General Stock Discussion / Re: Cooking the Books

 Hi louoates,

Thanks for clearing up my mistake. You can see why my wife is the money person in tis business relationship. You do not get penalized if you are close and are short by some they just are watching for big shifts in quarterly taxes but when you file your extension you still have to send the check they believe you owe. The main reason is it gives you more time to get your ducks in a row. I will say the one part I do understand is if you have made a lot of money this year you should make any large purchases you are considering before the end of the year. Unless you are going to make even more next year. As was pointed out there is no way around it. My wife has been audited by the IRS and also the State and passed with flying colors but it was a nightmare of organization you don't want to have to deal with. Sorry for the misinformation.

Jonathan

Yes the market does set the price but if the price is under paying the markets value then the industry are leaving money on the table. When the two small sizes where brought into the stock industry back with Macro RF 11 -12 years ago the amount of internet usage was way down compared to print media so the price was set very low.
Now it is the highest sales point so an adjustment could be made to counteract this drop and raise opportunity for agencies and photographers to increase their revenue. This is in part why unions were formed years ago, so that the individual workers could not be controlled and under paid by the large industries. Unfortunately unions can be as much trouble for other reasons but talking about an adjustment is an important topic that should not be swept under the rug.
If you want the market to establish the worth of our product they could easily run the costs down and there rejections up as they overflow with similars. How will that increase individuals sales and grow the market. Trust me the Micro world will meet maturation.
I hear a lot about BME but that term means nothing until people start talking dollars and cents. If my sales last month were 10 dollars and this month they are 30 dollars well then I did have have a BME but I didn't make much money.
When we used to use terms like RPI's or sell through rate they were always followed with the actual number. Not many people in Micro share numbers they just use terms like BME. I don't believe this is useful information to anyone. Are we just reinforcing sweat shop mentality in ourselves and the agencies as well? Just asking.

 Hi All,

I agree that print sales are way down compared to the web sized sales of images. As this trend continues for smaller image sizes and more photographers become stock shooters what might occur from this situation? Maybe less downloads each at smaller sizes for less sales each. I have always believed that the bottom two sizes are way under priced. If pulled by all the agencies or the bottom sizes prices where increased it could raise everyones revenue, the agencies and the photographers. As technology changes the product price has to adjust to keep up with those changes.

 Hi All,

Good choice on the incorporation Lisa. You should always file an extension as well at the end of the year. Hold onto your money as long as you can and collect the interest, which is also taxable but at least it is more money in your account at the end. What are people using to follow their write offs. if you are unsure a good accountant might actually make you more money after you pay them their fee if you are not clear on all the options. The U.S. has areas that throw up red flags when your return comes through, learn to avoid the red flags and avoid an audit. An accountant is very good at helping in that department trusting you have a good accountant. Audits are not the end of the world but they are a royal pain in the behind, stay very organized.

Hi AP and all,

Definitely a growth of great proportion thus the drop in the other models. Istock sold $865,000 in sales just yesterday. Just one day, that's serious chowder at a few bucks a piece. The RF Macro has dropped significantly and someone said it dropped 70%. %'s don't mean much if you don't mention dollars. RF Macro had the room to drop that far and still make more than Micro clearly for my company because the RPI in Macro RF used to be $3-$4 hundred a year with a $1500 hundred life average, that's per image. Now it dropped 70% so you make $400- $ 450 dollars off your RPI in Macro RF over it's life ( 3-5 years ). I am still making more per image a year on my Macro RF by far and I haven't produced hardly at all for it in 09'. As a matter of fact I have some Macro RF ( 1400 ) images from an old collection I have not added to for 5 years and it still outsells my Micro images that are brand new.
RM is a completely different model from Micro that will have buyers for quite some time  and can actually take advantage of some of the chinks in the Micro armour. I don't consider Alamy as one of the RM players though so that makes a big difference around here. Corbis and Getty RM are still making way more RPI than Micro and motion is huge in RM compared to Micro, for the time being.
Diversification in as many models as you can keeps you safely protected in the long run. It's like Roulette, I have a much better chance of winning betting on red than I do on 27. All models have there place at this time, to early to say that some are dead or dying. Watch and wait to see where you might play your chips and keeps your bets small and across the table till the wheel gets hot.

Cheers,
Jonathan

Hi Ap,

At this time Micro is not even close to out selling standard stock. Maybe down the road but it's a bit of a jog.

