my curiosity is getting the better of me.

why on earth do you GREATLY NEED this image?

but hold the tomatoes? :)

it works out quite well really - you put your fruit and kittens on iStock, your vivid/perfect/fake stuff on SS, randoms on the others, and your favourite art on Stocksy. (although i see iS is trying to change a little with their 2013 "local" challenge)

just had all mine go through the process, ouch, worst outcome ever, more rejections than I've ever had. 5/30 got through.

I don't mind, all those "poor lighting" ones now have a new home to go to, where I need to build portfolio :) just trying to see a silver lining. and sure, they weren't top shelf stuff, so I can take the rejection.

but some of them are annoying. when the batches get split (due to spelling "mistakes") to have some rejected and then one - shot under the same lighting conditions etc etc - goes through... well, you have to wonder... this doesn't normally happen at SS.  and it annoys me now to split up a set like that (when I could put it exclusively elsewhere).

I applied at the same time as everyone else, ie, when they first announced it and we all registered interest. I got an email shortly after and I submitted my links to my website, SS and ?maybe? iS. (can't remember as I'd deactivated a few at that stage, I think).

Then I didn't hear anything until 12 April where I got another email inviting me to submit 10 images.

I submitted a mix of things: baby, dog, fashion, food, travel... nothing studio though and more unique pics that seemed to suit the style of what Stocksy is about. Some of those pics I am yet to submit because I'd have to deactivate them from elsewhere, and I've got to decide if I'm willing to do that, or if I shoot bespoke for Stocksy from now.

^ agree. it's too different from her "work"

Hmm I found it on this blog, small but with a message that all the photos belong to the blog owner: http://alicesg.blogspot.ca/2012/01/singapore-botanic-garden-jacob-ballas.html

http://2.bp.blogspot.com/_3H7H9Z_3wLo/SR11oFK2NHI/AAAAAAAAG4Y/FlHRPPF1-7k/S350/photo.jpg

You may want to contact her and see if she took it originally and is willing to license it?

although it would be funny/ironic if that particular one wasn't hers

they changed it all around a few months ago, but you still have to go into the old contributor's area to find stuff. I think they added a click to the whole thing as we no longer land in the contributor's area by default.

General Stock Discussion / Re: SL/EL Sale Ratio
« on: April 18, 2013, 05:39 »
I sell a LOT more on SS, but they are mostly subs. there's a thread just recently dealing with the % of subs, singles and Others.

how many sales before an EL... across all sites? or just  the one?
for me iS would win that "race", even though SS has been a bigger earner overall.

doesn't this also depend on what site? ELs are different everywhere?

@ Gillian:

Maybe you have too much on your mind?  That can do weird things to us.

must've. I had a fashion shoot today with a very full-on stylist, which is both excellent and annoying. to make it worse, really didn't get any time to shoot anything for stock :( hopefully a few will work somewhere.

how weird! i'm sure I had PPs through, but they are gone today.

perhaps I was having a (too early, surely) Seniors Moment?  :-[

well the March PP happened quickly and without much fuss? Is that because there wasn't as much to do?  :'(

hmm, dare we agree? suspect many who would agree that something like this goes on (it's been mentioned a few times, and didn't as ex-mod confirm it?), but those who believe it's true wouldn't agree here or anywhere else.

General Stock Discussion / Re: The Texture Store
« on: April 17, 2013, 05:23 »
Only a small crop of my current portfolio is of textures, but they make up the majority of my income.

And now you're looking for ways to shrink that part by lowering prices... Interesting concept...  :o

No, I'm not. Most textures are sold at lower res at commission at other sites typically range from 0.25 to 1.00. The Texture Store is offering 0.50.

but at full res for 50c?

so far I haven't needed to access files from that drive. or rather, the one time I did (and found it wasn't being recognised, tried it on 3 computers btw) I had the raw files on another back up.

I put all my stock files onto the new drive each year, so I have those files in 3 places now.
I wouldn't delete files if I used online back up, it would just be another safety net. I suppose I should look at buying my drives (indeed, almost anything!) online from the USA, probably much cheaper than here in Australia.

Of course you could also use dropbox as a backup? isn't that an easy solution?

plus the hassle of determining which sites to use, what files to put where, who to trust...

actually in my part of the world, with the mining boom, it also means Fly In Fly Out.

My first stock photo was of a basic white brick wall. That was six years ago and that photo is to this day my best selling one by a factor of ten! Only a small crop of my current portfolio is of textures, but they make up the majority of my income. So I believe there is a basis for a site like The Texture Store.

 :)

so if they sell so well why the need to price them so low? just because they are easy to shoot and edit, doesn't mean they should be cheaper. really, texture or bg shots help offset the time spent on other work.

I agree that $1 is just too low, and you've got package deals there too, making them even cheaper. You could have started at $2 per image with zero difference in buyers' minds.

Stocksy / Re: What sort of RPI are you getting?
« on: April 16, 2013, 04:14 »
I would give them at least a year. I have a hard time to understand what are you fearing to loose the pictures are always yours if it doesn't work out like you had hoped you can delete your port and upload elsewhere, personally I will produce a lot stuff for Stocksy in the ciming weeks.

Yes, to be fair at least a year (or two) is needed to see how growth develops.  What I fear loosing.. simply lost income potential if I had put those images on sites that I know will sell.
ok 1) it's "losing"

2) that is indeed the dilemma

Yesterday I shot some seafood quiche that is "very stocksy". I love the images, but they could sit there and never sell. they could be accepted at SS and then earn me a whole 75c.

RM, exclusive, auctions?

I'm not sure the nitty gritty terms are good, perhaps someone with better legalese can have a look?

Dreamstime.com / Re: Changes to DT's Stock Free Images
« on: April 15, 2013, 19:48 »
that's a weird site though, cos they aren't all free. if you do a search or click "more" you just get directed to DTs site to buy the image (not a bad thing of course).
