Newbie Discussion / Re: creating website from symbiostock
« on: February 05, 2014, 00:25 »
No there's no demo I know of. But there's www.symbiostock.info that lists about 170 Symbiostock sites being online so far. Just go and browse. You'll get a pretty good idea what the theme can do for you. Then go to www.symbiostock.org to clarify your questions and to get help. You'll also get a sense of this great community that comes with the theme.

Symbiostock is the best thing since sliced bread, if you ask me...

Leo!  I didn't have the stomach to read much of this thread.  Just remember that for every critic you have 100's of fans.  I'm one of them.  You shouldn't have to defend yourself every time you come to visit.  And you don't have to reply to every post. :-*

Very well said! - This thread is sooooo off-topic.

78
Sure, Leo!

I am glad I just finished a new version of www.imagoborealis.com. I'd love to see a screenshot of it on symbiostock.com.

Symbiostock - General / Re: Symbiostock artists collective
« on: January 21, 2014, 21:54 »
It is definitely worth investigating this idea. I have a hard time as well to imagine it can be feasible at 90% commission. Also, a single site for multiple artists would lose the SEO advantage that the Symbiostock network of multiple sites of single artists provides.

Symbiostock - Technical Support / Re: No download area?
« on: January 18, 2014, 14:27 »
Which PHP and SYS versions are you on? Older SYS versions don't get along with PHP 5.4, which has been switch on by many hosts recently, some without telling.

81
Well, I got the basic Symbiostock theme for free  ::)

Symbiostock - Development Area / Re: SYS 3.0 stable?
« on: January 18, 2014, 00:40 »
There isn't much of a difference between 2.99 and 3.x so far, anyway.

Ajt explains it here http://www.symbiostock.org/community/viewtopic.php?f=21&t=969.

That thread also warns about upgrading if you're NOT on PHP 5.4...

83
Well, I played with it, downloaded the js script put it on my SYS site and added the line of code (modified path, of course) to the header.php. I found there is already a html5.js script included to deal with <IE9 issues. So that looked like the natural place to add this line.

Result: nothing. It didn't change a thing. Well, at least nothing obvious at first glance.  ::)

That's it for me. I wasted an hour or so. If image buyers complain that their IE8 can't handle my site then that's their problem (and they are probably quite used to browsing issues by now, anyway  ;D).

I hope Leo doesn't put too much thought/time into this. There are definitely more urgent issues to solve.  ;)

84
I had a chance to test my Symbiostock site with the IE 8 legacy browser. Interestingly, my old 2.65 site shows much better than my new 2.99 site that I am still working on. So my guess was that IE8 and the bootstrap 3.0 that Leo introduced between to the theme don't get along. A quick google search revealed that this *might* be correct. See here for a solution:

http://www.telegraphicsinc.com/2013/10/using-bootstrap-3-with-internet-explorer-8-ie8/

I haven't tried it myself *yet*. But I sure will as soon as I find some time.

85
Ron, I had a quick look at your site with IE9. I couldn't see any major problem. Definitely no "mess".

Considering that IE is a nightmare for CSS coding your site looks really good!

Newbie Discussion / Re: Fotolia and lesson to be learnt.
« on: December 23, 2013, 16:36 »
Well Fotolia seems to live up to its poor reports.

I thought I would upload a few images to see how they got on with Fotolia as some people on here seem to think they were ok.
Despite all these image already being accepted at numerous other ms sites and stock sites like Alamy they failed them all through totally unfounded and stupid reasons.

So glad I only bothered uploading a few images.

I will now be deleting my account and concentrate on the proper microstock sites where reviewers do know what their doing.

LOL - Which ones are those? I only know micros with reviewers and then some sites without reviewers  ;D

If Bluehost is your hosting company, there is a need to upgrade because as of Dec. 1, they upgraded everyone to php 5.4 and SY 2.6.5 doesnt work on that version of php. Your site looks like it's working, but you can't purchase any images. It's really the only reason I upgraded, because I was happy with 2.6.5 and the Clean Theme.

Valid point. I am on Bluehost and still on PHP 5.2.7, though. Never even got notified. So my Symbio 2.6.5 runs great. Hopefully my new site is up and running by the time they upgrade my forgotten server  ;D.

88
My site is online unchanged (theme 2.6.5) and without any trouble since July. No need to upgrade at all. But the new features and design Leo coded since then are just too nice to pass on. That is the only reason why I am working on that upgrade of my symbiostock site right now. I don't think you can get any website software more stable and consistent than that.  :)

89
great to see I was opted out of this already.. (in my api, it's already set to "opt out" somehow) but I am very glad it was..

I just don't see how anyone would opt in to this..

that's why it was not advertised, and secretly launched until they got caught by microstockgroup detectives..

We need them!

90
Very bad. Glad Yay lets me opt out. Otherwise closing my account would be the only possible answer to this.

91
You can install the WP/SYSY theme tandem under a subdomain. No problem at all. Just follow the instructions you'll find on symbiostorck.org (and elsewhere) and from your host. Once your SYS site is up and running you just include all the links to and from your bog and you're done. This basically means you are running two independent WP sites, your blog and Symbiostock, with two separate WP databases. I am pretty sure that is exactly what Sean has done. Is this what you had in mind?

I doubt that a deeper integration than that is possible (such as two themes on one WP database).

