Shutterstock.com / New Feature - Suggested Keywords?
« on: November 28, 2012, 21:09 »
Just uploaded some new files, and found that on the Submit Images page each image now has a box underneath it for Suggested Keywords and a little button to copy them into your file.

New feature? Although the box didn't have a single keyword in it for any of my 40 images, so perhaps it's still in testing?

I guess it could be a good feature, although it would be useful to know how they are getting the suggested keywords.

Pond5 / Bugs at Pond5
« on: November 26, 2012, 20:43 »
Anyone else noticing bugs at Pond5?

At the moment, I can't get 95% of images to show up. Some have thumbs, but most do not.

Also, I just got two sitemails from them approving my images, and the formatting of them scrolled way off the screen.

Plus, my portfolio count has been off by a couple of hundred for weeks now. Seems like it hasn't been updated with new approvals in a month or so.

Should I even mention that sales seem to have stopped? Last month was great and showed huge promise. This month, nothing... (EDIT: Few hours after typing this, a full-size sale came in. Strange how that often happens!)

Cameras / Lenses / Re: Anyone using Nikon D800?
« on: November 25, 2012, 21:43 »
wow, how the comments changed from the start!

Ok so perhaps the D800 isn't the medium format killing DSLR that was hyped, but it still sounds like an excellent camera. Plus, I'm not really interested in Canon comparisons as I am not about to make the switch.

So thanks for all the feedback. Seems like I will need to consider lenses, as well as storage and computer gear as possible extra expenses, which I was likely to have to upgrade in the next 12 months anyway. Lets hope stock income over the next 12 months makes that worthwhile!

Thanks again everyone

Excellent, thanks guys, really appreciate your responses. They've been really helpful.

You mention spare batteries - how much do you get from the included battery? Is it video that kills it mostly? I'm thinking two batteries like my current setup with my D2X will be sufficient for me.

Also, looks like the 12-24 and the 24-70 gets a great review from you all, along with the 70-200. I'm thinking the 24-70 might be the go. Might be a few months down the track though...

Was just looking at prices for CF cards too (I've got a bunch, but mostly smaller sizes). Seems about $200AU for a 32GB Sandisk Extreme Pro 90mb/s card. Worth the difference from a 60mb/s Extreme card for 50 bucks less?

Seems like a really exciting camera. Wishing it had of been around when I did a lot of my travel work years ago - so many good shots on slide, and so expensive to get scanned!

Cameras / Lenses / Anyone using Nikon D800?
« on: November 24, 2012, 01:41 »
I'm looking to hear from anyone who has had some actual use of the Nikon D800, as I am considering purchasing one in January.

I know it's certainly good enough for stock etc, but what I would really like to know is how you think my current lenses will cope with the sensors quality. I currently use a Nikon 80-200 f2.8 AFS ED lens (non VR model, prior to that) which is still pin sharp, a Nikon 28-105 AFD Macro (cheapish lens, first one I ever bought and it's still going!), and also a lens I will have to sell - the Nikon 17-55 2.8 AFS ED DX (will have to ditch it as its DX, not full frame)

So with the first two lenses, the 80-200 in particular, anyone using that on a D800 and finding it quality enough? For a $2500 lens I surely hope it is, but still it is a bit old now, so I'm not sure.

Also, with the lens I need to replace, I was considering either the 12-24 or the 24-70 from nikon - any experiences with either? Pro's/Con's? ( I do a bit of travel/hiking so zoom lenses are very useful for me, although I know I will get a lot of comments to get primes only. Just not sure I can justify a prime, other than perhaps a 50mm 1.4 or something - happy to hear suggestions though)

EDIT: As another idea, what about this lens: Nikon AF 20mm f2.8D to replace my current wide zoom? Anyone using this lens (looks like an older one)?

And after a few months of use now, how are people finding the D800 overall?

Thanks so much for all of your feedback to come, much appreciated. :)

Newbie Discussion / Re: Finding the best sites
« on: November 21, 2012, 20:57 »
Both are good suggestions, but I think a little encouragement along the way like CD123 suggested is a good thing. Plus, I have some success with some of the smaller agencies that definitely makes them worthwhile. You just can't expect a reliable income from them each month.

The sites I support are here: http://www.microstockman.com/microstock-photography-sites/ if your interested.

But as Leaf points out, if you really want to earn from microstock you REALLY need to be in with SS and the other big guns.

General Stock Discussion / Re: Exclusive or Not for beginner?
« on: November 21, 2012, 20:54 »
Go indie for sure. If iStock ever gets back to what it was before, then maybe exclusive would be an option. I don't think any of us here expect that to happen though...

Bought this book in a market in India when travelling around there about 7 years ago. Don't know what made me choose this one, as I had never heard of it. But wow, I LOVED this book! Told heaps of my friends and got them into it as well.

I agree movies are (usually) never as good as the book, but I am keen to see this one regardless. Will bring back many great memories!

123RF / Re: New files and sales...
« on: November 21, 2012, 18:45 »
There is no doubt 123's uploading process is the best in the business (although, to be REALLY picky, they could auto-process the FTP results).