As for the post I would like to ask them about the future of their industry and how they plan to sustain growth and profit and at what rate and margin. With some data to support it. Where will all the new buyers come from to sustain growth in this industry at the rate the product is being produced.

 Hi All,

Try working on a photo of an american dollar bill in PS4 and see what happens. I had a shot of a till drawer open showing the money all neatly in it's separate slots and even though they were covered with those metal bars that hold the money in place PS would not open or work on the file due to the fact it was to clear a shot of american currency, it is built into the software to keep counterfeiters from copying the bills.

Hi Vitaly and Maria,

The price point is often based on how many images you bring a retouch company and how often. Te price can be negotiated. I have heard of people paying 5 dollars and I have heard 3 dollars so that gives you an idea at least with off shore re touching.

I also pay 5 dollars per image for personal retouchers here in the U.S. but these are not big service agencies these are independent professionals.

You can send images through FTP that is the easiest but you can also mail dvd's or hard drives as well.

Sometimes if you have an extra big retouching job on an image they will offer you a price for the time spent but for basic retouching this will get you close.

If you want to pay an extra fee you can always get a personal retoucher as well that works on only your images so you can build a relationship and they get to know how you like your images processed and retouched, better results with less redo's.

Hope this helps,
Jonathan

 Hi All,

Thanks to those for answering the questions. Sorry all for taking so long to get back, I have been swamped. Yes it is Jainco Tech not Janco I forgot the i. If any are in doubt they will let you try a test of images first. I know many professionals using this service. I tried them 3-4 years ago and they were not up to speed but they have improved tremendously and if they made a mistake with a photo they will fix the problem they missed. This is not a perfect science and you need to have some patience and communication with them if you want to dial it in to your liking. www.lookstat.com is who I would suggest for key wording and uploading as they are U.S. based and have a much better understanding of the English speaking buyers terms. Jainco for retouching and Lookstat for everything else.

General Stock Discussion / Re: September 2009 earnings breakdown
« on: October 03, 2009, 19:11 »
 Hi All,

There does seem to be a drop in Dreamstime over the past couple of months compared to their competition, I notice a lot of other people posted the same results. I wonder what is going on over there, customer service is a bit different as well. They seem a bit stressed. We'll see what happens this month. All other sites are all going up every month 6th BME at Istock in a row and acceptance rate is going up every upload as well at Istock. Fotolia is strong, SS still sells way more than anyone else for me by a land slide.

General Stock Discussion / Re: Attach a fake Model Release?
« on: September 30, 2009, 10:52 »
 Hi All,

We don't shoot a frame till the model release is signed and a photo of the model holding the release has been taken. This is added to our archives and guarantees we will not be sued down the road. Easy to do and totally covers you. Along with a witness to the signing of the release and your safe as can be.

Software - General / Re: What is the best FTP client these days?
« on: September 25, 2009, 10:43 »
I don't want to hijack this post but can people offer why they like the FTP they use. What makes it easy, has it had any bugs. I can say for Captain FTP before their newest upgrade sometimes it would have trouble throwing files away correctly but they seem to have fixed that bug.

If it's a great shot reshoot the same location and clone the people out from the clean version, combine both images to make one. Just an idea.

Hi Eppic,

Some of the newer raw files have a different extension than the old ones. You might want to try the same extension for your new files that don't open for your software to what your older extensions that work use. Just an idea but it might work.

 Hi All,

If you just want to view them to sort or tag then Photo Mechanic pops them up much faster than Lightroom or Bridge. That is all I use it for because it shows the images so fast they upload in a jiff, then I change to another software once I have edited.

General Stock Discussion / Re: Are your images for sale on eBay?
« on: September 19, 2009, 11:45 »
Theft is worked into the cost of most production of goods by manufacturers and resellers. Our business is really no different. Some people steal. Hard number to get a line on but if you were to guess and say 2% of your images were going to be stolen in their life you can start to add that figure into the cost of your production.

 Hi All,

Photographers make their income by taking photos. If Henry Ford decided to build each car himself he wouldn't have stayed in business. This is not for everyone but if it is slowing your production speed you might consider it. Micro managing ( no pun intended ) can stifle even the best companies.

Hi Stockforfood,

I use retouchers who keyword and upload and track my sales at www.lookstat.com they are here in Seattle, Wa. There is also Janco Tech out of India that does similar work as well. These are the two best that I know of. I hope this helps.

Jonathan
