Photo Critique / Re: Can someone look my portfolio?
« on: October 22, 2007, 15:29 »
Very nice portfolio.  Very nice.  Well done.

But too many keywords.  Of course at Fotolia only the first seven words count anyway, so having so many is a waste of energy.

Other agencies will be less tolerant so you should be more selective.

I don't see spamming, just umm.... keyword enthusiasm.

The Fuji cameras are a problem at iStock.

This is in the iStock section.  Are you talking about submission of the cleaned images to iStock or StockXpert?

I agree that the results should be weighted.  The key component is MONEY.  An agency might have the best web site and customer service in the world, but if they cannot sell one's pictures all of that is pointless.

On the other hand if an agency is very successful in selling and generates a very good economic return on one's images, then complex uploading procedures and/or high quality requirements are worth the effort.

StockXpert.com / Re: Subscription sales?
« on: October 21, 2007, 05:10 »
Oh dear Araminta.  I share your concern.  Steve has assured us that StockXpert sees subscription customers as a different category completely and will enhance sales and earnings overall.  Let's not panic - StockXpert and Steve have always responded well, and I'm sure they have the long term profitability and success of their business and contributors in mind.

Nonetheless, seeing an XXL go for 30c is very disheartening, whatever the circumstances.

Modellocate, with FT you have to make sure that your most important or relevant keywords are in the first seven.  There is a facility to reorder your words at the upload and confirmation stage.

Any words outside of the top seven will NOT be used for searches.  You have to get it right at FT otherwise you will be disappointed.

Cameras / Lenses / Re: tip: cheap method to clean DSLR sensor
« on: October 20, 2007, 13:26 »
I read about these cleaning methods all the time,  I tried the copper hill thing unsuccessfully.

Now I take my camera to my local Nikon service centre - they clean it and it comes back a day later like brand new.  Okay it costs a few $$ but then my camera is an important money earning tool and it deserves the very best treatment.

Yes, columns rather than rows would make sense.

I like 123RF, but agree that navigating the balance sheet to get detail on any individual image is a nightmare.

Amazing.  Sounds just like Errol Flynn.....

Yes, I've seen it and thought the same thing - I couldn't check which of my images had actually been downloaded the day before.  Shame - I like to be able to see the underlying detail.

No doubt they will fix it in due course.

Madelaide, words like Porsche are trademarked and cannot be used for commercial purposes, and that also means using them as keywords to try to sell images.

iStock recently deactivated all images that contain pictures and keywords 'Motorola', so we can expect the world to tighten up on these things.

The only time a word like that can be used is if it becomes 'part of standard language'.  This is something Google is trying to avoid at the moment - if it becomes standard to refer to 'googling' rather than 'searching', Google loses all rights to protect its name.

Quite right cameraB.  By my estimation we have four more years of 'good times' and the microstock market will continue to grow in that period.

Although I expect bad times between those years 2012 to 2018, the 'drop' in activity for microstock might indeed be from much higher levels than we presently enjoy.

Cameras / Lenses / Re: Sigma 70-300mm f4-5.6 DG MACRO?
« on: October 18, 2007, 18:51 »
I've just received a Nikon 80-200mm F2.8 AF IF ED I found on eBay.  I paid AUD $800 which is about USD $775.  New in the shops here in Australia this lens retails for anywhere between AUD $1300 and $1600.

I buy my camera bodies new, but my lenses I try to find on eBay.

The gentleman who sold me this lens assured me it was hardly used - true to his word it appears completely unmarked and in brand new condition, and he even sent me the matching hard case which people try to sell separately for $150.

This year I've bought a 35mm F2, 20mm F2.8 and now this new beast.  My only problem with this new lens is its sheer size and weight.

There are bargains to be found on ebay so long as one is prepared to spend time and be patient, and of course be very very careful.

Quite right sharpshot - it's just my view.

Of course anything can and will happen.

Inflation is coming.  It is already bubbling away under the surface.  Prices of hard and soft commodities are rising at a rapid rate.  In the early stages of inflation, manufacturers try to contain price rises to remain competitive.  But eventually they have to give way.  Wheat is up 50% in the last year.  All base and precious metals prices are being driven upwards.  Inflation is coming.

It will appear 'all of a sudden' and interest rates will rise rapidly to try to solve to inflationary problem.

But the instability of the financial system as shown by the 'sudden appearance' of the sub-prime problems a couple of months ago will still be there.  The combination of inflation and high interest rates, coupled with too much debt (and sub-prime debt in particular) will result in a period of hardship.

The impact will be felt globally because of the global nature of money and risk diversification.

Bad times are coming.  They will start in March or July 2012 and last six years.

No problem.  Hope my comments help.

There won't be a recession until the year 2012.  Between 2012 and 2018 there will be a very deep recession, nearing depression levels.  Interest rates will go up to much higher levels than at present.  Property values will fall 50%, and indeed property values have peaked almost everywhere except Asia.

Stock photography is part of media, marketing and advertising.  These areas are a 'leading indicator' and will start to slow down well in advance of the problems to be experienced in 2012 and beyond.  Expenditure on marketing should start to slow modestly from 2010.

I expect demand for stock photographs to fall by up to 50% during the period 2012 to 2018 after which sales should return to peak levels.

Yes, the inexpensive prices of microstock will help protect sales during the problem period, but they will not be immune - if you like, the problem period will be akin to a summer slowdown except it will last for six years.

Sorry, but that's the way it is.

Well I'm afraid I don't have particularly high hopes for SV; it's too amateurish to offer much potential at this stage.

Their keyword and category choices give me the impression they have employed people who have no experience of the stock industry at all - some of my images are left alone, others have most of the keywords removed; their choice of words bears no relation to the subject matter, and they choose categories that would be my last choice.

My recent submission of my 'businessman slipping on a banana' resulted in them stripping out all references to business and businessman, even though the images are clearly of a businessman in a suit and city shoes.  They keywords left in were: banana, slip, slippery.

Doh!