Love no categories, no pointless clicks per image. Just upload and go.

And I don't hate the Fave idea. It doesn't take that long. But I do think new files shouldn't sit in the background for a month or two before seeing the light of day.

BTW Anglee if you're still reading this - it's a month and half away from your new commission system. Are we going to have to calculate our own commissions based on your chart, or is there something coming on the website to tell us what level we are on, and how far off the next level we are?

I was unaware of this feature.  Heading to 123 right now.  LOL

Is there a way to "unfav" and image?  If I upload new stock, I may wish to fav a new image in lieu of an older one.

yep, following anglee's steps you can both 'fave' and 'unfave' images as you please. :)

« on: November 20, 2012, 21:38 »
Hi anglee,

Yep, maxed out my faves, and do it every time I upload. Thats not the issue. It just seems new files don't get much priority in the search, in addition to the long delay between approval and the new images showing up in the search.

It's not a huge deal, it just is unusual for new images not to get promoted much, when they start selling at other sites pretty much straight away.

ok so it's not just me then. Does this strike anyone else as being a bit odd, that you wouldn't promote new files much at all?

123RF / New files and sales...
« on: November 20, 2012, 18:43 »
I have noticed that new files I upload on 123rf don't take off. Rather a file needs to be online there for a few weeks at least, maybe a couple of months, before they start to sell. Then some take off.

Is anyone else noticing the same thing? It seems that new images might not feature much in searches. (I'm aware that new files don't show up for a few days usually, so I'm not talking about that.)

Shutterstock.com / Re: Slow November
« on: November 20, 2012, 18:22 »
Slightly lower number of downloads compared to last month (highest ever), but way more per download this month. On track for BME. Heaps of ED's and OD's.

Can't complain, SS is doing well for me. It's DT that has dropped the ball...

same here, 150 images in the ether. I'm guessing just a sync delay or sorts, will give it another day or so before I shoot an email.

Will be interested to see what your response says tho toots.

Top work! Love hearing that those sorts of sales are still around.

Beats my $1 novel use sale the other day... ;)

Dreamstime.com / Re: DT dead since November 12
« on: November 20, 2012, 00:15 »
This is looking to be my worst month at DT in well over a year. despite adding lots of new content.

It's amazing how much they can fluctuate, when pretty much every other agency is fairly predictable for me in terms of sales and income.

Thankfully a couple of other agencies are having particularly good months which will more than cover DT's losses.

718
depends how much cash you have to splash around. Will be pricey making the change, but I agree - the D800 is an incredible looking camera.

I'm hoping to get one early next year myself. :)

Have been a Nikon shooter for all sorts of work for the last 10 years, and no reason to complain. Nothing has broken, nothing has let me down. I think you would be happy with either, it's sort of whatever you're used to really. For me, Canon would be like re-learning how to shoot to begin with.

Duncan told me they were doing some A/B testing type thing for a while now, but looks like they have gone live with it properly now.

Looks a lot better. Just wish they would treat the main page content with the same new looks. It seems only the header and footer have been improved.

« on: November 15, 2012, 01:19 »
So true. However my latest 'gift falling from the sky' from Alamy just came in a few minutes ago...

$1 - novel use.

Ahhhh well, let's just hope it doesn't get refunded! ;)

they actually raised EL prices a while back from what I remember, it was even worse before.

The pricing on both PD and GR need to be rethought. Think they were just trying to gain traction with low prices, but they should really do a site wide audit of current pricing. ThemeForest for instance got price rises across the board a few months ago, some quite significant. Don't think it hurt sales one bit from all the BME talk on the forums there.

I like Envato, and think they have a really unique opportunity with how big their network of marketplaces is. I just really hope they start listening to their contributors a bit more and start implementing all these improvements and dev. projects they have been talking about for AGES.

New Sites - General / Re: Pocketstock
« on: November 14, 2012, 19:22 »
Is this officially the first reported sale at Pocketstock?!

They were swamping us with communication to begin with, highlighting their grand plans and how they were going to change the world of stock. But now that the 28 cent commissions have begun to flow we don't even get an email stating how much we will get paid for subs?

28 cents for a new site - not good.

wow, 2 EL's from PP? Didn't even know the PP gave EL's! Great going jsnover!

It's amazing isn't, we can give them heaps about all their failings, but they still manage to bring in the $$.

iStockPhoto.com / Re: does your Photo+ quota ever increase?
« on: November 13, 2012, 21:05 »
Ahhh 2010 :) That sounds like a utopia jsnover :) What if we start a petition for iStock to use the WayBack Machine to revert to 2010? We'll even pay them a small fee based on each image we have, however what that fee is will depend on a RC system we implement and change at will. As for receiving payment, we can guarantee them that it will be paid immediately (little do they know that our ASA (Agency Supply Agreement) will contain our own definition of immediately, like say, somewhere around 2050, assuming the zoom function is working properly by then).

:)

true. It's kinda mesmerising just watching that place fall apart piece by piece. And yet, my sales keep improving (smallish port thats constantly growing, held up by the tiny upload limits each week). Imagine if it was all working properly...
