Hey hospitalera, good idea with the freeImage site.
I will put your link to left hand at Microstock news.
And as long as I will not have a buyers guide on my website, I will post your link on my site too Perush. If I at one point have my own "Where to buy good and cheap image section" I will probably remove it. It would be nice if you backlink me, however, I will do it anyway, because I do not have that information you give on my website. And I guess I am the competition regarding referring photographers :)

Perrush,

maybe lots of us are in vacations who would reply to your post, I am sorry I did not replied earlier, I wanted to reply.
So here I do it:

I think you have some good thoughts.
I build my self a website, but for photographers. I did this, because I am myself a photographer and can give others tips where to sell.
I just felt more confortable then doing a website where people can get information where to sell images, because I like selling images and have more or less success with it. So writing about it was more fun, then I think writing about buying images.
But yes I agree you are totally right, making a website to tell people where they have the best opportunity to buy photos is probably more clever. I will start a section soon, where people get information where they can buy. And another thing regarding the referral earnings. Referred photographers very often do not have good enough images to pass the application process. Buyers on the other hand do not need to apply they start buying from the beginning :)

New Sites - General / Re: Zoonar.de
« on: August 08, 2007, 11:49 »
The reason we are so suspicious is, that a few agencies tried to get photographers by pretending what people here accuse you to do. I have no clue why this siteowners do this, since it is really bad publicity. gustyx, the way you started this thread is exactly the pattern how those site owners tried to get photographers. I am sorry if we are wrong, but we replied in this way because of our experiences we had in the past. The way you speak about Zoonar is  suspicious. Zoonar does not seem like being the best site. Maybe you honestly think that, but maybe a lot of us could not see the reason why you praised Zoonar so high. Also the sales on this site does not reflect that. If you say you need 70 sales from other sites to equal 1 sale on Zoonar this is only partly true. You can also sell your image for a euro at Zoonar. So even if we see this topsellers having 2 Downloads we do not know if it was just a euro sell. And it is not unlikely for a photographer to have 70 Downloads on Microstock in a day or two. But I guess it is unlikely to have a download in a day or two for even for the best photographers over at Zoonar. (Microstock= low price=lots of downloads). So you cannot really compare that. And looking at the pictures at Zoonar I do not think the quality is so much better, some of those images most likely would not get accepted at the Big 5. Maybe the search engine is better, but I do not know about that.
So I hope you understand our suspicion. No offense.

Check out this thread. http://www.microstockgroup.com/index.php?topic=1435.0 Pixart uploaded the model release she uses and it seems to work fine for all the big agencies. Thanx Pixart, I used yours too and it worked for me!

Wellcome gustyx, are your by accident working for zoonar? Well maybe you have seen and served a lot of microstocksites and it is your honest opinion that zoonar is the best, but I browsed through some of Zoonar's images and have not seen any downloads for them, but maybe I was just looking at the wrong pics. If it is otherwise as I have seen please clarify, we are happy to contribute to agencies where you can sell lots of images.

I see you shoot with Oly 8080... be careful with noize, especially in the blue sky, that camera is known to be a noizy beast. And do not submit too many of similar theme shots for your test. 10 "travel" photos will raise their flag even if they are good. Try to show variety

Variety is good.  :)   I use a tripod and keep my ISO limbo low to avoid noise.  I love taking nightshots and love this camera for it too.  That reminds me, can you get away with post processing?  I have a noise reduction plugin in Photoshop that I use sometimes, but not often.

Yes you can get away with postprocessing, if you do not overuse noisereduction. Shutterstock is quite picky with noise. Do not be discouraged, when they reject you the first time. I just want to warn you, it allmost seems like policy of them to reject your first and sometimes second application. But if your are it I think the requirement are not so high as in the application.

BTW, forgive me since I'm a moron, but what does IPTC stand for?  I assume there's software I can use so I can easily add the respective keywords into them?

If you have windows, I can recommend this: http://www.microsoft.com/windowsxp/using/digitalphotography/prophoto/photoinfo.mspx it is the tool as well as an explanation what IPTC is.