92
I am in the process of upgrading my heavily customized 2.6.5 site to the current theme. Yes, there are some issues, so I am glad that I decided to work it all out on a test site. It's actually going smoother than expected. You'll definitely like the new features! I can only work a couple hours per day on it but I hope I can go live in a few days.

Microstock Services / Re: No more keywording!
« on: December 10, 2013, 21:50 »
Well, is there a good reason why we can't discuss keywording and the pros and cons of a keywording service here openly?

I am definitely one of those who consider keywording (for selling my photos online) a necessary evil. Not just that: it also needs to be done right. That takes some effort and time, which, unfortunately, isn't quality time for me.

Usage of a keywording service so I can focus on making great images sounds like a great idea. But it doesn't work. At lest not for me.

OK. That isn't fully true. I am still happily using Picworkflow to help with the keywording task. It doesn't work in saving me time and effort in the end BUT it does work in providing better results.

In order to keyword the bulk of my photos you need detailed knowledge of location and/or subject. If I provide that upfront as a detailed description I am already half done. If I don't provide that description the outsourced keywording becomes meaningless at best. From my experience there are only about 20% of the images where hiring a keywording service makes sense. With those images I am often surprised by the angle the keyworder has been looking at the image. Sometimes it is just plain wrong but often enough it is very valid and provides keywords that I would have never thought of. That means I am now spending time reviewing the work of the keyworder instead of doing the keywords all by myself. It leads to better quality keywording, which justifies the very reasonable price tag, but it doesn't save me a minute of the much hated keywording task.

I don't think anyone could provide an affordable keywording service that would free me of that task.

Now, back to keywording  :(

I have a simple question for symbiostockers (if I can call you like that): Is it worthed to invest time and money?

So far, no. Have had a site up since april. Dont have over 1000 images up yet tho. Not ready to give up just yet. If i have 1000+ images up, am doing marketing, am selling those same images elsewhere, and still have no sales, i will say no, not worth it.

I'm in the same boat. No sales, but to be fair I have no put in a heck of a lot of time after the initial burst, and most of my stuff is very niche market. That said, I have other reasons to upload and keep my sites live. I've mentioned in another thread somewhere that besides making money, it never hurts to have all your stock photos online somewhere. 1. to ensure you don't lose them through theft, data corruption, etc and 2. so that you will never have to worry about having your work used under the "orphan works" provisions. Those right there make the less than 100 bucks I spent worth it.

Someday I will have had enough of MS agencies, and it'll be good to have my own sites.

I agree 100%. I'd do Symbiostock even if it was just for 1. ans 2. - Now, if sales cover expenses I am happy. Everything beyond that is like winning the lottery without even buying a ticket  :D

95
YES, most definitely.

Self-Hosted has been off the radar because there weren't enough votes to meet the quorum of 50 voters. Then came Symbiostock, which helped to get self-hosted well within radar range. Now self-hosted is a mix of well-established self-hosting veterans, who generate good income from their sites plus a bunch of newcomers to self-hosting (like myself) thanks to Symbiostock. From what I gather from forum threads it is especially vectors that are already selling very good on the new Symbiostock sites. Now mix in a few stock photo sales (like those I got so far), all at good prices and 100% royalty. And there you have it: Bronze Medal for Self-Hosted (if Leaf's Poll Results were an Olympic discipline  ;D)

Computer Hardware / Re: Looking for a new backup system (raid1?)
« on: October 31, 2013, 17:44 »
By all means have a good backup routine, redundant copies and offsite storage.  Why . would anyone need RAID for storing photos?

I use RAID 1 hard drives for storing my images just because it is a good backup routine and redundant copies. Now all I have to worry about is offsite storage. I use my Symbiostock website hosting account for that. So far, it has worked out great: I just survived a hard disk failure a couple weeks ago without any data loss at all. I simply bought a new hard disk, replaced the failed one and within a few hours the RAID had restored itself. IMHO RAID works much better than the best backup routine that I usually forget to follow  ;)

97
I upgraded yesterday.

You have to actually remove version 2.6.5 and then install the latest version, which I believe is 2.9.4.

If the Symbiostock folder is already there then it won't install so you need to either delete that folder or rename it.  I recommend just renaming it in case something really gets screwed up then you can just go back to 2.6.5.

That's good advise to have an easy way to roll back if updating doesn't work as expected or hoped.

If you don't need that option the proper way to upgrade is first deactivating the old SYS theme by activating one of the standard themes, then deleting the old SYS theme and finally installing the new SYS theme (and activating it). If you skip the delete step you get this error you experienced.

People who were forced to have their images on TS, and the independents who have no choice, were unhappy that they didn't have the ability to Opt. out and their images were producing roughly $1.20 less per download.

On the other hand, Exclusives who now have their collections back in the higher paying area are unhappy because they can't make 28 cents a download selling subs. They feel left out of potential income.

The inevitable conclusion is this, no matter what IS does, someone will be unhappy!  :)

I think your conclusion is not valid. IS could shut up a majority of critics by simply making all this opt in/opt out. But they choose not doing it.  >:( >:( >:(

a definite no for the bluehost SEO -- use yoast (free) and leo's symbio sitemap  plugin($15) -- sym sites have had great success in getting images indexed by google - eg, I was getting about 10% thru my smugmug site, but get 70%+ with sym..  sym has been designed with SEO in mind

there are additional threads about SEO & marketing at symbiostock.org

+1 - Spend $15 on the plugin (money well spent) and forget about bluehost SEO. SYS theme + sitemap plugin + Yoast plugin are hard to beat  8)
