly rate). Also, the reward should be on top of the license commission.

Edit: some more feedback: there'd have to be an escrow payment system, so the artist isn't doing work for nothing. You don't want a situation where the client suddenly stops responding (i.e. the work doesn't get approved or the client refuses to pay). The agency would need to mediate in case of a dispute.

661
That's just the usual client / photographer relationship probably with a minuscule budget!
That's what I thought. What has that to do with microstock? (A micropriced commission?)

Although not as ideal as a 'real' assignment, if the work created for that client is not exclusive, the lower budget might be acceptable. You get to create something that at least one buyer will want, get paid a commission AND retain the rights to sell it RF.

662
Yuk. This concept is already out there on all those "logo contest" websites, where buyers get thousands of hours of work and hundreds of drafts to choose from for a few dollars. IStock also did it for a while for vectors (can't remember what it was called). Anyway, sucks hard for contributors.

Unless I am misunderstanding (which I just realised I could well be!) and the request only goes to the one contributor? In that case it is not a bad idea, but I suspect if it was implemented it would end up being like above, with requests being posted publicly and contributors competing. It would be good for the client and agency with only us poor mugs getting the sh*ft so bound to happen.

You're thinking of spec work, but that seems different than what Sepia100 implies. This sounds more like assignment work (one-on-one) where the contributor learns more about the needs of a certain buyer and the buyer can communicate what he's looking for.

I might fill in the survey later today.

Illustration - General / Re: Commercial value?
« on: June 09, 2019, 05:43 »
It's a nice illustration but its concept is a bit unclear to me. Are they folding laundry (then why are they sitting crosslegged), are they unpacking boxes from moving to another place, are they just checking clothes they received from charity...Perhaps that's why it could be used for different things... On the other hand, the combination of things depicted (looking at the people, what they're doing and in what position) is kind of specific, so I wouldn't expect too many downloads.

They HAND-selected my HIGH-QUALITY portfolio. Gosh, I feel all warm and fuzzy inside.

Exclusive program was a scam/red-herring to mask the 10% (20%) commission cut.

Well the major takeaway/headline of the exclusive program was (and is), 'go exclusive and we'll increase your cut to 60%, don't and we'll drop it to 40%'. I mean that was in the main announcement email, as clear as day, so if the intention was to mask what was really going on... then they failed on a momentously miserable scale. Not sure where the scam lies in that?

Not a scam, but it was disguised as being exciting and positive news for the good of the community. At the very least that's sneaky and misleading.

Pond5 / Re: Pond5 video sales since royalty cut
« on: June 03, 2019, 10:18 »
It's been a full month of since the royalties were reduced and I'm curious as to how were your sales including exclusive sales, assuming you opted to create a new account and make some of your content exclusive.

For me it was one of my worst months at P5 for over a year and a half, very disappointing.

How have your sales been?

Normal.

It's too soon to say whether this new exclusivity program affects our sales, we need at least 6-12 months of sales data to say anything meaningful about it.

Shutterstock.com / Re: 3D animation rejected for audio
« on: June 03, 2019, 07:43 »
I just uploaded my first video file to ss. It is a 3D animation that contains some sound effects and it got rejected for the following reason: "Audio: Clip contains unnecessary audio or audio that is potentially copyrighted." I don't know which of the two possible issues is the actual reason for rejection.

Do they reject every 3D animation that has audio or should I just try to prove that the audio file I used was created by me?

Audio is often only accepted if it's integral to the footage/animation, but even then it really has to add something special to the clip. Otherwise it will be rejected. Probably because of copyright reasons, but also because most editors will likely add their own soundtrack, voice-over or sound effects anyway.

The question is: is the audio absolutely necessary for your clip, of just added for the sake of it? If it's the latter, just remove it and reupload.

668
I have the same problem lately, the update window reappears continuously, even though there are 0 differences. Waiting for the fix!

669
I think its the content which is most important, not whether it is exclusive or not.
I'm sure if a client sees an exclusive clip of frog spawn, for instance, they aren't going to be thinking I'm so pleased this clip is exclusive.

Exactly, exclusivity doesn't mean anything to a buyer. It has no advantage to contributors either. It only means something for the agency itself, who is happy to see new content not going to their competitors. Which theoretically would result in more sales, more market share and more marketing possibilities.

670
You do realise you're on a forum for those who sell their work and you're asking them how you can get their work for free? How about you create the work yourself so you can see for yourself how much time it takes and at what cost.

Knock off the attitude. He's just asking for refund policy information, which is a perfectly acceptable question. You're treating him as a thief who's looking for freebies, directing your general anger about refunds on a potential customer who didn't do anything wrong.
Besides, getting a refund on purchased credit packs or subscriptions without downloading anything is completely different than refunds on purchased images.
It's not even asking to get 'our work for free', because even if you refund an image, you -officially- lose the license to use an image, making you prone to lawsuits.

671
I uploaded a vector for the first time they made the change and it's a disappointment.

I can adapt to the new size. No problem. What's disappointing is that they take the size of the artwork instead of the artboard size. This cause a lot problems.

I leave some padding on my artwork since most of them DON'T have backgrounds. I want them to be centered and surrounded by white space. When Shutterstock render the JPG from my EPS file, the rendered JPG has no padding. It looks like a mistake and when people search for my work, it goes from edge to edge and it really messes up my presentation.

I don't know what they're thinking. The tech is clearly not ready for prime-time. They need to change it so that it renders a JPG from the size of the Artboard instead of the size of the artwork.

According to their new uploading article, you now have to check the Use Artboards box when saving your EPS. Then it takes your artboard into account when it renders the preview. I haven't tried it, I refuse to upload until this is resolved.

« on: May 27, 2019, 08:57 »
Sustainable, ha. If they had to subsidize low-priced sales, then maybe there's something wrong with their business model. They shouldn't sell it through partner sites like Getty, let alone stimulate an increase in partner sales.

Glad I don't contribute to EyeEm.

The hackers also obtained passwords in their encrypted form (for technical people - all passwords were salted and hashed with bcrypt). This means that our user passwords remain unreadable by external parties.

Well, that's reassuring at some level.

But why Canva of all places?