Lincoln, if you want to see fast success, try to get into shutterstock. They are pretty hard to get into, but as soon as you are in, your images start to sell 12 hours after they got accepted. Istock is strict yes, but it is not a good site to upload plenty of images in a short time period. They only allow you to upload I think 25 or 20 images per week in the beginning.Istock has the worst upload process from all of them.
Yes it is true, you will get probably the most earnings /image on Istock, but if you have thousands of images, you need years to get them online, so SS is definately much better the effort in my opinion. If Shutterstock is too hard, try out Fotolia. Pretty easy to get in and they accept a lot. But sales are not so fast.
Oh and you can write keywords and title and description in the IPTC info of your images. The Big 5 will read those, so you do not have to keyword again and again for each agency.

Yingyang, how are you doing at Istock as Exclusive? I am just curious.

Off Topic / Re: Shares in Getty?
« on: August 06, 2007, 03:57 »
Just a short update, Getty's stock plummeted 20% over the past week. It does not look like as if buying shares of Getty would be a good idea at the moment and in my opinion also in the future. Getty = macrostock mainly --> decline

LuckyOliver.com / Re: Civilized LO Discussion
« on: August 06, 2007, 03:51 »
Good thoughts! Lucky Oliver is a unique agency in almost every way. I do like their approach. The longer I am with them, the more I like them. They try to be honest in every way, as far as I see it, which is refreshing. And it seems for me, they reveal more than other agencies. And I think transparancy is good, at least in the way LO does it. In the other forum Bryan said something from 27 payouts in the last month or so. A few photographers mocked about that, but I personally think, its a good sign. This number will increase the next month no doubt. LO is still young, but finally I am seeing more and more downloads with a portfolio of only about 220 images. I do think LO will have a future in microstock. I believe in their success more than in the success of any other of the up and coming agencies. (Aside from snapvillage) Lately I have seen job offers at LO. No one is offering jobs, if there are no finances and if the future looks bad.

Hey Lincoln,

wellcome here! Some of us photographers do have websites which lots of information about the stock agencies. I for example :)  Click here
You are allowed to use the same images at the different stock agencies, as long as you do not go exclusive with one of them. If you want to go exclusive, Istockphoto would be the only one where it can make sense, however a lot of us earn more if we do not go exclusive.
Yes, you can still do with your images what ever you want, putting them on your blog or using Flickr. You still can give them away for free unless you go exclusive with istock.

Feel free to use referral links from other photographers or me, thats another way to make money on microstock.

All the best on microstock. 5000-10000 images is a lot, only very few of us have that much images.

I did not post to embarrass you, sorry, that could have  happend to anyone...

I think you misunderstood hospitalera, we need your featurepics referral link not the 123 rf referral link ;)

iStockPhoto.com / Re: Fantastic Review
« on: August 02, 2007, 07:08 »
Yes I can agree with mauger, you are allmost tempted to upload crappy images just to get this wonderful and encouraging rejections ;). But lately I have got none for quite a while, maybe you should get stricter with the reviews at LO so you guys at LO can bless us more with your  rejections ;D

Oh and I do have to add, there seems to be light at the horizon for LO. I had a couple of sales in July.  So I hope for the best for LO, since I do think their approach to microstock is unique and refreshing.

Seems like he can do this..:

Print Usage (P-EL):
Physical Items for Resale: includes the right to use the photos for t-shirts, postcards, greeting cards, mugs, mousepads, posters, calendars, framed artwork that is to be sold to other customers for a maximum amount of 10,000 copies (applies as a total of each type of usage). If this amount is exceeded you need to acquire this license once again. The new license will provide you with the standard amount of copies.
This is an additional license to the rights included within the regular Royalty-Free license. Note that the other restrictions still apply.

Maybe we should try that ourself, sell posters on ebay..

« on: August 01, 2007, 05:12 »
Nice chart Sharply! My guess is with your productivity you will earn more in August. However for my portfolio I probably will see a decline in earnings in August.
This month was exceptional. Last month was BME, this month again BME with an increase of 40% of total earnings from last month. How could that happen? I do not know, just being lucky with a lot of Els at SS and being featured at DT I guess.

For the first time I am close to 1000$/ month.
What holds the future? We will see, I just uploaded my first people images. Lets see how they sell.

As I remember 10 images

700
Here it is: http://www.crestock.com/todays-best-image.aspx?id=405
That image is impressive..

While checking out that image I checked also Yuris most downloaded image at Crestockphoto.  Just 14 dls... That is really dissapointing...
With all my images it would take for ever to get a payout on Crestockphoto I suppose..
Good to know I do not miss anything out by staying away from Crestockphoto.
But I like the Judge Ross thing :) Good idea!
